1 - SAFETY INFORMATION
This fi replace has been tested to and complies with ANSI Z21.88a-2009·CSA 2.33a-2007·CSA P.4.1-02 “VENTED
GAS FIREPLACE HEATERS” by Underwriters Laboratories, Northbrook, IL. Installation must conform with local
building codes or in the absence of local building codes, with the National Fuel Gas Code, ANSIZ223.1/NFPA 54
- Current Edition, or the Natural or Propane Installation Code, CSAB149.1
• Installation and repair should be done only by a qualifi ed service person. The appliance should be inspected by a
qualifi ed service person before use. Annual inspection by a qualifi ed service person is required to maintain warranty.
More frequent cleaning may be required due to excessive lint from carpeting, bedding materials, etc. It is imperative
that control compartments, burners and circulation air passageways of the appliance be kept clean.
• Children and adults should be alerted to the hazards of high surface temperatures and should stay away to avoid
burns or clothing ignition.
• Young children should be carefully supervised when they are in the same room as the appliance. Toddlers, young
children and others may be susceptible to accidental contact burns. A physical barrier is recommended if there are
at risk individuals in the house. To restrict access to a fi replace or stove, install an adjustable safety gate to keep
toddlers, young children and other at risk individuals out of the room and away from hot surfaces.
• Clothing or other fl ammable material should not be placed on or near the appliance.
• Adequate accessibility clearances for servicing and proper operation must be maintained.
• This appliance must not share or be connected to a chimney fl ue serving any other appliance.
• Keep area around the appliance clear of combustible materials, gasoline and other fl ammable vapor and liquids.
• The fl ow of combustion and ventilation air must not be obstructed.
• Due to high temperatures the appliance should be located out of traffi c and away from furniture and draperies.
• The glass front or any part removed for servicing the appliance must be replaced prior to operating the appliance.
Work should be done by a qualifi ed service technician.
• Clean glass only when cool and only with non-abrasive cleansers.
• Do not operate this appliance with the glass/frame assembly removed, cracked or broken. The glass assembly shall
only be replaced as a complete unit, as supplied by Stellar Hearth Products. Replacement of the glass assembly
must only be performed by a licensed or qualifi ed service person. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE MATERIALS.
• Do not strike or slam glass assembly.
• Any safety screen or guard removed for servicing the appliance must be replaced prior to operating the appliance.
• Under no circumstances should any solid fuel (wood, coal, paper or cardboard etc.) be used in this appliance.
• Keep burner and control compartment clean.
• Do not use this insert if any part has been under water. Immediately call a qualifi ed service technician to inspect this
appliance and to replace any part of the control system and any gas control which has been under water.

