WARNING - When using electric products, basic precautions should always be followed, including the following:
1. Read all the Safety and Installation instructions and explanations of Graphic Symbols before using the product .
2. This product must be earthed. If it should malfunction or breakdown, grounding provides a path of least resistance for
electric current to reduce the risk of electric shock. This product is equipped with a cord having an equipment-grounding
conductor and a grounding plug. The plug must be plugged into an appropriate outlet that is properly installed and
earthed in accordance with all local codes and ordinances.
DANGER -Improper connection of the equipment-grounding conductor can result in a risk of electric shock.
Check with a qualified electrician or serviceman if you are in doubt as to whether the product is properly grounded. Do
not modify the plug provided with the product - if it will not fit the outlet, have a proper outlet installed by a qualified
electrician.
3. To reduce the risk of injury, close supervision is necessary when this product is used near children.
4. Do not use this product near water - for example, near a bathtub, washbowl, kitchen sink, in a wet basement, or near a
swimming pool or the like.
5. This product should only be used by a stand or cart that is recommended by the manufacturer.
6. This product, either alone or in combination with an amplifier and headphones or speakers, may be capable of
producing sound levels that could cause permanent hearing loss. Do not operate for a long period of time at a high
volume level or at a level that is uncomfortable. If you experience any hearing loss or ringing in the ears, you should
consult an audiologist.
7. This product should be located so that its location or position does not interfere with its proper ventilation.
8. This product should be located away from heat sources such as radiators, heat registers, or other products that
produce heat.
9. The product should be connected to a power supply only of the type described in the operating instructions or as
marked on the product.
10. This product may be equipped with a polarized line plug (one blade wider than the other). This is a safety feature. If
you are unable to insert the plug into the outlet, contact an electrician to replace your obsolete outlet. Do not defeat the
safety purpose of the plug.
11. The power-supply cord of the product should be unplugged from the outlet when left unused for a long period of time.
When unplugging the power supply cord, do not pull on the cord, but grasp it by the plug.
12. Care should be taken so that objects do not fall and liquids are not spilled into the enclosure through openings.
13. The product should be serviced by qualified service personnel when:
A. The power-supply cord or the plug has been damaged; or
B. Objects have fallen, or liquid has been spilled into the product; or
C. The products has been exposed to rain; or
D. The product does not appear to be operating normally or exhibits a marked change in performance; or
E.The product has been dropped, or the enclosure damaged.
14. Do not attempt to service the product beyond that described in the user-maintenance instructions. All other servicing
should be referred to qualified service personnel.
15. WARNING - Do not place objects on product power cord or place it in a position where anyone could trip
over, walk on or roll anything over it. Do not allow the product, or its bench, or its pedal board to rest on or to be installed
over power cords of any type. Improper installations of this type create the possibility of fire hazard and/or personal
injury.

