Fire Retardant Foams
UndertheCondition of theConsumer
ProtectionAct1987,Autohomeshave a
responsibility toensurethat their product
isas safe as possible. With this in mind all
Autohomesareequipped with
CombustionModifiedHigh Resilient
(C.M.H.R.)foamcushions. These foams
are verymuchsaferfrom a fire point of
viewthanthosepreviouslyused. In
addition all upholstery is made of fire
retardantfabric.

Thepurposeofintroducinga Code of
Conduct forMotorCaravannersistobe
seentobedoingallwecanasan
industry toensurethatmotorcaravansare
looked onsympatheticallyby legislators
and otheropinion formers.
Themainelementsshouldcoversuch
things asresponsible camping, safeand
considerate driving,parking,andother
areaswherea motorcaravannercould
cause abuseornuisanceifheorsheisnot
careful.
Hereisa brief outlineofthemainpoints:
ON SITE
-Keeptoroadways unless otherwise
directed.
-Adheretospeed limits. Notethat
thesearegenerally 1 Omph.
(Remember that the stopping
distance on grass in considerably
greater than on Tarmac.)
- Ensure thatall fresh water
taps/connections areturnedoffafter
use.
-Have care andconsiderationwhen
using allfacilities (toilets and
showers etc.)andleave clean and
tidy.Youngchildrenshouldbe
escorted.
-Ifthevehicleisnotfittedwitha
wastewatertanka suitable
receptacle shouldbeputbelowall
wastewaterpipes.Donotletthese
containersoverflow.
-Disposeofallwastewaterwhere
instructed.
-Emptyeffluentfrom chemical toilets
whereinstructed.
-Putall litter incontainersmarkedfor
thepurpose.
-Donotmakeexcessivenoise.
-Petrolgenerators, unless silenced,
shouldbeusedwithconsideration.
-Alldogsandotherpetsshouldbe
keptundercontrol.
-Adhereandtakenoteofall fire
precautionsnotingthewhereabouts
ofthe fire points.
- Unless permissionhas been granted
barbecues shouldnotbeused.
Whenpermissionhas been given
considerationshouldbegiventothe
annoyance thatcanbecausedto
other users ofthe site. Similarly,
open fires arenotallowed.
-Awningsand tents shouldonlybe
usedwhenpermissionhas been
obtained.
-Leavethepitch clean andtidy.
-Onleaving, check outwiththe

-Campingawayfromlicensed sites,
withoutthelandownersorhis
agentspermission,isnotallowedin

PREPARING FOR THE ROAD
PRE-LOAD CHECKLIST
BEFORE LOADINGCHECK:
-loosearticles are stowedsecurely. Do
notstow tins, bottles or heavy items in
overhead lockers.
- all lockersandcupboarddoors are
closed andsecured.
- all rooflights are closedandsecured.
-maintable is stored inits transit
position.
-fridge is on12V operationanddoor

- all windowsare fully closedand
latched.
Leave all curtainsand blinds open to
aid rear visibility.
- gas cylindersarecorrectlypositioned,
secured andturned off.
-battery is secureandconnecting cable

Somemodels of Autohomesarefitted
with a roof rackandladder as standard.
Care is needed when using this facility.
Autohomesrecommend you exercise
extremecautionwhenloadingand
unloading.

DO NOT EXCEED THE STATED
MAXIMUMLOAD. ITEMS FITTED OTHER

ROOFLOADING
The roof rackand roof area (uptothe
glass reinforcedplasticoverthecab
section) are capable of withstanding an
average person's weight of13 stones
(or 82.5kg).

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES WALK
ON THE OVER CAB SECTION.
N.B. Whenloading the roof rack,make
sure theload is spreadevenly.

3.Usewheelbracetoslackenoffwheel
nuts onthewheeltobe changed.
4. Position scissor jackatthe
appropriatejackingpoint.
5.Jackupthemotorhome until the
wheelforremovalis just offthe
ground.
6.Removethewheel nuts andremove
thewheel.
7.Fitsparewheeland reverse the
above procedure.

that has been removed.

