GENERAL OPERATION
•Readthis operator'smanualcarefullyin its entiretybeforeattempting
toassemblethismachine.Read,understand,andfollowallinstructions
onthe machineandinthe manual(s)beforeoperation.Becompletely
familiarwiththe controlsand the properuseofthis machinebefore
operatingit. Keepthis manualin a safeplaceforfutureandregular
referenceandfororderingreplacementparts.

,, Thebladecontrolhandleisa safetydevice.Neverattempttobypassits
operation.Doingso makesthe safetydeviceinoperativeand mayresult
in personalinjurythroughcontactwiththe rotatingblade.The blade
controlhandlemustoperateeasily in bothdirectionsand automatically
returntothedisengagedpositionwhen released.
,, Neveroperatethe mowerin wet grass.Alwaysbesureof yourfooting. A
slip andfall cancauseseriouspersonalinjury.If youfeelyouare losing
yourfooting,releasethe bladecontrolhandleimmediatelyandthe blade
will stoprotatingwithinthreeseconds.
,, Mowonlyin daylightorgoodartificiallight.Walk,neverrun.
,, Stopthe bladewhencrossinggraveldrives,walksor roads.

•Ifthe equipmentshouldstarttovibrateabnormally,stoptheengineand

trouble.

beforeremovingthegrasscatcheror uncloggingthe chute.
Thecuttingbladecontinuestorotatefor afewsecondsafterthe engine

aresurethe bladehasstoppedrotating.

SLOPE OPERATION
Slopesarea majorfactorrelatedto slipandfall accidentswhichcan resultin
severeinjury.Operationon slopesrequiresextracaution.Ifyoufeeluneasyon
aslope,donotmowit.Foryoursafety,usethe slopegaugeincludedaspart
ofthismanualtomeasureslopesbeforeoperatingthisunitona slopedor hilly
area.Ifthe slopeisgreaterthan15degrees,do notmowit.
Do:
•Mowacrossthe faceof slopes;neverupanddown.Exerciseextreme
cautionwhenchangingdirectiononslopes.
•Watchforholes,ruts,rocks,hiddenobjects,or bumpswhichcancause
youto slipor trip.Tallgrasscan hideobstacles.
•Alwaysbesureof yourfooting.A slipandfall cancauseseriouspersonal
injury.If youfeelyouare losingyourbalance,releasethe bladecontrol
handleimmediately,andthe bladewill stop rotatingwithin3seconds.
Do Not:
,, Donot mowneardrop-offs,ditchesor embankments,whereyoucould
loseyourfootingor balance.

1. Removeanypackingmaterialwhichmaybebetweenupperand
lowerhandles.
a. Pullupand backon upperhandleasshowninFigure1.
Makecertainthelowerhandleisseatedsecurelyintothe
handlemountingbrackets.Donotcrimpcableswhilelifting
thehandleup.
b. Tightenstar knobstosecureupperhandletolowerhandle.
Makesurethateachcarriageboltisseatedproperlyin the
handle.
2. Locatethehairpinclipontheweldpinon eachsideof lower
handle.
a. Removehairpinclipfromthis hole.Usinga pairofpliers,
inserthairpinclipintotheholeonpinclosesttothe bracket.

removefromunit.SeeFigure5.
2. Replacewithgrassbagadapter,whilemakingsurethefrontlipof
adaptergoesundertheedgeofthedeck.Securewithwingnuts

Cutting Height
Thecuttingheightadjustmentleverislocatedabovetherearleft

Thefrontwheelcuttingheightisdeterminedbyselectingoneof six
positionsoneachcasterassembly.Toadjustfrontcuttingheight,refer
toFigure7B andproceedasfollows:
1. Removewingnutfromaxlebolt.
Slideaxleboltandwavewasher
fromtheassemblyandselecta
cuttingheight.
2. Withwavewasheron axlebolt,
reinserthardwareinthesquare
holedesiredthroughwheel
assemblyandsecurewithwing
nutpreviouslyremoved.
IMPORTANT:Allwheelsmustbeplacedinthesamerelativeposition.
Forroughor unevenlawns,movetheheightadjustmentleverto a
higherposition.Thiswillstopscalpingofgrass.
Thecasterscanbe lockedina straightaheadpositionorpositionto
swivelfreely.SeeFigure7Cinsert.