MODEL “HYMNUS IV”
FOREWORD
This instrument has been designed and built with the most advanced SWP (Sampled Wave
Processing) technology, aimed at recalling the characteristic timbre of the classic pipe organ.
The HYMNUSIVhas a fantastically natural and flexible sound in that, with each stop, all the notes
in the musical scale are alternately channelled to the left and to the right (C/C sharp) just as in
traditional pipe organs.
A special remote control programmer (INTERACTIVE PROGRAMMER), supplied as equip-
ment, permits the organist to voice the instrument according to his particular musical requirements
and to adjust its sound to suit the acoustics of the surroundings in which it operates. The HYMNUS
IV organ is also supplied with a four-track SEQUENCER and on request, it can be equipped with
aFLOPPYDISKDRIVERwhichgreatlyenhancesitsperformance,bothforstudyandinliturgical
use. A special user’s manual is devoted to all the functions of the Remote Control Programmer.
The layout of the console, the stop tablet positions, the combination control, the stop nomenclature,
the touch of the keyboards and pedalboard correspond exactly to those of the most prestigious
modern pipe organs with electric action.
Every organist with a good knowledge of such instruments will appreciate the resources in timbre
and dynamics which the HYMNUS IV offers, and which allow him to play most styles of music.
The following general instructions are meant as mere examples, since the art of organ registration
is closely connected with the sensitivity and culture of each musician, and can be influenced by
environmental and acoustic conditions.
STOPS
Control tabs are placed in a horizontal row above manual I and are divided into three, easily
identifiable sections. From left to right: GRANDE ORGANO I(Great), PEDALE (Pedal) and
RECITATIVO II (Swell).
The tabs are of the light-up type: if the lower half of a tab is pressed, the corresponding stop will be
activated,lightinguptherelativeLED.Pressingitonceagain,deactivates thestopand theLEDgoes
out.Suchasystempermitsaclearvisualisationofthestopsdrawnandcorrectuseofthecombination
action.
Tabs are numbered progressively from 1 to 31 above their name. The organist may use this general
number to note down quickly the registrations chosen. The name of the stop is written on the central
part of the tab together with the number of ranks which form it.
The bottom half of the tab shows the conventional pitch of the stop. In each section, stops are
displayed from the lowest to the highest footage. When two stops have the same pitch, they appear
intheordergivenbythesound“family”towhichtheybelong:Principals(orFoundation),Flutesand
Bourdons, Strings, Mixtures, Undulating stops and Reeds.
This last group is placed on the right hand side of each section, before the Couplers, and their tabs
are marked in red.

Grouping of the different families of stops in the three organ sections is proportional to their
importance and to the role they are asked to play in order to perform music from the vast organ
literature. A detailed examination of these divisions follows:

The stops belonging to this family are the foundation of any traditionally-voiced organ.
The structure of the Mixtures relates to the different pitch foundation of the three sections.
Asfarastheuseofthisfamilyofstopsisconcerned,itmustbepointedoutthattheircleanandneutral
soundblendsperfectly with thehuman voice; thereforethey offer asuitable accompaniment toboth
chorus and solo voices.
In traditional organ literature, the ensemble of Principals and Mixtures creates the characteristic
sound of “Organo Pleno”. Manual couplers and Pedal couplers may be added to reinforce and blend
the ensemble.
The stops belonging to the Principal family offer possibilities for dialogues between manuals.
TheSesquialteraII(22/3'+13/5')isacharacteristicsolovoiceofgreatimportanceandancienttradition.
Never to be used alone, it must always be supported by adequate foundation or flute stops, as shown
in the following examples:

The presence of the Sesquialtera in the "plenum" increases the colour and richness.

The family of Flutes and Bourdons ranks next in importance. The sounds of these stops move from
the round and mellow tones, at 16' and 8', to the higher-pitched and more brilliant voices.
Flutes 8' and 4' on the Great offer an excellent basic accompaniment for solo Swell registrations.
Numerous solo registrations are obtainable with the stops of this family on the Swell:

TheimportanceofCornetV(Ex.1)andCornetIV(Ex.2)shouldbenoted;theywerefrequentlyused
in ancient music. Flute Sesquialtera (Ex. 3) may be a good solo registration. In Pedal, Subbasso 16'
and Bordone 8' offer a perfect support for all mf combinations obtainable on the Manuals.
To the registrations described above, more may be added if Flutes and Bourdons are combined with
stops from the Foundation family. Some examples follow:

This incisive and delicate stop adds a graceful note of colour to the fundamental sounds. It is
particularlyusefulinromanticandmodernmusic,whereitcreatesarichcontrastwiththedeeperand
more penetrating sounds.
If Gamba 8' is blended with Nazardo 2 2/3' it will imitate the sound of an “Oboe” for solo purposes.
4) UNDULATING STOPS
RECITATIVO II
Voce celeste 8'
TheVoceceleste8'fromtheSwell possessesa typicalstring character.Played onitsownortogether
with other gentle 8' stops, the Voce celeste 8' is a stop suited to romantic and modern organ music.
It is interesting to note that in the HYMNUS IV model, the phenomenon of acoustic undulation is
completely natural. In fact, on one of the channels the note played is in tune, while on the other the
note is sharp. The undulation, therefore, originates in the “air” between the two separate sound
sources.
NOTE: It is the norm to exclude the undulating stops from all registrations in which the Mixtures,
Reeds or stops above 8' are present. This is because the phenomenon of acoustic undulation gives
rise to a lack of the necessary basic stability. For the same reason, their use is not recommended for
accompanying choral or other instrumental music.
5) REEDS

