General Electric Gardening Tool Safety Warnings – Personal Safety
Stay alert, be aware of your surroundings, watch what you are doing and use common
sense when operating a power tool. Do not use a power tool while you are tired or
under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or medication. A moment of inattention while
operating a power tool may result in serious personal injury.
Use personal protective equipment. Always wear eye protection.
Protective equip-
ment such as dust mask, non-skid safety shoes or boots, sturdy gloves, durable long
pants, long sleeve shirt and hearing protection will reduce the risk of personal injuries.
Prevent unintentional starting. Ensure the switches are in the o-position before
connecting the battery to the power tool or plugging it into the power supply. Never
pick up or carry the power tool with your finger on the trigger switch. Carrying power
tools with your finger on the switch or energizing power tools that have the switch on
invites accidents.
Remove any adjustment key or wrench before turning the power tool on.
A wrench or
a key left attached to a rotating part of the power tool may result in personal injury.
Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times.
This enables better
control of the power tool in unexpected situations.
Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewellery. Keep your hair, clothing and
gloves away from moving parts.
Loose clothing, jewellery or long hair can be caught in
moving parts.
If devices are provided for the connection of dust extraction and collection facilities,
ensure these are connected and properly used. Use of dust collection can reduce dust
related hazards.
Do not force the tool. Use the correct tool for the application.
The correct power tool
will do the job better and safer when used at the rate for which it was designed.
Do not use a power tool if the switch does not turn it on or o.
Any power tool that
cannot be controlled using the switch is dangerous and must be repaired.
Remove the battery from the power tool or the plug from the power source before
making any adjustments, replacing or repairing parts, cleaning the tool, leaving the
tool idle or unattended, transporting or storing the tool.
Such preventive safety
measures reduce the risk of starting the power tool accidentally.
Store idle power tools out of the reach of children and do not allow persons
unfamiliar with the power tool or these instructions to operate the power tool. Power
tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained users.
Maintain power tools. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of
parts and any other condition that may aect the power tool’s operation. If
damaged, have the power tool repaired before use.
Many accidents are caused by
poorly maintained power tools
Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly maintained cutting tools with sharp
cutting edges are less likely to bind and are easier to control.

Keep all parts of the body away from the saw chain when the chainsaw is operating.
Before you start the chainsaw, make sure the saw chain is not contacting anything. A
moment of inattention while operating chainsaws may cause an entanglement of your
clothing or body with the saw chain.
Always hold a chainsaw with your right hand on the rear handle and your left hand on
the front handle. Holding the chainsaw with a reversed hand configuration increases the
risk of personal injury and should never be done.
Hold the chainsaw by insulated gripping surfaces only because the saw chain may
contact hidden wiring or its own cord. Saw chains contacting a live wire may make
exposed metal parts of the chainsaw live and could give the operator a shock.
Wear safety glasses and hearing protection. Further protective equipment for head,
hands, legs, and feet must be worn. Adequate protective clothing will reduce personal
injury by flying debris or accidental contact with the saw chain.
Do not operate a chainsaw in a tree. Operation of a chainsaw while up a tree may result
in personal injury.
Always keep proper footing and operate the chainsaw only when standing on fixed,
secure and level surface. Slippery or unstable surfaces such as ladders, may cause a loss
of balance or control of the chainsaw.
When cutting a limb that is under tension, be alert for spring-back. When the tension in
the wood fibers is released the limb under tension may strike the operator and/or throw
the chainsaw out of control.
Use extreme caution when cutting brush and saplings. The slender material may catch
the chainsaw and be whipped toward you or pull you o balance.
When transporting or storing the chainsaw always fit the guard bar cover. Proper
handling of the chainsaw will reduce the likelihood of accidental contact with the moving
saw chain.
Always use two hands when operating the chainsaw.
Contact of the guide bar tip with any object should be avoided. Tip contact may cause
the guide bar to move suddenly upward and backward, which may cause serious injury.
Follow instructions for lubricating, chain tensioning and changing accessories. Improp-
erly tensioned or lubricated chain may either break or increase chance for kickback.
Keep handles dry, clean, and free from oil and grease. Greasy, oily handles are slippery
causing loss of control.
SPECIFIC PRUNING SAW SAFETY RULES
7
SERVICE
Have your power tool or charger serviced by a qualified repair person using only
identical replacement parts.
This will ensure that the safety of the power tool or
charger is maintained.
Use the power tool and accessories in accordance with these instructions, taking into
account the working conditions and the work to be performed. Use of the power tool
for operations different from those intended could result in a hazardous situation.
Hold power tools by the insulated gripping surfaces when performing an operation
where the cutting tool may contact hidden wiring or its own cord. Contact with a “live”
wire will make exposed metal parts of the tool “live” and shock the operator.