2 - COMMONWEALTH OF MASSACHUSETTS REQUIREMENTS
For all sidewall horizontally vented gas fueled equipment installed in every dwelling, building or structure used in whole or
in part for residential purposes, including those owned or operated by the Commonwealth and where the side wall exhaust
vent termination is less than (7) feet above fi nished grade in the area of the venting, including but not limited to decks and
porches, the following requirements shall be satisfi ed:
INSTALLATION OF CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTORS
At time of installation of side wall horizontally vented gas
fueled equipment, the installing plumber or gas-fi tter shall
observe that a hard wired carbon monoxide detector with
an alarm and battery back-up is installed on the fl oor level
where the gas equipment is to be installed. In addition,
the installing plumber or gas-fi tter shall observe that a
battery operated or hard wired carbon monoxide detector
is installed on each additional level of the dwelling, building
or structure served by the side wall horizontal vented
gas fueled equipment. It shall be the responsibility of the
property owner to secure the services of qualifi ed licensed
professionals for the installation of hard wired carbon
monoxide detectors.
In the event that the side wall horizontally vented gas fueled
equipment is installed in a crawl space or attic, the hard
wired carbon monoxide detector with alarm and battery
back-up may be installed on the next adjacent fl oor level.*
In the event that the requirements of this subdivision can not
be met at the time of completion of installation, the owner
shall have a period of thirty (30) days to comply with the
above requirements; provided, however, that during said
thirty (30) day period, a battery operated carbon monoxide
detector with an alarm shall be installed.
APPROVED CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTORS
Each carbon monoxide detector as required in accordance
with the above provisions shall comply with NFPA 720 and
be ANSI/UL 2034 listed and IAS certifi ed.
SIGNAGE
A metal or plastic identifi cation plate shall be permanently
mounted to the exterior of the building at a minimum of
eight (8) feet above grade directly in line with the exhaust
vent terminal for the horizontally vented gas fueled heating
appliance or equipment. The sign shall read, in print no
less the one-half inch (1/2) in size, “GAS VENT DIRECTLY
BELOW. KEEP CLEAR OF ALL OBSTRUCTIONS”.
INSPECTION
The state or local gas inspector of the side wall horizontally
vented gas fueled equipment shall not approve the installa-
tion unless, upon inspection, the inspector observes carbon
monoxide detectors and signage installed in accordance
with the provisions of 248 CMR 5.08 (2) (a) 1 through 4.
EXEMPTIONS
The following equipment is exempt from 248 CMR 5.08 (2)
(a) 1 through 4:The equipment listed in Chapter 10 entitled
“Equipment Not Required To Be Vented” in the most
current edition of NFPA 54 as adopted by the Board; and
Product Approved side wall horizontally vented gas fueled
equipment installed in a room or structure separate from
the dwelling, building or structure used in whole or in part
for residential purposes.
MANUFACTURES REQUIREMENTS
GAS EQUIPMENT VENTING SYSTEM PROVIDED
When the manufacturer of Product Approved side wall
horizontally vented gas equipment provides a venting
system design or venting system components with the
equipment, the instructions provided by the manufacturer
for installation of the equipment and the venting system
shall include:
Detailed instructions for the installation of the venting
system design or the venting system components; and a
complete parts list for the venting system design or venting
system.
MANUFACTURES REQUIREMENTS
GAS EQUIPMENT VENTING SYSTEM NOT PROVIDED
When the manufacturer of Product Approved side wall
horizontally vented gas equipment does not provide the
parts for venting the fl ue gases, but identifi es “special
venting systems”, the following requirements shall be
satisfi ed by the manufacturer:
The referenced “special venting systems” instructions shall
be included with the appliance or equipment installation
instructions and; the “special venting systems” shall be
Product Approved by the Board, and the instructions for
that system shall include a parts list and detailed Installation
instructions.
A copy of all installation instructions for all Product
Approved side wall horizontally vented gas fueled
equipment, all venting instructions, all parts lists for venting
instructions, and/or all venting design instructions shall
remain with the appliance or equipment at the completion
of the installation.
* Does not apply to the Renew Insert Series Inserts which can only
be vertically terminated.

The following requirements reference various Massachusetts and national codes not contained in this manual.

This fi replace is design certifi ed in accordance with American
National Standard/CSA Standard ANSI Z.21-88/CSA 2.33 and by
Underwriters Laboratories as a Direct Vent Gas Fireplace Heater
and shall be installed according to these instructions.
Consult your local building code agency, prior to installation, to ensure
compliance with local codes-including permits and inspections.
The fi replace insert, when installed, must be electrically grounded in
accordance with local codes or, in absence of local codes, with the
National Electric Code ANSI/NFPA 70 or Canadian Electric code,
CSA C22.1, if an external electrical source is utilized.
These models may be installed in a bedroom or bed-sitting room
in the U.S.A. and Canada.
Installation and replacement of gas piping, gas utilization equipment
or accessories and repair and servicing of equipment shall be
performed only by a qualifi ed agency. The term “qualifi ed agency”
means any individual, fi rm, corporation or company which either in
person or through a representative is engaged in and is responsible for
(a) the installation or replacement of gas piping or (b) the connection,
installation, repair or servicing of equipment, who is experienced in
such work, familiar with all precautions required and has complied
with all the requirements of the authority having jurisdiction.
State of Massachusetts: The installation must be made by
a licensed plumber or gas fi tter in the Commonwealth of
Massachusetts.
The installation must conform with local codes or, in the absence
of local codes, with the NationalFuel Gas CodeANSI Z223.1/NFPA
54* Natural Gas and Propane Installation Code, or CSA B149.1 in
Canada.*AvailablefromtheAmericanNationalStandardsInstitute,

