A multi-task PMR446 transceiver
MIDLAND BASE CAMP is a PMR446 transceiver including the VHF MARINE BAND receiver
and AM/FM radio. MIDLAND BASE CAMP as been designed for being a multi-task equipment,
radio and transceiver, for communicating with other devices set to the same channel.
MIDLAND BASE CAMP is the ideal and daily time solution for all the outdoor activities, the
free time and why not, also for emergency and safety situations. As a matter of fact, BASE
CAMP has a built-in ashlight, and a built-in SOS Morse signal function, that allows the tran-
sceiver to send messages in code; moreover, the dynamo crank allows you to recharge the
radio during a power outage or anytime away from a power source. Through the USB jack it
is possible to recharge also other devices (mobile phone, iPod, mp3 players) by the dynamo
crank, AC or DC Adapter.
Its small size allows the user to realize radio communications also on the go.

OPERATIONS AND FUNCTIONS
POWER ON/OFF AND VOLUME
RotatethePOWER/VOLUMEknobclockwisetoturntheradioonandtoincreasethevolumelevel.
Rotatethecontrolcounter-clockwisetoreducethevolumelevelandtoturntheradiooff.
DuringPoweron,theLCDdisplaywillshowalliconsfor1secondandtheLCDdisplaywillindicate
thelastchannel/frequencyselected.
BAND SELECTION
SelectthePMRBAND usingtheBAND switch.Accordingtotheversionyoubought,youcan
chooseamongstthefollowingchannels:

CHANNEL SELECTION
InPMRmode,theLCDwilldisplaythechannelnumber(forex.P1).
Forselecting thedesiredchannel,youhavetoturnclockwise/counterclock-wisethe TUNING
KNOB.
TRANSMISSION AND RECEPTION
Tocommunicate,allradiosinyourgroupmustbesettothesameBAND(PMR)andtothesame
channel.
Totransmit,pressandholdthePTTbuttonandspeakinanormalvoiceintothemicrophone.The
“TX”iconwillappearcontinuouslyontheLCDdisplaywhiletransmitting.
Youcancommunicatealsousinganexternalaccessoryorahandmic,pressingandholdingthe

PTTbuttononthesideofthehandmic.Foramaximumclarity,holdthedeviceatadistanceof
about2/3cm.
ToreceiveaCALL,releasethePTTbutton.The“RX”iconwillappearonthedisplaywhenyour
radioisreceivingatransmission.
MONITOR
The MONITOR function allows you to exclude temporarily the automatic squelch for receiving
potentialweaksignals,whichwouldn’tbereceived.
ToactivatetheMONITOR,pressthe“MONITOR”button.
ThisfunctioncanbeactivatedexclusivelyinPMR/MARINEBAND.
SCAN
MIDLAND BASE CAMPcanSCANallchannelsforanyactivity.Whentheradioisinreceiving
mode,theSCANfunctionwillstop,andwillresumescanning5secondsafterthesignalisnolon-
gerpresent.Thisfunctionisusefultocontrolwhichchannelsarefree.
WhenyoupressthePTTbuttontotransmitonanactivechannel,thescanningfunctionwillstop
andremainontheactivechannel.
Toresumescanning,quicklypresstheSCANbutton.
ThisfunctioncanbeusedonlyinPMR/MARINEBAND.
KEYPAD LOCK
Pressforabout5secondstheLOCK/CALLbutton;theKEY LOCKiconwillappearonthedisplay.
Inthisway,thelockfunctionisactivatedandtheMENUandSCANbuttonwillbedisable.
ThisfunctioncanworkonlyinPMR/MARINEBAND.
Repeatthesameproceduretounlockthekeypad.
DISPLAY ILLUMINATION
Inclockmode(poweroff)thedisplayilluminationcanbeactivatedbypressingtheMENUbutton,
orturningthe TUNING KNOB.
Duringpoweron,thedisplayilluminationwillactivateforapprox.5seconds.Thedisplayillumina-
tioncanalsobeactivatedpressingthemajorityofthebuttons.(Poweron)
CTCSS/DCS TONES
TheCTCSS/DCStonesarecodesthatcanbeaddedtothepre-setchannelforcreatingnewpriva-
teones.Foreachchannelyoucanchooseuntil38CTCSScodesand83DCScodes.
Theaddictionofthesecodescanbemadeonthesefollowingchannels:
PMR446-onlyonthemainPMRchannels(fromP1toP8).Thepre-setchannelsfrom9pto24p
cannotbemodied.
ToselectaprivacycodeforthecurrentchannelpresstheMENUbuttononce,thenturntheTU-
NINGknobtoselectthechosecode.ThePrivacyselectedCodewillappearonthedisplay.
Toconrmtheselection,pressthePTTbuttonorwaitfor5seconds.
ToactivatetheDCScodes,presstheMENUbuttontwice,thenturntheTUNINGknobtoselectthe
desiredcode.ThePrivacyselectedCodewillappearonthedisplay.
Toconrmtheselection,pressthePTTbuttonorwaitfor5seconds.
TodisabletheCTCSS/DCSfunctions,selecttheprivatecodeandthenpresstheMENUbutton,
untilvisualizetheashingCTCSSPrivacyCodeontherightofthedisplay.Selectthen“off”,turning

