That tradition was born in Lansing,
Michigan, on August
2 1, 1897,when
Ransom
E. Olds began building a
horseless carriage “in as nearly a perfect
manner
as possible.” Soon, Oldsmobiles
rolled offthe nation’s
first assembly line.
Innovation and refinement have
always set Oldsmobiles apart. In 1939,
Oldsmobile introducedthe celebrated
Hydra-Matic transmission, a four-speed
forerunner of today’s advanced systems.
In 1948,the high-spirited Rocket
V8
engine set standards for performance.

A Step Ahead
In 1966,Toronado made front-wheel-
drive news, including Motor Trend’s
“Car of the Year.” Still breaking new
ground, the 1974
“Toro” became thefist

This sectiontells you about the seats-
how to adjust them-and also about
reclining seatbacltsand head restraints.

ever and try to move the seat with your
lady, to make sure theseat is locked
nto place.
Manual 4-Way Adjustable Seat
(OPTION)
There are twolevers atthe front of the
seat. The left leveradjusts the seat
forward and back. The right lever
adjusts the angle of the front
of the seat.
To Adjust the Seat's Forward and
Rearward Movement:
Lift the left lever up and adjust the seat
forward or back.Then releasethe lever
and try to move the seat to be certain
that it
is locked in place.
To Raise or Lower the Front of the
Seat:
Lift the right lever,and lean forward or
backward.

Power Seat Controls (OPTION)
To adjust thepower seat on some
models:
Front Control (A): Raise the front of
the seat by holding the switch up.
Lower the front
of the seat by holding
the switch down.
Center Control (B): Move the seat
forward or back by holding thecontrol
to thefront or back.
Move the seat higher
by holding the
control up. Lower the seatby holding
the control down.
Rear Control (C): Raise the rear of the
seat by holding the switch up. Lower
the rear of the seat by holding the
switch down.
Manual Lumbar Support
rurn theknob on the side of the
h-iver's seat clockwiseto increase
;upport to thelower back.Turn the
mob countercloclnvise to decrease
support.
Manual Reclining Seatback
To adjust the seatbaclc, liftthe lever on
the outer side of the seat and move the
seatbaclcwhere you want it.Release the
lever to lock the seatbaclc.
Pull up on thelever and theseat will
go
to an upright position.
Don't have a seatback reclined,
however, if your vehicle is moving.

Head Restraints
Slide the head restraint up ordown so
that the top of the restraint is closestto
the top
of your ears.
This position reducesthe chance of a
neck injury ina crash.

Front Seatback Latches DOOR
MODELS)
The frontseatback folds forwardto let
people getinto the back seat.Your
seatbackwill move backand forth
freely, unless you cometo a sudden
stop. Thenit will lockinto place.
There’sone time the front seats may
not fold without some help from you.
That’s
if your vehicle is parked facing
down a fairly steep hill.
To fold a front seatback forward,push
the seatback toward the rear seat as you
lift this latch. Then the seatback will
fold forward. Thelatch must be down
for the seat to work properly.
Easy-Entry Seat (2.~00~ Moms)
The right front seat of your vehicle
makes
it easy to get inand outof the
rear seat.
When you tilt the right front seatback
fully forward,the whole seat will slide
forward.
After someone gets into the rear seat
area,move the right front seatback to
its original position. Then move the
seat rearward until it locks.

it, be sure to push rearward on
an easy entry seat tobe sure it is
locked.
To get out, again tilt the seatback fully
forward.
Split Fold-Down Rear Seat (OPTION)
To Open:
Pull forward on theseat tab.
To Close:
Push theseatback up toits original
position.
To make sure theseatback issecure,
push it into a
fully upright position. A
loose seatback can cause an injury in
a
sudden stop.

This part of the manual tells you how to
use safety belts properly. It also tells
you some things
you should not dowith
safety belts.

In many states and Canadian provinces,
the law saysto wear safety belts. Here’s
why: They work.
You never know if you’ll bein a crash.
If you do have acrash, you don’tknow
if
it will be a bad one.
A few crashes are mild, and some
crashes can be
so serious that even
buckled up a person wouldn’t survive.
But mostcrashes are in between.In
many
of them, people who buckle up
can surviveand sometimes walk away.
Without belts they could have been
badly
hurt or killed.
After morethan
25 years of safety belts
in vehicles, the facts are clear. In most
crashes buckling up does matter
... a lot!

Why Safefy Belts Work
When you ride in or on anything, you
go as fast as it goes.
1. For example, if the bike is going 10
mph (16 km/h), so is the child.
2. When the bike hits the block, it
stops. But the child keeps going!

3. Take the simplest vehicle. Suppose
it's just
a seat on wheels.
