Steps before using a new lawn
mower
• Please read the operator’s manual carefully.
• Check that the cutting equipment is correctly fitted and
adjusted. See instructions under the heading Assembly.
• Fill ith fuel and oil in the engine. A container ith
sufficient oil quantity is supplied ith the machine. See the
instructions under the heading fuel handling.

SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
Personal protection
• Hearing protection
• Gloves must be orn hen required, for example hen
fitting, inspecting or cleaning cutting attachments.
• Al ays ear heavy, long pants. Do not ear shorts,
sandals or go barefoot.
• Wear sturdy, non-slip boots or shoes.
Generally clothes should be close-fitting ithout restricting
your freedom of movement.
Machine ′ s safety equipment
This section describes the machine ′ s safety equipment, its
purpose, and ho checks and maintenance should be carried
out to ensure that it operates correctly. See the ”What is
hat?” section to locate here this equipment is positioned
on your machine.

Cutting cover and protective cover
On la n mo er M53 S there is a protective cover mounted
over the drive’s gearbox.
The protective cover is designed to reduce the risk of crush
injuries and to catch a broken drive belt.
The cutting cover is designed to reduce vibration and to
reduce the risk of cuts.
Engine bra e handle
The engine brake is designed to stop the engine. When the
grip on the engine brake handle is released the engine should
stop.
Vibration damping system
Your machine is equipped ith a vibration damping system
that is designed to minimise vibration and make operation
easier.
The handlebar system's steel tube and the cutting cover are
designed to minimise the vibrations from the engine.

SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
The machine ′ s vibration damping system reduces the transfer
of vibration bet een the engine unit/cutting equipment and
the machine ′ s handle unit.
Muffler
The muffler is designed to keep noise levels to a minimum
and to direct exhaust fumes a ay from the user.
In areas ith a hot, dry climate there is a high risk of fires.
These areas are sometimes controlled by legislation and
requirements that among other things the muffler must be
equipped ith an approved type of spark arrestor mesh.
For mufflers it is very important that you follo the instructions
on checking, maintaining and servicing your machine.
Chec ing, maintaining and servicing
the machine ′ s safety equipment
Chec ing the cutting cover and protective
cover
Make sure the cutting cover is not damaged and that there are
no visible defects such as cracks.
Check that the protective cover is undamaged and that it is
properly secured.
Chec ing the bra e trigger
Place the la n mo er on firm, flat surface and start it. Make
sure that the cutter cannot come into contact ith the ground
or other objects. See the instructions under the heading Start
and stop. Apply full throttle and then release the brake handle.
The engine brake should al ays be adjusted so that the
engine stops ithin 3 seconds.
Vibration damping system
The handlebar system's steel tube and the cutting cover are
designed to minimise the vibrations from the engine. Make
sure the cutting cover is not damaged and that there are no
visible defects such as cracks.
!
WARNING! Overexposure to vibration can
lead to circulatory damage or nerve damage
in people who have impaired circulation.
Contact your doctor if you experience
symptoms of overexposure to vibration.
These symptoms include numbness, loss of
feeling, tingling, pric ing, pain, loss of
strength, changes in s in colour or
condition. These symptoms normally appear
in the fingers, hands or wrists.
!
WARNING! The exhaust fumes from the
engine are hot and may contain spar s
which can start a fire. Never start the
machine indoors or near combustible
material!
!
WARNING! The muffler gets very hot in use
and remains so for a short time afterwards.
Do not touch the muffler if it is hot!
!
WARNING! All servicing and repair wor on
the machine requires special training. This is
especially true of the machine ′ s safety
equipment. If your machine fails any of the
chec s described below you must contact
your service agent. When you buy any of our
products we guarantee the availability of
professional repairs and service. If the
retailer who sells your machine is not a
servicing dealer, as him for the address of
your nearest service agent.

SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
Muffler
Never use a machine that has a faulty muffler.
Regularly check that the muffler is securely attached to the
machine.
Cutting equipment
This section describes ho to choose and maintain your
cutting equipment in order to:
• Reduces machine vibration.
• Obtain maximum cutting performance.
• Extend the life of cutting equipment.
Make sure the cutter does not hit foreign objects such as
stones, roots or the like. This can make the cutter dull and
bend the engine shaft. Al ays ensure the cutter is ell ground
and balanced correctly. See also instructions under the
heading Maintenance.
Check the cutting attachment for damage or cracks. A
damaged cutting attachment should al ays be replaced.
Also check that the cutter bolt is undamaged and that the
engine shaft is not bent.
When replacing the cutter ensure that all rotating parts are
balanced.
General safety precautions
• A la n mo er is only designed to mo la ns. The only
accessories you can use ith this engine unit are the
cutters e recommend in the Technical data chapter.
• Never use the machine if you are tired, if you have drunk
alcohol, or if you are taking medication that could affect
your vision, your judgement or your co-ordination.
• You must use personal protection henever you use the
machine. See the instructions under the heading Personal
protection.
• Never use a machine that has been modified in any ay
from its original specification.
Never use any accessories other than those recommended in
this manual. See instructions under the headings Cutting
equipment and Technical data.
• Never use a machine that is faulty. Carry out the checks,
maintenance and service instructions described in this
manual. Some maintenance and service measures must
be carried out by trained and qualified specialists. See
instructions under the heading Maintenance.
Before use:
1 Check that the engine brake orks correctly and is
undamaged. See the instructions under the heading
Checking the braking effect.
2 Check that all handles and controls are undamaged and
free of oil.
3 Check that the anti vibration system orks and is not
damaged.
!
WARNING! Never use a machine with faulty
safety equipment. The machine’s safety
equipment must be chec ed and maintained
as described in this section. If your machine
fails any of these chec s contact your
service agent to get it repaired.

WARNING! Running an engine in a confined
or badly ventilated area can result in death
due to asphyxiation or carbon monoxide
poisoning.

WARNING! A faulty cutting attachment may
increase the ris of accidents.

4 Check that the muffler is securely attached and not
damaged.
5 Check that all parts of the la n mo er are tightened
correctly and that they are not damaged or missing.
6 Check that the cutter is undamaged and not cracked.
Replace the cutter if necessary.
Starting
• Never start a la n mo er unless the cutters and all covers
are fitted correctly.
• Never start the machine indoors. Exhaust fumes can be
dangerous if inhaled.
• Observe your surroundings and make sure that there is no
risk of people or animals coming into contact ith the
cutting equipment.
• Place the la n mo er on firm, flat surface and start it.
Make sure that the cutter cannot come into contact ith
the ground or other objects.
• Never t ist the starter cord around your hand.
See the instructions under the heading Start and stop.
Fuel safety
(Refuelling/Storage.)
• Never refuel the machine hile the engine is running.
• Al ays ensure there is adequate ventilation hen
refuelling and filling oil.
• Move the machine at least 3 m from the refuelling point
before starting it.
• Never start the machine:
1 If you have spilt fuel or engine oil on the machine. Wipe
off the spill and allo the remaining fuel to evaporate.
2 If you spill fuel or engine oil on yourself or your clothes.
Change your clothes.
3 If the machine is leaking fuel. Check regularly for leaks
from the fuel cap and fuel lines.
Transport and storage
• The fuel and engine oil tanks should be emptied before
longer periods of storage or hen transporting the la n
mo er. Ask here you can dispose of surplus fuel and
engine oil at your local petrol station.
• Al ays store the la n mo er and fuel so that any leakage
or vapours do not risk coming into contact ith sparks or
naked flames. For example, electrical machines, electric
motors, relays/s itches, boilers, or the like.
• Al ays store fuel in an approved container designed for
that purpose.
General wor ing instructions
Basic safety rules

- To ensure that people, animals or other things cannot
affect your control of the machine.
- To make sure that none of the above might come into
contact ith the cutting equipment.
• Branches, t igs, stones, etc. should be removed from the
la n before you start to mo . Make sure the cutter does
not hit foreign objects such as stones, roots or the like.
This can make the cutter dull and bend the engine shaft.