5240-051
20V MAX LIION CORDLESS PRUNING SAW
8
WARNING: Kickback may occur when the moving chain contacts with an object
at the upper portion of the tip of the guide bar or when the wood closes in and
pinches the saw chain in the cut. Contact at the upper portion of the tip of the guide
bar can cause the chain to dig into the object and stop the chain for an instant. The
result is a lightening fast reverse reaction which kicks the guide bar up and back
toward the operator. If the saw chain is pinched along the top of the guide bar, the
guide bar can be driven rapidly back toward the operator. Either of these reactions
can cause loss of saw control which can result in serious injury. Do not rely exclusively
upon the safety devices built into the saw. As a chainsaw user, you should take several
steps to keep your cutting jobs free from accident or injury.
• Maintain a firm grip, with thumbs and fingers encircling the chainsaw handles, with
both hands on the saw and position your body and arm to allow you to resist kickback
forces. Kickback forces can be controlled by the operator if proper precautions are
taken. Do not let go of the chainsaw.
• Do not overreach and do not cut above shoulder height. This helps prevent
unintended tip contact and enables better control of the chainsaw in unexpected
situations.
• Only use replacement bars and chains specified by the manufacturer. Incorrect
replacement bars and chains may cause breakage and/or kickback.
• Follow the sharpening and maintenance instructions for the saw chain. Decreasing
depth gauge height can lead to increased kickback.
• With a basic understanding of kickback, you can reduce or eliminate the element of
surprise. Sudden surprise contributes to accidents.
• The bar and the sprocket cover are fitted correctly.
• The chain has been sharpened and tensioned in accordance with the instruc
tions provided.
Before starting work, check that the pruning saw is in proper working order and that
its condition complies with the safety regulations. Check that:
Do not start the pruning saw with the chain cover installed on it. Starting the pruning
saw with the chain cover installed on it may cause the chain cover to be thrown off
forward resulting in personal injury and damage to objects around the operator.
Cut wood only. Do not use chainsaw for purposes not intended. For example, do not
use chainsaw for cutting plastic, masonry, or non-wood building materials. Use of the
chainsaw for operations different than intended could result in a hazardous situation.
Wear safety glasses and hearing protection. Further protective equipment for head,
hands, legs, and feet is recommended. Adequate protective clothing will reduce
personal injury by flying debris or accidental contact with the saw chain.

4. Remove the sprocket cover then remove the saw chain and guide bar from the chain
saw body (Fig.6-7).
To install the saw chain, perform the following steps:
(1) Check the direction of the saw chain. Match the direction of the saw chain with that
of the mark on the chain saw body.
(2) Fit one end of the saw chain on the top of the guide bar.
(3) Fit the other end of the saw chain around the sprocket, then attach the guide bar to
the chain saw body, aligning the hole on the guide bar with the pin on the chain saw
body.
5. Insert the protrusion on the sprocket cover to the chain saw body, and then close the
cover so that the bolt and pins on the chain saw body meet their counterparts on the
cover (Fig.8).
(1) Tighten the knob to secure the sprocket cover, and then loosen it slightly for
tension adjustment. Do not fully tighten the bar retaining knob until the chain tension
has been adjusted.

WARNING: The saw chain is not yet tensioned.
NOTE: New saw chains will stretch. Check the chain tension frequently when first used
and tighten when the chain becomes loose around the guide bar.
WARNING: Maintain proper chain tension always.
A loose chain will increase the risk of kickback. A loose chain may jump out of guide
bar groove. This may injure the operator and damage the chain. A loose chain will
cause chain, bar, and sprocket to wear rapidly.
Do not tighten the saw chain too much. Excessively high tension of saw chain may
cause breakage of saw chain, wear of the guide bar and breakage of the adjusting dial.
For safety and to reduce wear, chain tension needs to be verified and adjusted
regularly or after 10 minutes of continued use, to compensate for changes in wear and
temperature.
(1) Place the pruning saw on any suitable flat surface.
(2) Loosen the bar retaining knob a bit to loosen the sprocket cover slightly.
(3) Lift-up the guide bar tip slightly and adjust the chain tension. Turn the adjusting
screw clockwise to tighten, turn it counterclockwise to loosen. Tighten the saw chain
until the lower side of the saw chain fits in the guide bar rail as illustrated (Fig.9), or until
the chain can be lifted off the guide bar and the drivelink is within the rail of the guide
bar.
NOTE: The chain should rotate freely and be free of kinks.
ADJUSTING SAW CHAIN TENSION
NOTE: Chain life and cutting capacity depend on optimum lubrication. Therefore, the chain
should be oiled before operation.
IMPORTANT : It is important to use bar and chain lubricant that is formulated to perform
over a wide temperature range with no dilution required. Do not use dirty, used or
otherwise contaminated oil. Damage may occur to the bar or chain.
1. Switch o the pruning saw and remove the battery.
2. Place the pruning saw on a level surface with the sprocket cover facing up.
3. Clean the Guide Bar and saw chain with a soft brush or solvent.
4. Apply multifunctional oil in area between the guide bar and saw chain.
5. The frequency of lubrication is dependent on the frequency of use. Initially, if adequate
oil has been applied to the saw chain, the oil will splatter on the wood that is being cut.

WARNING: The first time user should, as a minimum practice, do cutting logs on
a sawhorse or cradle.
WARNING: Secure round pieces against rotation.
WARNING: Keep all parts of the body away from the saw chain when the motor
is operating.
WARNING: Hold the pruning saw firmly when the motor is running.
WARNING: Do not overreach. Always keep proper footing and balance.
Bring the pruning saw body into contact with the branch to be cut before switching on.
Otherwise, it may cause the guide bar to wobble, resulting in injury to operator. Saw the
wood to be cut by just moving it down by using the weight of the pruning saw.
If you cannot cut the timber right through with a single stroke:
Apply light pressure to the handle and continue sawing and draw the pruning saw back
a little.

PRUNING TREES
NOTE: Never toss or drop the tool.
NOTE: Do not cover the vents of the tool.
When cutting thick branches, first make a shallow undercut and then make the finish cut
from the top.
