ThellfordMonobarCameraTypeU representsa majoradvancein
thedesignof35mm. camerasforscientificandtechnicalpurposes.
Precisionengineeredwithinveryfinetolerances,thecameraissuited
toa widevarietyofindustrial,medicalandscientificapplications.
ThellfordMonobarTypeU hasbeendesignedtoachievemaximum
flexibilityofoperation,yetitretainssimplicityofcontrol.Themonobar
system,combiningprecisecameramovements,permitstheuseofthe
cameraindifficultandawkwardsituationswhilstmaintaininga high
degreeofaccuracy.Themonobarandtiltingandswingingmovements
aregraduated,anessentialfeatureinprecisionandclose-upwork.
Allcontrolsaresimpleandpositiveinuse.
Asuitablechoiceoflensesandancillaryfittingsisavailablewhich
increasesthecamera'sversatility.
TheextremeflexibilityofthecameramovementsoftheIlfordMono-
barCameraTypeU isachievedbytheinstructionofthecamerain
threebasicparts:
1.TheMonobar.
2.FrontPanelAssembly.
3.RearPanelAssembly.
Thecontrolsonthefrontandrearpanelsaresimilarlysituatedfor
simplicityofoperationandeachcameramovementhasitsownlocking
devicetoproviderigidityinanyposition.
TheMonobar
Theunitconsistsofa rigidbarwitha rackandpiniongearing,
mountedina panandtilthead.Themonobar,12in.long,hasa milli-
metrescaleengravedalongitslengthfromwhichmeasurementscan
betakenagainstindexmarksonthefrontandrearassemblies.For
true-to-scaleandotheraccurateapplicationsofphotographythe
positionofthemonobarandcameracanbereadfromtherearfaceof
thepanandtilthead.
Thepanandtiltheadcarriesthecontrolsforthemonobarandthe
panandtiltmovements.ThebaseisthreadedtoacceptanEnglish
threadtripod.

TheFrontandRearPanelAssemblies
Eachhasa rackandpinionmovementforfocusing,a stirrupto
whichthepanelsareattached,andeachhasrising,swingingand
tiltingmovements.Locatingstudsandlockingclipsarefittedtotheface
ofthepanelsfortheattachmentofthelenspanelandbellows.
Thecircularfrontpanelisdesignedforinterchangeabilityoflenses.
Thelenses,mountedinblacksquarelenspanels,canbefittedquickly
andeasily.(Figure1.)
Thecircularrearpanelaccommodatesthemagazineandthefocusing
magnifierunitwhichalsoservestoholdthemagazineinposition.

Thefrontandrearpanelsareconnectedbysquarebellowswhich
arequicklyfittedorremoved.

CameraMovements
Withtheexceptionof therotatingback,allmovementson thefront
andrearpanelsaresimilarinoperationandextent.Theamountof
travelofthecameramovementsisgovernedbythefocallengthofthe
lensinuse,thecameraextensionandthebellowsfitted.
Itisimportantnottoover-tightenlockingscrews;fingertightness
issufficientforrigidity.
RiseandFall
Thisiscontrolledbytheknobatthebottomofeachbearingblock
(seeFigure3).Thepanelsmaybemovedupordownanywherewithin
the1½in.lengthoftravel.

Thetiltmovements,locatedontopofthestirrupscarryingthepanels,
operateaboutthehorizontalcentreofeachpanel.Thepanelscanbe
rotatedthrough30°in5°stepsoneithersideofthevertical(seeFigure4).

Therotatingbackrevolvesthrough360°andislockedbytheknurled
knobimmediatelyabovethebellows(seeFigure2),Indicatormarks
areprovidedtoshowwhenthebackisintheverticalorhorizontal
position.
LensPanelsandBellows
Thesearelocatedbytwopositioningstudsatthebottomofthe
panelsandareheldinpositionbytwoclipswhichswinginwards.
Thefrontandrearpanelsarejoinedbysquarebellowsofsufficient
sizetoenablethemaximumextensionofthecameratobeused.Bag
bellowsareavailableforthewideranglelenses.
FocusingMagnifier
Thefine-focusmagnifierunitfittedtothecameraalsoservesto
holdthemagazineinposition.Itislocatedorwithdrawnbyfinger
pressureonthespringcatchatthebottomofthestirrup.Coarseand
fineadjustmentsareprovidedsothatthefocusingmagnifiercanbe
adjustedtotheuser'seye.Themagnifiercanbewithdrawnfromthe
unitforfull-frameviewing.A right-anglefocusingmagnifierisavailable
asanextra.

