BEFORE OPERATION
Children
Tragic accidents can occur if the operator is not
alert to the presence of children. Children are
generally attracted to machines and associate
having fun with a lawn mowing machine simply
because someone has given them a ride on a
machine.
1. Keep children out of the operating area and
under the watchful eye of another responsible
adult when a mower is being operated.
2. Stay alert and turn machine off if children
enter the work area. Never assume children
will remain where you last saw them
3. Before and when backing, look behind for
small children.
4. Never carry children while operating the
machine or tow children in a cart or trailer.
They may fall off and be seriously injured or
interfere with the safe operation of the

10. Do not operate the machine while under
the influence of alcohol or drugs.
11. Do not wear radio or music headphones.
Safe service and operation require your
full attention.
12. Test drive area with mower lowered but
not running. Slow down when you travel
over rough ground.
13. Never direct deflector discharge towards
people or animals. A thrown debris can
cause serious injury.
14. Never operate mower near glass enclosures,
automobiles, window wells, embankments, etc.,
without proper adjustment of lawn discharge
angle.
15. Never operate mower without guards, and other
safety protective devices in place. All tractor and
mower shields and covers must be correctly
installed at all times. When necessary to remove
these, they must be reinstalled immediately.
16. Watch for holes, ruts, bumps, rocks, or other
hidden objects. Uneven terrain could overturn
the machine. Tall grass can hide obstacles.
17. Do not operate machine on wet grass. Tires may
lose traction. Tires may lose traction on slopes
even though the brakes are functioning properly.
18. Slow down and exercise extreme caution when
making turns and crossing roads and sidewalks.
Stop blades if not mowing. Watch for traffic
when operating near or crossing roadways. Stay
alert for hidden hazards or traffic.
19. Slopes are a major factor related to loss-of-
control and tip-over accidents, which can result
in severe injury or death Slow down and use
extra care on hillsides. Be sure to travel in the
recommended direction on hillsides. For this
machine, drive up and down hillsides, not
across. Turf conditions can affect the machine’s
stability. Use caution while operating near drop-
offs.
20. Slow down and use caution when making turns
and when changing directions on slopes.
21. Choose a low ground speed so you will not have

the tires lose traction, disengage the blades and
proceed slowly, straight down the slope.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS - continued
OM 0442MW-A 8
24. Do not operate machine near drop-offs,
ditches, embankments, or bodies of
water. The machine could suddenly roll
over if a wheel goes over the edge or the
edge caves in. Leave a safety area
between the machine and any hazard.
25. Use care when loading or unloading the
machine into or off of a trailer or truck.
26. Never operate machine at high transport
speeds on a slippery surface. Do not
change the engine governor setting or

or other objects that may obscure vision.
29. Low-hanging branches and similar
obstacles can injure the operator or
interfere with mowing operation. Before
mowing, identify potential obstacles such
as low-hanging branches, and trim or
remove those obstacles.
30. Keep clear of all rotating parts. Do not put
hands or feet under, or into mower and
subframe with engine running. Be
especially observant of the mower areas
of discharge, intake or all other
mechanical motions. Rotating blades can
cut off arms and legs, and throw objects
Failure to observe safety instructions
could result in serious injury or death
31. For your safety, do not work under any
hydraulically supported machine elements
that may creep down, suddenly drop or be
accidentally lowered.
32. Never operate with the discharge deflector
raised, removed or altered, unless using a grass
catcher. Do not operate mower without
discharge chute or entire grass catcher in place.
33. Stop equipment and inspect blades after striking
objects or if an abnormal vibration occurs. Make
necessary repairs before resuming operations.
34. Prolonged exposure to loud noise can cause
impairment or loss of hearing. Wear a suitable
hearing protective device such as earmuffs or
earplugs to protect against objectionable or
uncomfortable noises.
35. Always make sure all mower components are
properly installed and securely fastened
BEFORE operation.
36. Park the tractor/mower on level ground, place
the transmission in neutral, set the parking
brake, disengage the PTO, lower the mower to
the ground, place all control levers in neutral,
shut off the engine, remove the ignition key and
