A fine pieceofmachinery,suchasthe Cadillac, naturallyre-
quires a certainamountofcaretoassuresmooth running, de-
pendability and longlife,andtheowner will derivetheutmostin

continuoussatisfactionandutility from operationofthecarby
following theinstructionsgivenbelow:
1. Drive the car atmoderate speeds forthefirst500miles.•
2.Operatethecarinaccordancewiththeinstructionscon-
tained inthis manual.
3. Check theengineoillevelevery100to150milesandadd
oil asoftenasnecessarytokeeptheindicatorat "Full."
4. Check theairpressureofthetiresat least oncea week and
keepituptotherecommendedpressure—40poundsfrontand
rear; oncarsdrivenathigh speeds, 45poundsinfront.
5.Adddistilledwaterto
thestoragebatteryevery
1000miles,andinwarm
weatherevery500miles,or
at least everytwo weeks.
6. Have the car lubricated
every1000miles,orat least
onceeachmonthinac-
cordance with the lubrication
schedulegivenonpage10.
7.Havethecarinspected
by an Authorized Cadillac-
La SalleServiceStation
every1000miles,orat least
oncea month.

Authorized Service
The firstfive items abovedonotnecessarilywarranta visitto
theservicestation. The lasttwo,however, require theattention
of those whose knowledgeandexperiencequalifiesthemtoper-
form the required workefficiently and in accordance withfactory
recommendations.

PreventiveService i
Preventiveserviceisthefundamentalprincipleof Cadillac
Service. Itisbasedontheknowledge that regularexpert atten-
tion keepsemergencyserviceata minimum,assuringcontinuous>
satisfactoryoperationofthecar with a minimumofinterruption
andexpense.
The first thought,ofcourse,istheproperprotectionofall
working parts throughcorrectlubricationaccordingtoschedule.
The second,of great importance,issystematicinspectionevery
1000 miles,oroncea month,so that anynecessaryadjustments
maybemadebeforetheneedbecomesanemergency.<
Authorized Cadillac-La SalleServiceStations will makesuch
inspectionswithoutcharge.Lubricationandanynecessary
adjustments will thenbeperformedatstandardpricesunder'
factory regulationaftertheownerhasapprovedtheworkandthe
prices.

Repair Partst}
Genuine Cadillac parts,manufacturedtothe same rigid specifi-
cationsasthe parts originally usedinthecar,arecarriedinstock
by Authorized Cadillac-La SalleServiceStations.Theyare sold
atuniformpricesthroughoutthe United States andarenotsub-
jecttotheadditionofhandling,exciseorothersupplementary'
charges.Printedpricelists,publishedbythe Cadillac Motor
Car Company,areopentoinspectionbyownersatany Cadillac
distributor'sordealer'sservicestation.
Service Charges
Authorized Cadillac-La SalleServiceStations,inline with the
Cadillac policy ofservingtheownertohis best advantage,are
preparedtoofferservicein three ways:
1.Individualoperationsona flat-rate basis,authorizedbythe
ownerasoccasionrequires.
2.A StandardServiceContractcoveringcompletemechanical
maintenance—lubrication,inspection,alladjustmentsandre-
pairs—overa periodofoneyearor 12,000 milesata fixed price.
3.A LubricationAgreementcovering12scheduledlubrica-
tionsand12thoroughinspectionsovera periodof 12,000 miles
ata fixed price.Underthisplananyadjustmentsorrepairsthe
ownerauthorizesarepaidforas individual operations.
Theownermayobtainserviceinanyof these three wayshe
chooses.Certain advantages aretobederivedfromtheStandard
Service ContractortheLubricationAgreement,buttheowner
maypurchaseserviceinanyof these forms with perfect assurance
that thework will bedoneinaccordance with Cadillac standards.
Flat RateService
When a car enters theservicestation,itispromptlyinspected
by anexpert tester who quotes theowneranexactprice, which in
practically every case includesmaterialas well aslabor,forthe
work hefindsnecessary.Theownerthenauthorizestheworkat
thispriceandwhenhereceivesthe bill, thisisthepricehepays.
ChargesprevailingatAuthorizedServiceStationsarebasedon
standardschedulesfurnishedbythe Cadillac Motor Car Com-
pany.Theseschedules call formethodsandtoolsapprovedby
the same engineerswhodesignedandbuiltthecar, thus assuring
thehighestqualityofworkatthelowestpossibleprice.Standard
price schedulesareopentoownersforinspectionatanyAuthor-
ized Cadillac-La SalleServiceStation.

