1.0 Introduction
1.1 About This Manual
This manual is provided as a reference to explain the operation of the SuperFlow SF-1020i Flowbench.
An electronic PDF copy of this manual is provided on the thumb-drive sent with the SuperFlow system.
Please read the complete manual in
detail, prior to operating the machine.

1.3 Product Features

2.0 Safety Guidelines
Safety is the most important consideration when operating any machine. Operators and service personnel
should read this manual and become familiar with its content before attempting to operate this machine
or to perform service or maintenance to it. Familiarization with this manual will minimize the possibility of
accidents or injuries. Although the procedures covered in this manual have proven safe in use, SuperFlow
assumes no responsibility for personal injury or damage to equipment resulting from its applications. All
operators must be aware that there are several hazards present to anyone in the vicinity during operation.
Some of these hazards are:
• Hearing damage due to high noise levels
• Electrical shock
• Exposure to rotating parts
Always follow basic safety precautions when using this product to reduce risk of injury or damage to
equipment.
• Only authorized personnel knowledgable of the operation of the owbench should have access to
the equipment.
• Read and understand all instructions in the user guides.
• Keep the air ducts free of dust or dirt.
• Keep loose material away from the inlet and exhaust ducts.
• Always wear eye and hearing protection whenever operating.
• Use only the proper electrical sources. Ensure circuit breakers are easily accessible and have the
proper rating.
• Observe all warnings and instructions marked on the product.
• Provide re extinguishers that are rated for electrical and oils.
• Provide adequate lighting in the test area.
• Refer all service questions to qualied personnel.
• Do not remove any safety guards while the machine is in operation, and be sure the safety guards
are correctly mounted before operating the device.
• Disconnect the external power switch before opening the rear panel of the device.
• Replace the power cable if it is damaged.
• Do not store ammable materials in the vicinity of the owbench.
• Follow all local construction codes.
These are general guidelines for working with any machine. It is often helpful to prepare a safety checklist
that is distributed to all personnel who enter the test cell. Proper safety is achieved through reinforcement
and discipline.

and all residual voltage has been taken under consideration. Unqualied personnel should
never attempt electrical work.

2.2 Lockout/Tagout Procedures
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires, in addition
to posting safety warnings and barricading the work area (including, but not limited
to, control room and testing bay), that the power supply has been locked in the
OFF position or disconnected. It is mandatory that an approved lockout device
is utilized. An example of a lockout device is illustrated in "Figure 2.1: Lockout/
Tagout". The proper lockout procedure requires that the person responsible for the
repairs is the only person who has the ability to remove the lockout device.
In addition to the lockout device, it is also a requirement to tag the power control in a manner that will
clearly note that repairs are under way and state who is responsible for the lockout condition. Tagout
devices have to be constructed and printed so that exposure to weather conditions, or wet and damp
locations, will not cause the tag to deteriorate or become unreadable.
Power Test does not recommend any particular lockout device, but recommends the utilization of an
OSHA approved device (refer to OSHA regulation 1910.147). Power Test also recommends the review and
implementation of an entire safety program for the Control of Hazardous Energy (Lockout/Tagout). These
regulations are available through OSHA publication 3120.

3.0 System Overview
3.1 Overview
The SuperFlow SF-1020i owbench is designed to measure the intake airow resistance of engine cylinder
heads, manifolds, lters, or other devices. For testing, the owbench draws air into the machine through the
air pump and exits out the vent on back side of the owbench.
The SF-1020i owbench includes an industrial grade programmable logic controller (PLC) with the ability to
network with various consumer automation systems for automated control to ensure repeatable end-of-line
testing.
3.1.1 Feature Highlights

3.1.2 Options
• Flowbench Control and Software systems: SuperFlow o󰀨ers an optional HMI touch-screen
display control package or a computer system with data acquisition and control software. With a
properly congured computer system, all data is simultaneously transmitted in real time and then
PowerNet Flowbench Data Acquisition and Control software graphically displays ow data (in
English or metric units) in real time and records data for later analysis.

