1Introduction
TheIPSERIALSERVERprovidesaserial device serverfor WindowshoststocontrolRS232/RS422/RS485devices
locatedvirtuallyanywherethroughaTCP/IPor UDP/IPEthernet connection.TheIPSERIALSERVERhasone
asynchronousserial portconnectionononeside,anda10/100 MbpsEthernet connectionontheotherside.Itconnects
devices,suchasCNC,weightscales,andscanners.Applicationsincludeindustrial/factoryautomation,automatic
warehousecontrol, andhospital/laboratoryautomation.
TheIPSERIALSERVERWindowsdriverisdesignedtocontroltheIPSERIALSERVEREthernetdevices.Thedriver
installsavirtual COMonwindowswhichmapsthevirtual COMporttotheIPaddress oftheIPSERIALSERVERdevice
across thenetwork, enabling theWindowsapplicationstoaccess remote serial devicesover Ethernet.
IPSERIALSERVERcanfunctionasaserveror clientfor bothTCPandUDP connection.Theapplicationscenariosare
direct IPmode,virtual COMmode,andpairedmode.Indirect IPandvirtual COMmodes,IPSERIALSERVERshould
onlyworkasaserver. WheninthepairedmodeoneIPSERIALSERVERmustset asaclientandtheothermustset asa
serverinbothTCPandUDPconnection.IPSERIALSERVERalsoprovidesaheartbeat connectionfor applicationor
virtual COM todetect whether IPSERIALSERVERisstill online.
1.1 Direct IPmode
Indirect IPconnection, applicationscancommunicate withIPSERIALSERVERusing TCP/IPor UDP/IPsocket
connection. Therawdata intheIPpacket will betransferredfromandtoIPSERIALSERVER’serial port.
1.2 VirtualCOMmode
InthevirtualCOMmode,thehostconnectstoIPSERIALSERVERthrough 10/100 Ethernet.Theserial device isthen
connectedtoIPSERIALSERVER.

convertapplication’sdata intoIPpacket.IPSERIALSERVERthenconvertstheIPpacket backtoserial data.Inthismode,
IPSERIALSERVERmustset toeitherTCP/serveror UDP/server. ThevirtualCOMdriverisaTCPor UDPclient.A
securityfeatureisbuilt inIPSERIALSERVER.WhenIPSERIALSERVERworksasaserverit will allowincoming
connectiononlywhenremoteIPaddress passesitsIPaddress filtering.For moredetail,pleaselookat thesection,

1.3 Pairedmode
Pairedmodeisalsocalledserial tunneling.TwoIPSERIALSERVERareinvolvedand theymustbeset toaclientand
serverpair. Theremote IPaddress oftheclientsite mustbethesameasserver’sIPaddress andIPaddress oftheclientsite
mustpass server’saddress filtering.Applicationsdo notactuallyusevirtualCOMport. TheyusetheregularCOMportand
hostconnectstoIPSERIALSERVERthrough anull modemcable asshownbelow.

Thepairedmodeisaquickmethod toconvertaserialconnectionintoanInternet connectionwithoutinstallinganyother
softwareonthehost.
1.4 Heart beat
IPSERIALSERVERprovidesaconvenientwaytoreconnect TCPdata connection,incaseofpowerfailureoneither
clientor serversite.TCPport,5300,isreservedfor theheartbeat connection.Afteraclient,eithervirtual COMor IP
SERIALSERVER,establishesadata connectiontoanIPSERIALSERVERserver, it will starttheheartbeat connection.
Whentheheartbeat connectionisestablished.Theserverwill sendasignal totheclientevery5second.Theclientwould
timeoutafter5secondifit didnotreceivethesignal anditwill trytoreconnect theTCPdata connectionevery5seconds
until theserver isbackonline.Heartbeat onlyworksfor theTCPconnection,notfor UDPconnection. Whenanapplication
worksondirect IPconnectionmode. Itcanchoosetoworkeither withor withoutheartbeat connection.