Standard Service Contract '
The Standard Cadillac ServiceContractisavailabletoownersj
whowishtobeassuredofcontinuoussatisfactoryoperationandv
maintenanceoftheircarsata predetermined,economical cost. ^
ItisbasedonCadillac'sprincipleofpreventiveserviceinsuring
the greatest satisfactionwiththe fewest possibleinterruptions.f
Complete lubricationonscheduleandthoroughinspectiontoj
anticipatetheneedofadjustmentandrepairlargelyeliminates
theneedofservice between regularinspections.*
The ServiceContractisrecognizedbyallAuthorized Cadillac- i
La SalleServiceStationsintheUnited States regardlessofwhere
itmayhavebeenpurchased.Theowneristhusassuredofall,'
Contract serviceduehimwithoutadditionalchargewherever
hemaytravel.He needs onlytopresenttheidentification card
issuedtohimatthetimethe Contract ispurchasedtoreceivethis'
servicethe same asiftheworkwasperformedbytheservice>
stationfromwhichthe Contract waspurchased.
Thesecontractsareavailableatall Authorized ServiceStations.
Three contractsareavailabletocovereachofthreeperiods;the
first yearorfirst 12,000 miles,thesecondyearorsecond 12,000
milesandthe third yearor third 12,000 miles,respectively.
Owners areurgedtotakeadvantageoftheconveniencesoffered
by Contract ownershiptoobtainefficientandexpertserviceunder,
factoryregulationsfortheircarsatthepredeterminedeconomical1
cost. '
Lubrication Agreement
Owners whodonotpurchasea ServiceContractareurgedto^
purchasea Lubrication Agreement. Lubrication accordingtoi
scheduleisthemostimportantattentionrequiredbythecar and <
the Lubrication Agreement assures thisserviceregularlyover
aperiodof 12,000 milesat a savingofmorethan 30% ofthetotal
cost ofthe twelve operationsif paid for individually. i
The Lubrication AgreementisrecognizedbyallAuthorizedi
Cadillac-La SalleServiceStationsintheUnited States, the same
astheServiceContract,andtheidentificationcardneedonlybe-'
presentedtohavetheworkscheduledperformedatany/Author-
izedServiceStationregardlessofwheretheAgreement'was
purchased.
The holderofa Lubrication Agreementisrelievedofthe
thoughtoflubrication cost duringtheentire 12,000 mileperiod
by budgetinghis expense beforehand.He needs onlytakehiscar
totheservicestationatmonthlyor1000mileintervalsand
request"schedulelubrication"toobtainallofthelubricarion
due,performedaccordingtofactoryspecifications.
Regardlessofhowtheownerpreferstohavethe
necessaryserviceperformedonhiscar,thesurest
guaranteeoflonglifeandcompletemotoring satis-
factionatthe least possible expense iscorrect lubrica-
tionandpreventiveservicerenderedevery1,000miles
or once a monthbyanAuthorized Cadillac-La Salle
ServiceStation.

LUBRICATION
Lubrication Schedule
T
HE movingpartsofthe Cadillac V-8, builtwithinfinitecare
and fitted to precisionlimits, deserve tffectne lubrication to
preservetheir smooth operatingefficiency.Lubrication, tobe
most effective, must be done systematically at regular mileage
intervals,To assist theownerinobtainingproperlubrication, a
complete lubrication schedule is reproducedon page 10.This
schedule, iffaithfullyfollowed,willinsurecorrectlubricationof
each wearingsurface.As a furtheraidtotheowner,anillustrated
lubricationchart, based onthelubrication schedule, isfurnished
with this Manual to assist theoperatorinvisualizingthelocation
ofthevariouslubricatingpoints.
The unit of the chart as well as the schedule is 12,000
miles whichisdividedinto twelve 1000-mile intervals. Cor-
responding to these is
a series of lubricating
operations,grouped and
numbered consecutively
from 1 to 12, intended to
beperformed successively at
each 1000 mileage interval
until the 12,000 mile cycle
has been completed. At
13,000 miles, the schedule

