1 WELCOME
1.1 INTRODUCTION
Thank you for choos ng AES-3502UE storage appl ance. It s a low-cost, s ngle-ch p solut on for d g tal home

1.5 STORAGE POLICIES
You can conf gure the AES-3502UE Storage to use any of the follow ng Storage Pol c es to map the
appl ance’s phys cal hard dr ves to v rtual dr ves that are v s ble to the host computer. The v rtual dr ves are called
volumes.
The host operat ng system treats each volume as f t were a s ngle phys cal dr ve. Th s v rtual zat on allows you to
overcome restr ct ons that are mposed by phys cal hard dr ves, such as speed, storage capac ty or data storage
rel ab l ty.
1.5.1 STANDARD (INDIVIDUAL)
The STANDARD (Ind v dual) storage pol cy enables each hard dr ve to be seen separately as one dr ve. When
us ng a SATA host controller, STANDARD should only be used f the SATA host controller prov des Port Mult pl er
(PM) support. If a host s not PM-aware, only a s ngle dr ve s presented (dr ve 0). No such l m tat on f us ng a
USB host connect on.
STANDARD storage pol cy s ava lable for a standalone (non-cascaded) Storage or the top-level node of a
cascaded conf gurat on, but not for subord nate nodes. Even though you can use the DIP sw tch to select
STANDARD mode for any node n a cascaded conf gurat on, only the f rst STANDARD volume of any subord nate

node s detected by your host. Therefore, select ng STANDARD mode for any subord nate node s not
recommended.
In a STANDARD conf gurat on, the AES-3502UE Storage d rectly exposes each phys cal dr ve.
1.5.2 COM INE ( IG)
The COMBINE (BIG) storage pol cy concatenates a ser es of phys cal hard dr ves as a s ngle large volume;
result ng n a seamless expans on of v rtual volumes beyond the phys cal l m tat ons of s ngularly connected hard
dr ves. AES-3502UE COMBINE storage pol cy del vers max mum storage space w thout a s ngle large capac ty
and costly hard dr ve.
Any node w th n a cascaded conf gurat on can be set to COMBINE.
Hard dr ve A and B are concatenated nto a s ngle v rtual volume n the F gure below w th a storage capac ty that
s equal to the sum of each of the phys cal hard dr ves A and B.
It s also poss ble to create a COMBINE volume us ng only a s ngle hard d sk dr ve connected to Port 0, and then
ncrease the storage capac ty of the volume later by add ng another hard d sk dr ve (or another AES-3502UE
Storage w th at least one hard d sk dr ve) to Port 1 and press ng the Mode Change push-button. The new d sk
blocks of Port 1 w ll be concatenated to the end of the d sk blocks of Port 0, and any data that s stored on the
ex st ng COMBINE volume w ll be preserved. However, t s not poss ble to expand an ex st ng COMBINE volume
by add ng another hard d sk dr ve to Port 0 and st ll preserve any ex st ng data on that volume.

1.5.3 STRIPING (FAST)
The STRIPING storage pol cy d str butes access across all hard d sks, also called
FAST (equ valent to RAID 0).
STRIPING presents the best data speed but no data redundancy. STRIPING storage pol cy accelerates hard d sk
operat ng speed by us ng many d sks n parallel. Hard dr ve data segments are wr tten to d fferent d sks
s multaneously wh ch ncreases performance wh le sacr f c ng data redundancy.
To mplement the STRIPING storage pol cy, the AES-3502UE Storage creates a s ngle v rtual volume that s
striped across both hard dr ves, w th a storage capac ty that s equal to the sum of both hard d sk dr ves.
It s poss ble to set any node w th n a cascaded conf gurat on to STRIPING, although there s no performance
benef t when us ng mult ple layers of str p ng.
1.5.4 MIRRORING (SAFE)
The MIRRORING storage pol cy stores all data n dupl cate on separate dr ves to protect aga nst data loss due to
dr ve fa lure. One dr ve mirrors the other at all t mes, equ valent to RAID 1. Every wr te operat on goes to both
dr ves. MIRRORING prov des the h ghest level of data protect on for cr t cal data that you cannot afford to lose f a
hard dr ve fa ls, but halves the amount of storage capac ty because all data must be stored tw ce. The result ng
storage capac ty of the v rtual MIRRORING volume w ll be equ valent to the s ze of one hard dr ve ( f both dr ves
are the same) or the smaller of the two dr ves ( f they are d fferent).
If one dr ve fa ls, the MIRRORING volume s st ll usable, but t s n a vulnerable state because ts m rrored hard
dr ve s naccess ble. When the offl ne dr ve comes back onl ne, the appl ance beg ns a rebu ld process
mmed ately to restore data redundancy. A message appears n the LED nd cator to not fy you that a rebu ld s n
progress.
Although the volume rema ns ava lable dur ng the rebu ld process, the volume s suscept ble to data loss through
damage to the rema n ng dr ve unt l redundancy s restored at the end of the rebu ld and ver f cat on process. Host
access takes precedence over the rebu ld process. If you cont nue to use the MIRRORING volume dur ng the rebu ld,
the rebu ld process w ll take a longer t me to complete, and the host data transfer performance w ll also
be affected.
Any node w th n a cascaded conf gurat on can be set to MIRRORING, but t s more eff c ent to use the
MIRRORING pol cy at the lowest poss ble level w th n the h erarchy.
It s also poss ble to create a MIRRORING volume us ng one hard d sk dr ve connected to Port 0 of the TEAR

BANC, although no m rror ng w ll occur unt l a second hard d sk dr ve s connected to Port 1. W th only one hard
d sk dr ve connected, the MIRRORING volume w ll be ava lable, although no data protect on w ll be prov ded unt l
a second hard d sk dr ve s connected.