SAFETY &SECURITY

Children
Do notleavechildrenalone in the
motorhome in anyevent,keeppotentially
dangerous items outofreach as athome,
e.g. matches,drugs,etc.
Fire Extinguishers
Itis recommended thata 1 kg(21b)
minimum capacity dry powder fire
extinguisherbecarriedinsideyour
motorhomeatalltimes.(When using a
drypowderextinguisher, itis suggested
thatthemotorhomebe evacuated until
thepowderhassettledtoavoid
inhalation.)
A fanpan fire shouldnothavean
extinguisheraimedat it butbesmothered
with afire blanket.
In case offire
1.Geteveryoneoutofthemotorhome
asquicklyaspossible using whichever
exit is thequickestincludingwindows.
Do notstoptocollectanypersonal
items.
2.Raisethealarm— Call the fire
brigade.
3. Turn offgascontainervalve if safe to
do so.
Ventilation and Condensation
AllAutohomescomplywith British
Standard5601Part 1. Theventilation
pointsonyourmotorhomearefixed
pointsofventilationwhicharestatedby
the British Standards.Underno
circumstances must theseventsbe
blocked or obstructed. Itis advisedthat
fixedventilationpointsare checked and
cleaned (if necessary)on a regularbasis.
SECURITY
Chassis number
Record yourmotorhome chassis number
(whichcanbefoundstampedon a plate
fixed beneath the motorhome door), and
your cab chassis serial no.(whichcanbe
found on a plateunderthebonnet).Make
a noteof this numberinthe space
provided atthe front of this handbook
and makea separatenoteofthenumber
tokeepsafeathome.
Motorhome Theft
Thetheft of a motorhomecan occur inthe
most unlikely circumstances;from a
motorwayservice area, evenfroman
owner'sdriveway.Secureallwindows
and doorswhenyourmotorhome is
unoccupied even if onlyfora short length
oftime.
Additional security
Consider fitting any device whichmight
deter or prevent intrusion bythieves. A
wheel lockpreventsremovalofthe
wheel. Windowetchingofthe chassis
number is a costeffectivedeterrent.
Free crime prevention
Advice aboutsecuringyourmotorhome,
protecting yourvaluables,property
marking,eitherathomeor whilst on site,
can beobtainedfromtheCrime
PreventionOfficerthroughyour local
Police Station.

ARRIVAL AT SITE
CheckSiteRegulations
Selecting a Pitch
Carefully selectwhereyou wish to place
yourmotorhome.The site shouldbe as
level as possible,preferablenotunderor
near trees,welldrainedand away from
possible boggy areas.Considerhowyou
will movethemotorhomewhen itis time
toleavethe site. Onslopingground itis
better topitch facing downhill,especially
duringtherainyseason.
Levelling
Winddowntherearcornersteadies (if
fitted) onto load spreaders(blocks of
wood a minimumof 6 inches (15.25cm)
square)taking care notto lift the
motorhome wheels.
NOTE: CornersteadiesareNOTwheel
jacks.
Itis importantthatthemotorhome is
correctly levelledtoensurethecorrect
workingoftherefrigerator,cookeretc.

must NOTBEswitchedon until water
flows fromthehotwatertapswhich
indicates thewaterheateris full.
TheCascade Water Heater shouldnot
be usedon BATTERY CHARGERONLY
(i.e.withouta 1 2Vbatteryincircuit)as
this maycausetheheatertooperate
incorrectly.
Undernocircumstances connect The
Cascade Water Heater directlytoa
mainswatersupply.
WATER SYSTEM
a) Fresh Water Tank
Fill thetankwith fresh waterfroma known
drinkingwatersupplyusinga hosepipe
which isrecommendedforusewith
drinkingwateralternativelybymeansofa
container, andfunnel;thetankis full when
thewater runs fromtheoverflow pipe.
NOTE: Itisrecommendedthatthe fresh
water tankis sterilised atthebeginningof
each season'susewithoneofthe
proprietaryproductsfollowingthe
instructions given.