Although thescheduleisexpressedintermsofmilesthecar
should belubricatedonceeachmontheventhoughthemileage
indicated onthespeedometeris less than 1000 sincethelast
lubrication operationwasperformed.The lubrication workcan
bedonewhilethecarisintheservicestationforitsregular
monthly or 1000 mileinspection.
Lubricants
The selectionofproperlubricantsshouldbeoneofthefirst
concernsoftheownerinhisattentiontothelubricationofthe
car. Thelubricantsmustnotonlybeofhighqualitybuttheir
viscosityandothercharacteristicsmustbesuitedtothepurpose
for whichtheyaretobeused.
Cadillac engineershaveworkedoutindetailthespecifications
for thelubricantrequiredforeachpointto meet theparticular
conditionsofspeed,load,temperatureand kind ofmetalsin
contact.
Authorized Cadillac-La SalleServiceStationsarepreparedto
furnish lubricantsunder these specificationstogivethe best re-
sults intheirrespectivelocalities. When thecaris lubricated by

someonenotfamiliarwith Cadillac specifications,lubricants
should be called for by the S.A.E. viscosities recommended in the
following paragraphs.
Engine Oil
Engine oilrecommendationsaregiveninthechartbelow.It
should benotedthatdifferentgradesofoilaretobeusedfor
average driving andforprolongedhighspeed driving inboth
summer and winter.

Transmission Lubricant
Gear oilofS.A.E.viscosity160shouldbeusedinthetrans-
missionattemperaturesabove20°F.Fortemperaturesbelow
20° F, a lightoilofS.A. E. viscosity90shouldbeusedortheoil
usedduringsummerweathershouldbethinnedwithkerosine.
Someofthelubricantsdesignatedby "EP" followingtheir
S.A. E. classification,and some otherlubricantswhicharebeing
marketed, areinjurioustobronzepartsandshouldnotbeusedin
Cadillac carsunderanycircumstances.Likewise, soap greases
will notsatisfactorilylubricate these gears andshouldnotbe
used.
Rear Axle Lubricant
Gear lubricantofS.A.E.viscosity160shouldbeusedinthe
rear axle.Forextremelylowtemperatures,itmaybenecessary
tochangetoa lightlubricantofS.A.E.viscosity90ortothin
thelubricantwithkerosineas suggested under"Transmission
Lubricants."
Steering Gear Lubricant
The selectionoftheproperlubricantforthesteeringgearisof
specialimportance,particularlytoavoid hard steeringincold
weather.A specialsteeringgearlubricantsuitableforextreme
heat andcoldisavailableandshouldbeusedinthesteeringgear
theyear round.
Chassis Lubricant
A good gradeof chassis lubricant shouldbeusedforall chassis
pointsindicatedinthelubricationchartasrequiringthistypeof
lubricant. Ordinary cup grease isnotsatisfactoryandif,inan
emergency,itisusedinplaceof chassis lubricant, the car should
againbelubricatedwithin300or400miles.
Clutch and Wheel Bearing Lubricant
The frontwheelbearingsandtheclutch release bearingshould
be lubricatedwitha goodgradeof Clutch andWheelBearing

Lubricant havinga highmeltingpoint. Ordinary grease at
these pointsislikelytomeltandrunontothebrakesorthe
clutch.
Water Pump Lubricant
A water-resistant calcium soap lubricant having a highmelting
pointisrecommendedforuseinthewaterpump grease cup.
Only lubricantsofthistypeshouldbeused;other lubricants will
bedissolvedintothecooling system liquid. Cup greases and
wheelbearinglubricantsareentirelyunsuitedforthispurpose.
Engine Lubrication
The supplyof engine oiliscarriedinanoilpanatthebottom
of thecrankcaseandiscirculatedthroughthe engine bymeans

of a gearpumpinsideofthecrankcase.Theoilcirculatedbythis
pump lubricatesthemainandconnectingrodbearings,thecam-

shaftbearings,the cylinder walls,thepistonsandthepistonpins,
thefrontendchains,thevalvemechanismandthefan.
There areafewpointsontheenginethatcannotbetakencare
of bythepressuresystemand these pointsshouldbelubricated
according totheinstructionsgiveninthe lubrication chart. This
includesthestartingmotor,thegenerator,thedistributorand
thewaterpump.
Oil Level
The normal capacityoftheoilpaniseight quarts which fills it
tothelevelofthescreeninthepan. When theoilpancontains
thisamounttheoillevelindicator between thetwoblocksat
therearoftheengine(figure6) shows "Full." Theoillevel
should becheckedevery100to150milesand,whenever neces-
sary, enoughoilshouldbeaddedto bring theindicatorupto
"Full." Itshouldneverbepermittedtodropbelow "Fill."
Particular attentionshouldbe paid totheoillevelin case of
prolonged driving athighspeed.Athigh speeds theoiliscon-
sumedmanytimesas rapidly asatcity driving speeds andoil
mustbeaddedmorefrequentlytomaintainthe proper level.
Crankcase VentilatingSystemand Oil Filter
Cadillac V-8 engines areequippedwitha crankcaseventilating
systemandanoilfilter tokeeptheoilinthe best condition
possible. The ventilatingsystem, which functionsautomatically,
preventsdilutionandcontaminationoftheoilbyremovingthe
vaporswhich seep pastthepistons.
The oilfilterremoves dirt andsolidmatter from theoil until
itgradually becomes socloggedthatit ceases tofunction.The
filter cartridge mustthenbereplaced. Normally, replacement
should beat 12,000 miles.Theoilpanandscreenshouldbe
removed andthoroughlywashedwithgasolineevery 12,000
milestoremoveanycarbonorforeignparticlesthatmay
havecollected.