Drive Control
Theadjustmentwheelislocatedin thedrivecontrolhandlehousing
andis usedtotightenor loosenthedrivebelt.Youwillhaveto adjust
thedrivecontrolifanyofthefollowinghappens:
1. Themowerdoesnotpropelitselfwiththedrivecontrolengaged.
2. Themower'sdrivewheelshesitatewiththedrivecontrolengaged.
If eitherof theseconditionsoccur,rotatetheadjustmentwheel
clockwisetotightenandcounter-clockwiseto loosencabletoadjust
thedrivecontrol.SeeFigure8.
NOTE:Forsomepeoplethedrivecontrolmaynotbe ina comfortable
position.Youcanadjustthehandlebytighteningtheadjustmentwheel.

panel.It isusedonlyfortheelectricstarter.

Yourmowerisshippedasa mulcher.Todischargethegrassclippings
tothesideinstead,followtheinstructionsintheAssemblysectionto
attachthesidedischargechute.
CUTTING HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT

Thecuttingheightadjustmentleverislocatedabovethe
left rearwheel.Toadjustthecuttingheight,refertothe

DRIVE CONTROL
Thedrivecontrolislocatedontheupperhandle.Squeezethedrive
controltoengagethedrivesystem.Releaseittodisengagethedrive
system.
SHIFT LEVER
Theshiftleverislocatedon thedrivecontrolhousingontheupper
handle.Thisleverisusedto selecttheforwardspeedofthemower.
Whenchangingspeedselection,releasethedrivecontrol.
IMPORTANT:Movetheshiftleveronlywhentheengineisrunning.
Changingtheshiftleversettingwiththeengineoff candamagethe
mower.
Keephandsandfeetawayfromthechuteareaoncuttingdeck.Refer
towarninglabelontheunit.
RECOIL STARTER
Therecoilstarterisconnectedto thesupportrodandislocatedon the
rightsideofthelowerhandle.Standbehindtheunitandpulltherecoil
starterropetostarttheunit.
GAS CAP
Removethegascaptoaddfueltothefueltank.Useclean,fresh,
regularunleadedgasolinewitha minimumof87 octane.
SPARK PLUG
Referto theMaintenancesectionforinstructionsonsparkplug
replacement.
OIL CAP/DIPSTICK
Referto theMaintenancesectionforinstructionsoncheckingtheoil.

FirstTimeUse
1. Removeoil filldipstick.
2. Withthelawnmoweron levelground,useafunneltoemptyentire
contentsofoil bottleprovidedintotheengine.
3. Replaceoil filldipstickandtighten.
Subsequent Uses
Onlyusehighqualitydetergentoil ratedwithAPIserviceclassification
SE SG,SH,or SJ.Selecttheoil's SAEviscositygradeaccordingto
theexpectedoperatingtemperature.Followthechartbelow.

Oil Viscosity Chart
Althoughmulti-viscosityoils(5W20,10W30,etc.)improvestarting
incoldweather,theywillresultinincreasedoil consumptionwhen
usedabove32°R Checkyourengineoil levelmorefrequentlytoavoid
possibleenginedamagefromrunninglowon oil.SeeFigure9.
1. Checktheoil levelbeforeeachoperationmakingcertainnot
torubthedipstickalongtheinsidewallsoftheoilfilltubeand
withoutscrewingit in.Thiswouldresultina falsedipstick
reading.Refillto FULLmarkon dipstick,ifnecessary.Capacity
isapproximately18oz.Overfillingwillcausetheenginetosmoke
profuselyandwill resultin poorengineperformance.

injurytotheoperatorandothers.
1. Oncetheengineisrunning,squeezethedrivecontrolagainstthe
upperhandletopropelmower.Releaseittodisengagethedrive.
2. Usetheshift levertoselecttheforwardspeedof themower- 1
istheslowestspeed,6 isthefastest.Whenchangingspeed
selection,releasethedrivecontrol.
IMPORTANT:Movetheshiftleveronlywhentheengineisrunning.

USING GRASS CATCHER
Youcanusethegrasscatcherbagtocollectclippingswhileyouare
operatingthemower.
1. AttachgrasscatcherfollowinginstructionsintheAssembly
section.Grassclippingswillautomaticallycollectinthe bagas
yourun themower.
2. Operatethemowertill thegrassbagisfull.
3. Stopenginecompletelybyreleasingthebladecontrol.Makesure
thattheunithascometoa completestop.
4. Whileholdingthegrassbagbyboththerearhandleandthelower
handle,liftthegrassbagstraightupoff theadapter.Thechute
doorwillmovetheropeoutofthewayof thebag.
5. Continuingtoholdthelowerhandle,raisetherearofthegrass
bagandreleasethelowerhandleovera properreceptacle.The
grassbagwillopenandthegrassclippingswilldisperse.When
replacingthegrassbag,besurethetopofthebagrestsonthe
wiresupportbetweenthehandles.