b) Waste Tank
Autonomiesarefittedwitha wastewater
tankwhich accepts allwastewaterfrom
the sink, handbasinandshower(where
applicable).
When full thewastewatertankcanbe
emptied using theoutletvalveprovided
underthemotorhome,thepositionof this
valve varies according tothemodel of
motorhome.
Cold Weather Use
You will findthatcertainpipes(waste
water)runoutsideandunderneathyour
Motorhome. In colderweather it maybe
desirabletoinsulatethesepipes. This can
be doneby using foaminsulationtubing
fromyour local DIY store.
GAS SYSTEM
Turn ongasatmaincylinder.
GENERAL INFORMATION
Gas Bottles
Bottled L.P. gas is themostconvenient
portable sourceoffuelforyour
motorhome.
Make sure thatheating,cooking
appliances andgascylindersare
switchedoffbeforeyoumovethe
motorhome.
Regularly check flexiblegashose, joints
and connectionsfortightness. Finally
make sure that each gas appliance is
workingefficientlytothe
recommendations ofthe appliance
manufacturers.
The regulator
Theregulator is a governing device which
adapts thebottle pressure toonethat
suits theequipment in themotorhome.
Thegas system shouldbe checked onan
annual basis.
BUTANE
PROPANE
Note: Regulator valves should always
be in the'OFF' position when the
motorhome is on the move.
WARNING
Some industrial LPGappliancesoperates
at high pressure andrequire a 'high
pressure'regulator. This oftenhasan
adjustinghandleon it. NEVER usesuch a
regulatorona motorhome.
Propane andButanegasregulatorsare
not interchangeable.

Hoses
Hoses should be made from Neoprene,
which is blackand should conform to BS
321 2. Rubber hosing should never be
used. Itis goodpractice to replace hoses
annually,and a jubilee clip isa
worthwhile addition to preventaccidental
removal of thehose.
TYPES OF GAS
Butane
Butane is supplied in the U.K.in Green,
Blue or Aluminium bottles.
All these have a male left handthread
except for CampingGaswhich has a
female right handandCalor, aluminium
and 321b bottles whichhave a special
clip-onconnection.
Continental bottles usually have a male
left handthread similar tobutnot identical
with U.K. Butane.
Butane is suitable foruseat temperatures
down to2°C but willnot work below
that.
Propane
Propane is supplied in Red, or partly red
bottles whichhave a female left hand
threadedconnector.
Scandinavian countries usethe same
connector.
Germany or Austria supply Propane with
a maleconnection.
Propane will work at temperatures as low
as -40°C and is therefore suitable forall
winter caravanning.

GAS SAFETY ADVICE
Facts about LPG
LPG is notpoisonous.
Bi-productsare harmless.
There is danger ifallair andoxygenwere
excluded.
(Ventilationholes must beclearat all
times).
LPGhasbeengiven a smell by the
manufacturers in ordertoidentifyleaks.
Awning Spaces LPG Appliance
Exhaust
There is nodanger of pollution of an
enclosed awningspacefromtheLPG
exhaustfrom a refrigeratorventinginto it.
Space heatersmayproduce sufficient
exhaust to pollutetheawning space, ifit
is totallyenclosed,from a general
comfort, smell andhygienepoint of view.
In theextremecasetherecouldbe a build
up of carbondioxide toa dangerous
level.
Motorhomeownersareadvised to allow
some fresh air circulation in theawning
space whensuchappliancesare inuse.
PRECAUTIONS
a)Neverlook fora leak with a match.
Always usea soap solution orits
equivalentwhentestingconnections.
Donotoperateanyelectrical
apparatus whatsoever,especially light
switches. If theleak is notobvious, the
motorhomeshouldbe evacuated and
qualifiedpersonnelconsulted. The gas
bottleshouldbeturned off.
b)Avoidnaked lights whenconnecting
orchanging a cylinder.
c)Checktheflexiblehosefrequently.
d) The gas is heavierthan air and
therefore sinks to thelowestpoint.
Roof-mounted Flueinstallations
Allflue installations shouldbeinspected
once a yearthroughout their length for
corrosion. Flues shouldbereplaced if any
sign of perforation is found. Ensure that
thereplacement is onanapprovedtype.

