Overview
1-1 Features
DMW-S05NL-C is a high-cost-performance non-linear
editing system. Various editing components are unified
and editing with high picture quality and easy
operation is realized, making it the ideal DTV
production system.
The XPRI Series has the following features.
High-quality video signal processing
SDTV system: Supporting uncompressed signals
HDTV system: Supporting uncompressed (1080/
59.94i, 1080/50i, 1080/24PsF and 1080/23.98PsF)
and compressed HDCAM signals
MPEG: Supporting MPEG IMX 30/40/50 signals
Convenient operation
Based on industry-standard conventions with further
improvements to enhance ease of operation, the
operating environment provides a consistent look
across all modules. The Control Panels are efficient
and easy to operate, reflecting Sony’s many years of
experience in designing editing systems for the
broadcast and production industries.

1-2-1 Main Unit
The Main Unit is comprised of the following devices
and accessories.
Digital Media Workstation
This is a high-performance workstation with dual-CPU
processor. It is used in an integrated configuration with
the AV I/O Block. The Digital Media Workstation has
the following features.
•Five PCI slots (64 bits)
•Dual-monitor VGA board
•Internal Ultra 320 Wide SCSI hard disk drive (1)
•Internal Ultra 320 SCSI hard disk drive (4)1)
•DVD±RW drive (5-inch bay) (1)
•Windows 2000 Professional operating system
•5U size (Digital Media Workstation + AV I/O
Block), rack mountable
Connecting cables
Use the following USB cables (supplied) to connect
Control Panels to this system.
AV I/O block
Integrated with the Digital Media Workstation, the AV
I/O block provides the system’s AV I/O connections.
AV Processing Board
This board features a built-in codec, and enables video
and audio I/O (2 SDI inputs and outputs) and A/V
signal processing.
2Gb Fibre Channel Interface Board
(LSI44929o) (fabricated by LSI Logic)1)
This board can be used to connect a 2Gb fibre channel
storage unit to the XPRI System. It is provided with
two 200-MB/s fibre channel ports and enables high-
rate data transfer between the XPRI System and the
2Gb fibre channel storage unit.
DMW-IF01 SDTI Interface Board2)
This is a 32 bit/33 MHz PCI board supporting SDTI
signals.
Installing this board enables SDTI3) connections with
VTRs supporting MPEG IMX and VTRs supporting
HDCAM. MPEG compressed and HDCAM
compressed video signals can be recorded directly to
hard disk in their compressed state.

DMW-IF02 HDTV Interface Board2)
This is a 64 bit/33 MHz PCI board with an HD-SDI
(HD Serial Digital Interface). It features a built-in
HDCAM codec and enables HD-SDI connections
between the Digital Media Workstation and HDTV
devices.
DMW-RT02 Realtime Video Processing
Board2)
Installing this board in the XPRI System enables a
variety of video effects such as 3D transformation,
page turn and ripple to be applied to HDTV/SDTV
video signals.

DMW-RT01 SDTV Realtime Processing
Board1)
Installing this board in the XPRI System enables a
variety of video effects such as 3D transformation,
page turn and ripple to be applied to SDTV video
signals.
For details, refer to the DMW-RT01 Installation Manual.

The option boards that can be installed in the system
are as follows.

1-2-2 Control Panels
Four Control Panels are provided to facilitate XPRI
editing system operations, as described below. You
can select the panels you need and position them as
required.
DMW-C1 Media Bar Control Panel1)
This panel has eight knobs and two buttons. You can
use them to adjust parameters for material color
correction, equalizing, compositing, and so on.
This unit is used by connecting it to the Jog & Shuttle
Control Panel or the Audio Control Panel.
DMW-C2 Jog & Shuttle Control Panel1)
This panel is used to control VTRs and make editing
operations. It has function buttons and a search dial.
This panel is connected to the Digital Media
Workstation or to the Audio Control Panel using the
supplied USB cable. It is powered by the supplied AC
adaptor.

DMW-C3 Audio Control Panel1)
This panel provides audio faders. It has eight faders for
audio tracks and one master fader. It also has a muting
button, function buttons, a headphones audio level
control knob, and monitor setting buttons.
This panel is connected to the Digital Media
Workstation or to the Jog & Shuttle Control Panel by
using the supplied USB cable. When monitoring audio
with headphones, the cable with RCA phono plugs
(not supplied) is used to connect this panel to the AV I/
O Block. The Audio Control Panel is powered by the
supplied AC adaptor.

This panel is used in keyframe operations for 3D
effects. It has a trackball and Z ring, and six function
buttons.
This panel is used by connecting it to the Jog & Shuttle

XPRI Editing Software
This is high-image-quality, high-performance video
editing software that supports SDTV, HDTV and
MPEG IMX system materials, and a variety of import
file formats. It runs under the Windows 2000
Professional operating system, and uses the standard
Windows commands for editing operations. The
Control Panels also enable operation in a style similar
to conventional linear editing.
You can combine a Titler Software and audio tool to
expand your editing environment.

1HDD (hard disk drive) indicator (amber)
Lights in amber when data is being accessed on the
system hard disk contained in the Main Unit.
2STANDBY/ON switch
Press to power the Main Unit on.
For power off operation, see page 3-10.
Note
You can power the Main Unit off by pressing and
holding this switch for 4 seconds or more. However, to
power the Main Unit off, be sure to perform the
procedure on page 3-10 unless otherwise directed by
Sony service representative or unless trouble occurs.
3Power indicator (green)
Lights in green when the Main Unit has booted
normally.
4PHONES connector (stereo phone jack) and
LEVEL knob
You can connect headphones to monitor the audio
being edited. Rotate the LEVEL knob to adjust the
audio level.
5MON (monitor) indicator (green)
This indicator lights and goes out to indicate the
following.
Lit: The AV I/O Block is operating normally.
Flashing: A hardware malfunction has occurred in the
AV I/O Block.
Not lit: The AV I/O Block is in power-saving mode.
6OPE (operation) indicator (amber)
This indicator is lit when the CPU of the AV I/O Block
is operating.
7Floppy disk slot
Insert floppy disks here.
8Floppy disk eject button
Press to eject a floppy disk.
Note
Never eject a floppy disk when the floppy disk active
indicator is lit. Doing so can damage the data on the
floppy disk.
9Floppy disk active indicator (green)
Lights in green when the floppy disk drive is accessing
data.
q; Tray open/close button
Press to open or close the disc tray.
qa Disc tray
To load a disc, place it on this tray and then press the
tray open/close button.
qs Active indicator
Lights when the disc drive is accessing the data on a
disc.
qd Tray eject hole
If the disc tray does not open when you press the tray
open/close button, insert a narrow rod into this hole
and press the switch inside.

12).
