a. Keep your work area clean and well lit. Cluttered benches and dark areas invite accidents.
b. Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases
or dust. Power tools create sparks which may ignite the dust or fumes.
c. Keep bystanders, children and visitors away while operating a power tool. Distractions can cause you to lose
a. Double insulated tools are equipped with a polarized plug (one blade is wider than the other). This plug will
fit in a polarized outlet only one way. If the plug does not fit fully in the outlet, reverse the plug. If it still does
not fit, contact a qualified electrician to install a polarized outlet.
b. Avoid body contact with grounded surfaces, such as pipes, radiators, ranges and refrigerators. There is an

OPERATING PROCEDURES
USING YOUR DRILL
WARNING!
n
Be sure to wear the appropriate protective equipment. For your safety, re-
move all chips, small pieces, etc. from the table top before operation.
n
Always hold the tool away from your face. Accessories can be damaged dur-
ing handling and can come apart as they go up to speed. This is not com-
mon, but it does happen.
n
Do not cover the air vents with your hand. Blocking the air vents could cause
the motor to overheat. To avoid injury from unexpected starting or electrical
shock, always remove the plug from the wall outlet when the tool is not in use.
use.
n
Always be sure that the tool switch
is
off and unplugged before adjusting or
checking on the tool.
n
If any parts are missing, do not operate the tool until the missing parts are
replaced. Failure to do so could result in possible serious personal injury
.
1. To start the tool, simply pull the trigger switch. Release the trigger switch to
stop.
2. For continuous operation, pull the trigger switch and then push in the lock on
button.
3. To stop the tool from the locked position, pull the trigger switch fully, then
release it.
SWITCH ACTION
WARNING!
n
Before plugging in the tool, always check to see that the
trigger
switch
moves properly and returns to the “OFF” position when released.
n
Switch can be locked in the “ON” position for the ease of the operator comfort
during extended use. Apply caution when locking the tool in the “ON” position
and maintain a firm grasp on the tool.
The forward / reverse switch lever determines the direction of the rotation of the
drill. It is used for withdrawing the bits from tight holes and removing screws.
1. Push the forward / reverse level switch to the position (left side of the drill) for
clockwise rotation. (forward)
2. Push the forward / reverse switch lever to the position (right side of the drill)
for counterclockwise rotation. (reverse)
ROTATION DIRECTION
WARNING!
n
Always check the direction of the rotation before operation.
n
Use the forward / reverse level switch only after the tool comes to a com-
plete stop. Changing the direction of the rotation before the tool stops may
damage the tool.
5

CAUTION!
Avoid running your drill at low speeds for extended periods of time.
Running at low speeds under constant usage may cause your drill to become
overheated. If this occurs, cool your drill by running it without a load at full
speed.

Variable speed dial
6
This drill is equipped with a variable speed dial to allow the operator to control
the speed and torque limits. To increase the speed, turn the variable speed dial
to the “+” direction. To decrease the speed, turn the variable speed dial to the “-“
direction.
Use lower speeds for starting holes without a center punch, drilling into metal
or plastics, or drilling into ceramics, or in applications requiring a higher torque.
Higher speeds are better for drilling wood, wood compositions, soft metal and for
abrasive and polishing accessories.
OPERATING PROCEDURES
CAUTION!
■
Always unplug the drill when attaching or changing bits or accessories.
■
Use sharp drill bits only. For wood, use twist drill bits, spade bits, or hole
saws. For metal, use high speed steel twist bits or hole saws.
■
Always apply pressure in a straight line with the bit. Use enough pressure to
keep drilling. Excessive pressure on the tool will not speed up the drilling. In
fact, it will only damage the tip of your bit, decrease the tool performance
and shorten the service life of the tool.
■
There is a tremendous twisting force exerted on the tool/bit at the time of
hole breakthrough. Hold the tool firmly and exert care when the bit begins to
break through the workpiece..
■
Always secure small workpieces in a vise or similar holddown devices.
■
Avoid drilling in material that you suspect contains hidden nails or other
things that may cause the bit to bind or break.
■
Overloading and improper use may cause the drill to stall. If the drill stalls,
release the trigger immediately and remove the drill bit from the workpiece,
and determine the cause of stalling. Do not click the trigger off and on in an
attempt to start the drill – this can damage the drill.
■
To minimize the stalling or breaking through the material, reduce the pres-
sure on the drill and ease the bit through the last fractional part of the hole.
■
A stuck bit can be removed simply by setting the reversing switch to reverse
rotation in order to back out. However the tool may back out abruptly if you
do not hold it firmly.
VARIABLE SPEED
DRILL OPERATION
■

7
1. When drilling in wood, the best results are obtained with a screw guide. The
screw guide makes drilling easier by pulling the bit into the workpiece.
2. Holes in the wood can be made with the same twist drill bits used for metal.
These bits may overheat unless pulled out frequently to clear the chips from
the fl utes. However, do not use the twist drill bits meant for wood when drill-
ing in metal.
3. For large holes, use the low speed wood bits.
4. Use a “back-up” block of wood for work that can splinter, such as thin materi-
als.
OPERATING PROCEDURES
DRILLING IN WOOD
5. You will drill a cleaner hole if you ease up on the pressure just before the bit
breaks through the wood. Then complete the hole from the back side.
1. There are two rules for drilling hard materials. First, the harder the material,
the greater the pressure you need to apply to the tool. Second, the harder the
material, the slower the speed.
2. Lubricate the tip of the bit occasionally with cutting oil except when drilling
soft metal such as aluminum, copper or cast iron.
3. To prevent the bit from slipping when starting a hole, make an indentation
with a center-punch and hammer at the point to be drilled. Place the point of
the bit in the indentation and start drilling.
WARNING!
Do not attempt to make any adjustments while the tool is in opera-
tion. Disconnecting the tool from the power source will prevent accidental start-
ing which can cause serious injury.
CAUTION!
Use only the accessories that are recommended by the manufactur-
er for your model. Accessories that may be suitable for one tool may be hazard-
ous when used on another tool.
DRILLING IN METAL
MAINTENANCE
1. Clean out any accumulated dust. Ventilated openings and switch levers must
be kept clean and free of foreign matter. Do not attempt to clean by inserting
pointed objects into openings.
2. Avoid using solvents when cleaning plastic parts. Most plastics are suscep-
tible to damage from commercial solvents and may be damaged by their use.
Use clean cloths to remove dirt, carbon dust, etc.
3. Do not allow petroleum based products to come into contact with the plastic
parts as they contain chemicals that can damage, weaken or destroy plastic.
4. Only a qualifi ed service professional should repair the tool.
