anddevelopingamower.However,everyyearaccidentsoccurwhichcouldhave
beenavoided byafewsecondsofthoughtandamorecarefulapproachtohan-
dling equipment. You,theoperator,can avoidmanyaccidentsbyobservingthe
following precautionsand insistthoseworking withyou,orforyou,followthem.
l Inordertoprovideabetterview, certainphotographsorillustrationsinthismanual
mayshowan assemblywithasafetyshieldremoved.However,equipmentshould
neverbeoperatedinthiscondition.Keepallshieldsinplace.Ifshieldremoval
becomesnecessaryfor repairs, replacethe shieldpriortouse.

Withfinishing mowerstill incrate,layflaton alevelsurface.Remove
the top&sidesectionsofthecrate,leavingthefinishingmowerresting
on thebottomsection. SetasidePTO shaft.
STEP2
Insert tail wheelarmsasshowninFigure Eandtightenboththebolt &jamnut.
STEP3
RaiseA – frameassembly(Fig.A&B,Marked #1)forwardandswivelbrace
arms(Marked#2)aroundtoward rearof themower. Hookthe bracearmstothe
tabs(Marked#3, Fig. C)onthe backofthe mowerwithboltsprovided.

throughtop 1/2”holeuntil lubricationislevelwithlower1/8"hole.
STEP4 Replaceboththe1/2” pipeplug(locatedattopofgear box)and1/8"pipe
plug (located at lower1/3of gearbox)andclean awayanyexcess oil.
STEP5 Fill spindleunits(3)withgreaseuntil full.Thereare easyaccess holesin
top coverfor greasing spindleunits. (FigureCpage 21)
STEP6 Greasewheelaxles(4),wheelforks(4),frontrolleraxle(1),and PTO
shaftuniversaljoints(2).(Figure Cpage21)
STEP7 Checkairpressureintires,maintainrated PSIlistedonthe tire atall
times.
STEP8 Checkall bolts,nutsandbelt toinsuretheyaretightandsecure.
CAUTION:
DO NOT overfill gearbox.Thiscouldcausedamagetooil sealsandcan causeper-
manent damagetothegearbox.Thisissue will not becovered underwarranty.

l Safetyisaprimaryconcerninthedesignandmanufactureofour product.Unfortu-
nately,oureffortstoprovidesafeequipmentcanbewipedoutbyasinglecareless
act of anoperator or bystander.
l Inadditiontothe designand configuration ofequipment, hazardcontrolandaccident
prevention are dependentupon the awareness,concern,prudenceand propertrain-
ing of personnelinvolvedintheoperation, transport, maintenanceandstorageofthis
equipment.
l Ithasbeen said,“The bestsafetydeviceisan informed,carefuloperator.”Weask
you tobe thatkind ofoperator.It istheoperator’sresponsibilitytoreadandunder-
standall safetyandoperatinginstructionsinthemanualandtofollowthem.Acci-
dentscanbe avoided.
l Working withunfamiliarequipmentcanleadtocareless injuries.Readthismanual,
andthemanualforyourtractor,beforeassemblyor operating,toacquaintyourself
withthemachines.If thismachineisusedbyanypersonotherthanyou,orisloaned
orrented, it isthefinishingmowerowner’sresponsibilitytomakecertainthatowner's
manualbeavailabletotheoperatorprior tooperating:
1- Readsand understandstheoperator’smanuals.
2- Isinstructedinsafeand properuse.
l Knowyourcontrolsandhowtostoptractor,engine,andthemowerquicklyinan
emergency.Read thismanualand theoneprovided withyourtractor.
l Trainall newpersonnelandreviewinstructionsfrequentlywithexistingworkers. Be
certainonlyaproperlytrainedandphysicallyablepersonwill operatethemachinery.
Apersonwhohasnotreadandunderstoodalloperatingandsafetyinstructionsisnot
qualifiedtooperatethemachine.Anuntrainedoperatorexposeshimselfandby
standerstopossibleseriousinjuryor death.Iftheelderlyare assisting withfarm
work, theirphysicallimitationsneedtobe recognizedandaccommodated.