2Driver installationand Configuration
Thischapterwill explainhowtoinstallandconfigurevirtual serial COMdriversonWindows98/ME/NT/2000/XP.With
thevirtual serial COMports,youcancontroltheserial devicesconnectingtotheIPSERIALSERVERasit isconnecting
toyour PC’sCOM ports.
2.1 Windows 2000/XP
TheWindows2000 driver andmanagementsoftwarealsoworkwithWindowsXP.
2.1.1 Installing Driver and Software
1.PuttheinstallationCDintoyour PC, gotoWindows2000 directoryandrun setup.exe.
2.Ifyouarefirsttimetodo theinstallation, theInstallShieldwill bring upthe Welcometothe InstallShield
Wizard forIP SERIALDEVICE window, click Next tocontinue.
3.TheInstallShieldwill copyfilestoappropriate folder andall other work, andfinishthat by InstallShield Wizard
Complete window.
4.Click Finish tocomplete theinstallation.
5.Ifyoualreadyrantheinstallationbefore, theInstallShieldwill bring upthe WelcomeModify, repair, orremove
the program window.
6.Chooesanoptiontomodify, repair or removeinstalledcomponents, thenclick Next tocontinue.
7.Whenthe Maintenance Complete windowcomesup, click Finish tocomplete themaintenance.
2.1.2 Installing VirtualCOM
1. Clickon Start ->Programs->COMPANY NAME->IP SERVERDEVICE->Install VirtualCOM.
2.ThefirstwindowindicatesinstallationprogramsearchIPSERIALSERVERserversconnectedtothenetwork.
3.Thenextwindowlistsall serversconnectedtothenetwork,aswell astheirservername,IPaddress,TCPport,
flowcontrolmodeandiftheyaremappedtoanyvirtual COM.
4.Select aserver, thenclick OK.
5.Iftheserverisalreadymappedtoavirtual COM, amessage The server isalreadymapped! popsup,click OK
gotostep3.
6.Ifyoudon’tselect anyserver, thenclick OK, thedefault parametersareused.
7.Thenextwindowshowtheserver’sparametersor defaultparameterssuchasIPaddress,TCPportandflow
controlmode.
8.ChooseaCOM portnumber fromthepull downlistandclick OK tocontinue.
9.OnWindowsXP,youmaysee amessagesaying not passed WindowsLogo testing, justignoreit,andclick
Continue Anyway tocontinue.
10.Aprogress windowshowstheinstallation, whenthiswindowdisappears, thevirtual COM isinstalled.
2.1.3 Using IPSERVERDEVICEManager
IPSERIALSERVERManagerincludesthefollowing utilities:FirmwareUpgrade,VirtualCOMConfiguration,Searching
IPSERIALSERVER,andUninstall Virtual COM. TostartIPSERIALSERVERManager,clickon Start->Programs->
COMPANY NAME->IP SERVERDEVICE->IP SERVERDEVICEManager.
SwitchbetweenVirtual COM listandIPSERIALSERVERserver list
Clickthe VirtualCOMConfiguration icon, therightpanellistsall installedvirtual COMportsfromthelastconfiguration.
Clickthe SearchingIPSERIALSERVER icon,therightpanel listsall serversconnectedtothenetworkfromthelast
searching.
2.1.3.1Firmware Upgrade
1.Clickon Firmware Upgrade fromtheIPSERIALSERVERpull downmenuor double clickthe Firmware
Upgrade icon.
2.Inthe Upgrade window,click Browse... tolocate theupgradefile,andchooseaCOMportfrompulldownlist,
thenclick Upgrade.
3.IfyouchooseanIPSERIALSERVER’svirtual COM, aprogress windowshowsuptoindicate theupgrade
progress.
4.IfyouchooseaCOMportotherthanIPSERIALSERVER’svirtualCOM, thenextwindowshowstheport
settings, makesurethesesettingsmatchwithIPSERIALSERVERserver’s, thenclick OK.
5.Whentheprogress windowdisappears, amessage Upgrade finished! popsup, click OK toreturn.

1.Clickon VirtualCOMConfiguration fromtheIPSERIALSERVERpulldownmenu or double clickthe
VirtualCOMConfiguration icon.

