GENERAL SAFETY RULES
WARNING! Failure to follow these rules may result in serious personal injury or death.
IMPORTANT: Before switching the drill press on, ALWAYS check the machine for the correct setting and
speed, as well as ensuring the Chuck Key is removed.
1. FOR YOUR OWN SAFETY, READ THE MANUAL BEFORE
OPERATING THE TOOL. Learn the machine’s application
and limitations, plus the specific hazards particular to it.
2. ALWAYS USE A FULL-FACE SHIELD-Strongly
recommended (must be ANSI approved) Everyday
eyeglasses usually are only impact resistant and safety
glasses only protect eyes. A full-face shield will protect
the eyes and face. Also use face or dust mask if cutting
operation is dusty.
3. WEAR PROPER APPAREL. Do not wear loose clothing,
gloves, neckties, rings, bracelets or other jewelry which
may get caught in moving parts. Non-slip footwear is
recommended. Wear protective hair covering to
contain long hair.
4. USE EAR PROTECTORS. Use ear muffs for extended
period of operation. Use muffs rated to 103 DBA LEQ (8
hour).
5. DON’T USE IN DANGEROUS ENVIRONMENT. Don’t use
power tools in damp or wet locations, or expose them
to rain. Keep work area well lighted. The NOVA Down
feed attachment is intended for indoor use only. Failure
to do so may void the warranty.
14. KEEP GUARDS IN PLACE and in working order.
15. USE CORRECT TOOLS. Do not use a tool or attachment to
do a job for which it was not designed.
16. USE RECOMMENDED ACCESSORIES. The use of improper
accessories may cause hazards.
17. DON’T FORCE THE TOOL. It will do the job better and be
safer at the rate for which it was designed.
18. MAINTAIN TOOLS IN TOP CONDITION. Keep tools sharp
and clean for best and safest performance. Follow
instructions for lubricating and changing accessories.
19. NEVER STAND ON TOOL. Serious injury could occur if the
tool is tipped or if the cutting tool is accidentally
contacted.
20. REMOVE ADJUSTING KEYS AND WRENCHES. Form a habit
of checking to see that keys and adjusting wrenches are
removed from tool before turning it on.
21. DON’T OVERREACH. Keep proper footing and balance at
all times.
22. DIRECTION OF FEED. Feed work into a blade or cutter
against the direction of rotation of the blade or cutter
only.
23. PAY ATTENTION TO WORK. Concentrate on your work. If
you become tired or frustrated, leave it for a while and
rest.
24. SECURE WORK. Use clamps or a vice to hold work when
practical. Severe injury or death can occur if an object
comes free as it can become a dangerous projectile.
25. CHECK DAMAGED PARTS. Before further use of the tool,
any part that is damaged should be carefully checked to
ensure that it will operate properly and perform its
intended function. Check for alignment of moving parts,
binding of moving parts, mounting, and any other
conditions that may affect its operation. Any damaged

means for proper dust removal. Use wood dust collection
systems whenever possible.
28. DO NOT MODIFY OR USE DRILL PRESS FOR USES OTHER
THAN FOR WHICH IT WAS DESIGNED.
6. KEEP WORK AREA CLEAN. Cluttered areas and benches
invite accidents. Build-up of sawdust is a fire hazard.
7. KEEP CHILDREN AND VISITORS AWAY. The Nova Viking
DVR is not recommended for children and infirm
persons. Such personnel and onlookers should be kept
a safe distance from work area.
8. MAKE WORKSHOP CHILDPROOF with locks, master
switches, or by removing starter keys.
9. GROUND ALL TOOLS. If the tool is equipped with a
three-prong plug, it should be plugged into a three-hole
electrical receptacle. If an adapter is used to
accommodate a two-prong receptacle, the adapter plug
must be attached to a known ground. Never remove
the third prong.
10. MAKE SURE TOOL IS DISCONNECTED FROM POWER
SUPPLY while the motor is being mounted, connected,
or reconnected.
11. DISCONNECT TOOLS FROM WALL SOCKET before
servicing and when changing accessories such as bits,
cutters and fuses etc.
12. AVOID ACCIDENTAL STARTING. Make sure switch is in
the “Off”position before plugging in power cord.

NOVA DOWN FEED ATTACHMENT FEATURES AT A GLANCE
The NOVA down feed attachment is specifically made for the NOVA Vulcan and Voyager drill presses. This attachment allows the users
to have precise control over their spindle which will be beneficial if you are either a wood worker or a metal worker.
Hand wheel Features
Precise control mode of the quill is enabled when the worm gears are engaged on the down feed attachment.
When precise control mode is enabled, the quill extension is controlled by the front handwheel.
Keeping Quill Extension lengths
When precise control is enabled the quill will not retract automatically therefore keeping its extension length.
This makes the machine suitable for milling operations.