Changing Engine Oil
The usefullifeoftheengineoilisgreatlyprolongedbytheuse
of thecrankcaseventilatingsystemandtheoilfilter,buttheoil
pan shouldbedrainedandtheengineoilreplacedevery 2000
miles.To drain theoil,simplyremovethe drain plug(figure6)
and allowtheoiltoflow intoa receptacleplacedunderthecar.
The drain plugshouldthenbereinstalledandtightenedsecurely
beforepouringinfresh oil. Eight quartsarerequiredto bring
theoillevelindicatorto "Full."

OPERATION

NE ofthefirstthingsthe driver ofthe Cadillac V-8 shoulddo
istofamiliarizehimselfwiththelocationanduseofthe
instrumentsandcontrolsdescribedinthischapter.
Gasoline Gauge
The gauge marked "Gasoline"indicates in gallonsthequantity
of fuelinthetankattherearofthecar. This gauge operates
electrically and indicates
thequantityoffuel only
tvhen the ignition is turned
on. Whenthetankis
beingfilled andthe
driver wishes tocheck
theamountoffuelin
thetank,heshouldfirst
shutoffthe engine to
comply withfilling
stationregulationsand
thenswitchontheigni-
tionsothatthe gauge
will operate.

Oil PressureGauge
The oilpressure gauge indicatesonlythepressureunderwhich
theoilisbeingforcedtothe engine bearings.It does not indicate
the quantity ofoilintheengine.The gauge shouldindicatezero
aslongasthe engine isnotrunning,butassoonasitisstarted
and aslongasitruns,itshould show pressure.Ifnopressureis
indicatedwhenthe engine isrunning,the engine shouldbe
stoppedatonce.Seriousdamagemayresultifthe engine isfun
for anylengthoftimewhateverwithnooilpressure.

Ammeter
The gauge marked"Amperes"indicatestherateofchargeor
dischargeofthebatteryIt does notindicatethetotaloutput
of thegeneratoratanytimenor does itindicatethecurrent
drawn bythestartingmotorwhenstartingthecar.
The ammetershouldindicateonthecharge side mostofthe
time;otherwisemore current willbe drawn fromthebatterythan
isputintoitandthebatterywilleventuallybecomefullydis-
charged. Normally,whennolightsareinuse,theammeter

should show "charge"assoonasthecaris running tenor twelve
milesanhourinhighgear.Ifitfailsto show a chargeunder
these conditions,orifit shows a dischargewhenthe engine is
not running and noelectricalequipmentisinuse,the cause should
beinvestigated.
Temperature Indicator
The temperatureofthecooling liquid intheradiatorisin-
dicatedbythe gauge marked"Temperature."Forordinary
driving, afterthe engine haswarmedup,theindicatorshould
stay withinthe "Normal" range,butunderconditionsoflong
hard driving, especiallyinsummerweather,itmayindicate

The throttleofthe carburetor
is controlledbyahandleverand
a footpedaloraccelerator.The
normal positionofthehand
leverfor driving thecarisall
thewayupto "CLOSED." In
thispositionthethrottleofthe
carburetor isopenjustenough
topermittheenginetorunat
idling speedafteritis warm.
For starting,however,thelever
should bemovedapproximately
edand will notinterferewith
gine.Ifitindicates"Hot"
aftershortrunsandunder
averageoperatingconditions,
however,the cause shouldbe
investigated.Thetemperature
indicator will alwaysshowa
temporary riseintemperature
immediately afterstoppingthe
engine. This likewiseisa
natural conditionandisdue
totheresidualheatinthe
engine.
For averageoperationin
warm weather,thehoodports
should beopen. Ordinarily,
these portsshouldbeopened
atthestartof warm weatherin
thespringandleftopen until
thebeginningofcoldweather
in the fall. They maybe
thewindsplitsonthe hood ports.

