9.0 PRODUCT SUMMARY
9.1 Product summarize
The Maxcom MX-A5100 Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifier (EDFA) has been
designed for CATV, FTTH and HFC applications. The EDFA is suitable for long haul
transmission networks or FTTH distribution networks.
The MX-A5100 series is a CATV booster EDFA has a gain spectrum band within
1540~1565nm. It is designed for the application of single channel, or 1~8
continuous ribbon channels (ITU wavelength). Typically, a fiber CATV system
operates in single wavelength that has no strict requirement on gain flatness. The
MX-A5100 booster amplifier is featured with low NF and high-saturated output
power. It is applicable for Primary Headends, Secondary Headends, Hubs, OTN’s
and line relay, as well as other optical communication networks. The MX-A5100 is
applied commonly and widely compatible with other EDFA’s and Transmitters in a
CATV system.
The MX-A5100 series EDFA’s are high performance, single optical output (optional
2, 4, 8 output) EDFA’s designed for analog and digital CATV QAM signals. Maxcom’s
1550 optical amplifiers and EDFA’s adopt world class pump lasers and American
OFS erbium-doped optical fiber components. Excellent APC, ACC and ATC control,
superb design in the ventilation and heat-dissipation ensure long life and a highly
reliable operation of the pump laser.
The LCD at the front panel offers equipment status and warning alarms. The laser
will switch off automatically if optical power is lost, which offers protection for the
laser.
10.0 AMPLIFIER CONTROLS, INDICATORS, AND ALARMS
This section of the manual will give an overview of the available menus in the
MX-A5100 series amplifier. All instructions in Section 2.0 refer to the
representation of the front panel shown in the diagram below. The user can scroll
through the menus by using the push buttons that are on the front panel and are
located in the right of the LCD screen.

The operation of the control panel

10.1.3 Menu assistant manual
1. Input power (INPUT):
Input power >+10 dBm, display HIGHER;
Input power <-10 dBm, display LOWER.
2. Output (OUTPUT):
When input displays HIGHER or LOWER, the output power
displays NO OUTPUT.
3. Laser temperature (TEMP): °C. The laser temp is set in the range
of 20°C~30°C. If the detected temp exceeds the range, the red
light will show an alarm and the power supply of the laser will shut
off automatically.
4. Bias (BIAS): Bias is the key index of the laser. If the fixed range is
exceeded, the power supply of the laser will be shut off
automatically to protect the laser

5. +5Vvoltage(+5V READS) >±0.5V alarm.
-5Vvoltage(-5V READS) >±0.5V alarm.
6. Press \key to amend the IP address menu that needs to be
amended. Press at the same time to enter the menu, press
to choose the amended place, push to amend, and then
press to enter into save and exit.
For example, amend IP setup menu, IP: 192.168.000.015; if you
want to change 5 to 6, use to enter the IP menu, then press
to choose the place of 5, press key to change 5 to 6, and
then press to save amended IP:192.168.000.016

12.0 DESCRIPTION OF STATUS ALARM
Working status indication (LED) is near the power supply switch in the front panel.
When it is green, the device is working properly; when it is red, the laser does not
operate; when it is blinking red, there is an alarm.
A. With the power supply, if the unit is good, the digital panel will display “READY:
KEY OFF”and there is Red light.
B. Turn on with the key, the digital panel will display “KEY OFF”. After a few
seconds, the laser is turned on automatically and the indication light turns
Green from Red.
C. Pressing \bottom can display parameters .
D. If any fault listed above has occurred, there will be an alarm (Red blinking),
Microprocessor will cut off the laser automatically, and digital panel will show
the reason of the fault.
E. In order to protect the laser, the power supply of the laser has a time-delay
function. After turning on with the key, the laser will start to operate after 10
seconds.