3 - LISTING AND CODE APPROVALS
A. APPLIANCE CERTIFICATION
Any alteration of the original design, installed other than as
shown in these instructions or use with a type of gas not
shown on the rating plate is the responsibility of the person
and company making the change.
Important: All correspondence should refer to complete Model
Number, Serial Number and type of gas.
D. HIGH ALTITUDE
High Altitude
When installing this unit at an elevation above 2000 feet (in the
United States) it may be necessary to decrease the input rating by
changing the existing burner orifi ce to a smaller size. Generally,
input should be reduced 4 percent for each 1000 feet above sea
level. However, if the heating value of the gas has been reduced,
this general rule may not apply. Check with local gas utility for proper
orifi ce size identifi cation.
Canadian High Altitude
Altitude: 0-4500 feet (0-1370 m)
When installing this unit at an elevation above 4500 feet (in Canada),
check with local authorities.
Consult your local gas utility for assistance in determining the proper
orifi ce for location.
E. INSTALLER PREPARATIONS
1. Installer must leave instruction manual with owner after
installation.
2. Installer must have owner fi ll out and mail warranty card supplied
with the fi replace.
3. Installer should show owner how to start and operate the fi replace.
This direct vent gas fi replace insert is designed to operate with
all combustion air being siphoned from the outside of the building
and all exhaust gases expelled to the outside of the building. The
information contained in this manual pertains to all models and gas
control systems unless otherwise noted.
This direct vent gas fi replace insert and its components are tested
and safe when installed in accordance with this Installation Manual.
Report to your dealer any parts damaged in shipment, specifi cally
check glass condition. Do not install unit with damaged, incomplete,
or substitute parts. Read all instructions before starting installation
and follow these instructions carefully during installation to insure
maximum benefi t and safety. Failure to follow them will void your
warranty and may present a fi re hazard.
The warranty will be voided by, and the warranter disclaims any
responsibility for the following actions:
• Installation of any damaged fi replace insert or vent system
component.
• Modifi cation of the fi replace insert or direct vent system.
• Installation other than as instructed by Stellar Hearth ProductsTM.
• Improper positioning of the logs or glass door assembly.
• Installation and/or use of any component part not manufactured
or approved by manufacturer.

6 - GAS LINE SPECIFICATIONS
A. GAS CONVERSION IMPORTANT NOTES
This fi replace insert is manufactured for use with Natural Gas or LP Gas. NG and LP Gas conversion kits are available.
Natural Gas to LP Gas Converstion Kit (LPC-SM-INS and LPC-LG-INS) and LP Gas to NG Conversion Kits (NGC-SM-INS and
NGC-LG-INS are sold separately. Follow instructions found in Section 23 - or included with the conversion kits.
IMPORTANT NOTE
The effi ciency rating of this appliance is a product of thermal effi ciency rating determined under continuous operating
conditions and was determined independently of any installed system.
IMPORTANT NOTE
For high altitude installations, consult the local gas distributor or the authority having jurisdiction for
proper rating methods.
IMPORTANT NOTE
The appliance must be isolated from the gas supply piping system by closing its individual manual shut-off valve during
any pressure testing of the gas line at test pressures equal to or less than ½ psi (3.5 kPa).
IMPORTANT NOTE
The appliance and its individual shutoff valve must be disconnected from the gas supply piping system during any
pressure testing of that system at pressures in excess of ½ psi.
IMPORTANT NOTE
This fi replace is equipped with a 3/8”(10 mm) x 24” (610mm) long fl exible gas connector and manual shut-off valve. The
gas line should be run to the point of connection where the shut-off valve and fl exible gas line will connect.
IMPORTANT NOTE
A listed (and Commonwealth of Massachusetts approved) 1/2” (13 mm) T- handle manual shut-off valve and fl exible gas
connector (included) are connected to the 1/2” (13 mm) control valve inlet. If substituting for these components, please
consult local codes for compliance.
IMPORTANT NOTE
Installation of the gas line must only be done by a qualifi ed person in accordance with local building codes, if any. If not,
follow ANSI 223.1. Commonwealth of Massachusetts: Installation must be done by a licensed plumber or gas fi tter.
IMPORTANT NOTE
The conversion shall be carried out in accordance with the requirements of the provincial authorities having jurisdiction
and in accordance with the requirements on thr ANSI Z223.1 installation code.

