Introduction
The CS-AC-4311 Input/Output (I/O) Expansion Board is used to provide 8 additional
programmable inputs and 8 additional programmable outputs to a Controlsoft i-Net
installation. Each output provides voltage free changeover contacts for maximum
flexibility. Three variants of the product is available, CS-AC-4311 (boxed), CS-AC-
4311-PCB (PCB only) and CS-AC-4311-PS (boxed with 2 Amp power supply)

Cable Specifications:
For RS485 connections we recommend using Belden 8723 or equivalent. This consists
of 2 twisted pair cores within the cable. Each pair is screened to reduce interference
and electrical noise, plus an overall screen for additional protection. It is possible
to use screened CAT5 / CAT5e / CAT6 but we recommend using stranded cores as
opposed to solid cores to reduce the risk of cores breaking.
Note: the RS485 ‘+’ and ‘–’ connections must be run on either side of the same
twisted pair (e.g. Green and Green/White), with a separate core used for the
reference.
The total distance of an RS485 network must not exceed 1Km (1000m) from end to
end.
For wiring between the I/O Expansion Board and Locks/Request to Exit (REX) Buttons
we recommend a 22 AWG or thicker gauge alarm cable. We recommend using cables
with spare cores in case a core breaks or is damaged. Do not use CAT5 / CAT5e /
CAT6 cables to connect locks or exit buttons.

Installation Instructions

Step 1: Mount the AC-4311
Boxed version: Use the metal housing as a template and mark the wall. Drill the
wall and plug if necessary, then screw the housing to the wall.
PCB Version: Fit the PCB in a suitable housing using the four self-adhesive feet
supplied.
Step 2: Connect the RS485 Bus
The RS485 bus must be wired with a twisted pair screened cable. Please refer to the
cable specifications on page 1.
The RS485 ‘+’ and ‘–’ must be on the same twisted pair (e.g. Green & Green/White).
A correctly wired RS485 data line is shown in the diagram below.
If the I/O Expansion Board is at the end of the RS485 bus, then Jumper J24 must be
fitted to ensure that the network is correctly terminated.

Step 3: Set the RS485 Address
Each device on the RS485 network must be assigned with an individual address
unique to that network. The RS485 bus supports up to 16 devices, so the I/O
Expansion Board has a DIP switch where the address is set by switches 1 to 4 as
shown in the table below:

Important!
• On an i-Net based system, do not use address 0 for an I/O Expansion Board.
• Always keep a record of the location and address for each device to avoid
duplication and confusion.

Step 4: Connect the Inputs
All 8 inputs on the I/O Expansion Board are fully programmable so any door contact,
alarm signal, REX etc. can be connected to any of the 8 inputs. The function of each
input is programmed via the Controlsoft Lite or Controlsoft Pro software (please refer
to relevant manuals)
Inputs are connected to terminal blocks J10 (inputs 0 to 3) and J12 (inputs 4 to 7).
Each input has an indicator LED just above the input terminal. This LED illuminates
when the input is shorted.
Each group of inputs (0-3 and 4-7) can operate in one of three modes:
• External Mode
• Internal Mode (Common Positive)
• Internal Mode (Common Negative).
External Mode is useful when the trigger device switches a voltage source to the I/O
Expansion Board. To select External Mode, use a single jumper link on J1
(configures inputs 0 to 3) or J2 (configures inputs 4 to 7) across the
centre pins as shown opposite:

Connect the Inputs
Internal Mode (Common Positive) is used when the trigger device has voltage
free contacts and a common positive is required. The trigger device should
be less than 25m from the I/O Expansion Board. To select Internal Positive
Mode, use two jumper links on J1 (configures inputs 0 to 3) or J2
(configures inputs 4 to 7) across the top and centre pins as shown
opposite:
Example: to wire a contact to Input 2 for Internal Mode (Common Positive):
Internal Mode (Common Negative) is used when the trigger device has voltage
free contacts and a common negative is required. The trigger device should
be less than 25m from the I/O Expansion Board. To select Internal Negative
Mode, use two jumper links on J1 (configures inputs 0 to 3) or J2
(configures inputs 4 to 7) across the bottom and centre pins as shown
opposite:

