SITE ANALYSIS AND COLLECTOR PLACEMENT
The SolarSheat air heater requires maximum sun exposure for optimal
performance, be sure to find an un-shaded mounting location for your solar
collector. A careful shading analysis should be performed using professional
tools such as the Sun Pathfinder
or Solar Eye
to locate your collector
properly. The SolarSheat can be mounted flush with an exterior wall or on any
sloped or flat roof. Generally speaking if the installation location is in the northern
hemisphere, the collector should face due south and if located in the southern
Hemisphere, the collector should face due north.
When mounting the collector on a flat or pitched roof, you will want to ensure that
the collector has been mounted at the optimal angle to receive maximum solar
energy during the winter season. Table 2.1 recommends a number of collector
tilt angles for various latitudes.

For sloped roofs, it is necessary to measure the angle of the roof in order to
calculate the angle between roof and collector. Refer to Table 2.2 for some
common roof pitches and their corresponding angles.

EXAMPLE: ROOF INSTALLATION
Follow the steps outlined below to determine the correct angle between roof and collector
for a roof installation with the following characteristics:
Location Latitude = 40 degrees North Roof Pitch
= 12:12 Rise: Run
Roof Angle = 45 degrees
1. Using Table 2.2 and known latitude, determine the recommended collector tilt
as measured from the horizontal plane = 55 degrees @ 40Latitude
2. Subtract roof angle of 45 degrees from recommended collector tilt angle of
55 degrees = 10 degrees between roof and collector is required
3. Using Table 2.4, determine the correct length of elevator strut that is
required to achieve the desired angle between roof and collector. To
achieve the required 10-degree tilt between roof and collector we need a
strut length of 10” for 1000 series collector installed either in portrait or
landscape style and 15” for 1500 series collectors installed in portrait style.
Refer to chapter 3.0 for recommended portrait and landscape mounting
configurations.

1.0 Introduction
The SolarSheat 1000GS, and 1500GS are modular solar collectors designed for
supplemental room heating. Interior air is drawn though the SolarSheat, heated up and
pushed back into the adjoining room. The 1000GS & 1500GS systems are self-powered
and do not require any external electrical power, whereas the 1500GS collectors are
designed to work with either the 1500GS (two-pak) or an A/C powered fan system.
This manual covers the roof stand installation of the 1000GS and 1500GS solar collector
models.
2.1 General installation
The successful operation of the SolarSheat solar collector depends entirely on the proper
installation and maintenance as outlined in this manual. Prior to installation please read the
installation instructions completely. The installation of the SolarSheat roof stand should
comply with all local building codes, permits and OSHA requirements. The SolarSheat can be
installed into new construction projects or retrofitted to existing buildings.

2.4 SolarSheat roof stand installation & mounting procedures
MOUNTING ASSEMBLY
UNISTRUT PAD
1.Mount lower Unistrut pads to roof. Use the mounting assembly as a guide for
determining the spacing of the pads on the roof surface.
2.Locate the pads so that they do not interfere with the roof joists.

3.Drill Unistrut pads prior to installation(if not predrilled). Use 1/2" galvanized threaded rod to mount to
the roof surface and seal well with caulking. Attach 2” X 4” (wood) backing support to spread the load
between the threaded rods/pads.
4.Cut 2” X 4” brace to the depth of the roof rafters to prevent bending the roof sheeting.
5.Tighten threaded rod using appropriate nuts and washers.
6.Mount upper & lower collector mounting assembly with brackets to SolarSheat collector using 5“
TEK screws on the bottom front and 5- 1" TEK screws on the top front.
Using the upper mount as a flashing cap
Note: The SolarSheat mount can also act as an end cap or flashing. You can have the option of placing the
collector on the inside of the mount or outside. If you place the collector on the inside it will act as cap. It is a
very snug fit when used this way. See below.
