mAT-10
Automatic Tuner with QRP Transceivers
Instruction Manual Version V1.0
INTRODUCTION
The mAT-10 is a compact and tuner designed for YAESU FT-817/818, that can a so be used
with any QRP transceiver. When connected to YAESU FT-817/818 through the supp ied
dedicated contro cab e mode mAT-CY, it is contro ed by “one touch” tuning through the
transceiver. If no contro cab e is used, it is a universa QRP tuner for a ow-power transceivers.
The mAT-10 is used for QRP transmission and its ACC interface is on y designed for the
YAESU FT-817/818. It can not be used for other YAESU transmitters. Higher power YAESU
transceivers can contro the mAT-TUNER mAT-30 tuner. Visit our website to earn about the
mAT-30.
The mAT-10 is connected to the ACC port of the FT-817/818 transceiver through supp ied
contro cab e mAT-CY. The ACC interface a ows an externa device such as a PC or the mAT-10
to contro the FT-817/818 by sending it seria commands. The mAT-10 has the function of "one
key tuning". When the mu ti-function key on tuner is pressed, the mAT-10 command FT-817/818
switches to FM mode and transmits a carrier to initiate a tuning cyc e. After waiting for the tuning
cyc e to comp ete, it stops transmitting the carrier, saves the settings, and restores the transmitter
to its previous mode. This process is automated and does not require manua operation.
When mAT-10 is used with other QRP transceivers, it does not need a contro cab e and works
on y by connecting RF cab es. The tuning process is comp eted by pressing the the TUNE &
POWER mu ti-function button on the pane . Press and ho d for 1 second and the tuning cyc e wi
start.
The tuner operates within the range of 1.8MHz to 54MHz, at power eve s up to 30 watts.
It wi tune dipo es, vertica s, Yagis, or virtua y any coax-fed antenna. The impedance matching
range is 5-1500 ohms, in excess of automatic tuners used in many HF transceivers or other
avai ab e externa automatic tuners.
The mAT-10 has 16,000 frequency memories. When tuning on or near a previous y tuned
frequency, the mAT-10 uses “Memory Tune” to reca the previous tuning parameters in a fraction
of a second. If no memorized settings are avai ab e, the tuner runs a fu tuning cyc e, storing the
parameters for memory reca on subsequent tuning cyc es on that frequency. In this manner, the
mAT-10 “ earns” as it is used, adapting to the bands and frequencies as it goes. You can a so start
a tuning cyc e manua y whenever necessary.
Two 10440 ithium batteries are insta ed in the interior of the mAT-10, which provides power
for the tuner. Because of the use of advanced magnetic retaining re ays, the power consumption
of mAT-10 is very sma . The ithium battery can operate for a ong time after it is fu y charged.
Specia chargers are provided with tuners. You must use its own charger to charge the tuner. It is
dangerous to charge with an incorrect charger.
In addition to the mAT-10 tuner, the package inc udes the mAT-CY contro cab e mAT-CY,
ithium battery charger and user manua . Latest version of user manua s can a so be down oaded
direct y from our web page. The same contro cab e mAT-CY can a so be used with the mAT-30
tuner. They are identica .

Important Note: Before the first use of the tuner or
after the battery is replaced, the tuner must be
charged by the charger.
CONTROL CABLE mAT-CY
The mAT-10’s contro cab e mAT-CY provides contro signa s between FT-817/818 and the
tuner. When the mAT-10 is turned on, it wi automatica y detect whether it is connected to
YAESU FT-817/818 through the contro cab e. If so, the interna software matching FT-817/818
wi start running. If it is not connected to FT-817/818, the interna genera tuner software wi be
run.

Press and ho d the mu ti-function button unti the "Tuning" ight is turned on and then re ease
it. The tuner wi automatica y contro the transceiver to comp ete the fo owing operations,
without manua operation by the user.
a. The tuner sends contro commands to FT-817/818 and the transmitter wi be activated and
a carrier signa wi be sent out.
b. The tuner asks the current frequency data of FT-817/818 and reads the matching data from
its own memory to match the capacitance and inductance in the LC circuit. Then the current SWR
is detected. If the SWR is not higher than 1.5:1, the tuning is comp eted and the fo owing step d
is executed, otherwise step c is executed.
c. Start a comp ete tuning cyc e. LC circuit in the mAT-10 wi be se ected/ adjusted for
optimum SWR.
d. When tuning is comp ete, transmission wi cease, and you wi be ready for operation.
The tuner stores the configuration data in the memory corresponding to the current frequency.
The data in the memory can sti be stored effective y after shutdown unti overwritten by data the
next time the tuner is used on the same frequency.
TUNING PROCESS, OTHER TRANSCEIVERS
For other transceivers, the tuning steps are different, requiring the user to comp ete the process
manua y as fo ows:
a. Set the transceiver to the FM, FSK or RTTY mode, in order to make the transceiver output
a stab e carrier signa .
b. Reduce power output to 5 watts or ess.

d. Restore mode and power eve of the transceiver to desired settings. The tuning process is
over, The front pane 's three ights are used to disp ay the current SWR.
OPERATION NOTE
During the tuning process of the mAT-10 tuner, high SWR can be detected by the transmitter.
There are a few transmitters that stop transmitting when SWR is high and cause the tuner to be
unab e to tune due to zero power output.
BATTERIES AND TUNING
Two 10440 ithium batteries insta ed inside mAT-10 provide power for the tuner. Tuner can
on y be charged with inc uded 8.4 vD charger. The mAT-10 uses itt e power whi e tuning, and
essentia y zero power when in standby. If batteries need to be rep aced, p ease use the same type
of batteries.
The indicator on the charger shows the charging process. The ye ow ight indicates charging is
in progress, and the green indicator indicates charging is comp eted.
Before the first use or after the battery is rep aced, the tuner must be charged by the charger to
