Description
The SP 4X i both a co metic and
performance rede ign of the SP 4G
loud peaker y tem. Thi high power
handling, two-way loud peaker y tem i
compri ed of a 15" BWX woofer with a
Kevlar impregnated cone and an RX22
compre ion driver coupled to a CH 941
con tant directivity horn. Thi unit can be
driven in full-range mode imply by
plugging into the 1/4" phone jack on the
input plate. A thru-only 1/4" phone jack
connector i al o provided to allow a
econd loud peaker to be connected
without making a cable run back to the
amplifier. A Neutrik Speakon connector i
provided a an input for biamp operation.
The trapezoidal de ign of the enclo ure
allow array to be con tructed much
more ea ily than it would be u ing a
rectangular haped box. Thi hape al o
greatly reduce the build-up of tanding
wave on the in ide of the enclo ure.
Thi en ure a minimum of mid-ba and
mid-range coloration of the reproduced
ound due to the cabinet. The SP 4X i
con tructed of 3/4" OSB and covered with
Peavey’ durable black carpet. Polymer
corner are al o a part of the unit to
provide added protection to the enclo ure.
A powder-coated expanded, metal grille
cover the lower part of the front of the
enclo ure to protect the low frequency
driver from unfore een accident .
A voicing witch on the input cup
allow for the election of two different
re pon e etting for the loud peaker
y tem. The normal po ition will yield a
more flat re pon e. The EQ po ition will
have decrea ed output in the mid-range
and upper mid-range area . Thi po ition
may be preferred for ome type of
program material. The re pon e curve for
each po ition i given in figure 1.
Sound Guard III i the rede ign of
Peavey’ proprietary circuit for high
frequency driver protection for the new
RX22 compre ion driver. Thi i an
integral part of the cro over for the SP
4X. The input ignal i routed through the
Sound Guard III circuit in both full-range
and biamp mode of operation. When the
high frequency drive level to the SP 4X
exceed a predetermined thre hold the
Sound Guard III circuit in engaged. The
effect that thi ha i to ubtly decrea e
the ignal level going to the RX22 o that
it will not be damaged due to long-term
overpowering. Short duration tran ient
will not be attenuated by Sound Guard III
and have the po ibility to damage the
RX22. The Sound Guard III circuit i a
dynamic circuit that will attenuate the
ignal more the larger the ignal i , very
imilar to a compre or. Thi i
accompli hed through the u e of a
pecially elected dynamically re i tive
light bulb. If the bulb in your Sound Guard
III hould ever burn out, a replacement
may be obtained from an Authorized
Peavey Service Center. However, if a
Peavey replacement bulb i not readily
available, a Sylvannia SK3 bulb may be
located at variou loud peaker or
electronic part tore .
Frequency Response
Thi mea urement i u eful in
determining how accurately a given unit
reproduce an input ignal. The frequency
re pon e of the SP 4X i mea ured at a
di tance of 1-meter u ing a 1 Watt (into
the nominal impedance) wept- ine input
ignal. A hown in figure 1, the elected
driver in the SP 4X combine to give a
mooth frequency re pon e from 51 Hz —
16 kHz.
Power handling
There are many different approache
