How Your Acclaim Operates
Sometimes called an overlock machine or overlocker, the serger is different from any conventional
s ew ing m ac h ine you h av e us ed . A w arenes s of it s s im ple operat ion w ill enab le you t o b ec om e m ore
procient in its use. Please read all instructions before using your new machine.
Serging is kind of a knitting process that loops two, three or four threads together to create a stitch.
Your Baby Lock Acclaim operates with one or two needles and one or two «loopers , »eac h
c arrying a t h read t o f orm t h e ov erloc k s t it c h .
When fabric is placed into the machine, it reaches the feed dogs rst. The feed dogs move the
fabric along as the cutting blades trim the edge, creating a clean edge to be nished. Then the
loopers and need le( s ) f orm t h e s t it c h on t h e f ab ric ed g e, s upport ed b y one or m ore parallel
«stitch ngers» - metal prongs that keep the fabric at. The threads become «locked» over the
f ab ric and t h e res ult ing s t it c h es enc as e t h e raw ed g e w it h t h read t o prev ent f ab ric rav eling .
After setting up your machine for the rst time, take a few moments to learn how it sews. Before
your s erg er is t h read ed , t urn t h e h and w h eel c ount erc loc k w is e and w at c h t h e m ov em ent and
operation of the various parts. Don’t bother with fabric at rst. It doesn’t hurt your serger to stitch
w it h out f ab ric und er t h e pres s er f oot .

Needles
Thread
Optional Accessories
All types of thread may be used on your Baby Lock, but 100% long-staple polyester thread,cross-
w ound on a c one, c ons is t ent ly prov id es t h e b es t s t it c h perf orm anc e.
Because the threads must pass through several thread guides at high speeds, they must be of uniform
t h ic k nes s and h ig h s t reng t h w it h a m inim um am ount of lint ing .
Good-quality cotton or cotton-covered polyester threads sew well, though they produce more lint,cre-
ating the need to clean the machine more frequently.
T h ey w ork w ell f or ov ered g ing and s eam ing , b ut t h ey m ay b e t oo w eak or t oo f uz z y f or t h e rolled ed g e.
Poor grades of these threads can result in frequent fraying, breaking and unbalanced stitches.
Threads of other ber contents and weights may be used, depending on their strength and thickness.

Important Note: For maximum performance of the Baby Lock Acclaim, it is recommended to use“100%
polyester-long ber thread”.

Your Baby Lock Acclaim serger is set up with 90/14 machine needles, which are suitable for most
medium and heavy weight fabrics. For lightweight fabrics, change to a size 75/11 needle.
The needle’s semi-ball point design is suitable for knits and wovens. Some manufacturers’ needles
may produce better quality stitches with your Baby Lock than others. For best results, use Organ or
Schmetz brand needles - system HAx1SP/CR, and replace them approximately every third
project (page 54).

Setting Up Your Acclaim
1. Remove machine from box
After removing the packing materials from the box, gently lift your Baby Lock serger by grasping the

2. Plug in the machine
Plug the power cord into the machine  rst, then into a wall outlet. The power switch is located toward
the back on the right side of the machine. Always make sure the power is OFF when the machine is
not in use. Available foot control for 110-120V area : YC-482.
for 220-240V area : Model YC-483N-1 or YC-483N or YC-168S.

3. Polarized plug
T h is applianc e h as a polariz ed plug ( one b lad e w id er t h an t h e ot h er) . T o red uc e t h e ris k of elec t ric
shock, this plug is intended to  t in a polarized outlet only one way. ( g. A) If the plug does not  t fully
in the outlet, reverse the plug. If it still does not  t, contact a quali ed electrician to install the proper

4. Foot controller

6. Opening front cover
The front cover may be opened simply by placing your  ngers behind the cover at the upper right
side and gently pull toward you. ( g. D)

Bring the chain of thread up and from the back to front through the
t h read c ut t er.
T h e pres s er f oot pres s ure h as b een pres et at t h e f ac t ory and rarely
needs adjustment. You may  nd it necessary, however, to decrease the
pres s ure f or t h ic k f ab ric s or inc reas e pres s ure f or t h in f ab ric s t o f eed
more smoothly under the foot. Turn the presser foot pressure adjust-
m ent d ial on lef t s id e of t h e m ac h ine.
To increase pressure, turn the pressure adjusting dial counterclockwise.

5. Slide presser foot slightly toward you and carefully turn the

6. Slide the presser foot to the rear to remove.

Stitch Width
The stitch length / rolled hem adjusting dial is conveniently
located just to the left of the front cover, near the base plate.
(g. A) The dial shows two stitch-length ranges, from 0.75, for

narrow s eam ing .
Simply turn the dial aligning the desired setting with the indica-
t or on t h e m ac h ine. A s t it c h leng t h of 3 m m , or ab out 1 0 s t it c h es

For overedging or seaming very lightweight fabrics, you may
pref er a s h ort er s t it c h leng t h . W h en s ew ing h eav ier f ab ric s , you
may choose to lengthen the stitch. (g. B)

Adjusting the stitch width moves the upper cutting blade.
It also moves the stitch ngers further apart or closer together
f or c om plet e f ab ric s upport w it h any s t it c h w id t h .

Differential Feed
Your Baby Lock serger is equipped with differential feed.
T h e s et of f eed d og s w ork ind epend ent ly in ord er t o ens ure

When the differential feed adjusting lever, located at thema-
chine’s right, front edge is set on “N” for normal feeding,
t h e f eed d og s m ov e t h e s am e d is t anc e.

The Baby Lock Acclaim revolutionizes the way a serger works with its Thread Delivery System.
You no longer have to manually adjust the tension settings for the type of stitch you are serging.
Select the type of stitch you wish to serge, the Acclaim will automatically feed the correct amount of

stitch selector lever to A, B, C, or D.
A - For Wide overlock stitches using the left (L) needle.
B - For balanced overlock stitches using the right (R) needle and 3-thread
W av e s t it c h .
C - For narrow stitches with a short length and Rolled Wave stitch.
D - For 3-Thread rolled hem stitch.
For best results, use setting B or C for WAVE stitching. See chart on last page for stitch selection settings.
The Wave/Overlock Selector lever shows “OVERLOCK” and “WAVE”.
Select “OVERLOCK” for overlock stitching. Select “WAVE” for wave
s t it c h ing .
No adjustments are needed when sewing with most fabrics and
threads on your Baby Lock Acclaim, but certain threads or fabrics
may require minor ne-tuning of the looper delivery system to perfect
your s t it c h es .

tension thread guide “2” at the top of the machine, then through the slot on the front of the machine.
