OPERATION OF RECEIVER AS A PORTABLE AND MAIITEL H()ME RADIO:
Turn aerial switch to 'PORT.' .Tuning, vofume, on-off switch and tone controls
are ort, hodox. When IisLening to disbant stations or when'treble response
seems too prominen!, set tone control. to 'BASS.' RotaLe set fdr mq.ximum vol-
ume from distant stations or to reduce staLic or inberference.
For exLra Iong distance DAYTIME reception, plug in a Ferris wire aerial and
turn aerial switch to tCAR.' In addition, an earth wire can be soldered Lo
the body of the aerial plug for maximum per'formance' If used on a boaL, a
Ferris car radio or wire type aerial eliminates fading when the boat swings
at anchor.
REMEMBER TO MAKE CERTAIN THE SET IS SWITCHED OFF WHEN NOT IN USE.
CARE AND MAINTENANCE OF RECEIVER - DRY BATTERY:
The Eveready ER2761 9 volt battery used is a Iong-life, high capacity cordless
radio energiser much Iarger than the types used in ordinary portables. How-
ever, as with alI makes of aIl-transistor portables and cordless mantel radios,
current drain is proportional Lo volume Ievel. For maximum battery life do
not exceed a comfortable volume Ievel.
N.B. On weak distant sLations the volume control may h'ave to be Lurned well
on, However, this wiII not Lake any more batLery currenL ihan when receiving
a strong local station with the volume contr6I turned well down. The acLuaI
'loudnesst from the speaker determines battery drain. When volume level drops
appreciably and reproduction is poor, check battery and replace if voltage
reading is Iow.
FINISH: The main receiver components are contained in a smartly styled die-
cast metal case. With reasonable care the at!ractive finish will last many
years. When used at picnics, on the beach, etc., take care that water does
not enter t,he seb.
REPLACING THE BATTERY:
With average use, the ER276l baLtery will provide many hours of radio listen-
ing. If however, sensitivity, fidelity or power output seem to be below normal,
the baLtery should be replaced if necessary. The battery can be checked by
switching Lhe set ON and connecting a voltmeter across !he contacts as shown
in Fig. l. Replace i f reading is fi.ve volts or Iower.
HEAT: It is quite safe to operate the set in the sun or in a car which has
been closed and parked in the sun.

OPERATION OF SET IN THE CAR: Page 3
The Model 184 wiII operaLe in a car from its own in-built rod aerial on strong local
signals and the fitting of the distributer suppressor resistor Logether wibh generator
condenser (see'Noise Suppression' diagram) will definately help in reducing ignition
interference. However, results are only fair as fading and ignition noise can spoil
performance particularly when used in a closed car.
Fo' comJlerely SATISFACTORY resulrs, one of uhe following MlB4 accessory kits [tlJST be
u sed.
INSTALLATION METHOD NO. 1 Ferris GutLer Grip AeriaI and Safety Seat Surap.
1. The Aerial should be fitted on the driver's side just behind Lhe cenbre door pillar
(See Figs I and 4). The TIl0 mounting screws must be tightened just sufficiently
to make a secure mechanical mounting and Lo make a sound elecbrical contact to the
car body. If necessary the aerial Iocking bracket may be bent slightly either
Lowards or away from the car body to give Lhe required alignment'
There are several
(a) The aerial is
signal pickup
reasons why this location is best.
(b) Similarly the aerial is further away from overhead power cables, etc., whibh
can slightly reduce'noise' pickup.
(c) The aerial can be raised or lowered from bhe driving position'
(d) When car is parked at kerbside the aerial is Ieast conspicuous, particularly
if folded down along gubter.
2. The thin coaxial Iead-in should run through the'front door opening as shown rn
Fig. 1. The soft rubber door gasLec will easily accepL the thin lead without
damage when the door is closed. A slight mark may show in the external PVC cov-
ering of the lead. On some cars suibable screws are already fitted to secure the
lead to the centre piIIar with cIips, supplied with aerial as shown in
Fig. 1. lVhere screws are not fitted, driLI 3/32 dia, holes in pillar and
use the self-tapping screws supplied with aerial.
An alternative method is whown in Fig 2 where no screws are required' The thin
lead can be tucked behind the trim or secured to it wibh stitching or suitable
pI astic or meLaI c I ips.
NB \{here rhe lead is shown as a dotted line (frg. 1) this secbion is concealed in the
car by running down the centre pillar to the level of the front seat where it is
pushed under the backrest, Ieaving just sufficient lead protruding to plug into
the set. Leave sufficient slack between pi.ll.ar and seat to permit normal adjust-
ment of front seat.
3. For a temporary fitting such as when changing aerial from one car to anothe; the
Iead can.be brought through ther- ^ar :ffside window as showtt in Fig. 3' llhen wir,J-
ing window'up leave a sufficient gap so the Iead will not drag when door is opened.
kept further away from steep walls of road cuttings, etc., thus
is slightly better in such locaLions.

SET AERIAL SWITCH TO .CAR' WHEN OPERATING FROM EXTERNAL AERIAL Page 4
RECOMMENDED INSTALI ATION METHODS:
The set can be quickly fit,ted to any closed car in minutes from the followrng
instructions:
POSITIONING OF SET:
The safety ceab rtrap as shown in Fig. I is designed to prevent the set from moving
unduly with sudden'braking or very sharp cornering and should always be used. Suffic-
ient length of sirap is provided so the set may be placed as shown in Fig. 1 or on its
back ir preferrer so the speaker is directed toward both driver and passengers. If a
third passenger is carried in the front. se'., the set may be turned 'end-on' to give
more seating space.

ELIMINATION OF IG'{ITION NOISE:
Because the Model 184 is so well shield-
ed and filtered ignition noise is seldom
a problem. In addition the location of
the gutter grip aerial is most suitable
for minimum ignition noi se pickup.
If any interference from the motor can
be heard follow the directions given in
the sketch. Remember a Ferris aerial
filter unit is often very effective
in stubborn cases.
NB - Do NOT expect noise-free reception
in a moving car i{ the set is used on
its inbuilt ferrite or portable aerial.

Provision is made on both the STANDARD and the POWERED CRADLE for a padlock.
SUGGESTED USES FOR THE SET .
In the car its performance is comparable with the best 'built-in' sets because of high
sensitivity, selectivity and efficient 5 x 4 oval speaker.
As a t,own or country portable andr'or cordless mantel radio ius eight transistors plus
3 diode circuitry with 3 gang condenser and tuned RF stage will guarantee you good
results.
'lhe set may be used in and around the house, as a portable, taken from car L, caravan,
week-ender, camp, ('-c., even from car to car. Ideal for use on boaLs beciuse separate
aerial connection overcomes drawback of ordinary valve and transistor portables which_
often'fade right out when boat, swings at anchor.
Most suitable for travellecs from car to hotel or motel room, etc. Excellent, too,
for tl:use driving a (,ompanr or Departmental car through the week to transfer to the
fanily car at weekends, holidays, etc. For those who regularly change cars the Model
184 will. be as 'modern as tomorrow' {or years and can t,ransfer to the new car at -