On arrival at caravan site
1. Before connecting themotorhome
installationtothemainssupply, check
that
(a)themainssupply is suitable for
yourinstallationand appliances,
i.e. whether itis a.c. or d.c. and
whether itis atthecorrectvoltage
and frequency,and
(b)yourinstallation will beproperly
earthed. Never accept a supply
from a socketoutlet or plughaving
onlytwopins,orfrom a lighting
outlet.
(c)anyresidualcurrent device (earth
leakage circuitbreaker) in the
mainssupplytothemotorhomehas
been tested within the last month.
In case of doubt,consultthe site owner or
his agent.
2. MAKE SURETHAT THE SWITCH AT
THE SITE SUPPLYPOINT IS OFF.
3.Removeany cover fromtheelectricity
inlet providedonthemotorhome,and
insert the connector ofthesupply
flexible cable obtained fromthe site
owner.
4.Removeany cover fromthesocket
outletprovidedatthe site supplypoint,
and connect theplugattheotherend
ofthesupplyflexible cable to this.
Switchonthemainswitchatthe site
supplypoint.
IN CASE OFDIFFICULTY CONSULT
AN APPROVED ELECTRICAL
INSTALLATION CONTRACTOR (WHO
MAY BETHE LOCAL ELECTRICITY
BOARD). ITIS DANGEROUS TO
ATTEMPT MODIFICATIONS AND
ADDITIONS YOURSELF.
LAMPHOLDER-PLUGS (BAYONET-CAP
ADAPTORS) SHOULDNOT IN ANY
CIRCUMSTANCES BE USED.

Note: Connection toa mains voltage
supply OVERSEAS requires particular
attention.
Care must betakenwhenconnecting
supplies abroad sincethe supplies can be
of REVERSE POLARITY.
Thesignificance of REVERSE POLARITY is
thatwhenequipment is switched offit
may notbeelectricallyisolated.
Theonlycertainway of making
equipmentsafe isto unplug it.
Ameans of checkingthepolarity of the
mainssupplywhenoverseas is useful.
There areavailableseveralproprietary
makes of equipmentfor this purpose.
Ifit canbe achieved, itis preferable to
connect live to live,andneutral to neutral
tomaintain full electricalprotection.
•CHECKallmotorhomeequipment is set-
up to accept the site supplybefore
actually switchingon.

unit need to be in the ON position. The
switchesonthe left of the unit areknown
asM.C.B's(miniaturecircuitbreakers).
Intheevent ofa faulttheM.C.B. 'trips'
i.e.automaticallymoves to the OFF
position.
Afterelimination of thefaulttheM.C.B.
can be re-set byswitching to the ON
position,.(Againstthe spring pressure in
an upwardsdirection).
If anearthfaultdevelops ora personwas
totouch a live piece of equipmentthe
leakage of currenttoearthshould
immediatelyoperatetheRCD(residual
currentdevice)and 'trip' themainswitch
totheOFFposition.
This switch is onlyre-settableafter
elimination of thefault.
PeriodicallytheRCDshouldbe checked
by operatingthe test buttonmarked 'T'.
The unit shouldimmediatelyswitch to the
OFFposition. If the unit doesnotswitch
offthen a qualifiedelectricianshouldbe
consulted.
If the unit doesswitchoff,the test is
complete andtheswitchcanbe re-set
restoring thesupply back tonormal.
Note: Having too many appliances
switched onatthe same time willtripthe
RCD. This isa safety measure.