Note:ifyouselectanyCTCSSPrivacyCode,anypre-selectedDCSPrivacyCodewillbedeleted

TRANSMIT (TX) POWER LEVEL SELECTION
MIDLAND BASE CAMPhas2powerlevelsettings.Toselectthepowerlevel,theradiomustbeon
PMRmodeonP1-P8channels.PresstheMENUbuttonuntila“Pr”iconwillappearonthedisplay,
thenturntheTUNINGknobtoselecttheTRANSMITPOWERLEVELHigh(H)orLow(L).Onthe
displayitwillappearHorLaccordingtothepowerselected.
Toconrm,pressthePTTbuttonorwait5seconds.
Whenthebatteryiscompletelycharged,themaximumpoweris500mW(ERP),whilethelowest
oneis10mW(ERP).
Thankstothisfunction,ifyoudon’thavetocoverwidedistances,youcanselectthe“lowpower”
modeandso,increasethebatterylife.
! When the battery Meter drops to 1 bar , the TX Power will automatically switch from
Hi (H) to Lo (L) level.
VOX
MIDLAND BASE CAMPhas4VOXlevels(off,1,2,3,and4).Thisfunctionallowstheuserto
activatethecommunicationwithoutpressingthePTTbutton.Youjusthavetospeakandthecom-
municationison.
YoucansettheVOXon3levels,withorwithoutaccessories.
ThefourthlevelactivatestheVOXwithTalkbackfunction:whenoneofthetwodevicestransmitfor
morethan20seconds,theVOXTalkbackstopsthetransmissionfor10seconds;sotheotheruser
hashimselftheopportunitytotalk.

TheDUAL WATCHfunctionenablesuserstoMONITOR,onlyinreception,2selectedchannels

ToturnontheDUAL WATCHfunction,presstheMENUbuttonuntilthedisplayshows“DW of”.
Selectthesecondchannelbyturningthe TUNINGknob.Toselect oneofthe38CTCSS/DCS
PrivacyCodesforthesecondchannelpressagaintheMENUbuttonandselecttheprivacycode
turningtheTUNINGknob.
ToconrmpressthePTTbuttonorwaitfor5seconds.
Thedisplaywillshow“DW”alternativelythechannelinuseandthesecondoneselected.
ToturnofftheDUAL WATCHfunction,youcanjustpresstheSCANbuttonortheMENUone.
Whentheradiowillreceiveasignalononeofthetwochannelsselected,the“DUAL WATCH”
functionwilltemporarilystop,allowingthetransmissionandthereceptionoftheactivesignalon
thechannelinuse.
MIDLAND BASE CAMPwillstayintheactivechannelaslongasthesignalispresentandwill
resumescanning5secondsafterthesignalisnolongerpresent.
MARINE BAND
SelecttheMARINEBANDusingtheBANDswitch,thedisplaywillshowtheleastselectedchannel
andtheMARINEicon. MARINEBANDcannottransmit,butonlyreceivesignals.
WhenyouareinMARINEmode,thedisplaywillshowthenumberofthechannel(forex.1d).
Toselectthedesiredchannel,turnclockwiseorcounter-clockwisetheTUNINGknob.
InMARINEBAND,youcanactivatealsotheSCAN,MONITORandLOCKfunctions.
AM/FM RECEIVER MODE
BASE CAMPcanreceiveAM/FMfrequencies,byselectingthroughtheBANDswitchthedesired
mode.ThedisplaywillshowtheselectedAM/FMBANDandtheactivefrequency.
Selecting the frequency on AM/FM BAND
ToselecttheAM/FMfrequency,turnclockwiseandcounter-clockwisetheTUNINGknob.Holding
theknobfor2seconds,theradiowillSCANforthefrequenciesuntilitreceivesastrongandclear
signal; if you keep holding the knob clockwise or counter-clockwise for 5 seconds, the SCAN
functioniscontinuous,untilyoustopitjustturningslightlytheTUNINGknoborpushingthePTT
button.
Memorizing the frequency
BASE CAMPcanstore2selectedfrequenciesinAMand2inFMBAND.Tomemorizetherst
frequency,pressfor5secondstheLOCK/CALLbuttonwhileforthesecondonekeeppressing
theSCANbutton.