Regale 4'
Last but not least is the Reed family whose sounds add colour and sharpness to the other stops.
The Great features a Tromba 8' which can be usefully employed as a solo stop to outline a “cantus
firmus” or to enrich the sound of the “Organo Pleno”.
In the Swell the Oboe 8', used alone or with fundamental stops and with the help of the expression
pedal, serves the romantic and late-romantic repertoires very well.
In the Pedal the Controfagotto 16' is suitable to support the “plenum” with or without reeds,
emphasizing the virtuosic pedal solos and chorale melodies in long passages entrusted to the feet.
The Regale 4', with its incisive timbre rich in colour, is used to state the “cantus firmus” in the tenor
in the numerous Chorale Preludes which call for a 4' Pedal solo.
Apart from all schematic family subdivisions, one can easily imagine the numerous and interesting
possible combinations which the HYMNUS IV offers, enhanced by the accurate timbre of every
stop.

COUPLERS
Couplers I-Pedal and II-Pedal allow those stops which have been drawn on Manuals I and II to play
on the Pedals also.
Coupler II-I adds the stops drawn on the Swell to the Great manual.
Thecorresponding controls appearas stoptabs ontheextreme rightof therelative section, asthumb
pistons under manual I.
The thumb pistons are reversible: pressing once activates the couplers; pressing again they are
deactivated. It is also possible to deactivate the couplers manually when they have been activated
with the thumb pistons and vice versa.
COMBINATION ACTION
HYMNUS IV offers 5 general combinations with automatic return to hand-set registration.
The corresponding controls appear as thumb pistons numbered from 1 to 5 under Manual I.
The LEDS indicating the setting of the 5 combinations are located above Manual II.

TO SET A COMBINATION
1) Press the tabs of the desired registration.
2) Press and HOLD the Fthumb piston and press any one of the thumb pistons numbered from 1 to 5.
3) Release both pistons. The selected registration is now memorised.
4) Bringalltabstozero,usingtheAthumbpistonandrepeattheoperationonthumbpistonswhich
are still available.
TO MODIFY A COMBINATION:
1) Press the numbered thumb piston corresponding to a previously memorised combination.
2) Add, cancel or change the stops required.
3) Press and HOLD the F thumb piston and press the same numbered piston that was pressed in
stage 1 above.
4) Release both pistons. The modified registration is now memorised.
Itispossibletoeffectatemporarychangetothecombinationbyhand,withouttheuseoftheFcontrol.
In this case, if the same numbered thumb piston is pressed, the original registration will be restored.
TO ERASE COMBINATIONS PARTIALLY OR TOTALLY:
1) Press the A control, checking that no stops are activated.
2) PressandHOLDtheF thumbpistonandpressthenumberedpistonrelativetothecombination
that is to be cancelled. Its contents are now erased.
AUTOMATIC RETURN TO HAND-SET REGISTRATION (O-PISTON)
Whileplayingwithahand-selectedregistration,itmaybenecessarytouseoneormorecombinations
that have already been fixed. In this way, the original hand-set registration will be either cancelled
or modified. However, by pressing the O piston, the original hand-set registration will be automati-
cally restored. If you wish to cancel this also, press the General Cancel piston A.

The Presets are activated through the corresponding thumb pistons located under Manual I. Their
contents are ADDED to the hand-set or combination registration inserted.
The contents of the Presets have been factory-set in the following manner:

