12707 Resistivity Chamber for Liquid Sample Operation Manual
1.1 Product Overview
1. Introduction
1.1 Product Overview
The 12707 is a sample box to measure the volume resistivity of a liquid sample such as liquid
crystal, consisting of a shield box and electrodes.
It is used together with a digital ultra-high resistance/micro current meter such as 8340A or an
electrometer such as 8252 or 8240.
Features:
zIt requires only 0.8 cc of sample for measurement.
zThe guard electrode offers precise volume resistivity measurement.
zThe electrodes are easy to be disassembled and cleaned.
zThe following functions are included for safety operation:
1. Voltage applied to the electrodes is shut off by opening the cover.
2. A contact signal according to opening and closing of the cover controls the measur-
ing instrument.

1.2 Before Using the Product
1.2.2 Precautions for Transportation and Measurement
(1) Precaution for transportation
The internal electrode is not fixed to the shield box. Do not tilt the 12707, otherwise the
internal electrode may fall.
(2) Precaution for measurement
If measurement is performed with the 12707 tilted, a sample will overflow or the internal
electrode will not be fully soaked. Consequently, normal measurement values cannot be
obtained.
Perform measurement on a flat horizontal workbench.
1.2.3 Preparations of a Measuring Instrument and Cables/Adapter
The following table shows connectable instruments and necessary cables/adapter.

2.2 Part Descriptions
zSee Figure 2-1.
(1) LID SIGNAL connector
A connector to output a cover open/close signal to the measuring instrument. When the
cover is closed, the terminals are short-circuited. When it is opened, the terminals are
open-circuited.
(2) INPUT connector
A connector to connect with a measuring instrument having a triaxial connector on the
INPUT such as the 8340A, 8252 or 8240. The center contact is connected to the MEAS-
URE terminal (5) on the top panel. The inner shield is connected to the GUARD terminal
(6) on the top panel.
(3) V SOURCE terminal
A terminal to connect with an application voltage source such as the 8340A or 8252. The
HI is connected to the V SOURCE terminal (7) on the top panel.
The maximum voltage of the 12707 is 45 V.
Be sure to operate the 12707 at or below the maximum voltage.

zSee Figure 2-2.
(4) Electrode insertion opening
The electrode is inserted into this opening. The projections in the inside are aligned with
the holes on the bottom of the electrode.
(5) MEASURE terminal
A terminal for measurement that connects with the M terminal (12) by using the supplied
cable (DCB-PP1801X01).
The insulation degradation of the MEASURE terminal has an influence directly on
measured values, causing measurement errors. If the terminal area gets dirty, clean it
with a swab soaked in absolute alcohol.
(6) GUARD terminal
A terminal to measure precisely the volume resistivity that connects with the G terminal
(13) by using the supplied cable (DCB-PP1801X01).
(7) V SOURCE terminal
A terminal to apply voltage that connects with the V terminal (17) by using the supplied
cable (DCB-PP1801X01).
(8) LID SIGNAL switch
Turns on when the cover is closed.

(10) Ring electrode
A container to put a measurement sample in. Voltage is applied to this electrode.
(11) Internal electrode
This electrode is used in the ring electrode. It contains the main electrode and the guard
electrodes.
(12) Main electrode
An electrode for measurement. It is connected with the M terminal (15).
(13) Guard electrode A
This electrode cancels current that flows around from the top of the main electrode. Con-
nects with the G terminal (16).
(14) Guard electrode B
This electrode cancels current that flows around from the bottom of the main electrode.
Connects with the G terminal (16).
(15) M terminal
It is connected with the main electrode (12) for measurement. Connects with the MEAS-
URE terminal (5) by using the supplied cable (DCB-PP1801X01).
(16) G terminal
It is connected with the guard electrode A (13) and the guard electrode B (14). Connects
with the GUARD terminal (6) by using the supplied cable (DCB-PP1801X01).
(17) V terminal
A terminal of the ring electrode to apply voltage. Connects with the V SOURCE terminal
(7) by using the supplied cable (DCB-PP1801X01).

3.1 Cleaning the Electrodes
To perform precise measurement, clean the electrodes before and after measurement.
In insulation resistance measurement, dirt on the electrodes or sample residue may
cause measurement errors.
3.1.1 Cleaning the Internal Electrode
zSee Figure 3-1.
Procedure:
1. Remove the M terminal (4), the G terminal (5) and the flat head screw M3X20 (6), and
disassemble the internal electrode.
2. Clean the disassembled parts with the sample liquid, then ultrasonic-clean them with ab-
solute alcohol.
3. Clean the insulating materials (7) to (10) to remove the sample residue completely.
After cleaning, do not touch them with empty hands.
