Chapter 1 – Product Overview
ThisguideexplainshowtoinstallandoperateMultiModemZDXfaxmodemswhileusingaMulti‐TechZDXmodemrack.This
guidedescribesthemodemrack,technicalspecifications,powersupply,howtoinstallamodemintherack,connecting
RS232Candphonelinesandpoweringup.
ZDXrackholdsuptotwelvemodemsandaredundantpowersupply.TheZDXrackclearlydisplayswhatishappeningwith
yourdatacommunications.EachmodemhasitsownLEDdisplay,withindicatorssuchasTransmitData,ReceiveData,
CarrierDetect,SpeedStatus,OffHook,TerminalReady,ErrorCorrection,andFaxmode.
Therackisavailableinboth115Vand230Vversions.Therackis19incheswideby5¼incheshigh.Youcanmounttherack
inthesamecabinetasyourcomputer,oryoucanenclosetherackinaseparatecabinet.Toinstallmodemsintotherack,
simplyopentherackdoorandslideinthemodems.

Chapter 2 – Installing Modems in the
Rack
BeforeYouBegin
TheMultiModemZDXmodemsareshippedwiththeDTRsignalcontrolledbytheinterfaceandthemodem’sCommand
modeenabled.Withrack‐mountmodems,itisassumed:
●Modemsareinacentralsitecomputerenvironment,withthemodemsconnectedtoaminiormainframe
computer.
●Themainpurposeofthemodemsistoautomaticallyanswerincomingcallsfromremoteusers.
Disablecommandmodeunlessyouwanttogivethemodemcommands.LeavingCommandmodeenabledoffersthe
possibilityofausercallingintothemodemandreconfiguringit,orcausingittodialout.Refertotheappropriatemodem
owner’smanualtoconfigurethemodemforyourapplication.
SafetyRecommendations
ObservethefollowingsafetyrecommendationswheninstallingaMulti‐TechZDXRack.
●Neverinstalltelephonewiringduringalightingstorm.
●Neverinstalltelephonejacksinwetlocationsunlessthejackisspecificallydesignedforwetlocations.
●Nevertouchinsulatedtelephonewiresorterminalsunlessthetelephonelinehasbeendisconnectedatthe
networkinterface.
●Usecautionwheninstallingormodifyingtelephonelines.
●Avoidusingatelephone(otherthanacordlesstype)duringanelectricalstorm.Theremaybearemoterisk
ofelectricalshockfromlighting.
●Donotusethetelephonetoreportagasleakinthevicinityoftheleak.
●Thisproductisforuseonlywithlistedcomputers,orequivalent.
InstallingtheRackandModems
ToinstalltheZDXrack,withupto12ZDXmodemsintherack.
1. Unpacktherackandcheckallitemsagainsttheshippinglisttoensurethatyouhavereceivedthecorrectitems.Rack
componentsinclude:
●Rack
●Powercord
●Owner'smanual
2. Inspecttherackforvisibleshippingdamage.
●Ifyouseedamage,donotpower‐ontherack.ContactMulti‐Tech'sTechnicalSupportforadvice.
●Ifyoudonotseedamage,mounttherackinastandard19‐inchwiderackenclosure.
3. Opentherackfrontdoor.
4. UnpacktheZDXmodemsthatyouwanttoinstallintherack.
Note:Duetoheightclearancedonotattachtheplasticfeettothemodem.

Note:Youwon’tusethetypicalpowersupplycordwhenyouinstallthemodeminarack.
5. Ensurethatthepoweron/offswitchontheZDXmodemisintheOnpositionbeforeyouputthemodemintherack.
Whenthemodemisintherack,youdon’thaveaccesstothepoweron/offswitch.
6. SlideaZDXmodemintooneofthetwelveavailableslots.
7. Connecttheappropriatepowercableonthebackoftheracktothemodem'spowerjack.Youmayhavetoholdthe
modeminplacefromthefrontwhileplugginginthepowercable.Thetoppowercablesuppliespowertothetop6
modemsandthebottompowercablesuppliespowertothebottom6modems.
8. Foreachmodembeinginstalled,repeatthesesteps:ensurethepoweron/offswitchisOn,slidethemodemintoan
availableslotandconnectthepowercabletothemodem.
9. ToconnecttheRS232Cserialcablesandtelephonelinestothemodems,refertotheMultiModemZDXQuickReference
Guide.
10. Whenallthemodemsareconnectedtothecomputerandtelephonelines,plugtheACpowercordsuppliedwiththe
rackintothepowercordconnectoronthebackoftherackandtoaliveACoutlet.

