Step1
Removethefollowing parts beforeyou continue:
•(Rechargeable-) Battery-Pack
•Stylus
•Memory-and Dummy-Cards
•Display-Lid
Put yourNewton™face down on asoftsurface to avoid scratcheson thedis-
play.
Step2
Removeall screws markedwith red circles.
Liftoffthebottomcover.Startatthe
PCMCIA-Slots.
Both parts ofthecoverareheld together with
littleplasticclips.You'llfind afewverytight
clips in thearea wherethestylus-holder is
located.
Tilt thelower housing diagonallyupwards
away.Aresistancestronger asusualin this
placeis normal.
Step3
Removeall componentsmarked yel-
low.
Tounplug thewhiteribbon-cable,
you haveto unlocktheconnectorby
using alittlescrewdriver.
Do not twistorbend thatcable-it‘s
theconnection betweenthe
logic-boardand thedisplay.
Pull all plugs marked blue out of
theirsockets (carefully!).The grey
wire (connects themicrophone)is held in littleplastic-clips.Toremovethe
wire,press carefully (with yourscrewdriver) on theclips whilepulling out the
wire.
Theyotherwiseloosetheiradhesivewhichkeepsthemin place.
Do not pullatthewires!Theyotherwisecanremove‚themselves‘in the
mostunfavorablecaseout oftheplug.
Memorize thepositionsoftheplugsand markthepositionsifneccessary.
Removethescrews thataremarked red.Theleftmostonekeepsthetop partof
thebatterycasein place, theother fourattachthestylus holder.

Removethesylus-holderand the
blackstylus-clip (markedin yel-
low).
Thepicture shows thepositionsof
thecomponents,whichwereremo-
vedin step3 (yellow lines).
Removethescrews marked red
next.Notethedifferent typesof
screws.Notethedifferent lenght
and threadofthescrews (theywill
damagetheNewton™ifscrewed
intothewrong hole).
Openthebattery-box by carefully
using aknife.Startatthesidewith
theopening forthebattery.
Step5
Removethespring forthebattery-pack.
Thespring is reallystrong,becareful.
Theplastic-parts wichholdthespring in placeareveryfragile.There‘sno
wayto put thespring backiftheholderis damaged.
Step6
TheLogic-Boardis held withthelatch
marked blue,shown in theupper area of
theimage.
Lifttheboardstartingatthebattery-hol-
der whileunlocking thelatchcarefully.
Makesure thatthePCMCIA-CardSlots
liftalso.
Don'tremovetheboardnow.Thiswillbe
donein thenext step.

Becarefuland attentious whileperforming thisstep.
You haveto separatetheconnection betweenthe
logic-boardand digitizer.
Theconnector(markedwith red arrow)is on the
other sideoftheboard,right below theInterconnect-
Port(Portis marked yellow in thispicture).
Lifttheboardup abitand put afinger on the
Flat-Cableforthedigitizer.Under somecircumstan-
cesthecableseemsto bepastedto theboard.
Do not touchthecontactsneither on thecablenor
on theboard.Therecognition ofpeninputwillbeirreparably damaged
otherwise.
Afterthisworkis done,theboardcanberemoved, completely.
Step8
Removeall screws marked red.They
holdtheplastik-framearound thedis-
playand theupper housing in place.
Tounscrewtheverysmallscrews
locatedin thebattery-holder you have
to usetheverysmallscrewdriver.
Tryto keepthepower switchin
place.You‘llhavesomeextra
workto put itbackin thecorrect
position.
Step9
Thedisplay-frameis held by little
plastic-latches,oneatthetop ofthe
imageand threeon theleftside,mar-
ked blue.
Themarkedspotson theleftareonly
important whenyou reassamblethe
Newton™.
Lift-offthedisplay-frame,startingat
thestylus-holder.
Becarefulto not harmthedis-
play-cable!

Thedisplayis kept in placeby thehandle(shown in
Step9)thatis marked yellow, only.
Don'tpress thehandlewithtoo muchpower.It
breakesveryfast.
Push thehandleleftwards(relativeto theimage
shown here)and liftup thedisplayby pushing itup
withafinger (usethesquareopening).
BecarefulwiththeDigitizer-Cable.Theshapeof
thecablemakesitveryfragile.Ifyou liftup thedisplaywithout care you
mayprobably tearthecableby accident.
Step11
Thewiresforthebacklight-foilarelocatedattheposition mar-
ked yellow.There'salittlenotch.Pull out thewirescarefully
beforegoingto thenext sub-step.
Pull out thefoil.
Do not touchorbend thegreencircuitboard.Do not open
thelatcheswhichholdtheboardin place.
Theconnection to thedisplaycanbedamagedin amanner
wichcannot befixedorcorrectedeasily.
The blue markings areonlyinterestingin Step14 whenyou put
thefoil backin place.
Step12
Cutthewiresoftheoriginalfoil closeto thesolderedconnection.Shortenthe
connection wiresofthereplacement foil to alength ofabout 5millimeters.
TheEL-sheetwillbedamagedifsolderedtoo hot ortoo long. Becareful!
Unisolatethewire-ends forabout 2milimeters.Tin oneofthetwo wires; keep
thetinfluid and maketheconnection withtheconnectorofthereplacement foil.
Theconnectoris madeofverythincopperwhichwillheatup veryfast.
Forthermalcompensationusethepliersand picktheconnectorwhereitcomes
out ofthelamination.Thisensures,thatmostofthesoldering-heatis guided
intothepliersinsteadofcausing harmto thefoil.
Continuewiththesecond wire thesameway. Don'tcare about thecolorofthese
wires-it'snot neededbecausethefoil is drivenby alternating current (ac).
Usesomeinsulating tapeto protectthecontactsagainst shortcircuits.

Put thefoil backbehind thedisplay.Rememberthelatchesmarked blue from
Step12.Thefoil mustfit behind them!
Ifthere'ssomedustbetweenfoil and displayyou'llhaveto cleanthearea
first by using alint free cloth.Do not useany chemicals.Otherwiseyou'll
see darkspotsifthebacklightis on.
Put thewiresbackintothenotchshown in Step12 (yellow).
Step14
ReplacethecapacitorC121 whichis marked magenta withtheone
includedin thereplacement kit.
Only ifthecapacitoris replacedthefoil willbedrivenwiththe
samefrequencyastheoriginalone.
Byreplacingthecapacitoryou'llreducetherisk to getflickering
effectswithmoving imageson thedisplayin someenvironments
(depending on theusedlighting-technology)
Another effectis thatthefoil willshinebrighter(about 5%)withthe
newcapacitor.
Thecorrectposition ofthecapacitor:Theshapeofthecapacitor-foot and the
printedshapeon theboardmustmatch!
Step15
ReassambleyourNewton™by doingtheabovesteps in backwards order. Make
sure to placethecablesin theircorrectpositionsin orderto avoid squeezing or
sheering thembetweenthehousing-parts.