PREPARTION
l Never operatethetractorandmower until youhaveread andcompletelyun-
derstandthismanual, theTractorOperator’sManual, andeachofthe safety
messagesfoundonthesafetysignson thetractorand mower.
l Personalprotectionequipmentincludinghardhat,safetyglasses,safetyshoes,and
glovesare recommended duringassembly,installation,operation,adjustment,
maintenance,repairing,removal,ormovingtheimplement. Donotallowlonghair,
loosefitting clothing,orjewelrytobe aroundequipment.
l PROLONGEDEXPOSURETOLOUDNOISE MAYCAUSE PERMANENTHEAR-
INGLOSS! Tractorswithor withoutmowersattached can oftenbe noisyenough to
causepermanent, partialhearing loss.Werecommend thatyouwearhearingpro-
tectiononafull-timebasisifthenoiseinthe operator’sposition exceeds80 db.
Noiseover 80 db onalong-termbasiscan causesevere hearing loss.Noiseover
90 db adjacenttotheoperator overalong-termbasismaycausepermanent,total
hearingloss. NOTE: Hearing loss from loud noise(fromtractors,chainsaws,radi-
os,andothersuchsourcesclosetothe ear) iscumulativeoveralifetimewithout
hopeof naturalrecovery.
l Operatethemoweronlywithatractor equipped withan approved Roll-Over-
ProtectiveSystem(ROPS).Alwayswear yourseatbelt. Seriousinjuryofeven death
couldresultfromfallingoffthetractor — particularlyduringaturnoverwhenthe op-
eratorcouldbe pinnedunderthe ROPSor the tractor.
l Clear areatobecutofstones,branchesor otherdebristhatmightbethrown,caus-
ing injuryordamage.
l Operateonlyindaylight orgoodartificiallight.
l Ensuremower isproperlymounted, adjustedand ingoodoperating condition.
l Ensurethatallsafetyshieldingandsafetysignsareproperlyinstalledandingood
condition.
STARTINGAND STOPPING SAFETY
l Checkthetractormastershieldover thePTO stubshaft. Makesureit isingoodcon-
dition andfastened securelytothetractor.Purchaseanewshieldifoldshieldis
damaged or missing.
l All tractorsthatarenotequippedwitha“live”powertakeoff(PTO)need tobe
equipped withanover-runningPTOclutch.Theseareavailablethroughmostfarm
equipmentstores.NOTE:Theadditionofanover-running PTOclutchmaychange
the lengthof thePTO drivelinerequired. Payextraattentiontotheinstructionson the
PTO driveline Installation.Besurethatthe drivelinesystemguardingisadequate.
l Mower operating powerissupplied from tractorPTO. Refertoyour tractor manual
forPTOengagementanddisengagement instructions. Knowhowtostoptractorand
mower quicklyincaseofanemergency.
l When engagingPTO,theengineRPMshouldalwaysbeatidlespeed.Onceen-
gagedandreadytostartcutting,raisePTOspeedto540 RPMandmaintain
throughout cuttingoperation.