TipsforMountingModemsintheRack
Ifthechassisisinstalledinaclosedormulti‐rackassembly,theoperatingtemperatureoftherackenvironmentmaybe
greaterthantheambienttemperature.Besuretoinstallthechassisinanenvironmentthatiscompatiblewiththe
maximumratedambienttemperature.SeeTechnicalspecificationsinChapter1.
Whenmountingtheequipmentintherackmakesuremechanicalloadingiseventoavoidahazardouscondition,suchas
loadingheavyequipmentintherackunevenly.Therackshouldsafelysupportthecombinedweightofallequipmentit
supports.
Whenconnectingtheequipmenttothesupplycircuit,besuretocheckequipmentnameplateratingstoavoidoverloading
circuits.Overloadingthecircuitsmaycausedamagetoover‐currentprotectiondevicesandsupplywiring.
Slotsandopeningsinthecabinethelpprovideventilation.Toensurereliableoperationoftheproductandtoprotectit
fromoverheating,maintainaminimumof1inchclearanceonthetops,and1inchclearanceonthesides.
PoweringUp
Oncepowerisappliedtotherack,themodemsperformadiagnosticself‐test,indicatedbythespeedLEDsflashingin
sequenceforapproximatelytwoseconds,thenthe19or28(dependingonmodelofZDXmodem)lights.Ifnoneofthe
modemshavepower,checkthepowercordconnectionandthattheACoutletislive.Ifoneormoreofthemodemsdonot
powerup,checkthepowerconnectiontothatmodem.
IfoneofthegreenpowersupplyLEDsonthefrontoftherackisnoton,thenoneoftheredundantpowersuppliesis
defective.
ModelswithACpowerinputsareintendedtobeusedwithathree‐wiregroundingtypeplug—aplugthathasagrounding
pin.Equipmentgroundingistoensuresafeoperation.Donotdefeatthegroundingmeansandverifydeviceisreliably
groundedwhenmountedwithinarack.

ThisequipmenthasbeentestedandfoundtocomplywiththelimitsforaClassAdigitaldevice,pursuantto47
CFRPart15regulations.Thestatedlimitsinthisregulationaredesignedtoprovidereasonableprotection
againstharmfulinterferenceinacommercialenvironment.Thisequipmentgenerates,uses,andcanradiate
radiofrequencyenergy,andifnotinstalledandusedinaccordancewiththeinstructions,maycauseharmful
interferencetoradiocommunications.However,thereisnoguaranteethatinterferencewillnotoccurina
particularinstallation.Ifthisequipmentdoescauseharmfulinterferencetoradioortelevisionreception,which
canbedeterminedbyturningtheequipmentoffandon,theuserisencouragedtotrytocorrectthe
interferencebyoneormoreofthefollowingmeasures:
●Reorientorrelocatethereceivingantenna.
●Increasetheseparationbetweentheequipmentandreceiver.
●Plugtheequipmentintoanoutletonacircuitdifferentfromthattowhichthereceiverisconnected.
●Consultthedealeroranexperiencedradio/TVtechnicianforhelp.
ThisdevicecomplieswithPart15ofthe47CFRrulesandwithRSS‐210ofIndustryCanada.Operationofthis
deviceissubjecttothefollowingconditions:(1)Thisdevicemaynotcauseharmfulinterference,and(2)this

frequency.
2. Thepowersupplycordisintendedtoserveasthedisconnectdevice.Thesocket‐outletmustbeinstallednearthe
equipmentandbeeasilyaccessible.
3. Toreducetheriskofshock,allopeningsshouldbecoveredduringnormaloperationoftheequipment.
4. Useonlyplugsandcordageforconnectionofthepowersupplytoprimarypowerthatmeetsthesafetyandregulatory
requirementsinthecountryofuse.