get into a situation where you feel unsure
about how to progress, stop and see expert

usage which you consider to be beyond your
capability

• Never lift up the la n mo er or carry it around hen the
engine is running. If you must lift the la n mo er, first
s itch off the engine and disconnect the ignition lead from
the spark plug.
• Do not use the machine in bad eather, such as dense
fog, heavy rain, strong ind, intense cold, etc. Working in
bad eather is tiring and often brings added risks, such as
icy ground.
• Make sure you can move and stand safely. Check the area
around you for possible obstacles (roots, rocks, branches,
ditches, etc.) in case you have to move suddenly. Take
great care hen orking on sloping ground.
• The la n mo er should not be used on inclines greater
than 30 degrees.
• The engine should be s itched off hen moving over
ground that is not to be mo ed. For example, gravel
paths, stone, shingle, asphalt, etc.
The brake handle must never be permanently anchored in
handle hen the machine is running.
Follo the instructions above, but do not use a la n mo er in
a situation here you cannot call for help in case of an
accident.
Basic mowing technique
General
• Mo ing slopes can be dangerous. Do not use the la n
mo er on very steep slopes.
• The la n mo er should not be used on inclines greater
than 30 degrees.
• On sloping ground you should ork along the slope. It is
much easier to ork along a slope than it is to ork up and
do n it.
• Branches, t igs, stones, etc. should be removed from the
la n before you start to mo .
• Never lift up the la n mo er or carry it around hen the
engine is running. If you must lift the la n mo er, first
s itch off the engine and disconnect the ignition lead from
the spark plug.
• Make sure the cutter does not hit foreign objects such as
stones, roots or the like. This can make the cutter dull and
bend the engine shaft. A bent axle gives imbalance and
heavy vibration, hich results in a great risk of the cutter
becoming loose.
• If any foreign object is hit or if vibrations occur stop the
machine immediately. Disconnect the HT lead from the
spark plug. Check that the machine is not damaged.
Repair any damage.
• Never mo more than 1/3 of the length of the grass. This
especially applies during dry periods. Mo first ith the
cutting height set high. Then check the result and lo er to
an appropriate height. If the grass is really long, drive
slo ly and mo t ice if necessary.
• Never run ith the machine hen it is running. You should
al ays alk ith the la n mo er.
Cutting height
Shut do n the engine before changing the cutting height.
The cutting height adjustment is spring assisted. The cutting
height can be adjusted in five different steps.
Do not set the cutting height too lo as there is a risk that the
cutters might hit slopes ith unevenness.
!
WARNING! Ma e sure that your hands and
feet do not come near the cutting attachment
when the engine is running.

Adjusting the cutting height
Shut do n the engine before changing the cutting height.
Set the cutting height using the cutting height control on the
right-hand side of the la n mo er.
On la n mo ers ith the type designation M48, proceed as
follo s:
• To raise the cutting height move the lever to the left and
then for ard.
• To lo er the cutting height move the lever to the left and
then back ard.
On la n mo ers ith the type designation M53 S, proceed as
follo s:
• To lo er the cutting height move the lever to the left and
then for ard.
• To raise the cutting height move the lever to the left and
then back ard.
Do not set the cutting height too lo as there is a risk that the
cutters might hit slopes ith unevenness.

ASSEMBLY
Fitting the handlebar
Lift up the handlebar until the handlebar's upper tubular
construction comes directly opposite to the handlebar's lo er
section. Tighten the knob correctly.
Take care not to damage the cables and ires hen you fold
up the handlebar.
Dismantling and assembling the
cutter
The ignition lead should al ays be removed from the spark
plug before repair, cleaning or maintenance ork.
Al ays empty the fuel tank before you place the la n mo er
on its side.
Dismantling
• Unscre the bolt holding the cutter.
• Remove the bolt, asher and spring asher.
• Remove the cutter.
Assembly
• Position the cutter so that the cutting edge faces in the
direction of rotation.
• Fit the spring asher; make sure it centres correctly on
the engine shaft.
• Fit the asher and tighten the bolt correctly. The bolt
should be tightened ith a torque of 45-60 Nm.
!
WARNING! Always wear heavy-duty gloves
when servicing and maintaining the cutting
equipment. The cutters are very sharp and
cuts can occur very easily.

