3. Before first sailing
Before first sailing coupe things need to be done. Those are connected with mast
preparation.
D. Halyards
To prevent halyards from being destroyed in transport those hane not been fixed in the
mast. There are three halyards in total:
jib –red
main sail –white or black
genaker –blue or black
Halyards need to be introduced by smal white ropes that are fixe in mast.
Jib halyard need to be feed through block above exit slot and the rope need to be
knotted to the block.
Right and wrong halyard lead.

Main halyard need to be knotted on top of the mast.
E. Spreaders
Spreaders need to be unpacked and the end tips need to be fixed. Initial setting of the
length is 4th pin.
Spreaders are fixe to the mast as show below by means of screw an one pin. To fix the
screw you need screwdriver and key no 8.

7

Shrouds are fixe through spreaders on the whole marked with inscription 3.0
TIP: Tape all the screws and pins. It prevents tearing genaker and also prevents screws
from unscrewing.
4. Raising the mast
After unpacking the boat from the covers it is helpful to choose flat not dusty spot and leave
the cockpit empty.

Before rising make sure that all shrouds are fixe at their bases and the halyards are not
tangled. Next we rise the mast to upward position.
Second person can enter the cockpit to help get heel locked in its step. Take care that the
mast is all the time in upward position.

Next fix the main shrouds with “fast-pins” to adjusters that were previously attached to the
boat. The forestay is attached to the block on the bow of the boat with shackle.
Next fix the short shrouds to the small adjuster. Above you can see the base shroud
position.
The top shrouds are to be attached with triple blocks with the cleat that is attached to mast
base. The triple blocks control tension of the top shrouds.

To introduce the rig tension to main shrouds and forestay tide the triple block on the
starboard side.
5. Attaching gennaker pole
Lead the gennaker pole through the slides on the bow of the boat.
Gennaker pole is equipped with two ropes –tack line (lead through the pole) and the
launching line –fixe to the whole at the end of the pole. Tack line is fixed with the shackle to
heel step.
Tack line controls at the same time how far the pole can be launched. The correct
dimension is 310cm from front side of the mast to the end of the launched pole.

6. Attaching the boom
Boom is being attached with a pin. With similar pin gnav is being attached. Please read
Selden’s note for correct gnav orientation.
Tide gnav’s control line to single block system. The control rope of the system is jammed
with swivel block behind main sheet jammer.
Tide a knot on the main sheet to the U-bolt at the end of the boom. Next lead the sheet
through “flying” block, block at the end of the boom, through straps, block in middle of the
boom and finally through the ratchet block with cleat at the deck.

7. Hoisting the sails
A. Jib
Attach the jib halyard to head of the sail with shackle. Attach the front leach of the sail
with straps. The tack of the sail is attached with jib cunningham as shown below. The jib
cuningham is finally tide to shackle at the line that controls the rig tension, which can be
found in middle of the distance between bow and triple blocks. Jib cuningham controls
how high is the jib set.

B. Main
Enter clew slide into boom groove. Next lead the outhaul line through clew eye as shown
below. Finish the outhaul with figure eight knot which has to be hooked inside the boom.
Tide main cuningham around tack of the main.
Attach the main halyard to the head with the shackle.

C. Genaker
Tide the tack line to tack of the sail (marked with „TACK”). Note that there should be a
plastic ball attached to tack line.
Genaker halyard should be tide to head of the sail (marked with „HEAD”).
Next pull the other end of the halyard through both dropping patches placed in the
middle of the sail. At the end tide figure eight knot.

Finally attach sheets to clew of the sail (marked with „CLEW”)
TIP: Before you launch the boat on the water hoist the sail to check if the ropes not
cross each other. It is also useful to set the genaker this way that it will be hoisted on the
starboard tack.
8. Attaching foils
Before you go sailing we recommend hooking your dagger board on its hook. It prevents
dagger board from falling uncontrolled into water. After slipping your boat put the dagger
boars into its case and hook it back.
When you attach the rudder check if the metal clip that prevents it from fall out when you
are capsized is working correctly (it is not bent, etc).

9. Just before you go
Check if all inspection hatches and bungs are closed.
If the wind force and direction allows you –you can hoist main and jib.
You are ready to go!
10.Launching
Before you go, check wind force and direction. If the wind is too heavy or there is a risk that
your main sail will be filled with wind during launching it is worth to concider launching
without your main up. Then you will sail away with the jib only, head up and hoist the main
later on the free water.
No matter if you launch on the slip way or from the beach go far enough with your trolley
that the boat can touch the water. Hold your trolley and push the boat into water. Next one
person can jump in, lower dagger board and rudder. If the water is not deep enough sail
away with partially lowered foils and lower fully them later. Next cleat the rudder line and
hook dagger board shock cord.
HAVE A NICE SAILING!
11.Sailing
Your Nautica 450 is a dinghy and as such it sails best flat. This should be your major
rule when sailing.