ASSEMBLING YOUR DOWNFEED ATTACHMENT
Attachment procedures are the same in both NOVA Vulcan and NOVA Voyager drill press.
Step No.
Description
Image
1.
Lock the spindle into place by using the quill lock feature
on the headstock.
Pull the handle lightly to check if the quill is firmly held in
place.
2.
Use the supplied tool to hold the spring cover as shown in
the image. Match the slot of the supplied tool with the
quill spring to hold its position. Apply pressure towards
the headstock casting as well.
Carefully loosen the 2 locking nuts to a point where it can
easily be turned by hand. (but do not remove yet)
Using a Philips screw driver, loosen the screw on the
bottom side
Warning:
Always be very cautious when dealing with this spring as
it is able to store a lot of energy in it, which could cause
potential safety hazards if it is not treated with respect.
Caution! Before commencing any of the procedures shown below, make sure to take off any tools,
chucks and accessories that is mounted on the spindle area. The power source must be unplugged from the
machine.

3.
While firmly holding the tool, remove the 2 locking nuts
by hand.
Carefully slide the spring cover and spring (along with the
supplied tool) away from the headstock casting.
Caution:
By sliding the spring out from its position, it will try to
uncoil itself therefore the tool must be held firmly by
hand to prevent the spring uncoiling in an uncontrolled
manner.
When you feel the spring uncoiling itself, slowly turn the
tool towards that direction until the spring uncoils itself
completely.
When the spring is completely uncoiled, it is safe to
simply slide the spring away from the headstock casting.
4.
Once the spring is removed, the handle assembly can be
removed by pulling it out from the headstock casting.
Note:
It would be a good idea to put the drill press table right up
to the spindle to eliminate any risks of the spindle falling
straight out from the headstock casting.
5.
On the NOVA Vulcan and compatible models of the NOVA
Voyager, a mounting hole is located inside the part where
the original handle was inserted.
Take the positioning pin included in this package and
insert it into the top location hole. You may require a tool
such as a centre punch to punch the positioning pins into
place.
Note:
The bottom location hole should be used when the top
location hole is not available for any reason.

6.
Remove the down feed shaft from the housing and
position the housing on the headstock casting and secure
it in place by the screws included.
There should be no gaps in between the touching
surfaces.
Recommended to use
the top location hole.
Only use the bottom
when top location hole
is not available

7.
Attach the down feed handle to the housing and secure it
by using the grub screw. Remember to insert the small
key into the shaft slot before sliding the handle onto the
shaft.
Then slide the down feed shaft into the housing.
Note:
The shaft might be difficult to slide in because of the
worm gear inside. To slide the shaft in, try slowly rotating
the handle clockwise while wriggling the shaft.
Do not force the shaft into the housing as it may cause
damage to the internal gears.
8.
Attach the spring back onto the shaft.
Insert the centre of the spring into the slot machined on
the shaft. Place the cover over the top of the spring, make
sure to have the tongue slotted into the cover slot.
Using the included tool, turn the spring approximately 3/4
turn and push it into the screw located on the bottom.
While holding the tool and spring firmly, screw on the 2
locking nuts until finger tight. Carefully remove the tool
from the spring and spring cover, making sure that the
spring does not uncoil.

123-1018-001
11
Using a spanner, slightly tighten the locking nuts.
Note:
Do not over tighten the locking nuts as it will make the
handle very difficult to turn.
9.
Finally, unscrew the handle from the original assembly to
screw into the new down feed attachment.
Note:
This down feed attachment is semi-permanent. It is not suited to be attached and detached on frequent basis.

USING THE NOVA DOWNFEED ATTACHMENT
Figure 1 –Down feed attachment on the headstock
The Nova down feed attachment can be used in 2 different ways; precise control of the quill and quick movement of the quill.
The modes can be selected by turning the feed adjustment knob. Precision control mode is engaged by turning the feed adjustment
knob in the clockwise direction until it locks in firmly. To use the handles normally, the feed adjustment knob must be loosened.
Precision Quill Control
The precision control allows the user to have precise control over the quill extension by moving the quill for a very small amount.
This precision control function is ideal for NOVA Vulcan drill press which is capable of handling milling task. When the precision
control mode is engaged, the quill will automatically be locked in place at any position until the user turns the hand wheel to raise or
lower the quill.
When the precision control mode is engaged, the quill is extended by rotating the handwheel in the clockwise direction.
Quill feed 2.5mm (1/10”) control per revolution on hand wheel. (When gears fully engaged)
Quill feed 0.025mm (1/1000”) control per division on the hand wheel. (When gears fully engaged)
Normal Quill Control
The down feed attachment also allows the user to keep on using their Voyager/ Vulcan drill press as normal drill presses by
disengaging the precision quill control.
Note:
If the down feed attachment binds at any point during its use, do not force the handle as it will potentially cause damage to the gear
teeth. If the down feed attachment binds, try turning the handwheel/ handle in the opposite direction or gently wiggle it. It is
advised to disassemble and clean out any external debris or fragments once it binds during use.
