MICROWAVE
OVEN
YOU CAN RELY ON DEFY

Page 2
Introduction
You are now the owner of one of the finest and most modern microwave ovens that to-
day’s technology can produce. You are going to make a great team together, but first you
must familiarise yourself with the product. Please take some time and read through this
manual carefully. It will tell you all you need to know about your new microwave oven,
what it will do and how to do it. We wish you many happy years of cooking.
Microwaves and how they work
Microwaves are high-frequency electromagnetic waves closely resembling ordinary day-
light or radio waves. But whereas radio waves vary in length from 1 metre to many kilo-
metres, microwaves are only about 12.5 cm long.
A magnetron, converts electrical energy into microwaves. The microwaves are not hot, so
there is no heat in the microwave oven. The microwaves penetrate the food and provide
energy which vibrates the water molecules present in the food. This incredibly rapid vi-
bration produces extreme heat which cooks the food. This explains the mystery of how
hot food can emerge from a cold oven.
Microwaves are not retained in the air or in the food after the door is opened. Micro-
waves can not penetrate metals, so the oven cavity is lined with metal. The oven door
window is transparent and is lined with a fine metal mesh which prevents the waves from
passing through. The door mechanism is designed in such a manner that the oven will not
operate if the door is open. During manufacture, the microwave ovens are subjected to
stringent processes and testing to ensure that microwave leakage does not occur.
Precautions
1. Do not attempt to operate the oven if the door is bent, the hinges are loose or broken
or if the door no longer closes properly. Report any damage to your dealer or nearest
Defy Service Centre. They will be able to take the necessary corrective action.
2. Do not tamper with or attempt to bypass the door safety interlocks.
3. Do not place or trap any object between the front edge of the oven and the door.
4. Clean up any residue which may accumulate on the door’s inner sealing surface.
5. Liquids or foods should not be heated in sealed containers as they might explode.
6. Do not allow children to use the oven without adult supervision.
7. Any adjustment or repairs should only be undertaken by a qualified service techni-
cian.
Electrical installation
Microwave ovens operate off a 15A earthed electrical socket and do not require special-
ised electrical installation. However improper earthing could result in electrical shocks.
If the supply cord is damaged it must be replaced by a qualified service technician.
The use of an extension cord is not recommended but if one must be used, ensure that the
rating is equal or greater than that of the appliance.

Page 3
Installation
1. Remove all packaging. Do not remove the clear film on the inside of the door view-
ing screen.
2. Examine the oven for any damage. (A misaligned door, a dent in the cabinet)
3. If damaged, do not operate the oven and notify your dealer or the nearest Defy Ser-
vice Centre immediately.
4. The oven must be placed on a suitable flat, level and stable surface capable of sup-
porting the weight of the product.
5. Install the oven well away from Hi-Fi and TV sets, as broadcast reception could be
negatively affected.
6. Install the oven well away from heaters, or water taps.
7. Allow an air space of at least 30mm around the sides and rear of the oven and
100mm above the oven for ventilation purposes.
8. Do not block any of the air vents on the cabinet.
9. If the oven is not adequately vented , it may overheat and lead to failure.
Safety tips and instructions
1. Do not use the oven for any purpose other than for cooking food.
2. Do not operate the oven when it is empty.
3. Do not use the oven as a storage space.
4. Do not operate the oven without the glass tray and the roller guide in place.
5. Monitor the oven when cooking in plastic or paper containers to avoid accidental
ignition.
6. Avoid using recycled paper products for cooking as these could contain impurities
which could cause sparking.
7. Do not pop popcorn in the oven unless you use microwave popcorn in an approved
bag.
8. Pierce or puncture the skins of non porous foods such as egg yolk, sausages, pump-
kins and tomatoes before cooking.
9. Do not place eggs or nuts in their shells in the oven as they might explode.
10. Remove all caps or lids when cooking food in sealed containers.
11. Always test the temperature of food and drinks, especially feeding bottles and baby
food jars, before consumption, to avoid getting burnt.
12. Microwave heating of beverages could result in delayed eruptive boiling, so care
should be taken when handling such containers.
13. Never heat fat or oil in the microwave as the temperature can not be controlled and
combustion could result.
14. Keep the oven and waveguide cover clean at all times. Remove all traces of fat or
grease as these could ignite the next time the oven is used

