OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
FLAIL MOWER 1070mm (42”)

DESCRIPTION
The FM42 is powered by a 9Hp Honda petrol engine complete with electric start.
The flails are free floating on a chain link to the rotor shaft.
The tow bar has two operating positions, one in the centre of the machine and
the other to one side where it is beneficial not to run on the standing growth
before cutting.
The throttle control and engine emergency stop safety switch can be easily
reached from the tractor seat.
The transport wheels are situated at the rear of the machine. The safety of the
operator is very much in mind when designing this type of machine. Guards are
provided to stop the operator’s feet accidentally being offered to the flails.
Suitable for towing behind 18Hp plus tractors, ATVs and quads.
The one piece rear roller prevents scalping. A Clevis Hitch fitted as standard.

SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
All operators must be familiar with these instructions
1. The flail mower must never be moved with the engine running when not
attached to the towing unit.
2. Never place hands or feet under the flail mower.
3. Never attempt to clear blockages whilst the engine is running.
4. Never attempt any maintenance or height of cut adjustment whilst the
engine is running.
5. Do not clean the flail mower with the engine running.
6. You must switch off the engine before dismounting from the towing
vehicle.
7. Never leave the flail mower unattended with the engine running.
Should the engine stop from overloading, never attempt to use the self-starter in
the same location as it stopped.
1. Remove the machine away from the work area.
2. Pull the manual start cord to make sure the cutting rotor is free.
3. If applicable, clear the rotor until the machine is free.
4. If the rotor is free, use the key-start.

MAINTENANCE
1. Clean the unit after use.
2. Check to see all nuts and bolts are tight.
3. Care for the engine as per manual.
4. Grease the following twice yearly:
Rear transport wheels –nipples in the centre of the wheel.
Main rotor shaft - one is on the exposed side, the other is
visible by removing the side belt guard.
Rear jack leg nipple at the top by the screw handles.
The main drive shaft - remove the guard between the engine
and the belt guard - 2 grease nipples are exposed.
5. Lightly oil the screw bottle jack on the tow bar adjuster twice yearly.
Remember the cutting flails may revolve for a short period after the engine
is switched off.

ENGINE SAFETY & OPERATION
Follow the engine instruction & safety manual.
Position the safety switch to ‘on’
Always adjust the speed setting on the hand lever.
Never try to use the speed control on the engine.
Operation:
1. Have the engine running at full throttle.
2. Travel at such a speed as to allow the engine to remain at a high RPM.
Do not travel at speeds which cause the flail mower to bounce.
HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT
Stop engine and remove the key before adjusting the height.
To adjust the height, lower or raise the rear roller. The flail mower must be on
level ground during this process.
Ensure the roller has even adjustment both sides.
Securely tighten the adjusting nuts.
After adjusted the rear roller to the required height, alter the adjustment
on the towing bracket to keep the flail mower level.
Do not allow the adjustment to such a position where the flail will come in
contact with the ground.

BELT ADJUSTMENT
Stop engine and remove the key before adjusting the belt.
1. Remove the belt guard.
2. On the belt tensioner plate, slacken the bottom mounting bolt.
3. Slacken the mounting bolt situated in the middle slot.
4. Push the bracket into the belts.
5. Whilst holding the bracket, tighten both holding bolts.
6. Replace the guard.
TRANSPORT WHEELS
The two pneumatic transport wheels situated at the rear of the unit are for
transporting the mower from storage to the cutting area.
The wheels must be fully raised before starting or working.
To lower:
1. Slacken the lock bolt on the adjustor leg (if fitted) or remove the
retaining pin.
2. Wind down the wheels until the rear roller is just clear of the ground.
3. Tighten the lock bolts.
To raise:
Follow the steps above in reverse. Make sure the lock bolt is fully tightened
before commencing work (if fitted) or the retaining pin is in place.

HOW TO CHANGE THE TOWBAR FROM OFFSET / MIDDLE
1. Find some firm ground, and unhitch the flail mower from the towing
vehicle.
2. Drop down the prop leg
3. Raise the Jockey Wheel
4. Uncouple the adjustable top link by removing the pin closest to the
mower body.
5. Remove the towbar attaching pin and gently pull the tow bar away from
the mower being careful not to damage the cables that are attached to
it.
6. Move the tow bar across the required position and push the securing pin
through to attach the tow bar to the mower.
7. Reattach the top link
8. Wind down the jockey wheel so that the prop leg is off the ground
9. Raise the prop leg
10. Couple up to the towing vehicle and raise the jockey wheel
WARRANTY
Your unit is guaranteed for 12 months from date of purchase. This guarantee
covers faults which may occur from defective parts or manufacture.
The flail rotor of your machine was balanced at our works prior to despatch.
Should excessive vibration start on the cutter, damage to the rotor has taken
place. This is caused mainly by:
A flail has become detached or damaged
The rotor hitting old stumps or rocks, bricks etc.
Cutting too low to the ground on uneven surfaces allowing the flails to
hammer the grounds.
Should the rotor be bent out of true there is no warranty on the product.
