FOREWORD
We wish you a great deal of enjoyment and every success with your new TERRAPIN X.
This rangefinder emits invisible infrared impulses that are harmless to the eyes and
uses an integrated microprocessor to calculate the distance to an object from the
reflected signal component. Equipped with a digital magnetic compass and inclino-
meter, it is capable to determine direction and inclination angle to the object measured.
Furthermore, it is able to calculate the equivalent horizontal range.
TERRAPIN X features an outstanding optics with 8× magnification, ensuring a reliable
observation even under difficult conditions. Plus, it is robust, easy to handle and ope-
rate.
To ensure that you get the best out of this high-quality and versatile laser rangefinder,
we recommend reading these instructions first.

DISPOSAL OF ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT
(Applies within the EU, and for other European countries with segregated
waste collection systems).
This device contains electrical and/or electronic components and must
therefore not be disposed of in general household waste!
Instead, it should be disposed of at a recycling collection point provided
by the local authority. This costs you nothing. If the device contains
standard or rechargeable batteries, these must be removed first and also
be disposed of in line with relevant regulations.

your local waste collection company, or in the store where you purchased

Limitations of use
The device must not be used in the vicinity of sensitive electrical equipment, strong
electro-magnetic fields or explosive environment.
Inappropriate use
àUse of the device without prior knowledge of the user manual and safety notices.
àDistance measurements on highly reflective objects, mirrors, or mirror-like surfaces
as they may damage the laser rangefinder.
àConduct any procedure other than mentioned in the user manual.
àChanges and modifications to the device
àUse of accessories not expressly approved by Safran Vectronix AG.
àUse outside of the specifications mentioned in the technical data.
àOpen, disassemble, assemble or repair the device
àUse after misappropriation.
àUse of the device with obviously recognizable damages or defects.
Obligation of the Owner
The owner of the product must ensure that
àthe users are fully aware of the safety instructions.
àthe users are qualified according to the local authorities directives, understand
these directions and adhere to them.
àthe device, accessories and packing material is kept away from children as it
contains small parts that could be swallowed.
àthe misuse of certain accessories will be avoided as it may cause risk of
suffocation.

Avoiding storage and transport damage
àWhen not in use, always keep the device dry and in its pouch.
àRemove the battery prior to prolonged storage. Battery leakage can damage the
device.
àObserve the permissible storage temperatures.
àDo not expose the device to strong mechanical shocks or abrupt temperature
transitions during transport (moisture condensation). Use the pouch and transit
case or equivalent packaging for shipment.
Avoiding measurement errors
àAlways check the plausibility of the measurement values displayed. Respect the
factors affecting the measurement accuracy. Always perform test measurements
after the device has been exposed to rough handling (e.g. vibration, drop) and before
carrying out important measurement tasks.
àDistance errors may occur when measuring on or through glass or onto highly
reflective surfaces such as road signs, mirrors or water surfaces.
àVerify the correctness of the transmitted data.
Blinding hazard
Do not look into powerful light sources (e.g. sun) with the device. Although the product
is Class 1, do not point at others or yourself while operating the push button or while
the display is on.

Physical injury hazard
àDo not place the device on a vehicle parcel-shelf or dashboard due to risk of injury
when braking.
àThe carrying strap can snag and cause strangulation or neck injury e.g. in case of a
fall. Check the carrying strap at regular intervals and replace it if damaged.
àTake care when holding the device up to the face to use to avoid injury to the eye or
surrounding tissue.
àUsing the device while walking increases the risk of injury for the user and others.
àDo not use damaged or leaking batteries. If you come into contact with the
electrolyte, wash the affected area with water and soap. If in contact with the
eye, flush eye with water and seek medical advice. If swallowed, consult a doctor
immediately.

ATTACHING THE NECK STRAP
XFeed the small loop on the neck strap through the eyelet on the housing of the
device.
XThread the end of the strap through the small loop and pull tight, so that the
resulting loop is securely around the eyelet on the housing.

CHANGING THE BATTERY
WARNING
àBatteries must not be put in a fire, heated above 100 °C (212 °F),
recharged, taken to pieces or broken apart.
àDo not handle or use damaged or leaking batteries.
àUsed batteries may not be disposed of as normal, household waste as
they contain toxic materials that are harmful to the environment.
àTo ensure that they are properly recycled, they should be returned to
the dealer or disposed of as special waste (at a collection point).
àCold conditions impair the battery performance. At low temperatures
the device should be kept as close to the body as possible and a new
battery should be fitted.
àIf the device will not be used for a long period, the battery should be
removed.
àBatteries should be stored in a cool dry place.
The device is powered by one cylindrical 3 Volt lithium battery type CR123.

XOpen the battery compartment cover (1) by turning it counter-clockwise using a
coin or similar.
XRemove the discharged battery.
XInsert the battery so that the positive end goes in first (as shown by the markings in
the battery compartment).
XClose the battery compartment cover again by turning it clockwise using a coin or
similar.
Low battery indicator
The device monitors the condition of the battery. If the display shows “Lo”, this indica-
tes that the battery is almost used up. You can still make a small number of measure-
ments. It is recommended to replace the battery at the next occasion.

USE WITH AND WITHOUT GLASSES
Users who do not wear glasses
can leave the rubber eyecup
raised (Figure A).
This position gives the correct
distance between the device and
the eye. When using the device
with glasses, the rubber eyecup
should be folded down (Figure B).

DIOPTER COMPENSATION
Diopter compensation enables you to adjust the sharpness
of the reticule to the optimum value for you.
XAim the device at a distant object and adjust the reticule
until it has optimum sharpness by turning the eyecup.
You can read the set value on the “+” or “–” scale on the
eyecup. Diopter compensation is available for vision defects
of up to ± 3 diopters.

BASIC INFORMATION ON OPERATION AND DISPLAY
Operation
The device is operated entirely by one push button
only. The button operation is indicated by the following
symbols:
press and keep it pressed

press and release the button quickly (click)

press and hold the button for the indicated time (e.g. >2 seconds)
Hold the device steady during measurement.
Without any further interaction, after a while, the display goes off and the device goes
into sleep mode.

FACTORS AFFECTING THE AZIMUTH ACCURACY
The device has a digital compass that works similar to a magnetic compass.
Metal objects, magnetic fields and electronic devices (e.g. tablet / smartphone) can
cause errors in directional readings. Non-magnetic metals and alloys do not affect the
compass readings.
XObserve the minimum safe distances shown above when making azimuth
measurements.
