APR500 Barcode-Version
1 Introduction
This document explains the functionality of the APR500 Barcode-Version. It does not explain
details about basic APR500 functions. Please see the other APR500 manuals for general
information about the APR500.
For the Barcode-Version of the APR500 the connector at the top of the reader is not available.
Hence it is not possible to connect an external antenna or an RS232 cable. The only wired
interface that can be used is USB via the contacts on the bottom of the reader. You might use
the Docking Station ADS500 or the USB Adapter AUB500 for this purpose. The APR500 with
Barcode also contains a Bluetooth Module for wireless communication. For further details about
the Bluetooth function please refer to the document ‘APR500_Bluetooth_Manual_eng’.
The Barcode Scanner might be used in ‘Classic-Mode’ or in ‘Task-Mode’ – the Database
Function does not support Barcode fields at the moment.
2 Using the Barcode-Scanner in Classic-Mode
The Classic-Mode of the APR500 is described in the document APR500 operational manual.
This operating mode uses the Hotkeys and and provides basic data recording options.
2.1 Barcode number as RFID replacement
One possibility for using the Barcode Scanner in Classic-Mode is to use the number of the
Barcode instead of the RFID number. Therefore it is necessary to change the ‘Reader’ setting
for Hotkey or . In order to do so, enter the APR500s menu by pressing the button.
Then navigate to the Hotkey-Reader menu as shown below.
When you press the corresponding Hotkey now, the APR500 will activate the Barcode scanner
instead of the RFID reader. This might be useful if an animal has no RFID tag but a Barcode as
a visual ID.

2.2 Assigning a Barcode to an RFID tag
There might be applications where it is required to assign a Barcode number to the electronic ID
of an RFID tag, for example for recording blood samples or treatments (scan Barcode on the
medicine).
In order to configure this function, the Hotkey-Mode needs to be changed first. As always ,this
can be done for Hotkey or .
In the main screen of the APR500 you should see “Assign ? Save” now for the configured
Hotkey (here: Hotkey A).
After pressing the configured Hotkey the APR500 activates the RFID reader and you can read a
transponder as usual. After the tag has been read, the APR500 prompts to enter an Alias.
Here you might type in something using the alphanumeric keys or you can press the button
for activating the Barcode Scanner. Point the top of the APR500 into the direction of the
Barcode. After the Barcode has been scanned successfully, you will see the new assignment on
the readers display.
The large number in the first line shows the Barcode number and the second line the RFID
number. You might use the keys or for scrolling to additional information about this
record.

If the transponder you have read has an assignment already, the following message appears
after scanning the tag:
If you want to assign a different Alias (or Barcode) to this ID, press the button first. The
APR500 will ask for a confirmation:
Press the button in order to continue or the button for aborting the re-assignment. If
you continue with the display will show the tag number again and you have to enter the
new Alias, resp. activate the Barcode Scanner again by pressing .
After the Barcode has be read, the previous assignment will be overwritten with the new one.
3 Using the Barcode Scanner in the Task-Mode
The Task-Mode for the APR500 is another operating mode which is completely independent
from the Classic-Mode and its data collection possibilities. It allows the collection of quite
complex datasets. The amount, the names and the type of the entries in the Task-Mode
datasets are definable very flexible using the provided Task-Tool PC-Software.
For the Task-Mode it is also possible to define fields of the type ‘Barcode’. The Task-Mode
requires the definition of Tasks first and it is up to the distributor to create such Tasks for the
end-user. For further details please see the separate documentation for the Task-Mode.
4 Supported Barcode types
The following Barcode types are supported by the APR500:
Code39
Code 128
Codabar
Interleaved 2/5
Code 93
UPC-A
UPC-E
EAN-8