FUEL HANDLING
Fuel
Petrol
• Use good quality unleaded petrol. Leaded petrol can be
used if unleaded petrol is not available.
• Fuel should be at least 77 octane.
• If the machine is not used for some time the fuel tank
should be emptied and cleaned.
Engine oil
Check the oil level before starting the la n mo er. A too lo
oil level can cause serious damage to the engine.
• For the best result and function use HUSQVARNA four-
stroke oil.
• If HUSQVARNA four-stroke oil is not available, you may
use another four-stroke oil of good quality. Contact your
dealer hen selecting oil. In general SAE 30 is
recommended.
• Never use oil intended for t o-stroke engines.
Check the oil level before starting the la n mo er. A too lo
oil level can cause serious damage to the engine.
Oil level
The la n mo er should stand on flat ground hen you check
the oil level. Ensure the ignition lead has been removed from
the spark plug before you open the oil filler cap.
Unscre the oil filler cap and check the oil level on the dipstick
fitted to the cover.
The oil filler cap must be completely scre ed do n to give a
correct picture of the oil level.
If the oil level is lo , fill using engine oil up to the upper level
on the dipstick.
Only use recommended engine oil. See the Technical data
section.
Fuelling
Al ays remove the ignition lead from the spark plug before
refuelling.
Do not fill too much petrol. Leave about 35 mm under the filler
cap so that the fuel can expand.
Clean around the fuel cap. Clean the fuel and oil tank
regularly. The fuel filter should be changed at least once a
year. Contamination in the tanks causes malfunction.
Al ays move the machine about 3 metres from the refuelling
position before starting.

When refuelling, open the fuel cap slowly so
that any excess pressure is released gently.

STARTING AND STOPPING
Starting and stopping
Cold engine
If the la n mo er is being started for the first time press on
the fuel pump five times. After that you should press on the
fuel pump three times hen starting a cold engine.
Warm engine
If the engine is arm you do not generally need to press the
fuel pump. If the engine has stopped because the petrol has
run out, fill ith fuel, and press three times on the fuel pump.
Starting
Ensure the ignition lead sits correctly on the spark plug.
On the M53 S model disengage the drive on the heel by
moving the clutch lever for ard.
Pull the engine brake handle against the upper handlebar
ith your left hand.
Grip the starter handle, slo ly pull out the cord ith your right
hand until you feel some resistance (the starter pa ls grip),
no quickly and po erfully pull the cord.
Never twist the starter cord around your hand.
CAUTION! Do not pull the starter cord all the ay out and do
not let go of the starter handle hen the cord is fully extended.
This can damage the machine.
Drive
The model M53 S is a self-propelled machine ith the drive
on the front heels.
To use the drive on the heel pull the clutch lever to ards
you.
Stopping
On the M53 S model disengage the drive on the heel by
moving the clutch lever for ard.
Stop the engine by releasing the engine brake handle.
!
WARNING! Note the following before
starting:
Do not start a lawn mower unless the cutter
and all covers are fitted correctly. Otherwise
the cutter could come loose and cause
personal injuries.
Always move the machine away from the
refuelling area before starting.
Place the machine on a flat surface. Ensure
the cutting attachment cannot come into
contact with any object.
On the M53 S model disengage
the drive on the wheel by moving
the clutch lever forward.
Keep people and animals well away from the
wor ing area.

MAINTENANCE
Maintenance
The ignition lead should al ays be removed from the spark
plug before repair, cleaning or maintenance ork.
Air filter
The air filter must be regularly cleaned to remove dust and dirt
in order to avoid:
• Carburettor malfunctions
• Starting problems
• Loss of engine po er
• Unnecessary ear to engine parts.
• Excessive fuel consumption.
An air filter that has been in use for a long time cannot be
cleaned completely. The filter must therefore be replaced ith
a ne one at regular intervals. A damaged air filter must
always be replaced.
Cleaning the air filter
M48
Remove the scre s holding the air filter. Take care hen
lifting out the air filter so that dirt does not fall do n into the
carburettor.
Lift off the cover and remove the air duct.
Remove the air filter and check that it is undamaged. Replace
ith a ne air filter if you believe it to be defective.
Wash the filter ith a liquid cleaning agent and ater. After
cleaning the filter should be oiled using engine oil.
Proceed as follo s:
• Put the filter in a plastic bag and pour in ne and clean
engine oil.
• Knead the plastic bag to distribute the oil equally in the
filter.
Squeeze excess oil from the filter into the plastic bag.
Fit the filter in the filter cover; make sure the edge of the filter
comes out to the edge of the cover and forms a protective
seal.
Replace the air duct and fit the cover.
Secure the air filter on the carburettor ith the scre s.
M53 S
Loosen the scre holding the air filter cover and lo er the
filter cover.
Remove the air filter and check that it is undamaged. Replace
ith a ne air filter if you believe it to be defective.
!
WARNING! Ma e sure the cutting attachment
has stopped before cleaning, carrying out
repairs or an inspection. Disconnect the HT
lead from the spar plug.

