NOTE – This scenario is not the best for use with SMARTSHOXX. For SMARTSHOXX reactive starts, use scenario
5 below.
SCENARIO 5: REACTION TIME DETECTION/RFID READER (TRAFFIC LIGHT START)
In this scenario, SMARTSTART can be used as a wireless RFID reader, with the added ability to detect a reaction
time, in either single or multiple lane modes, by connecting a SMARTSHOXX unit to the PS2 input port on the
SMARTSTART unit. In multiple lane mode, one SMARTSTART is required for each lane, and is used to replace a
gate unit with SMARTSCAN reader (and SMARTSHOXX) attached.
NOTE- to use this protocol, you must use at least the 2 Gate Traffic Light Sprint protocol, as the SMARTSTART
actually acts as the first gate (split) in between the start signal and finish gate.
If however you wish to simply measure reaction time only, and not speed, use this scenario with the 1 Gate
Traffic Light Sprint protocol. The reaction time will be the time from the light/buzzer until the athlete triggers
the PS2 accessory by pushing down on the mat/strip/plunger or moving the SMARTSHOXX (i.e. it will not work
for lifting off the switch).

reaction time test)

With your SMARTSPEED drill running in RFID mode, after pressing GO on the PDA, the first light unit in each
lane will begin to flash a green rotating light. This indicates that the SMARTSTART units are ready to receive an
RFID wrist band. One athlete in each lane must place their band against the front of the SMARTSTART unit, and
upon a successful scan the SMARTSTART will beep, and the green light will disappear from the next flashing
unit. When all lanes have been registered successfully, the drill will begin, based on the start delay settings you
have set on the options tab.
The athlete must be ready before the drill begins, as their first movement after the light/buzzer will be
detected by the SMARTSHOXX unit. The first split in the results will therefore equal the reaction time (the time
from light/buzzer until first movement).
For more detailed information on the use of SMARTSCAN RFID or SMARTSHOXX please download the
appropriate manuals from the Fusion website support area.
SCENARIO 6: REACTION TIME DETECTION/RFID READER (REACTIVE/MAT START DRILL)
In this scenario, SMARTSTART can be used as a wireless RFID reader, with the added ability to detect a reaction
time, in either single or multiple lane modes, by connecting a hand start pad, start strip or SMARTJUMP mat