controlmodeandstatus.
3.Double clickonanyvirtual COM will bring upitsconfigurationwindow.
4.Makechangeson IPAddress, TCPPort, FlowControl asyouwant,thenclick OK.(Note: thechangetothe
COM namehereisnotvalid. TochangeCOM name, pleasesee thefollowing Configuring VirtualCOM section).
5. Amessage Configurationfinished! popsup, click OK toreturn.
2.1.3.3SearchingIP SERIALSERVER
1.Clickon SearchingIPSERIALSERVER fromtheIPSERIALSERVERpull downmenu or double clickthe
SearchingIP SERIALSERVER icon.
2.Aftersearching,therightpanel listsall serversconnectedtothenetwork,aswell astheirservername,IPaddress,
TCPport, mappedtoanyvirtual COM or not, andstatus.
3.Double clickonanyserver, ifapassword isset for theserver, apassword windowwilldisplayfirsttoaskfor
permission,thenbring upthepropertieswindowwhichdisplaysthemutualpropertiessuchasservername,serial
numberandIPaddress ontheleft,while thepropertiesfor eachportsuchasportnumber,protocolandbaudrate
aredisplayedontheright.
4.Tochangetheserver properties, inputnewvalueineachfield, thenclick Update. Thenewsettingswill takeeffect
afterrestartingthedevice.If theserverhasmorethanoneports,select a differentportfrom Serialport pull down
list, itspropertiesaredisplayedaccordingly.
2.1.3.4Uninstall VirtualCOM
1.Firstselect avirtual COM ontherightpanel whenit displaysinstalledvirtual COM ports.
2.Clickon Uninstall VirtualCOM fromtheIPSERIALSERVERpulldownmenuor double clickthe Uninstall
VirtualCOM icon.
3.Thenextwindowasksyour confirmationtouninstall theCOM, click OK tocontinueuninstalling.
4.Thenextwindowshowsuninstalling progress, whenit disappears, thevirtual COM isuninstalled.
2.1.4 Configuring VirtualCOMusing Device Manager
Therearetwowaystoconfigurevirtual COM. Thefirstmethod isdescribedabovein IPSERVERDEVICEManager.
Thesecondmethod isbyusing Device Manager.
1.Goto ControlPanel, double click System will bring up SystemProperties window.
2.Select Hardware tab, thenclick Device Manager...
3.On Device Manager window, clicktheplussign totheleftof Ports(COM&LPT).
4.Double click VirtualSerialPort (COMx) toopenthePropertieswindow.
5.Click Configuration,itsCOMname,IPaddress,TCPportandflowcontrolmodearedisplayed,youcanmake
changesonthem.
6.Click OK will saveyour changes.
2.1.5 Uninstalling VirtualCOMusing Device Manager
Therearetwowaystouninstall virtual COM. Thefirstmethod isdescribedabovein IPSERIALSERVERManager.The
secondmethod isbyusing Device Manager.
1.Goto ControlPanel, double click System will bring up SystemProperties window.

4.Rightclick VirtualSerialPort (COMx), andclick Uninstall… .

afterrestartingthedevice.If theserverhasmorethanoneports,select a differentportfrom Serialport pull down

2.2.3.4Uninstall VirtualCOM

flowcontrolmodeandiftheyaremappedtoanyvirtual COM.
4.Select aserver, thenclick OK.

2.3.5 Uninstalling VirtualCOMUsing Device Manager
Theinstalledvirtual COM canbeuninstalledbyusing Device Manager.

3.On Device Manager window, clicktheplussign totheleftof Ports(COM&LPT).
4.Rightclick VirtualSerialPort (COMx), andclick Remove.

