STEP 1 Connections
Quick Setup Guide
DVD Recorder to TV Connections
aConnect the “Antenna” or “Cable TV”
service wire to the “ANT. IN” jack on
the DVD Recorder using a coa ial
RF Cable.
bConnect the RF.OUT jack from the
DVD Recorder to the Antenna Input
jack on the TV using the RF Cable
supplied.
And/Or
Connect the “A/V OUT” jacks from
the DVD Recorder to the “VIDEO IN”
and “AUDIO IN” jacks on the TV
using the RCA-type Cables supplied.
cTurn the TV on and select the video
input source connected to the DVD
Recorder.
Antenna Input Connection: Tune the
TV to channel 3 or 4.
Audio/Video Connections: Tune the
TV to the video input source.
aConnect the AV 1 IN or AV 2 IN jacks
from the DVD Recorder to the
Audio/Video out jacks on your e ter-
nal A/V device, using optional
audio/video cables.
bUse a DV Cable (not supplied) to
connect the DV in/out jack from your
DV Digital Camcorder to the front
panel DV IN jack on the DVD
Recorder.

STEP 2 Pre-operation Setup
EZ Channel Scan
About DVD Recording
Follow these instructions to scan for channels if you are
using an antenna or basic cable TV connection.
aPress SETUP.
The Setup menu appears.
bPress BBto select Tunin Band then press BBa ain.
cUse vv/ VVto select TV or CATV then press ENTER.
TV: If you are using a standard antenna to receive channels.
CATV: If you are using basic cable to receive channels.
dUse vv/ VVto select the EZ Channel Scan option.
eUse BBto hi hli ht Start then press ENTER to be in the
channel search.
The tuner will automatically search for all available chan-
nels in the area and place them in the tuner’s
memory. After scanning is complete,the DVD Recorder
tunes to the lowest channel number found.Press SETUP to
e it the Setup menu.
NOTE : To add or erase channels from memory, see the
Owner’s Manual for details.

Recordable Discs
DVD-RW (Digital Video Disc - ReWritable):
These Discs can be recorded on repeatedly.
Recordings can be erased, then you can
record again on the same Disc.
DVD-R (Digital Video Disc - Recordable):
These Discs can be recorded only once.
After you finalize a DVD-R, you cannot
record on it or edit it.
DVD+RW (Digital Video Disc + ReWritable):
These Discs can be recorded on repeatedly.
Recordings can be erased, then you can
record again on the same Disc.
DVD+R (Digital Video Disc + Recordable):
These Discs can be recorded only once.
After you finalize a DVD+R, you cannot
record on it or edit.
What are ‘recording modes’for DVD-RW?
There are two recording modes available using
DVD-RW disc: VR mode and Video mode. When
recording to a DVD-R disc, recordings are always in
Video mode. DVD-RW discs can be formatted for VR
mode recording or Video mode recording.
VR mode recording
• Not playable on regular DVD players
• Recordings can be extensively edited
Video mode recording
• Playable on regular DVD players (after finalizing)
• Limited editing features
Recording time and picture quality
There are four preset recording quality modes:
HQ (High Quality) – about 1 hour/disc
SQ (Standard Quality) – about 2 hour/disc
LQ (Low Quality) – about 4 hour/disc
EQ (Extended Quality) – about 6 hour/disc
STEP 3 DVD Recording
Step by Step DVD Recording
Follow these steps to make your first DVD Recordin .
aLoad a recordable disc into the disc tray.
•If you load a completely blank disc, the Recorder will ini-
tialize the disc.
DVD-R: The Recorder initializes the disc for Video mode.
The recording mode will always be Video mode.
DVD-RW: The Recorder initializes the disc for VR mode.
DVD+R: The Initialize menu appears. Select “Yes” then
press ENTER.
DVD+RW: The Recorder initializes the disc for DVD+RW
mode.
•Also, you can format the disc from the Setup menu as
described in step 4.
bSet the Recordin Mode.
• Press REC MODE to set the Record Mode to HQ, SQ,
LQ, or EQ.
• The amount of available recordable space on the disc
appears on the On-Screen Display.
cSpecify source to record.
• Use CH v/ Vbuttons to select the channel you want to
record.
• If you are recording from a Camcorder or other e ternal
device, use AV to select input source
AV1: AUDIO IN 1 / VIDEO IN 1 jacks on back panel
AV2: INPUT 2 (VIDEO, AUDIO (L/R), S-VIDEO IN) jacks
on front panel
DV: DV IN port on front panel.
dStart recordin .
• Press REC to start recording.
ePause/Stop recordin .
• Press PAUSE/STEP (X)to pause recording.
Press PAUSE/STEP (X) again or REC (z) to continue the
recording.
• After recording is complete, press STOP (x).
A message appears for a few moments while the
Recorder stops recording and adds the new title to the
disc menu.
• Use MENU/LIST to review the contents of your recorded
disc.
STEP 4 Initialize & Finalize
Disc Initialization using Setup enu
You can format the disc from the Setup menu as described
below.
Caution
If you want to change the disc format, everything recorded on the
disc will be erased.
aPress SETUP.
The Setup menu appears.
bUse v/ Vto select the Disc option.
cWhile the Disc option is selected, press Bto move to the
second level.
dUse v/ Vto select the Disc Format option.
ePress Bto move to the third level.
Start icon is highlighted.
fPress ENTER.
Disc Format menu appears.
gFor DVD-RW discs, use b/ Bto select a desired Disc
Format Mode (VR Mode or Video Mode) then press
ENTER.
For DVD+RW discs, o to step 8.
hUse b/ Bto select “Ok” then press ENTER.
It takes a few moments to format the disc.
If you want your recorded discs to be compatible with other
DVD players, you MUST finalize them:
aFollow steps 1-3 as shown above (Disc Initialize usin
Setup Menu).
bUse the v/ Vbuttons to select the “Finalize” option, then
press ENTER.
cUse the b/ Bbuttons to select “Ok”, then press ENTER.
Disc Finalization may take a few minutes to complete.
dPress SETUP to exit the menu.
