OPERATINGPRECAUTIONS
Thisisapropane,direct-fired,forcedairheater.Itsintended
useisprimarilytemporaryheatingofbuildingsunder
construction,alterationorrepair.
Propaneisheavierthanair.Ifpropaneleaksfroma
connectionor fitting,itsinks tothe floor,collectingthere
withthesurroundingair,formingapotentiallyexplosive
mixture.Obviously,propaneleaksshouldbeavoided,soset
upthepropanesupplywithutmostcare.Readenclosed
OdorFadeandPropaneSheetforadditionalinformation
aboutdetectingpropaneleaks.Leakchecknewconnections
orreconnectionswithasoapandwatersolutionandfollow
allconnectioninstructionsherein.Also,askyourpropane
dealerforadviceonthepropaneapplicationandsupply
installationandaskhimtocheckitifthereareany
questions.
Thisheaterwasdesignedandcertifiedforuseasa
constructionheaterinaccordancewithANSIStandard
Z83.7/CGA2.14-2000.Checkwithyourlocalfiresafety
authorityifyouhaveanyquestionsaboutyourapplications.
Otherstandardsgoverntheuseoffuelgasesandheat
producingproductsinspecificapplications.Yourlocal
authoritycanadviseyouaboutthese.
Direct-Firedmeansthatallofthecombustionproducts
entertheheatedspace.Eventhoughthisheateroperates
verycloseto100percentcombustionefficiency,itstill
producessmallamountsofcarbonmonoxide.Carbon
monoxide(calledCO)istoxic.Wecantoleratesmall
amountsbutnotalot.COcanbuildupinaheatedspace
andfailuretoprovideadequateventilationcouldresultin
death.
Thesymptomsofinadequateventilationare:
•headache
•dizziness
•burningeyesandnose
•nausea
• dry mouth or sore throat
So,besuretofollowadviceaboutventilationinthese
operatinginstructions.
ForcedAirmeansthatablowerorfanpushestheair
throughtheheater.Propercombustiondependsuponthis
airflow;therefore,theheatermustnotberevised,
modifiedoroperatedwithpartsremovedormissing.
Likewise,safetysystemsmustnotbecircumventedor
modifiedinordertooperatetheheater.
Whentheheateristobeoperatedinthepresenceofother
peopletheuserisresponsibleforproperlyacquainting
thosepresentwiththesafetyprecautionsandinstructions,
andofthehazardsinvolved.
SAFETYPRECAUTIONS
1. Checktheheaterthoroughlyfordamage.DONOToperate
adamagedheater.
2. DONOTmodifytheheateroroperateaheaterwhichhas
beenmodifiedfromitsoriginalcondition.
3. Useonlypropanegas.
4. UseonlyVAPORWITHDRAWALpropanesupply.Ifthereis
anyquestionaboutvaporwithdrawal,askyourpropane
dealer.
5. Mountthepropanecylindersvertically(shutoffvalveup).
Securethemfromfallingorbeingknockedoverandprotect
themfromdamage.
6. Locatepropanecontainersatleast(USA)7ft.(2.13m),
(Canada)10ft.(3m)from theheater and donot direct
exhausttowardcontainers.
7. IMPORTANTUseonlythehoseandregulatorassembly
providedwith theheater. Matchthe colorstripeonthe
hangtagattachedtothehoseassemblywiththecoloron
thelabel locatednearthepropaneinlet fittingonthe
heater.Inspecthoseassemblybeforeeachuseofthe
heater.Ifthereisexcessiveabrasionorwear,orhoseiscut,
replacewithhoseassemblylistedonpartslistbeforeusing
heater.

9. Ifatanytimegasodorisdetected,IMMEDIATELY
DISCONTINUEoperationuntilthesourceofgashasbeen

LPgasandnaturalgashaveman-madeodorantsadded
specificallyfordetectionoffuelgasleaks.
Ifagasleakoccursyoushouldbeabletosmellthefuel
gas. SincePropane(LP)isheavierthanairyoushould
smellforthegasodor low to thefloor.ANYGASODOR
ISYOURSIGNALTOGOINTOIMMEDIATEACTION!
• Donot takeanyaction thatcouldignite thefuelgas. Donot
operateanyelectricalswitches.Donotpullanypower
supplyorextensioncords.Donotlightmatchesoranyother
sourceofflame.Donotuseyourtelephone.
• Geteveryoneoutofthebuildingandawayfromthearea
immediately.
• Closeallpropane(LP)gastankorcylinderfuelsupplyvalves,
orthemainfuelsupplyvalvelocatedatthemeterifyouuse
naturalgas.
• Propane(LP)gasisheavierthanairandmaysettleinlow
areas.Whenyouhavereasontosuspectapropaneleak,
keepoutofalllowareas.
• Useyourneighbor’sphoneandcallyourfuelgassupplier
andyourfiredepartment.Donotre-enterthebuildingor
area.
• Stayout ofthebuilding andawayfrom thearea until
declaredsafebythefirefightersandyourfuelgassupplier.
• FINALLY,letthefuelgasservicepersonandthefirefighters
checkforescapedgas.Havethemairoutthebuildingand
areabeforeyoureturn.Properlytrainedservicepeoplemust
repairanyleaks,checkforfurtherleakages,andthenrelight
theapplianceforyou.

