About This User s Guide
This user sguide provides instructions on howto install the DSL-562TADSL Router and use it to connect a
computer or Ethernet LAN to the Internet.
If you are using acomputer with afunctioning Ethernet port or an available USB port, the quickest and easiest
wayto set up the DSL-562T isto insert the Installation CD into the CD-ROM drive of your computer and follow
the instructions provided in the QuickInstallation Guide.Alternatively, youcan click the “Install DSL-562T”
link on the initial pop-up menu thatappears shortlyafter inserting the CD and followthe instructions as theyare
presented. If the menu fails toappear, explore the CD, find the file “dsl502t.exe”and double-clickit to launch
the installation software.
Before You Start
Please read and make sure youunderstand alltheprerequisites for proper installationof your newRouter. Have
all the necessary information and equipment on hand before beginning the installation.
Installation Overview
The procedure to install the Router can be described in general terms in the following steps:
1. Gather information and equipment needed to install the device. Before youbeginthe actual installation
make sure youhave all the necessaryinformation and equipment.
2. Installthe hardware, that is, connectthecables (Ethernetand telephone) to the device and connect the
power adapter.
3. Checkthe IPsettings on yourcomputer and change themifnecessaryso the computer can access the
web-based software built into the Router.
4. Use the web-based management software to configure the device to suit the requirements ofyour ADSL
account.
Installation Requirements
In order to establish aconnection to the Internet it will be necessaryto provide information to the Router that
will be stored in its memory. For someusers, onlytheiraccount information(Usernameand Password) is
required. For others, various parameters that control and define the Internet connectionwill be required. You can
print out the twopagesbelowand use the tables to list this information. This wayyouhave ahard copyof all the
informationneeded to setup the Router. If it is necessaryto reconfigure the device, all the necessaryinformation
can be easilyaccessed. Be sure to keep this information safeand private.
LowPass Filters
Since ADSLand telephone services share the samecopper wiring to carrytheir respective signals, afiltering
mechanismmaybe necessaryto avoid mutual interference.Alowpass filter device can be installed for each
telephone that shares the line with the ADSLline. These filters are easyto install passive devices that connect to
the ADSLdevice and/or telephone using standard telephone cable. Ask your service provider for more
information about the use of lowpass filters with your installation.
Operating Systems
The DSL-562Tuses anHTML-based web interfacefor setup and management. The webconfiguration manager
maybe accessed using anyoperating systemcapable of running web browser software, including Windows98
SE, Windows ME, Windows2000, and Windows XP.

DSL-562TDSL Router User sManual
viii
Web Browser
Anycommonweb browser can be used to configure the Router using the web configurationmanagement
software. The programisdesigned to work best withmore recentlyreleased browserssuch as Opera, Microsoft
Internet Explorer®version 5.0, Netscape Navigator®version 4.7, or later versions. The web browser must have
JavaScript enabled. JavaScript is enabled bydefaulton manybrowsers. Make sure JavaScript hasnot been
disabled byother software (such as virus protection or web user securitypackages) that maybe running on your
computer.
Ethernet Port (NIC Adapter)
Anycomputer that usesthe Router must be able to connectto it through the Ethernetport on the Router. This
connectionis an Ethernet connection and therefore requires that your computer be equipped withan Ethernet
port as well. Mostnotebook computers arenowsold with an Ethernetport already installed. Likewise, most fully
assembled desktop computers comewithanEthernetNIC adapter as standard equipment. If your computer does
not have anEthernetport, youmust install anEthernet NIC adapter before you canuse the Router. If youmust
install an adapter, followthe installation instructions that come with the Ethernet NIC adapter.
Additional Software
It maybe necessaryto install software on your computerthat enables the computer to access the Internet.
Additionalsoftware must be installed if youare using the device asimple bridge. For abridged connection, the
informationneeded to makeand maintain the Internetconnection isstored on another computer or gateway
device, not in the Router itself.
If your ADSLservice isdelivered through aPPPoE, PPPoAor CLIP(IPoA)connection, the information needed
to establish and maintainthe Internet connection canbe stored in the Router. Inthis case,it is not necessaryto
install software on your computer. It mayhowever be necessaryto change somesettings inthe device, including
account information used to identifyand verifythe connection.
Allconnections to the Internet require aunique global IP address. For bridged connections, the global IP settings
must reside in aTCP/IP enabled device on the LANside of the bridge, suchas aPC, aserver, agatewaydevice
suchas arouter or similar firewallhardware. The IP address can be assigned in anumber of ways. Your network
service provider will give you instructions about anyadditional connectionsoftware or NIC configuration that
maybe required.
About CLIP Connections (RFC 1577)
Classical IPover ATM(CLIP) connections mayrequire global IP settings for the device. Your service provider
will give youIPsettings informationif needed. SomeCLIPconnections functionlike peer-to-peer connections
and therefore do not require IPsettings on the WAN interface.

What is ADSL?
Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) is anaccess technology that utilizes ordinarycopper telephone
lines to enable broadband high-speed digital data transmissionand interactive multimedia applications for
business and residential customers.
ADSLgreatlyincreasesthe signal carrying capacityofcopper telephone lines without interfering with regular
telephone services. For the ADSLuser, this means fasterdownloads and more reliable connectivity. ADSL
devices make itpossible to enjoybenefits such as high-speed Internet access without experiencing any loss of
qualityor disruption of voice/fax telephone capabilities.
ADSLprovides adedicated service over asingle telephone line operating at speeds ofup to8Mbps downstream
and up to 640 Kbps upstream, depending on local telephoneline conditions. Asecure point-to-point connection
is established between the user and the central office of the service provider.
D-Link ADSL devices incorporate the recommendations of the ADSLForumregarding framing, data format,
and upper layer protocols.

versions lets the Router to communicate with all RIPenabled devices.
• Static Routing This allowsyouto select adata path to aparticular networkdestination that will remainin
the routing table and never “age out”.If you wish to define aspecific route that will always be used for data
traffic fromyour LANto aspecific destination within your LAN(for example to another router or aserver)
or outside your network (to a ISPdefined default gatewayfor instance).
• Default Routing This allowsyouto choose adefault path for incoming data packets for which the
destinationaddress is unknown. This isparticularlyuseful whenifthe Router functions asthesole
connection to the Internet.
• ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) The DSL-562Tsupports Bridged Ethernet over ATM (RFC1483),
IPover ATM (RFC1577) and PPPover ATM (RFC 2364).
• Precise ATM Traffic Shaping Traffic shaping is a method of controlling the flowrate of ATM data cells.
This function helps to establish the Qualityof Service for ATM data transfer.
• G.hs (Auto-handshake) This allowsthe Router to automaticallychoose either the G.liteor G.dmtADSL
connection standards.
• High Performance Veryhigh ratesof data transfer are possible with the Router. Up to eightMbps
downstreambit rate using the G.dmt.