one-fourth thewaydown,andshouldbeleftinthisposition
until theengineis warm enoughto permit the lever to be returned
tothe idling positionwithoutstallingtheengine.(Alsosee
Chapter on "Cold Weather Operation.")
Carburetor Choke Control
Correct useofthechokecontrolisessentialnotonlyto quick
starting oftheengine,butalsohasan important effect onthelife
of theengine.Thebuttonmustbepulledoutfarenoughin
starting toprovideanexplosivemixture quickly sothatthe
battery isnotunnecessarilydischargedby useless cranking. The
button mustalsobeleftoutfarenough during thewarming-up
period sothattheengine will run withoutmissing and "popping-
back."
On theother hand, itshouldnotbepulledoutanyfurtheror
leftoutanylongerthanisnecessarytoaccomplish these results,
because some ofthe excess liquid gasolineinthe enriched mixture
does not burn andmaywashofftheoilonthecylinderwalls,
interfering withproperlubricationofthepistons.Thebutton
should bepushedallthewayinassoonasthiscanbedonewith-
outcausing"popping-back."
If theenginestillretainsheat from previous running, thechoke
control shouldnotbeusedwithoutfirst attemptingtostartthe
engineonthe normal mixture.Ifthechokebuttonispulledout
for startinga hotenginethemixturemaybemadeso rich that
starting will beimpossible.
The chokebuttonisnota priming device.Ithasno effect
whateveronthefuelorthefuel mixture unless theengineisbeing
cranked oris running underitsownpower.Tohaveany effect,
itmustbepulledoutandkeptpartlyout during the cranking
operation.
Starting theCar
To startthecar, first makesurethetransmissionisinneutral

and the hand throttleisinthenormalstartingposition. Then
pull outthechoke (unless thecariswarmfromprevious
running), switchontheignitionbyturningthekeytothe left
until thelockcylinderspringsout,and step onthestarter.
As soonasthe engine starts, release thestarterpedalandpush
thechokebuttoninasfaraspossiblewithoutstallingtheengine.
When the engine warmsup, push the choke button all the way in.
The proper useofthechokecontrolwillpermitthe engine to run
smoothlyuntilitwarmsup.The engine shouldneverberaced
towarmitup.Racing
the engine isnotonly

Starting Hints
In coldweather,dis-
engage theclutchto
geta quickerstartand
torelievethebatteryof
the strain of turning the
transmissiongears.
If the engine does not
start readily, release the
starterpedalandlook
for thecause.
Do not run downthe
battery bytoo much useofthestartermotorwhenthe engine
does notstartreadily. First find the cause; otherwise,thebattery
may berun down sufficientlytomakestartingimpossible.
Check the contents ofthegasolinetank.
See thatthethrottle hand lever isinthenormalstarting
position andthatthechokecontrolhasbeenusedproperly.
If thecarburetorischokedfromunnecessaryuseofthechoke
control orunnecessaryprimingwiththeacceleratorpedal(see
Fig. 11.Thepositionofthehandthrottleand
theproperuseofthechokecontrolisof par-
ticular importanceinstartingthecar.

fully openpositionandholdthestarterpedaldownfor10to15
seconds toget rid ofthesurplusgasoline.Next, return thehand
throttletothenormalstartingposition, turn ontheignition
and step onthestarter.
Ride Regulation
The driver maycontroltheactionoftheshockabsorbersatany
timetosuittheconditionsof road and speed. The control handle
islocatedbeneaththe
instrumentpanelonthe
left-hand side ofthe
car next tothesteering
column.
The degree of control
isindicatedby a dial on
theinstrumentpanel
labeled"RideRegula-
tion," and marked with
five degrees, ranging
from "free"to "firm."
In general,"free"isfor
slow speeds overcity
pavements,while
"firm" isfor fast speeds
overroughroads,but
the driver can best deter-
mineby trial the degree of firmness or softness best suitedtohis
requirementsunderconditionsofcarload,speedandthe road.

Lighting Switch
The lightingswitchcontrolislocatedatthecenterofthe
steeringwheeloppositethethrottlecontrol.Theleverhasfour
positions; "Parking," "Off," "Passing"and "Driving." Turn-
ing theleverto "Parking" turnsontheparkinglampsandthe