• Air Filter: Designed for high-contamination environments, this lter can help protect the motors and
other internal components in the SF-1020i. The washable lters are designed with low restriction to
ensure minimal e󰀨ect on capacity.
3.1.3 Calibration
Sensors are calibrated at the factory for each particular owbench. A dynamic ow calibration is performed
yielding unique ow range values for each of the ten ranges of operation. This precise calibration data is
entered into internal memory.
Calibration Kit (P/N # SF1200A-2517) required for system ow calibration.

3.1.4 Special Applications Using an SF-1020i Flowbench
Many SuperFlow owbenches are used daily to measure airow through cylinder heads, manifolds, throttle
bodies, carburetors and other components.
What can you measure on a SuperFlow SF-1020i owbench? The answer is just about anything you can
mount on the bench. Some manufacturers use the bench as a Quality Control (QC) process to quantify
catalyst materials. Other applications include mu󰀪ers and air lters. The aerospace industry also uses the
benches to maintain QC on parts for various gas turbine components. Using PowerNet Flowbench Data
Acquisition and Control software provides an easy way to compare parts by E󰀨ective Flow Area (EFA). The
software can also be used to quantify cylinder heads and manifolds with a relatively new approach.
What is the largest diameter part tested on a SuperFlow bench? Over 18 inches in diameter and 6 feet tall.
The component is for a very large gas turbine that drives a stationary electrical power generator.
Odd applications? How about natural gas control valves that control the fuel for gigantic shipboard
engines? How large? A 10,000-hp valve is considered small.
Small applications? The smallest known application is used to set the idle opening in throttle bodies where
the target is 3.5 cfm at 25"H20.

3.0 System Overview
3.3 SF-1020i Description
Air ows through the SF-1020i owbench and vents out the back of the cabinet. The test device (whatever
it is being tested) is mounted on top of the cabinet over the baseplate opening.
A test pressure meter (pressure transducer) measures the pressure or vacuum at the base of the test
device (just under the baseplate). Test pressure is the di󰀨erential pressure as measured between
atmosphere and a point just under the baseplate of the ow bench. This is essentially the total pressure
drop across whatever is being tested or bolted to the ow bench. The test pressure is set by the control
system to a standard value, for instance, 25.0" (60.0 cm) of water. The ow meter (another pressure
transducer) measures the pressure di󰀨erence across an adjustable ow orice inside the owbench. The
amount of ow is measured in cubic feet per minute (cfm).
By selecting di󰀨erent ranges, the ow meter can maintain high accuracy over a wide range of ows. The
SF-1020i has ten unique ow ranges, this insures the highest accuracy ow measurements from near 0 to
1000 cfm (0 to 470 lps).
3.3.1 Baseplate
The SF-1020i owbench baseplate is 21 inches in
diameter with a 5-inch diameter airow orice in the
middle. Four ¼-20 threaded bolt holes spaced 5
inches apart in a square pattern around the airow
orice secure the test device to the plate. Adapters
are available from SuperFlow for mounting a wide
variety of cylinder heads and other test devices.
For safety, cover the baseplate opening when the
owbench is not in use to prevent debris from
falling inside.

3.3.2 Test Orice Plate
The test orice that was supplied with your bench
is a test load. The 7-inch (17.8-cm) square plate
supplied with the owbench has punched holes
(not bored); one is 1.875 inches in diameter, and
the other is 0.313 inches. Each plate is labeled with
the actual ow number in both intake and exhaust
mode as veried at the SuperFlow factory. The test
plate can be owed to conrm that the bench is
working properly.

The mu󰀪er assembly replaces the rear panel on
the SF-1020i and has been designed to reduce the
overall noise emitted by the exhaust air ow of the
machine.

3.4 Options and Accessories
3.4.1 Optional HMI Operator Display
The optional display, once fully developed will be described in section.
3.4.2 Air Filter
The SFF1200A-1030 lter assembly is designed
to capture airborne contaminants that are part of
the airstream during testing prior to entering the
bench. These contaminants can be a nuisance as
well as a hazard. The lter assembly is installed
into the cavity beneath the test baseplate and
becomes part of the baseplate. The washable lter
has low restriction to ensure minimal e󰀨ect on the
owbench capacity. The assembly has a 13-inch
(33.02-cm) O-ring opening to easily adapt xtures
and mount test devices. An insert provides a
standard 5-inch opening for the test orice plate or
smaller test applications.
3.4.3 Adapters and Fixtures
SuperFlow o󰀨ers a wide assortment of adapters and xtures for mounting your test device to the
owbench.

