INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS: DAY/NIGHT SOLAR VENT
FEATURES & OPERATION
Switch Operation
The Day/Night features two switches located on the bottom of the battery
compartment. The three-position fan switch can be set to ‘Intake’, ‘Exhaust’, or ‘O’
positions. The second switch controls ‘On’/’O’ operation of the LED accessory light.
When both switches are set to the ‘O’ positon, all current produced by the solar array
is used to charge the battery.
Shut-o Damper
The Day/Night VENT is equipped with a green water shut-o damper which can be
operated from below. There are two ears on the inside edge of the fan housing.
To open and allow outside air ow, pull the damper down about a 1/2" (13 mm). To
close, push it up until it rests and seals against the vent cover. The damper may need
lubrication occasionally if it is hard to open and close. To lubricate, apply a small
amount of silicone grease to the damper.
NOTE: To prevent unnecessary wear on the motor, switch the vent to the o
position when the shut-o damper is in the closed position.
Rechargeable Battery
Each Day/Night vent is equipped with a built-in replaceable battery. The solar array
keeps the battery charged during daylight hours so that it can run the fan at night and
during low light situations. The Day/Night will run for up to 24 hours without sunlight
on a fully charged battery. Average battery life is 3-5 years, depending on climate
conditions.
NOTE: To maximize battery life, make sure it as fully charged as possible during initial
use. To fully charge, expose vent to the sun, (not a light bulb) for 24 to 36 hours. This
will insure a fully-charged battery. (Depending on angle to the sun, weather conditions,
and shadowing of the solar array, the time necessary to charge the battery may vary.)
Insect Screen
Your new vent comes with a removable insect screen that attaches to the shut-o
damper. Installation of the insect screen is optional. The screen is easy to install/
remove by grasping the ns on the outside of the screen and carefully twisting. Make
sure to clean the insect screen periodically to ensure maximum air ow.
INSTALL PRECAUTIONS
DECK CAMBER (OR DECK CURVATURE) is VERY CRITICAL: When installing the Day/
Night Vent on a cambered, or curved, surface, it is critical to check to make sure there is
no more than 1/2" (12 mm) of camber over a 12" (300 mm) length of deck surface. Too
much camber will distort the unit’s base plate, causing the cover to be raised o the
deck. This creates the potential for water to get under the cover and may also prevent
the damper from closing properly.
To check for camber, place a 12" (300 mm) straight edge on the deck location for the
vent and try to rock it. Then rotate it 90 degrees and repeat.

IMPORTANT!
Cut the hole for your Day/Night Vent only after carefully considering the location and
the correct sizing of the hole. We recommend that you MEASURE TWICE AND CUT
ONCE!
DO NOT Install the Day/Night Vent in an area with more than 1/2" of camber over a 12"
length of deck surface.
CAUTION: Conrm the location you select for
the mounting hole does not go through any
electrical wiring, plumbing or other obstructions.
Be sure that power tools are properly grounded.
Take the time to bed the exterior trim ring and
fasteners properly with sealant. Silicone sealant
is good for at installations on wood or berglass.
Polyurethane bedding compound is recommended
on cambered surfaces or hatch installations where
fasteners will not be used. Use of polysulde
compounds, may damage the area and melt the plastic.
NEW INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS
1) Select an installation location that is as at as possible. There should be no more
than 1/2" of camber per foot.
2) Mark the location of the hole using a compass.
3) Using a hole saw or sabre saw, cut a 3-3/4" diameter hole for the 3" vent, or a 4-3/4"
hole for the 4" vent.
4) Drill pilot holes for screws, bed the exterior threaded trim plate and screw into
the deck.
5) Turn the vent unit into the trim plate until fully seated onto deck surface.
6) Turn the interior threaded trim plate into place until ush with ceiling surface.
Drill and fasten with screws if desired.
MAINTENANCE
Your Day/Night Vent is a maintenance-free ventilator. However, it is recommended
to periodically clean the solar array with a mild cleaner to ensure the vent charges
continuously and receives maximum sunlight. If after a few years of operation the
battery is no longer performing at peak performance, replace it with part N20890—
NiMh Replacement Battery Pack.
The battery can be replaced by carefully unscrewing the switch housing which acts as
the battery compartment cover. Be careful not to pull the wire leads from the battery
compartment cover. Unplug the wire leads connecting the battery pack to the switch
housing, and remove the battery pack. Take care not to over-stress the wire leads when
reinstalling the battery compartment cover.

Trouble Shooting—Day/Night Vent Stops Running:
• Check the On-O Switch—Make sure the switch is on.
• Check the Solar Array—Make sure the solar array has adequate exposure to sunlight
and is not in a shaded area.
• Check/Replace the Battery—If the switch is on and the vent is not working, the
battery may be dead. A dead battery short circuits the solar array and will not deliver
power to the motor. Test the vent without the battery in it by placing the array in
direct sun to see if the motor turns (make sure the switch is on). If the motor turns,
the battery is dead.
NOTE: The vent will work without the battery, but only during sunlight hours.
• Check the Solar Array & Fan Motor
If the motor still did not turn when the battery was removed, either the array is
damaged or the motor does not work. Contact Technical Service for warranty concerns.
