•Whenliftinganyheavyobject:
1.Enureyoucantandafelywithoutlipping.
2.Ditributetheweightoftheobjectequallyacrobothfeet.
3.Liftlowly.Nevermoveuddenlyortwitwhenyouattempttolift.
4.Liftbytandingorbypuhingupwithyourlegmucle;thiactionremovethetrainfromthe
mucleinyourback.
Donotattempttoliftanyobjectsthatweighmorethan16kg(35lb)orobjectsthatyouthinkare
tooheavyforyou.
•Donotperformanyactionthatwouldcreateahazardforthecutomer,orwouldmakethecomputer
unafe.
•Beforeyoutartthecomputer,enurethatotherervicerepreentativeandcutomerperonnelarenot
inapoitionthatwouldcreateahazardforthem.
•Placeremovedcoverandotherpartinaafeplace,awayfromallperonnel,whileyouareervicingthe
computer.
•Keepyourtoolcaeawayfromareathatpeoplemaywalkthroughtoenureno-onetripoverit.
•Donotwearlooeclothingthatcanbetrappedinthemovingpartofamachine.Enurethatyourleeve
arefatenedorrolledupaboveyourelbow.Ifyourhairilong,tieorfatenitback.
•Inerttheendofyournecktieorcarfinideclothingorfatenitwithanon-conductiveclip,
approximately8centimeter(3inche)fromtheend.
•Donotwearjewelry,chain,metal-frameeyeglae,ormetalfatenerforyourclothing.
Reeber:Metalobjectaregoodelectricalconductor.
•Wearafetyglaewhenyouare:hammering,drillingoldering,cuttingwire,attachingpring,uing
olvent,orworkinginanyotherconditionthatmightbehazardoutoyoureye.
•Afterervice,reintallallafetyhield,guard,label,andgroundwire.Replaceanyafetydevice
thatiwornordefective.
•Reattachallcovercorrectlybeforereturningthecomputertothecutomer.

•Findtheroomemergencypower-off(EPO)witch,diconnectingwitch,orelectricaloutlet.Ifanelectrical
accidentoccur,youcanthenoperatethewitchorunplugthepowercordquickly.
•Donotworkaloneunderhazardouconditionornearequipmentthathahazardouvoltage.
•Diconnectallpowerbefore:
–Performingamechanicalinpection
–Workingnearpowerupplie
–RemovingorintallingFieldReplaceableUnit(FRU)
•Beforeyoutarttoworkonthecomputer,unplugthepowercord.Ifyoucannotunplugit,akthe
cutomertopower-offtheelectricaloutletthatuppliepowertothemachineandtolocktheelectrical
outletintheoffpoition.
•Ifyouneedtoworkonacomputerthathaexpoedelectricalcircuit,obervethefollowingprecaution:
–Enurethatanotherperon,familiarwiththepower-offcontrol,inearyou.
Reeber:Anotherperonmutbetheretowitchoffthepower,ifneceary.
–Ueonlyonehandwhenworkingwithpowered-onelectricalequipment;keeptheotherhandinyour

Obervethepecialafetyprecautionwhenyouworkwithveryhighvoltage;theeintructionarein

•Regularlyinpectandmaintainyourelectricalhandtooltoenuretheyareafetoue.
•Donotuewornorbrokentoolandteter.
•Neverassumethatpowerhabeendiconnectedfromacircuit.Firt,checkthatithabeenpoweredoff.
•Alwaylookcarefullyforpoiblehazardinyourworkarea.Exampleoftheehazardarewetfloor,
non-groundedpowerextenioncable,conditionthatmaycaueorallowpowerurge,andmiing
afetyground.
•Donottouchliveelectricalcircuitwiththereflectiveurfaceofaplaticdentalmirror.Thiurfacei
conductive,andtouchingalivecircuitcancaueperonalinjuryanddamagetothecomputer.
•Donotervicethefollowingpartwiththepoweronwhentheyareremovedfromtheirnormaloperating
poitioninacomputer:
–Powerupplyunit
–Pump
–Blowerandfan
–Motorgenerator
andimilarunit.(Thipracticeenurecorrectgroundingoftheunit.)
•Ifanelectricalaccidentoccur:
–Uecaution;donotbecomeavictimyourelf.

Theintentofthiinpectionguideitoaityouinidentifyingpotentialhazardpoedbytheeproduct.
Eachcomputer,aitwadeignedandbuilt,hadrequiredafetyitemintalledtoprotectuerand
erviceperonnelfrominjury.Thiguideaddreeonlythoeitem.However,goodjudgmenthouldbe
uedtoidentifypotentialafetyhazardduetoattachmentoffeatureoroptionnotcoveredbythi
inpectionguide.
Ifanyhazardarepreent,youmutdeterminehowerioutheapparenthazardcouldbeandwhetheryou
cancontinuewithoutfirtreolvingtheproblem.
Coniderthefollowingitemandtheafetyhazardtheypreent:
•Electricalhazard,epeciallyprimarypower(primaryvoltageontheframecancaueeriouorfatal
electricalhock).
•Exploivehazard,uchaadamagedCRTfaceorbulgingcapacitor
•Mechanicalhazard,uchalooeormiinghardware
Theguideconitofaerieofteppreentedaachecklit.Beginthecheckwiththepoweroff,and
thepowercorddiconnected.
Checklit:
1.Checkexteriorcoverfordamage(looe,broken,orharpedge).
2.Power-offthecomputer.Diconnectthepowercord.
3.Checkthepowercordfor:
a.Athird-wiregroundconnectoringoodcondition.Ueametertomeaurethird-wireground
continuityfor0.1ohmorlebetweentheexternalgroundpinandframeground.
b.Thepowercordhouldbetheappropriatetypeapecifiedinthepartliting.
c.Inulationmutnotbefrayedorworn.
4.Removethecover.
5.Checkforanyobvioualteration.Uegoodjudgmentatotheafetyofanyalteration.
6.Checkinidetheunitforanyobviouhazard,uchametalfiling,contamination,waterorother
liquid,orignoffireormokedamage.
7.Checkforworn,frayed,orpinchedcable.
8.Checkthatthepower-upplycoverfatener(creworrivet)havenotbeenremovedortamperedwith.
Handlingelectrostaticdischarge-sensitivedevices
Anycomputerpartcontainingtranitororintegratedcircuit(IC)houldbeconideredenitiveto
electrotaticdicharge(ESD).ESDdamagecanoccurwhenthereiadifferenceinchargebetweenobject.
ProtectagaintESDdamagebyequalizingthechargeothatthecomputer,thepart,theworkmat,andthe
peronhandlingthepartareallattheamecharge.