TheMagazine(Figures5&6)
Thefilmmagazineisinthreeparts:
1.Thefrontbodywhichincorporatesthecameraregistrationplate,
thesheathandthefilmgate.
2.Thelidwhichincludesthesheathoperatingdisc,twolocking
screwsanda dataplate.
3.Thefilmtransportmechanismandpressureplate.
Themagazine,designedfordaylightloading,acceptsstandard
daylight-loadingcassettesandissimpletooperate.
ToLoadtheMagazine(Figure7)
Loosenthetwolockingscrewsonthemagazinelid,removethelid
andwithdrawthefilmtransportmechanism.
Withthepressureplatedownwards,liftthefilmwindknob(onthe
right)todisengagethegears,thenrotatetheknobanti-clockwiseuntil
theslotinthetake-upspoolisuppermost.
Lifttherewindknob,movethecassettelockingcatchawayandinsert
thecassettethroughtheapertureinthebottomofthefilmmechanism,
ensuringthatthefilmleaderisoutwardwiththeemulsionuppermost.
Lockthecassetteinpositionwiththelockingcatchandthenpush
downtherewindknobtoengagewiththefilmcassetteinsidecore.
Sufficientfilmleadermustbewithdrawnfromthecassetteforthe
filmtopassaroundtheroller,acrossthepressureplateandsprocket
teethspoolforattachmenttothetake-upspool.
Insertthefilminthetake-upspoolinthedirectionoftravel(anti-
clockwise),pressthewindknobdownandwindonuntilthesprocket
teethengagethefilmperforationsonbothedges.

Replacethefilmtransportmechanisminthefrontbody,pressure
platedownwards,sothatitispositionedbythesmalllocatingstudsat
thebottom,withthewindandrewindknobsengagedintheslotsof
thefrontbody.
Replacethemagazinelid,makingsurethatwhenitispressed
downwardsthefilmsheathdiscactuatesthefilmsheath.Tightenthe
lockingscrews(fingertightnessissufficient).
Withthefilmsheathclosed,windonthreeframestobringthe
unexposedfilmintopositioninthegate.
Settheexposurecounterto19or35dependingonthefilmwhich
hasboonloaded.Theexposurecounterindicateshowmanyexposures
remainInthecassette.
Pressthewindknobdowntoengagethegearingandthemagazine
isthenreadyforuse.
LoadingtheMagazineon
totheCamera
Withdrawthefocusingmagnifierunittoitsfullextentbygripping
thethumbpieceatthebottomofthestirrup.
Insertthemagazinefromthetopsothattheregistrationplateis
locatedintheapertureintherearpanel.
Pushthefocusingmagnifierunitforwarduntilthelockingcatch
locatesinthenotchinthebar.Makesurethelockingcatchisengaged
correctlybyfirmforwardpressure.
Openthesheathwithananti-clockwisemovementofthesheath
operatingdisc(intheopenpositionthesheathcanbeBoonoverthe
topofthemagazine).Thecameraisnowreadyforuse.

ToUnloadtheMagazine
Closethesheathandremovethemagazinebywithdrawingthe
focusingmagnifiertoitsfullextent.
Pullupthefilmwindknobtoreleasethewindingmechanismand
rewindthefilmbyturningtherewindknobinthedirectionofthearrow.
Removethecassettefromthemagazinebyadoptingthereverse
sequencetothatusedforloading.
IMPORTANT:Whenremovingthemagazineforfocusingpurposes
duringoperation,DONOTFORGETTOCLOSETHESHEATH.
TheMonobarCameraTypeF,precisionengineeredwiththesame
accuracyasthetypeU,isdesignedtofulfiltheneeds'ofcertain
specialisedbranchesofphotography,suchasphotomicrographyand
photomacrography,wherecameracorrectionsarenotneeded.
Thefrontandrearpanelsarerigidlymountedonbearingblocks
and,withthemonobar,arefittedwithfocusingcontrolsandlocking
devicesforpositivelocation.
Therotatingbackcanbemovedthrough360°andislockedbythe
knurledknobimmediatelyabovethebellows.Indicatormarksshow
whenthebackisintheverticalorhorizontalpositions.
Thelenses,bellowsandmagazinesarefullyinterchangeablewith
thetypeU camera.