SETTING THE CLOCK MODE
WhenBASE CAMPisoff,thedisplayshowsthecurrenttimesetting.
Tovisualizetheclockwhiletheradioison,justturnthePOWER/VOL knobonoff.
To change the hour setting of the clock:
Pressthe- LOCK/CALL/HOURbutton,andthehourdigitoftheclockwillblink.
Turnthe- TUNINGknobtochangethehoursetting.
Toconrm,pressthe- PTT/SELECTbuttonorwaitfor5seconds.
To change the minute setting of the clock:
Pressthe- SCAN/MINUTEbuttonwhileinCLOCKmodeandtheminutedigitoftheclockwill
blink.
Turnthe- TUNINGknobtochangethehoursetting.
Toconrm,pressthe- PTT/SELECTbuttonorwaitfor5seconds.
SETTING THE ALARM CLOCK
BASE CAMPcanalsofunctionasanALARM CLOCK.
To turn the ALARM CLOCK on:
PresstheMONITOR/ALARM ON/OFFbuttonwhileinCLOCKmode,theALARMCLOCKicon
willappearonthedisplay.
TosetthehoursettingoftheALARM,presstheLOCK/CALL/HOURbuttonwhileinCLOCKmode
andthehourdigitoftheclockwillblink.TurntheTUNINGknobtochangethehoursetting.To
conrm,pressthePTT/SELECTbuttonorwaitfor5seconds.
TosettheminutesettingoftheALARM,presstheSCAN/MINUTEbuttonwhileinCLOCKmode,
andtheminutedigitoftheclockwillblink.TurntheTUNINGknobtochangetheminutesetting.
Toconrm,pressthePTT/SELECTbuttonorwaitfor5seconds.
To turn the ALARM CLOCK off:
Todisablethealarmclock,presstheMONITOR/ALARM ON/OFFbuttonwhileinCLOCKmode.
willdisappear.
Instead,ifyoupresstheMENU/MONITOR/SCAN-LOCK-CALLbutton,thealarmclockiconwill
stillbedisplayed,butthealarmwillringthedayafteratthesametime,thatis,after24hoursfrom
thepre-settingalarmtime.
Setting the alarm clock snooze
WhentheALARM CLOCKgoesoff,youcanactivatetheSNOOZEfunctionbypressingthePTT/
SNOOZEbutton.EverytimetheSNOOZEbuttonispressedtheALARM CLOCKwillgooffagain
after8minutes.
USING THE FLASHLIGHT
BASE CAMPhasabuilt-inFLASHLIGHT.
ToturntheFLASHLIGHT ON,settheLIGHTswitchto“on”.

RECHARGING THE BATTERY PACK
MIDLAND BASE CAMPisequippedforusinga6VNiMHrechargeablebatterypackwhichcanbe
rechargedusinganACwalladapter(included)oraDCadapter(included).
Initialchargetimeis12hourswithachargetimeof8/10hoursthereafter.
Formaximumbatterylife,werecommendchargingthebatterypackwhentheBASE CAMPisoff
andthelowbatteryicon comeson.
Torechargethebatterypackyouneedtoconnectthesocketofthewalladaptortoamainspower
socketandinsertthejackofthewalladaptorintothechargingjackoftheBASE CAMP.
RemoveMIDLAND BASE CAMPfromthechargeronlywhenthechargetimeexpires.
YoucanalsochargetherechargeableNiMHbatterypackusingtheDynamocrank.Tochargeusing
theDynamoCrankrotaterapidlytheDynamoCrankhandleclockwiseorcounter-clockwise.
WARNING
! The supplied wall charger is using “standard charging” method. This is a method, whe-
re the charging current is about 10 % of the capacity and the batteries will be charged
over night or within 10-14 hours. Using this method, chargers do not automatically
disconnect charging when batteries are fully charged. It does not matter if you let the