6Connect the Outputs
The most common mode used, and hence the default mode for both groups of inputs,
is Internal Mode (Common Negative). It is recommended that this mode is used
unless another mode is specifically required.
Important!
• Do not use internal mode if input devices are more than 25 metres away from
the I/O controller.
• Input Rating (External Mode): An external power supply must be used to power
the input loops. Each digital input draws a maximum current of 7.3mA at 60Vdc.
• Input Rating (Internal Mode): When the input terminal is connected to the
common terminal via a voltage free contact, the maximum current drawn by the
input loop is 1.5mA.
Step 5: Connect the Outputs
All 8 outputs on the I/O Expansion Board are fully programmable so any magnetic
lock, door strike etc. can be connected to any output. The function of each output
is programmed via the Controlsoft Lite or Controlsoft Pro software (please refer to
relevant manuals)
Each output provides voltage free change-over contacts.
The output connectors are labelled from J20 (output 0) to J13 (output 7) on the
circuit board.
A status LED is provided at each relay to indicate whether the output is activated
(LED ON) or deactivated (LED OFF).
Examples of wiring for outputs are shown below:
Wiring a Magnetic Lock to Output 7:
If the breakglass is pressed, or the relay activated, power is removed from the
MagLock, which releases the door.

If the breakglass is pressed, or the relay activated, power is applied to the Door
Strike, which releases the door.
Important!
• ALWAYS fit a MOV (8 supplied with each I/O Expansion Board) across inductive
loads such as magnetic locks and strike locks to prevent Back EMF from
damaging the PCB.
• Not fitting a MOV voids the warranty of the I/O Expansion Board.

J1: Input Mode for Inputs 0 to 3 (Default = Internal Common Negative)
J2: Input Mode for Inputs 4 to 7 (Default = Internal Common Negative)
J7: Remove link to remove power from the board
J22: RS485 biasing ‘+’ (Default = shorted) Leave this jumper in place unless there
are problems with the RS485 bus, in which case remove jumpers J22 AND J25
J24: RS485 termination (Default = shorted) Leave this link in place if the I/O
Expansion Board is at the end of the RS485 bus. If the I/O Expansion Board is not on
the end of the bus, remove the jumper link.
J25: RS485 biasing ‘-’ (Default = shorted) Leave this jumper in place unless there
are problems with the RS485 bus, in which case remove jumpers J22 AND J25
SW1-1: Sets the RS485 address (Default = OFF)
SW1-2: Sets the RS485 address (Default = OFF)
SW1-3: Sets the RS485 address (Default = OFF)
SW1-4: Sets the RS485 address (Default = OFF)
SW1-5: Reserved (Default = OFF)
SW1-6: Baud Rate (Default = OFF = 9600 baud). Leave this switch OFF for use with
i-Nets, only switch this ON for use with legacy systems.
SW1-7: Reserved (Default = OFF)
SW1-8: Reserved (Default = OFF)

Connect the Power Supply
Step 6: Connect the Power Supply
The I/O Expansion Board required 12v power to operate. The PCB requires
approximately 50mA when no relays are active, plus approximately 33mA per output.
Wire the power supply to terminal block J8 marked ‘12V’ and ‘GND’.
Two terminals are provided for +12V and two for GND for connecting to other
devices.
LEDs:
Power LED: This will light when J7 is fitted and power is supplied. If the Power LED
is off, check the power supply for correct operation, and check that all connections
are correct.
CPU LED: This will flash during normal operation. If the CPU LED is permanently on
or off there may be power problems or damaged circuitry.
HOST LED: This will light when the I/O Expansion Board is successfully
communicating with the Master i-Net via the RS485 bus.
Important!
• The power supply MUST be earthed.
• The power supply must be able to deliver power for all devices connected to
the I/O Expansion Board. Although the current required by the I/O Expansion
Board is low, this will increase as different load devices are activated. The power
supply must be capable to delivering worst case power requirements. Always
allow some contingency when calculating the size of power supply required.
• After changing any DIP switch settings or jumper positions, the controller must
be switched off and then on again. This is easily achieved by removing jumper
J7, count to 10 then replace it.