THE12V SYSTEM
The 1 2 Volt Distribution Paneland Battery
controlandmonitorthe 1 2 volt electrical
system, includingthesecondbattery(see
illustration).
Toaccurately test theconditionofyour
second battery, turn the 1 2 volt switchon
and observethecolourofthe light. A
green light indicatesa satisfactorylevelof
charge anda red light indicatesan
unsatisfactorylevelof charge. Thecolour
of this light indicatoris irrelevant whilst
any 1 2 volt appliancesarebeingused.
Thered light mayglow whilst anyofthe
12 volt appliancesareinusebut this is
notindicativeofthebatterychargelevel.
There arewaterlevel monitors forthe
fresh andwastewater tanks whichgive
an indicationoftheavailablecapacities
of each tank.
Whenwaterispresentinthe fresh water
tanktheindicatorneedle will light.
Ared light will glowwhenthewaste
watertankis full.

Fuses
The fuses protectthelighting,cassette
toilet,waterpump,extractorfanandthe
space heater.Inadditiontothese fuses,
thereisa 25amp fuse fittedadjacentto
thesecondarybatterytoprotectagainst
polarity.
WARNING: Inthe event ofa fuse
blowing, checkforthe fault in that circuit
before replacing the fuse. Itis important
to remember that the fuse is fitted forthe
protection ofa circuit andisa safeguard
against fire and injury. Only a suitably
qualified electrician should be allowed
to work onthe electrical system and
appliances in your motorhome.
ZIGX-2 CHARGER
TheZigX-2isa fully automaticbattery
charger connected toa sixcell lead acid
battery with a nominalvoltageof13.8
volts. The unit will chargeandrecharge
thebatteryby raising theterminalvoltage
toequalthatoftheoutputofthebattery
charger. Asthebatteryvoltageincreases,
theinputcurrentfromthebatterycharger
automatically reduces until itceasesto

flow, this provides fast andefficient
batterychargingandeliminatesthe
possibility ofovercharging, unless the
batteryisfaulty.
WARNING: Ifthe battery is
discharged, the load drawn bythe
accessories inuse must not exceed the
rated output ofthe charging system.
The 1 2 voltelectricalsupplyistakenfrom
thesecondarybattery with theexception
oftherefrigeratorwhichistakenfromthe
vehicle battery.Theinternal lights, water
pump, warmairheater,watergauges,
extractorfanand 1 2 voltsocketareona
common circuitprotectedbya 25amp
fuse.Each appliance, with theexception
ofthesocket,hasitsownON/OFF
switch.
Therefrigeratorisona separatecircuit
protected bya 25amp fuse with the
supplycontrolledbytheengineignition
switchviaa relay.Therelayand fuses
can befoundadjacenttothebattery.
Internal Lighting
Lightingisprovidedby transistorised
fluorescent lights. Twotypesarefitted,
one with a single 8 watttubeandthe
other with a 13watttube. Bulbs fittedto
the2.1watt spotlights, attherearofthe
dinette, areoftheconventionalbayonet
fitting anduseapproximately1.75amps.
Water Pump
With theisolatingswitchON,thewater
pump iscontrolledbya built-in pressure
switch.Thepump uses approximately7
ampswhenrunning.

Maximumloadshouldnot exceed 3
amps.
Battery
AllAutohomesarefitted with a battery
box which is vented,heavyduty, 1 2V
batteryshouldbepurchased to provide
power for lights, fridgeandother
electrical appliances. The recommended
size fora battery boxis either a 60or90
amp powerbox ofa proprietarybrand
leisure battery. The battery must also
have a tubeventingcapability.
Warning:Explosivegasesmaybe
presentatthebattery— preventflames
and sparks.
Yourmotorhome has beenfitted with an
in-line fuse between the batteryterminal
and strip connector. Itis recommended
thatthe fuse ratingfitted inthis location
doesnot exceed 25A.
When fitting the battery,ensurethat the
correct polarity is observedandthat
terminals aresecurelyfastened.
Ensure thebattery is secured with the
strap provided.
Undernormalcircumstances it should not
be necessary to removethebatteryother
than for routineinspection of terminals
(possibly once a year).