l The useofthisequipmentissubjecttocertainhazardsthatcannotbeprotected
againstbythemechanicalmeansorproductdesign.All operatorsofthisequipment
mustreadand understand thisentiremanual,payingparticular attention tosafety
andoperatinginstructions,prior tousing.Ifthereissomething inthismanualyoudo
notunderstand,askyour supervisor,oryourdealer, toexplainittoyou.
l Mostaccidentsoccurbecauseofneglectorcarelessness.Keepallhelpersandby-
standersatleastseveralhundredfeetfroman operatingfinishingmower.Only
properlytrained peopleshouldoperatethismachine.
lWhen machine isoperated inpopulatedareaswherethrownobjectscouldinjureper-
sonsor property, operationmustbestoppedwhenanyonecomeswithinseveral
hundredfeet.
l The majorityofthe accidentsinvolveentanglementonthedriveline, injuryofbystand-
ersbytheobjectsthrownbytherotatingblades, andoperatorsbeingknockedoff the
tractorbylowhanginglimbsandthenbeingrunoverbythemower.Accidentsare
mostlikelytooccurwithmachinesthatareloanedor rentedtosomeonewho hasnot
readthe owner’smanualand isnot familiar withafinishingmower.
l The finishingmower isdesignedforuseonlyon tractorswith 540-RPM power take
off.
l Installand secureall guardsand shieldsbeforestartingor operating.Thedischarge
chute,bands,flaps,drivelineguardsand tractor,shieldsshouldbe usedand main-
tained ingoodworkingcondition.Theyshouldbeinspectedcarefully,atleastdaily,
for missingor broken cable,chainlinks,shields,orguards.(Worn itemsmustbe re-
placedat oncetoreducepossibilityof injury)
l Disengagepowertakeoff(PTO)andplacetransmission inneutralbeforeattempting
tostartengine.
l Manyvaried objects,suchaswire,cable,rope,or chains,can becomeentangled
inthe operatingpartsofthemower.Theseitemscouldthen swing outside the
housingatgreatervelocitiesthan theblades.Suchasituationisextremelyhazard-
ous.Inspectthecutting areaforsuchobjectsbeforemowing.Removeanylikeob-
jectsfromthe site.

l Neverallowthecuttingbladetocontactsuchitems.Cutmaterialhigheratfirst,allow-
ing finishingmower toclear hiddenobjects.Never assumean area isclear.Always
Check!
l Alwaysstopthetractor,disengagePTO, setbrake,shutoffthetractorengine,re-
movethe ignitionkey, lower implement tothegroundandallowcutterbladestocome
toacompletestop beforedismountingtractor.Neverleaveequipmentunattended
withthe tractorrunning.
l Neverplacehandsorfeetunder mowerwithtractor enginerunning or before youare
sureall motion hasstopped.Stayclearof allmovingparts.
l Donotreachor placeanypartofyourbodyunderequipmentuntilitisblocked se-
curely.
l Donotallowridersonthefinishingmower ortractoratanytime.There isno safe
placeforanyriders.
l Donotoperateunlessallpersonnel,livestock,andpetsareseveralhundred feet
awaytopreventinjurybythrownobjects.Never directdischargechutetoward any-
one.
l Neveroperatetractorandfinishingmower undertreeswithlowhanginglimbs.Opera-
torscanbeknocked off the tractorand thenrun overbytherotatingblades.
l The rotatingpartsofthismachinehavebeendesignedandtestedforrugged use.
However,theycouldfail uponimpactwithheavy,solidobjectssuchassteelguard-
railsand concreteabutment. Suchimpactcouldcausethe broken objectstobe
thrownoutwardatveryhighvelocities.Toreducethepossibilityofpropertydamage,
seriousinjury,orevendeath,neverallowthecutting bladestocontactsuchobsta-
cles.
l Stop mowerandtractorimmediatelyuponstrikinganobstruction.Turnengineoff, re-
movekey,inspectand repairanydamage beforeresumingoperation.
l Stayalertfor uneventerrain,holes,rocks,androotsandotherhiddenhazards.Keep
awayfromdrop-offsand hazardsthatcouldcauseroll over. Useextremecare and
maintainminimumgroundspeedwhentransportingoroperatingonhillsides,over
roughgroundandwhenoperatingclosetoditchesorfences.Becarefuland slow
downwhenturningsharpcornersand changing directiononslopes.Donotstartor
stop suddenlyon slopes.Avoidoperation onsteepslopes.Inextremelyuneven ter
rain,rearwheelsweights,fronttractor weight,and/ortireballastshouldbeusedto
improvestability.