Operation.
1. Insert the 3 pin plug into an earthed 15Amp wall socket and switch on the power.
2. Open the door.
3. Ensure that the glass tray, and roller guide are in position.
4. Place the food in a microwave approved cooking utensil and place it centrally on the
glass tray. Do not place food directly on the tray itself, unless the food is self con-
tained and will not spill. When cooking more than one item, arrange the food so that
items are evenly spaced.
5. Shut the door.
6. Select the power level by turning the power level selector knob to the required set-
ting.
7. Set the timer knob to the required cooking time. Note that the timer knob is marked
in minutes. ( The dual speed timer has a smaller angle for 10-35 minutes than the
period 0-10 minutes. This permits greater accuracy for short duration timing.) If the
cooking time is less than 2 minutes it is advisable to turn the timer knob past the two
minute mark for half a turn and then back to the required setting.
8. When the cooking time has expired a chime will sound and the oven will switch off
automatically
9. Open the door and remove the cooked food from the oven, using oven gloves.
10. Note : You may inspect the food at any time simply by opening the door. The oven
will stop and continue operation when the door is shut again.
11. Should you wish to remove the food before the selected time has expired, simply
turn the timer knob to 0. Conversely you can add to the time by advancing the timer
knob during the cooking process.
12. Do not allow the timer to operate once food has been removed from the oven.

Cooking utensils
1. Only use utensils suitable for use in microwave ovens.
2. Never use metal cookware or dinnerware with metal or gold foil. Arcing may occur
which could damage the oven and the dish.
3. Do not leave teaspoons, forks or metal skewers in the microwave oven
4. Do not use wire twisters on paper or plastic bags in the oven. Do not use a conven-
tional thermometer in the oven as it might explode. Aluminium foil may be used in
small quantities for shielding only. Any aluminium used should be more than 2.5cm
from the oven wall.
5. Wax paper may be used as a cover to avoid splatter.
6. Glass and ceramic heat proof dishes are excellent.
7. Undecorated china plates are also good.
8. Heat resistant plastic may also be used however polyethylene and melamine as well
as phenol are not recommended as they become very hot when used in the oven.
9. Wooden dishes may be used for short periods but as all wood has some moisture,
they may dry out and crack.
Cleaning ENSURE THAT THE OVEN CORD IS UNPLUGGED AT THE WALL SOCKET
Oven interior
1. After use , wipe away excess spills and splatter with a soft cloth. For heavy spills, a non
abrasive household cleaner may be used. Rinse with a damp cloth and dry with a clean
lint-free cloth.
2. To loosen stubborn particles it may be useful to place a cup of water on the glass tray,
switch on the oven and allow the water to boil. The resultant steam will soften particles,
making them easier to remove.
3. To remove strong odours it is recommended to place a cup of water with lemon juice
added on the tray and run the oven on high for 10 minutes.
4. Never pour water into the oven or attempt to clean the oven under a tap in the sink.
5. Do not use aerosol cleaners, caustic cleaners or abrasive scourers.
6. Do not use a steam cleaner, metal scrapers or steel wool.
Glass tray
1. Allow the tray to cool before cleaning it.
2. The tray is dishwasher proof and is easily removed. Wash in warm soapy water, rinse and
dry with a lint-free cloth.
3. Periodically wipe the floor and roller guide under the tray to remove any accumulated
soils.
Door
1. Wipe the window on both sides with a damp cloth.
2. Do not use a steam cleaner, scourers, abrasive, caustic cleaners, alcohol, thinners or vola-
tile liquids.
Exterior
1. Clean with a damp soapy cloth, rinse and dry.
2. Do not spill water in the air vents.
3. Do not use a steam cleaner, scourers, abrasive, caustic cleaners, alcohol, thinners or vola-
tile liquids.

Problem solving
1. If the food is not cooked at all: Check that the correct power level and cooking period have
been selected. That the oven door is closed and that there is electrical power to the oven.
Check the wall plug (plug in a kettle), house fuses and circuit breakers.
2. If the food is over or under cooked: Check that the correct power level and cooking period
have been selected.
3. If there are sparks and cracking sounds within the oven ( arcing): Check if any of the
dishes being used have metal rims or decorations. Check for metal or aluminium objects in
the oven.
4. There is condensation on the door and oven walls: This is normal especially if the food
being cooked has a high moisture content.
5. There is air movement round the door: This is normal. The door is not meant to be air-
tight.
6. There is steam escaping from the cabinet vents: This is normal.
7. There is TV or radio interference when the oven is in use: Try moving the oven further
away from the TV or radio.