• Somepeoplecannotsmellwell.Somepeoplecannotsmell
theodoroftheman-madechemicaladdedtopropane(LP)
ornaturalgas.Youmustdetermineifyoucansmellthe
odorantinthesefuelgases.
• Learntorecognizetheodorofpropane(LP)gasandnatural
gas.Localpropane(LP)gasdealerswillbemorethanhappy
togiveyouascratchandsniffpamphlet.Useittobecome
familiarwith the fuelgasodor.

levels.SincePropane(LP)gasisheavierthanair,theremay
bemoreodoratlowerlevels.
• Alwaysbesensitivetotheslightestgasodor.Ifyou
continuetodetectanygasodor,no matter howsmall,
treatitasaseriousleak.Immediatelygointoactionas
discussedpreviously.

• Propane(LP)gashasadistinctiveodor.Learntorecognize
theseodors.(ReferenceFuelGasOdorandOdorFading
sectionsabove)
• EvenIfyouarenotproperlytrainedintheserviceand
repairoftheheater,ALWAYSbeconsciouslyawareofthe
odorsofpropane(LP)gasandnaturalgas.
• Ifyouhavenotbeenproperlytrainedinrepairandservice
ofpropane(LP)gasthen donot attempttolightheater,
performserviceorrepairs,ormakeanyadjustmentstothe
heaterorthepropane(LP)gasfuelsystem.
• Aperiodicsniff testaroundtheheaterorattheheater’s
joints;i.e.hose,connections,etc.,isagoodsafetypractice
underanyconditions.Ifyousmellevenasmallamountof

OPERATINGINSTRUCTIONS
PREPARINGFOROPERATION
1. Checktheheaterforpossibleshippingdamage.Ifanyis
found,immediatelynotifythefactory.
2. Followallofthe“Precautions”.
3. ConnectthePOLfittingofhoseandregulatorassemblyto
thepropanecylinderbyrotatingthePOLnut
counterclockwiseintothepropanecylinder’svalveoutlet
andsecurelytightenwithawrench.
4. Connectthehose tothe heaterby rotatingthe hosefitting
clockwise.
5. Securelytightenallgasconnections.
6. Openthecylinder’sgasvalveandcheckallgasconnections
withasoapandwatersolution.DONOTUSEAFLAME.
7. Connectpowercordtowell-grounded115V,60Hz,1Ø
sourceofpower.
8. Whenusinganextensioncord,makecertainthatitisa3-
wire(grounded)cordofproperwiresize.
START
1. Slowlyopenthemainvalveatpropanecylindertoprevent
excessflowcheckvalvefromclosing.
2. Setthermostattofullon. Heaterwilligniteautomatically.
3. Adjustballvalveoncontrolpaneltodesiredburnrate.
4. Setthermostattodesiredtemperature.Heaterwillturnoff
andonautomaticallyasthetemperaturevariesinthe
heaterarea.
STOP
1. Securelyclosevalveonthepropanecylinder.
2. Continuetooperateheateruntilallfuelinthehosehas
burned.
3. Turntheheater thermostat to “off”. Forextendedshut
downorinareaswherethetemperatureisbelow0°F,
unplugtheheater.
RESTARTAFTERSAFETYSHUTDOWN
1. Securelyclosevalveatpropanecylinder.Unplugheater.
2. Wait5minutes.
3. Restartfollowing“Start”procedure.
MAINTENANCEANDSTORAGE
1. Theheatershouldbeinspectedbeforeeachuse,andat
leastannuallybyaqualifiedperson.
2. Beforeeachuse,checkthesoft“O”ringseatatthe
bullnose of the POL fitting. If the “O” ring is cut, scuffed, or
otherwise damaged, replace it with part number
73786.
3. Turn off the gas at the LP-gas supply cylinder(s) when
the heater is not in use.
4. Whentheheateristobestoredindoors,theconnection
betweentheLP-gassupplycylinder(s)andtheheatermust
bedisconnectedandthecylinder(s)removedfromthe
heaterandstoredoutofdoorsandinaccordancewith
Chapter5ofthestandardforStorageandHandlingof
LiquefiedPetroleumGasesANSI/NFPA58andCSAB149.1,
NaturalGasandPropaneInstallationCode.
SERVICING
Ahazardousconditionmayresultifaheaterisusedthathas
beenmodifiedorisnotfunctioningproperly.
Whentheheaterisworkingproperly:
• Theflameiscontainedwithintheheater.
• Theflameisessentiallybluewithperhapssomeyellow
tipping.
• Thereisnostrongdisagreeableodor,eyeburningor
otherphysicaldiscomfort.
• Thereisnosmokeorsootinternalorexternaltothe
heater.
• Therearenounplannedorunexplainedshutdownsof
theheater.
Thepartslistsandwiringdiagramshowtheheaterasitwas
constructed.Donotuseaheaterwhichisdifferentfromthat
shown.Inthisregard,useonlythehose,regulatorandcylinder
connectionfitting(calledaPOLfitting)suppliedwiththeheater.
IMPORTANTMatchthecolorstripeonthehangtagattachedto
thehoseassemblywiththecoloronthelabellocatednearthe
propaneinletfittingontheheater.Donotusealternates.For
thisheater,theregulatormustbesetasshownin
“specifications”.Ifthereisanyuncertaintyabouttheregulator
setting,haveitchecked.
Aheater whichisnotworking rightmustbe repaired,but only
byatrained,experiencedserviceperson.
In-warrantyproductswillberepairedwithnochargeforeither
partsorlabor.Pleaseincludeabriefstatementindicatingdate,
placeofpurchase,thenatureoftheproblemandproofof
purchase.
Out-of-warrantyproductswillberepairedwithachargefor
partsandlabor.