The insert has a Flexline with shutoff valve located on the left side when facing the unit. Consult the current National Fuel Gas Code,
ANSI Z223.1 CAN/CGA-B149 (.1 or .2) installation code.
The gas lines must be checked for leaks by the installer. This should
be done with a soap solution watching for bubbles on all exposed
connections, and if unexposed, a pressure test should be made.
Never use an exposed fl ame to check for leaks. Appliance
must be disconnected from piping at inlet of control valve
and pipe capped or plugged for pressure test. Never
pressure test with appliance connected; control valve will
sustain damage!
NOTICE: The gas controls are equipped with a captured screw type
pressure test point, therefore it is not necessary to provide a 1/8"
test point up stream of the control.
When using copper or fl ex connector use only approved fi ttings.
The appliance and its individual shut off valve must be disconnected
from supply piping system during any pressure testing of that system
at test pressures in excess of 1/2 psig.
The appliance must be isolated from the gas supply piping system
by closing its individual manual shut off valve during any pressure
testing of the gas supply piping system at test pressures equal to
or less than 1/2 psig.
Attention! If one of the procedures results in pressures in excess
of 1/2 psig (14" w.c.) on the fi replace gas valve, it will result in a
hazardous condition.
Checking Manifold Pressures
Both Propane and Natural gas valves have a built-in pressure
regulator in the gas valve. Natural gas models will have a manifold
pressure of approximately 3.5" w.c. at the valve outlet with the inlet
pressure to the valve from a minimum of 5.0" w.c. for the purpose of
input adjustment to a maximum of 10.5" w.c. Propane gas models
will have a manifold pressure approximately 10.0" w.c. at the valve
outlet with the inlet pressure to the valve from a minimum of 11.0"
w.c. for the purpose of input adjustment to a maximum of 13.0" w.c.
The use of the following gas connectors is recommended:
— ANS Z21.24 Appliance Connectors of Corrugated Metal Tubing
and Fittings.
— ANS Z21.45 Assembled Flexible Appliance Connectors of Other
Than All-Metal Construction
The above connectors may be used if acceptable by the authority
having jurisdiction. The state of Massachusetts requires that a
fl exible appliance connector cannot exceed three feet in length.

Installing the Main Gas Shut-Off Valve
Each appliance should have its own manual gas shut-off valve.
A manual main gas cock should be located in the vicinity of the unit.
Where none exists, or where its size or location is not adequate,
contact your local authorized installer for installation or relocation.
Compounds used on threaded joints of gas piping shall be resistant
to the action of liquefi ed petroleum gases.