3IPSERIALSERVERUsage
3.1 OperationMode
Thereare6operationmodesdefinedbythe3switches. Theyaredefinedinthefollowing table.
3.1.1 Console
Theconsole modeisfor user toconfigureIPSERIALSERVER’sparameter through its
serial port. Inconsole mode, theserial portisset toaRS232 interface. Thedefault setting is
baudrate 9600, 8data bits, noparity, and1stop bit. User canuseanull modemcable to
connect ahyperterminal toIPSERIALSERVER’sconfigurationpage. User mustset the
hypertermial toaVT100 emulationmode.
3.1.2 Upgrade
Intheupgrademode, user canupgradefirmwarethroughIPSERIALSERVER’sserialportor throughitsvirtual serialport.
See FirmwareUpgradefor detail.
3.1.3 DefaultSetting
Whentheswitchesareset tothismodeandreset theunit.IPSERIALSERVERwillrun usingthedefaultsetting.The
serial portisset sameasconsole mode.Incaseuserforgetsthesettingofaunit,thisallowsusertochecktheunit’sIP
address oritsbaudrate setting.Usercanalsoretrievethat informationfromIPSERIALSERVERmanagementsoftwarein
Windows.HoweverifthereareafewIPSERIALSERVERonthenetwork,thentheinformation gatheredbysearching IP
SERIALSERVERcannotdistinguishbetweenthem.Ofcourseusercanalwaysunplug aunit fromthenetworkanddo the
searchagaintosee whichoneismissing.
3.1.4 IP-RS232 Bridge
IntheIP-RS232 bridgemode, IPSERIALSERVERactsasaserial device server whichbridgeawindowshosttoaRS232
serial device through anEthernet connection.
3.1.5 IP-RS485 Bridge
FunctionsameasRS232 bridgemode, however theserial interface isRS485 interface.
3.1.6 IP-RS422 Bridge
FunctionsameasRS232 bridgemode, however theserial interface isRS422.
3.2 Configuring IPSERIALSERVER
Therearethree waystoconfigureIPSERIALSERVER,oneasdescribedinthe“SearchIPSERIALSERVER”section.
AfterIPSERIALSERVERmanagerfindtheservers,usercandouble clicksontheserverentry.Using update tochange
serial server’sconfiguration.Theothertwoareusingconsole modeandtelnet.Theconfigurationpage showsupinconsole
modescreenisexactlythesameastheoneshowsupinthe telnet screen.Usingtelnet,it allowsusertoconfiguretheserver
while notintheconsole mode.Telnet isonlyallowedinRS232,RS422,andRS485operationmode.Thereareafewpre-
definedkeysfor console operation.
Spacebar:torefreshtheconfigurationpage.
TAB:tomovethecursor tonextfield.
Backspace:tomovethecursor topreviousfield.
Arrowkeys:tomovecursor aroundtheconfigurationpage.
Enter:toconfirmtheaction, suchassave, default, or reset.
Following aresomeofthevariablesthat user canchange.
Server name:
User cangiveanametotheunit for easyidentification.
Password:
After thepassword isset. User needstotypeinpassword beforeaccessing configurationpage. Default isnopassword.
DHCP:
Whenenabled,IPSERIALSERVERwill sendaDHCPrequesttoDHCPservertoget itsIPaddress,netmask,and
gateway.IfnoDHCPserverisavailable onthenetwork,IPSERIALSERVERwill timeoutafter10 secondsandit
will usethedefault value. Default isdisabled.
IP address:
Thedefault IPaddress is192.168.0.1.
Netmask:
Thedefault maskis255.255.255.0
Gateway:
Thedefault gatewayis192.168.0.254.
RemoteIP address:
The RemoteIPaddress hastwousages. Inclientmode, it definestheIPaddress it will connectto. Intheservermode,
it definestheaddress filtering oftheincoming TCPconnection. Thesimple address filtering is

all possible address that isnotdesired. For theUDPconnection, the RemoteIPaddress doesnotworkasaddress filter.

TCP/UDP port:
Therearetwofieldsinthisline.ThefirstfieldselectsTCPor UDPprotocols.Thesecondfieldchoosestheport
numberoftheconnection.ApredefinedTCPport,5300,isreservedfor theheartbeat.WhenusingUDPprotocol,there
isnoguarantee that theothersideoftheconnectionwill receivedata.For morereliable connection,pleaseuseTCP
connection.
Therearefivebuttons,“Save”,“Default”,“Running”,“Reset”,and“Status”.UsercanuseTAB,Backspace,or arrow
keystomovecursor tothebutton’sposition,thenpressenter. The“Save”action storeconfiguration data toflash.User
mustreset thedevice for thestoredconfigurationdata totakeeffect.The“Default”button restoretheediting configuration
data todefault.The“Running”buttonrestorestheediting configurationdata tothevaluethat storedintheflash.For the
editedvaluetotakeeffect, user needtosavetheconfigurationdata, thenreset thedevice. Enter the“Status”, awindowwill
showup.Itdisplaysnumberofpacket that Ethernet hastransmittedandreceived.Andthenumberofthecharacterthe
serial porthastransmittedandreceived.

Q: WhysometimesHyperterminal losescharactersor displayfunnycharacters?
A:ThishappenswhenyouopenanewHyperterminal connectionandkeepinputting thesamecharacter. Thereasonis
beforeHyperterminal receivingtwodifferentcharactersfromtheotherend,itsstatusis Auto detect,andyourportsettings
haven’tfullytakeeffect,sothetransferreddata isnotpredicable.Tosolvethisproblem,inputtwodifferentcharacters
fromtheotherend,thentheHyperterminal statuswill showyourportsettingssuchas9600 8-N-1,savethisHyperterminal
connection. Nextyouopenyour savedHyperterminal connection, everything will befine.
Q: What shouldI do whenI forget theIPaddress or baudrate setting ofanIPSERIALSERVER?