18
Nautica Boats sp. z.o.o. tel. 58 350 85 95
Ul. Wiolinowa 11 tel. 501 497 366
80-298 Gdańsk fax. 58 732 23 63
A. Sailing upwind
In mid wind conditions the crew should hike fully and the main should be trimmed so
the boom is in the middle. As the wind picks up you should add more cunnigham
(rope that controls front leach) and more outhaul. When you have outhaul and
cunnighum at its max position, the next step is to ease main sheet. Remember ther
you should also have some gnav applied. As a rule of the thumb you can start with
that you have enough gnav when you sail up wind with your main trimmed well and
you take the lose line from gnav control line.
In light air all of your control lines should be eased. The boat should be slightly
heeled to the leeward to reduce leeway.
Optimum trim for jib sheet is that you ease it 5cm from it being maximum tide.
B. Tacking
Your Nautica 450 is a boat of great manuvrouabilty. To make a tack you do not have
to push the rudder all the way. Using all the rudder there is will decrease your speed,
will make your tack extremely fast and you will find yourself sailing a reach
afterwards. Therefore to make a tack push your rudder 10-20 deg(depending on your
speed). Ease the jib, slightly ease main sheet, jump to the other side, take the jib in,
wait until your boat will pick some speed and take main in.
In light air remember to have some gnav tension. This will help you to flick the
battens in your full battened main.
C. Sailing downwind
Efficient Sailing downwind takes appropriate judgment of boat speed and wind angle.
It needs experience so train Sailing with genaker frequently. In light wind luffing does
not make significant speed differences so sail as low as possible until your genaker
is filled with wind. The crew should sit on the windward to have a good view on the
sail and the helmsmen to leeward.
As the wind picks up the chances to plane occurs. It pays off to luff to initiate
planning.
In heavy airs you should not have trouble to initiate planning so your main
consideration should be sailing flat. In wind squalls ease the main and genaker sheet
and bear off! Remember that even slight move of your rudder makes rapid changes
in sailing direction. In heavy wind both crew members should be hiking out.
During sailing with genaker the communications between crew members is
especially important. The crew has a great feeling of wind pressure through genaker
sheet and should inform helmsmen who should change the course to the new wind.
When Sailing downwind your workhorse is the genaker so the crew should focus on
genaker trim and it is up to helmsmen to control the heel of the boat with his weight
and the main sail trim.

80-298 Gdańsk fax. 58 732 23 63
D. Gybing
Gybing with genaker are far easier than once with traditional spinnaker and resemble
tacking a bit.
Gybes are done best when boat travels at her maximum speed, so the pressure on
the sails is smallest. Therefore you should gybe from reach to reach.
When gybe begins crew should fully ease genaker and start sheeting on the other
side. Genaker sheet is quite long so sheet in fast. The helmsman should gybe the
main at the same time.
In heavy wind right after gybing the main both crew members should jump to the
other side to hike. Next step is to gybe the jib.
In light air don’t forget to have a bit tension in gnav, which will help you to flip the
battens.
E. Capsizing
Capsizes happen even to best sailors therefore those should be also a part of your
training.
After capsizing Lower your gennaker (if it was up).
Capsize 90 degrees
The key to right your boat is to jump on the daggerboard. If you havn’t felt overboard
just go there. To right the boat it needs just one person on the daggerboard. The
second person can just sit onboard or help.
If you have felt overboard wait until the boat is fully capsized –it is easier to enter the
daggerboard then.
Capsize 180 degrees
Get yourself on the bottom of the boat, stand on the edge of the boat, grab
daggerboard and pull. You can also fish out the main sheet and pull it. When the
boat starts to righted jump on the daggerboard. And proceed as if it would be
capsized 90 degrees.
12.After sailing
a. Drop the SAILS. Leaving the boat with sails up can cause it falling over.
b. Check if ther is no water inside the boat. Open the back hatch and bunge. Heel the boat
to the stern. There are number fo reasons the water can find its way to inside of the
boat. One of those can be improperly closed hatch or used up sealing. Afterwards leave
the bunge open –it allows the hull to be ventilated and temperatures to be equaled.

c. Ease the rig tension system. Leaving the boat with the rig eased prolongs the life not
only of the hull but also of the hull itself.
13.Other tips
Storing of the sails
Sails of Nautica 450 are designed to be rolled. They shouldn’t be folded.
Main sheet
Tide the figure eight knot on the main sheet, so at its maximum ease the boom do not
touches the shrouds.
Genaker
Genaker should be stored at the dry place.
Top cover
After sailing it is good to use your top cover so the dust and dirt cannot damage your
blocks.
Cleaning
Rinse your boat with fresh water regularly to clean i up from dust, sand and salt (if sailed in
salty water). Stronger stains to your hull can be easily removed with polish paste.
Ropes
Check your ropes frequently. Replace those that show signs of wear or tear.
Road transport
During transport check frequently strap tension. Straps should be placed through mid od
hull and through bow. Trolley should be fitted on a trailer’s axle.
Check if the mast and other equipment is securely fastened before you start your journey.
Your trolley should be fastened on the hook of towing vehicle according to instructions
provided with hook fitting. Additionally each trailer has a security wire, which should be
attached to hook as well.
Before you start towing check if all lights fo trailer are functional.
Other tips
Do not rise your mast near overhead cables
Tape all bolts
Frequently tide all shackles, bolts and screws
Tape all edges near genaker area
Frequently check if all battens are fixed at their pockets.