4.0 Installation
4.1 Installation
4.1.1 Room Requirements
The SF-1020i owbench should be placed in a relatively open area, free from loose debris such as metal
lings or chips from machining tools. The owbench, in essence, is a giant vacuum cleaner that will ingest
rags, papers, and anything nearby that is not secured.
Space the owbench with a minimum of 6 inches (15.2 cm) on all sides from any equipment or walls.
A power distribution box with a disconnect switch and plug receptacle (supplied by others) should be
located near the owbench. Superow recommends using twist-lock connectors. The power requirements
for the SF-1020i can be either 480 VAC, 40A, three-phase, 50 or 60 hz or 380 VAC, 40A, three-phase,
50 or 60 hz. The power source must be protected with the appropriate sized fuse or circuit breaker. The
SF-1020i has internal circuit breakers for the electronics but no internal over-current protection for the
motor.
If the owbench is in a small room and the exhaust of the bench is also vented into the same room, after a
while, the owbench may heat the area. Conditioning the air for temperature or humidity is not necessary
but would be more comfortable for the operators.
4.1.2 Unpacking
1. The SuperFlow SF-1020i owbench is shipped in a carton.
• Carefully remove the owbench from its shipping carton
• Place it on a level surface
2. Other boxes or cartons may also be shipped that contain accessories and options provided with the
owbench.
4.1.3 Electrical
1. Wire an appropriate sized power cord (supplied
by others) to main incoming power connections
located behind right side panel.
2. Utilize a twist-lock plug connector (supplied by
others) on opposite end of the power cord to
connect SF-1020i owbench to properly sized
power source. Ensure the main power circuit
is OFF before connecting the owbench power
cord to the power source.

4.0 Installation
4.2 Modbus Communication Connection
The SF-1020i owbench uses a programmable
logic controller (PLC) connection to control
the internal components of the owbench. The
owbench utilizes a Modbus TCP/IP network via
the internal controller. This option allows customers
to connect the owbench controller to their Modbus
TCP/IP network and facilitates owbench control
and the exchange of data. Once the owbench has
been properly connected to your system via an
RJ-45 cable (Figure 4.2) and congured (refer to
conguration data in chart below) use the following
commands to communicate, control and read data
from the owbench.

5.1 Modbus Operational Examples
The SF-1020i owbench has been designed
to network with, and be controlled by various
consumer automation systems. The owbench
uses an industrial grade programmable logic
controller (PLC) connection to control the internal
components by utilizing a Modbus TCP/IP network
via the PLC. This option allows customers to
connect the owbench controller directly to their
automated control systems Modbus TCP/IP
network, which facilitates owbench control and the
exchange of data. Superow does o󰀨er optional
control packages. Please contact your sales representative for more information.
5.1.1 Setting the Servo Mode
The SF-1020i is capable of controlling the airow to either test pressure or ow rate. In test pressure
mode, the air pressure is set and the ow rate measured. In ow rate mode, the airow is set and the test
pressure measured.

Register 40002 Servo_Mode provides the status (state) that the owbench is currently in when read.
It also allows for the ability to change (set) states when this register receives commands. The following
commands are accepted:
0= Test Pressure Mode 1= Flow Rate Mode
• Keep the air ducts free of dust or dirt.
• Keep loose material away from the inlet and
exhaust ducts.
!CAUTION
• Inspect the equipment monthly to ensure that
there are no broken or worn parts which could
cause injury to personnel or damage to the
equipment.
• Only qualied operators and maintenance
personnel should perform the procedures
covered in this manual.
!WARNING
Follow this warm-up procedure if the owbench
has been static for more than 2 consecutive weeks
without being ran;
• Set Flow Rate to 10 cfm.
• Set Range to 3.
• With daily reference plate installed run
owbench for 3 minutes.
This is done to avoid bearing damage, ensuring
grease is spread evenly throughout the bearings.