l Pass finishingmower diagonallythrough sharp dipsandavoidsharpdropstopre-
vent“hanging up” tractor and finishingmower.Practicewill improveyour skillsin
maneuvering on rough terrain.Alwayscutdownslopes,never across theface.Al-
wayschecktractor manualforproperuseonslopes.
l When using aunit, aminimum20%oftractor andequipmentweightmustbe on
tractorfrontwheels.Without thisweight, tractorcouldtipover,causingpersonalinju-
ryordeath.The weightmaybeattainedwithafront- endloader,frontwheel
weights,ballastinthetiresorfronttractorweights.When attainingaminimum20%
of tractorandequipment weightonthefrontwheels, youmustnotexceedtheROPS
weight certification.Weigh thetractor and equipment. Donotguessorestimate!
TRANSPORTSAFETY
l Complywithstateandlocallawsgoverninghighwaysafetyand movementoffarm
machineryon publicroads.
l The useofflashing amberlightsisacceptableinmostlocalities.However,somelo-
calitiesprohibittheiruse.Locallawsshouldbechecked for all lighting andmarking
requirements.
l Atall times,when drivingthetractorand equipmentontheroad or highwayunder
20 mph (32 kph) useflashing amberwarning lightsand aslowmovingvehicle
(SMV)identification emblem.Donotexceed20mph(32kph).Reducespeedon
rough roadsandsurfaces.
l Plan yourroutetoavoidheavytraffic.
l Alwaysinstall transportlocks, pinsor bracketsbefore transporting.
l Donot drinkand drive.
l Beasafeandcourteousdriver.Always yieldtooncomingtrafficinall situations,in-
cludingnarrowbridges,intersections,etc.Watchfortrafficwhenoperatingnearor
crossing roadways.
l Turn curvesorgoupordownhillsonlyat alowspeedandatagradualsteeringan-
gle.Makecertainthataleast20%ofthe tractor’sweightisonthe frontwheelsto
maintainsafesteerage.Slowdownonroughorunevensurface.Alwayscheck trac-
tor manualforproperuseon slopes.
l Useextremecareandmaintainminimum groundandwhenoperatingclosetoditch-
esorfences. Becarefulwhenturningsharpcorners.
l Neverallowridersoneithertractorormower.

STEP1 Attachtotractor's category1threepoint hitchasdescribedin
the Tractor's Operator’sManual.
WARNING
Failure toinstall retainingclipon gearboxinputshaft wouldallowdriveline toswing
freelyifbolt isshearedcausingpossibleinjuryor death.
STEP2
Determine ifthePTO shaftneedstobeshortened.
NOTE:
Due tothe manyvariationsinthetractorhitchpointsand distancesbetweenequip-
ment gearboxinputshaft andtractor PTO output shafts, some combinationsmay
requirePTO shaftstobeshortened asdescribedbythe following steps.
STEP3
Raiseandlower finishingmowerinorder tolocatetheshortestdistancebetween
equipmentgearboxinput shaft and tractor PTOoutputshaft.Withthe finishing
mower intheshortest distancepositionshutdownthetractorandSECURELY
BLOCKFINISHINGMOWERINPOSITION.
STEP4
Pull apartPTO shaft andattachoutersectiontotractor PTOoutputshaft. NOTE:
Besure topull onPTO shaft sectiontoensureyokehaslocked intoplace.
WARNING
Never standbetween
tractorand finishingmower
whilebacking up tractor
tothehitch.