MAINTENANCE
Clean the filter by knocking the filter against a flat surface.
Never use solvent ith petroleum, for example, kerosene, or
compressed air to clean the filter.
When reassembling, make sure that the filter completely
seals against the filter holder.
Spar plug
If the machine is lo on po er, difficult to start or runs poorly
at idle speed: al ays check the spark plug first before taking
any further action. If the spark plug is dirty, clean it and check
that the electrode gap is 0.76 mm. The spark plug should be
replaced after about a month in operation or earlier if
necessary.
CAUTION! Al ays use the recommended spark plug type!
Use of the rong spark plug can damage the piston/cylinder.
Muffler
The muffler is designed to reduce the noise level and to direct
the exhaust gases a ay from the operator. The exhaust
gases are hot and can contain sparks, hich may cause fire
if directed against dry and combustible material.
Regularly check that the muffler is securely attached to the
machine.
Never use a machine that has a faulty muffler.
Cutter
It is important to have a sharp and correctly balanced cutter.
Loosen the bolt holding the cutter and leave the cutter at a
service orkshop at least once a year for grinding and
balancing. An appropriate time to do this is after the mo ing
season has finished.
The bolt should be tightened ith a torque of 45-60 Nm hen
you fit the cutter again. See instructions under the heading
Assembly.
Changing the oil
The engine oil should be changed each year and every 25
orking hours.
When changing the oil proceed as follo s::
• Empty the fuel tank by running the machine until the tank
is empty.
• Disconnect the HT lead from the spark plug.
• Unscre the oil filler cap.
• Drain the oil by tipping the engine so that the oil runs out
through the filler pipe.
When the la n mo er ith model designation M48 is
tilted, the spark plug should al ays be positioned as the
highest point.
When the la n mo er ith model designation M53 S is
tilted, the air filter should al ays be positioned as the
highest point.
The oil can be drained from the underside by loosening
the oil plug. Do not forget to refit the oil plug before filling
ith oil again.
Ask here you can dispose of surplus engine oil at your
local petrol station.
• Fill ith ne engine oil of a good quality. See the Technical
data section.
• Check the oil level ith the dipstick on the oil filler cap.
• The oil filler cap must be completely scre ed do n to give
a correct picture of the oil level.

WARNING! The muffler gets very hot in use
and remains so for a short time afterwards.
Do not touch the muffler if it is hot!

WARNING! Always wear heavy-duty gloves
when repairing the cutting attachment. The
blades are very sharp and can easily cause
cuts.

MAINTENANCE
If the oil level is lo , fill using engine oil up to the upper
level on the dipstick.
• Scre on the oil filler cap.
Lubrication of the cutting height
adjustment
The mechanical parts of the cutting height system should be
lubricated regularly (once a eek). Lubricate the cutting
height system ith a fe drops of oil.
Drive and gearbox
M53 S
Ensure the heels and heel axles are clean and free from
leaves, grass, etc. It is also important to keep clean around
the drive gearbox.
• Remove the protective cover by unscre ing the scre s.
• No guide the protective cover out under the stay and
over the drive axle.
• Clean the gearbox ith a brush. Also check that the drive
belt and belt pulley are undamaged, for example, no
cracks.
Below you will find some general maintenance
instructions.
Daily maintenance
1 Check that the engine brake handle orks safely.
2 Brush leaves, grass and the like off of the la n mo er.
3 Check the oil level.
4 Clean the air intake on the starter. Check the starter and
starter cord.
5 Check that nuts and scre s are tight.
6 Check the cutting attachment. Never use blades that are
dull, cracked or damaged.
Wee ly maintenance
1 Change the engine oil.
2 Lubricate the cutting height system
3 Clean the air filter. Replace if necessary.
4 Clean the spark plug. Check that the electrode gap is 0.7-
0.8 mm.
5 Clean the cooling fins on the cylinder.
Monthly maintenance
1 Check that drive belt is not damaged and is not visibly
defective.
2 Clean the gearbox.
3 Check the fuel filter and the fuel hose. Replace if
necessary.
4 Clean the inside of the fuel tank.