7 - VENTING INSTALLATION
1. Before beginning, remove glass door and log package from
unit. Also check to make sure there is no hidden damage
to the unit. Take a minute and plan out the gas, venting
and electrical route. It is best to start with the gas line fi rst,
followed by the chimney liner and electrical supply require-
ments.
2. Minimum fi replace opening requirements are shown on
Page 8, Section 4C of this installation manual. The fi rebrick
(refractory), glass doors, screen rails, screen mesh and log
grates can be removed from a factory built fi replace in order
to gain minimum gas insert opening requirements prior to
installing the gas fi replace insert.
3. This insert requires no hearth extensions. Combustible
material on the fl oor may be installed up to the insert. Do not
obstruct the lower louver of the insert. The original fi replace
cannot be returned to solid fuel in this condition.
4. The side walls and top structure of the fi rebox may not be
altered with the exception of removable baffl es and damp-
ers. Smoke shields, shelves and baffl es may be removed if
attached with mechanical fasteners. The original fi replace
cannot be returned to solid fuel in this condition.
5. The original specifi ed clearances of a factory-built fi replace
must be maintained, with the exception of the hearth. Clear-
ances on a masonry fi replace must be maintained at 12”
from the opening for combustible projections over 1 1/2”.
Clearances for combustible projections under
1 1/2” must be maintained at 6” from the opening per
NFPA211. Plan the surround size accordingly. A surround
must be used with the insert. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCE
CAN COMBUSTIBLE MATERIAL BE PLACED BEHIND THE
SURROUND!
6. The insert surround is tested and approved with this gas in-
sert and may cover existing air circulation vents or grilles on
the solid fuel fi replace it is installed into. If the surround does
not cover the entire ventilation grille surface, the exposed
grille area should be left open.
NOTICE: Surround panel kits have been tested and approved
to cover existing air circulation vents or grilles.
NOTICE: Cutting of sheet metal parts of a fi replace in order to
install the fi replace insert is prohibited.
7. To assure top performance, safety and effi ciency, inserts must
be installed with an approved fl ue liner as per CAN/CGA B-149
or National Fuel Code ANSI Z223 and these instructions.
NOTICE: The following statement is also provided on a sepa-
rate label plate in the instruction packet. Prior to installation
of the fi replace insert, the installer must mechanically secure
this warning plate to the inside of the fi replace for future refer-
ence as required.
8. The solid fuel fi replaces’ fl ue damper must be fully locked in
the open position or removed for installation of the gas fi re-
place insert.
9. The fi replace and fi replace chimney must be cleaned and in
good working order and constructed of noncombustible mate-
rials.
10. Make sure that all chimney cleanouts fi t properly so air cannot
leak into the chimney.
11. Install the insert without the decorative, front surround panels
attached and make all gas, venting, and electrical connec-
tions.
12. To complete the installation, install surround panel assembly.
Please refer to instructions included with the surround panel
kit.
INSTALLING THE VENT SYSTEM
Vent System Installation Precautions
Before starting installation of vent kits, the installer should read
these instructions and the Vent Kit Instructions to ensure that a
proper vent installation is completed. Consult your local Building
Codes before beginning the Installation.
WARNING
This solid fuel fi replace has been converted for use with
gas only and cannot be used for burning wood or solid
fuels unless all original parts have been replaced and the
fi replace has been reapproved by the authority having
jurisdiction.
WARNING
COMMON VENT SYSTEMS ARE PROHIBITED.
THIS GAS INSERT AND VENT ASSEMBLY MUST BE VENT-
ED TO THE OUTSIDE AND MUST NEVER BE ATTACHED TO
A CHIMNEY SERVING A SEPARATE SOLID FUEL BURNING
APPLIANCE. EACH GAS APPLIANCE MUST USE A
SEPARATE VENT SYSTEM.

7 - VENTING AND INSTALLATION
Vent System Approvals
Figure 8 shows the vent termination caps and systems approved
for use with these models. Approved vent system terminations are
labeled for identifi cation. 3-inch diameter listed fl exible aluminum
or stainless steel gas vent is used for both the incoming combustion
air and exhaust vent pipes. NO OTHER VENTING SYSTEMS OR
COMPONENTS MAY BE USED. Detailed installation instructions
are included with each vent termination kit and should be used in
conjunction with this manual.
Horizontal Venting
The vent system on this model CANNOT be terminated horizontally.
Vertical Venting
The inlet and exhaust vent pipes MUST be connected to the proper
collars on the unit AND to the termination cap or the unit will not
operate. The intake vent collar is the rear-most collar.
Note: This also pertains to vertical vent systems installed on the
outside of the building.
NOTICE: The minimum vertical vent rise is 10 feet and the
maximum vertical vent rise is 40 feet. These dimensions are
measured from the starting collars of the unit to the bottom of the
fl ashing.
NOTICE: The damper of the masonry chimney may need to be
removed to allow installation of the fl exible-vent pipe.
3.6 X 2.3 Connecting Vent Pipe
Level The Insert
Install the insert into fi replace and check for fi t. Use the leveling
legs included in the manual bag to level the insert side to side and
front to back. Remove the insert and install the venting.
Connecting The Vent Pipe
Install the 3-inch fl exible vent pipes down through the chimney.
Attach the pipe-to-cap adaptor to the termination cap and the top of
the fl exible vent pipe, then install the cap to the top of the chimney.
Remove the vent slide plate assembly from the top of the insert.
See Figure 7.2. Trim off excess venting then attach and secure
the bottom ends of the fl ex pipes to the starting collars with the
screws provided. Slide the gas insert into place, and position any
excess fl ex vent pipe back up into the chimney. Begin installation
of the insert into the fi replace opening. Align the vent slide plate
assembly with the guides located on top of the insert. Work the
insert inch by inch into the fi replace cavity as you pull forward on
the vent slide plate assembly. Do not use excessive force on the
vent slide plate. Once the vent slide plate is close to seating, install
the vent bolt through the center hole of the insert top fl ange, and
into the vent slide plate nut. Using a screw driver, tighten the bolt
until the vent slide plate is seated forward completely.