STEP5
Placeand holdinnerPTOshaft section next tooutersection and check if
PTOshaftistoo long. Eachsectionshouldend approximately3inches
shortof reaching u-joint shieldon theoppositesection. If the shaft istoo
long measure3inchesbackfromeachu-joint shieldand markthe other
shaft section. BesuretodothisforbothPTOshaft halves.NOTE: Donot
cut PTOshaft sectionsat thistime.
STEP6
Raisefinishing mowerand removeblocking. Raiseandlowerfinishing
mowerinordertolocatethe longest distancebetweenequipment input
shaft and the tractorPTOoutput shaft. Withthefinishing mowerinthe
longest distanceposition shut downthe tractorand SECURELYBLOCK
THEFINISHINGMOWER IN POSITION.
STEP7
Asinstep5holdPTOshaft sectionstogetherand checkforaminimumof
6inchesof overlap. If PTOshaft hasbeen marked forcutting the overlap
isthe distancemeasured between the twomarks. If the PTOshaft has
less thana6inchoverlap, DONOTUSE. Contact yourauthorized Summit
TractorDealer.
NOTE
If the PTOshaft lengthistoo long goto SIZINGPTOSHAFT (pg. 18)
STEP8
Applyanymulti-purposegreasetothe outside of themale(inner) PTO
shaft section. AssemblePTOshaft and install on finishing mowerand trac-
tor.
WARNING - Failuretoinstall retaining clipongearboxinputshaft would
allowdriveline toswing freelyifboltis sheared causing possiblein-
juryordeath.
STEP9
Pull on tractorside of PTOshaft yoketobe sureit haslocked inplace.
MakecertainPTOshaft shielding isinplaceand good working condition.
STEP10
The PTOshaft shieldisanon-rotating design and mustbe secured priorto
equipmentuse.Using the chainon eachyokeshieldattachtoafixed object
on the tractorand equipmentendsthat will not allow the PTOshaft shieldtoro-
tateduring operation.

Using cutsectionofthe shieldasaguide

Thismowerwasdesigned toCUTLAWNGRASS ONLY. Useofyourfinishingmow-
er tocut anymaterialotherthanlawngrass maydamagethemower andvoidyour war-
ranty.
CUTTING HEIGHTADJUSTMENT
Toprevent bladesfromstriking thegroundyourfinishing mower shouldbe
set tothe highest position thatwill givedesiredgrass height.Bysettingyour
mowerupthiswayyoureducebladewearand stress on the mower. Mowing at
regular intervalswill yieldfar better resultsthanperiodicmowing. (i.e. weekly
vs. by-weeklymowing.)
STEP1
Raisefinishing moweroffthe groundwiththetractorandSECURELY
BLOCKINPOSITION.
STEP2
Removepinfromtopofwheelforkassembly.Lower wheelfork
assemblyfromtail wheelarm.
STEP3
Arrangespacersuntil desiredcuttingheightisachieved. Cuttingheightsrangefrom
approximately2.0-6.0inchesinheight.
STEP4
Reinstall wheelforkassemblyintotail wheelarmandinstall keeperpin.
STEP5
Repeatadjustment process on remaining wheelforkassemblies.
NOTE:Makesureall areadjustedtothesameheightforanevencut.

Read,understand,andfollowtheinformationonsafetytraining,preparation,starting
and stoppingsafety,operationalsafety,transportsafetywarningsectionsofthisman-
ual(pages11thru 16)
STEP3
Withtractorrunning,lowerfinishingmowertogroundsothattheswivellinks arepar-
alleltotheground.Thisallowsthefree-floating hitchsystemtofollowthecontourof
the ground,thusmowingevenlyonuneven terrain.
STEP4
WiththetractoratidleRPM,engagePTOandslowlyadvancethrottleto540 PTO
RPM. NOTE: Finishing mowerdesigned torun at540PTO RPMonly.
STEP5
Selectalowgearforthe tractorandbegintomow.Tractor groundspeed
istobe controlled bygear selection onlyandnotengine speed.Tractor
ground speedshouldallowfinishing mowertomaintain540PTORPMand
thusmaximumbladetipspeed.
NOTE: Donotallowthe tractorengineor finishing mower tobog downor stall.This
causesundue wearandtear on themower andtractor.If thiscontinuestohappenre-
ducegroundspeedandraisecuttingheightof finishingmower.Neverattempttoclean
outapluggeddischargechuteuntilthetractorhasbeenshutdownandthemower
bladeshavecompletelystopped.
STEP6
After eachusecleanall debrisfrom the topandbottomofthefinishing mow-
er.Replaceanymissing orillegiblesafetydecals.Inspectfor anydamaged
or wornpartsandreplacebeforenextuse. Storefinishingmowerinadryen-
vironment.