8 - VERTICAL TERMINATION
Note : If the original solid fuel chimney is shortened, refer to
Figure 8.1 for minimum vent height above the roof.
When terminating the vent cap near an exterior wall or overhang,
maintain minimum clearances as shown in Figure 8.2.
General Maintenance
Conduct an inspection of the venting system semi-annually.
Recommended areas to inspect are as follows:
1. Check areas of the venting system which are exposed to the
elements for corrosion. These will appear as rust spots or
streaks and, in extreme cases, holes. These components should
immediately be replaced.
2. Remove the cap and shine a fl ashlight down the vent. Remove
any bird nests or other foreign material.
3. Check for evidence of excessive condensate, such as water
droplets forming in the fl ex venting and subsequently dripping
out at joints or seams. Condensate can cause corrosion of caps,
pipe and fi ttings.
4. Inspect joints to verify that no pipe sections or fi ttings have been
disturbed and, consequently, loosened.

9 - SURROUND PANEL INSTALLATION
INSTALLING THE TRIM SURROUNDS
The front surround will cover over the surround backing attached to the insert fi rebox.
To attach the front surround, simply place over and in front of the backing plate such that the top return fl ange of the front surround is
slightly above the top of the backing plate, then slide down so as to engage the “J-Hooks” on the front side of the back surround into the
corresponding slots on the front surround. Press down fi rmly to ensure that the front surround is securely in place. Install the 4 screws
from the manual bag into the inside surface of the surround through the provided pilot holes.

Blowers
Two blowers are factory installed and will operate after
the fi replace insert has been turned on for 5 minutes,
providing the fan has been turned on with the remote
control.
The fan will operate for 12 minutes after the insert has
been turned off.

11 - GLASS REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
Remove the decorative front prior to glass removal.
The glass frame has two (2) tabs on the bottom and four (4) tabs
on top.
To remove the glass:
1. Using the hook tool, hook the top glass retainer through the hole
and pull forward while moving the retainer outward.
2. Repeat for the three (3) other retainers.
3. Pull the top of the glass outward and lift the glass to disengage
the lower retainers.
1. Drop the bottom tabs on the glass frame behind the bottom
glass retainers.
2. Push down and bring the top of the glass frame against the insert.
3. Using the hook tool, hook the retainer through the hole and pull
around the glass tab and in front of the tab to secure.
4. Disengage the hook tool from the glass retainer.
5. Repeat for the other three (3) retainers.

12 - OPTIONAL REFRACTORY LINER (LG-INS ONLY)
PARTS: Locate the deeper liner clips (qty. 2 )
from the parts bag.
1. Remove the grate and set aside.
2. Locate the left and right screw heads on the roof of the
fi rebox and remove.
3. Place the back liner in place.
4. Place the left liner in place and the refractory clip
against the liner. Replace the screw so the clip is held
in place.
5. Place the right liner in place and the refractory clip
against the liner. Replace the screw so the clip is held
in place.
6. Re-install the grate and proceed with the log
installation.