PROGRAMMABILITY OF THE PRESETS
All the presets indicated above can be programmed by the organist in the following manner:
1) Select the desired registration by means of the stop tabs.
2) Press and HOLDthe F thumb piston (to the extreme left under Manual I) and press one of the
desired pistons.
3) Release both pistons. The selected registration in now memorised.
4) Press the General Cancel piston A to switch off the tabs.
Each time the reversible piston relative to the programmed preset is pressed, the stop tabs will
NOT illuminate.
To restore the factory-set Presets, carry out the operations described above after drawing the stops
indicated in the table.
BALANCES AND SWELL PEDAL
HYMNUS IV is equipped with volume controls for each of the following three sections:
1) GREAT ORGAN VOLUME slider control is placed next to the GREAT ORGAN stops.
2) PEDAL VOLUME slider control is placed next to the PEDAL stops.
3) SWELL balanced pedal is placed above the pedalboard.
Once the correct levels of Great and Pedal have been achieved, in relation to balance and
environmental acoustics, there should be no need to effect frequent changes later.
The Swell Pedal continuously changes the volume of the Swell section only, thus allowing any
dynamic effect.
This Pedal also modifies the timbre of the Recitativo stops, analogous to that which occurs in a pipe
organ with the closure of the swell shutters.

TRANSPOSER
The Transposer is particularly useful when providing accompaniment for voices or other instru-
ments. Adjusting the knob to the required position, it is possible to vary the pitch of the music by 6
SEMITONES BELOW or 3 SEMITONES ABOVE standard pitch. This avoids the necessity of
effecting laborious manual transpositions.
NOTE: Before any normal performance, care should be taken to ensure that the Transposer knob is
in its “0” position.
REVERBERATION
A digital Reverberation device has been incorporated into HYMNUS IV in order to improve the
sound performance of the instrument, especially in small rooms with little resonance.
The relative REVERB EFFECT and REVERB LEVEL controls are located in the appropriate
control panel (see next section).
CONTROLS AND CONNECTIONS.
The connection panel is situated in the upper part of the hollow between the manuals and the
pedalboard, to the extreme right of the console.

Thegeneralvolumeoftheinstrumentactssimultaneouslyontheinternalamplification,ontheAUX-
OUT and on the PHONES.
(The volume of an external amplifier is regulated by means of the MASTER command of the
INTERACTIVE PROGRAMMER).
REVERB EFFECT
With this control, it is possible to select, in increasing order of amplitude, 6 different reverberation
times.
The numbers are shown on the display the instant the reverb time is modified and remain visible for
approximately 10 seconds.
REVERB LEVEL
The control continuously regulates the volume of the reverberated signal.
PHONES
Headphone connection socket (Impedance: min. 30 ohms ./. max. 600 ohms.
By inserting the jack, the internal speakers will be automatically disengaged.
The volume of the headphones is regulated by the Master control (see above).

AUX-OUT LEFT/RIGHT
Output for stereo tape recording (Max. level: + 0 dB, 600 ohms).
MIDI IN - OUT - THRU
MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) is a standard code for interchange of data between
musical instruments. The principal advantage of MIDI lies in the possibility of connecting different
instruments by means of simple IN-OUT-THRU connections, permitting a reciprocal exchange of
information. The information exchanged via MIDI concerns the primary operations carried out by
the instruments (note on/off, various controls etc.). In practice, it is possible to “play” another MIDI
compatible instrument by means of the HYMNUS IV keyboards or vice-versa.
Connecting , for example, the HYMNUS IV MIDI OUT socket to the MIDI IN socket of another
instrument, it is possible to play both instruments by means of the HYMNUS IV keyboards and
pedalboard.TheMIDI THRUsocket enables morethan twoinstrumentsto beconnected with each
other, utilizing the first as principal transmitter (piloting instrument).
MIDI language can be received by most personal and home computers available on the market,
provided they are equipped with the special MIDI interface and MIDI IN/OUT ports. One of the
manyfeaturesofthisinterfacingisthecapabilityof“writing”themusicperformedontheHYMNUS
IV on a computerised stave in a very short time. Vice-versa, it is possible to “write” music on a
computer video which can be performed by the HYMNUS IV under the direct control of the
computer.
In order to make possible the interchange of MIDI data, it is necessary that both transmitter and
receiver communicate on the same MIDI channel, selected from any of the 16 available channels.
On the HYMNUS IV organ, MIDI channel selection is carried out by means of the remote control
(see the relevant operating instructions).
For additional information, refer to the MIDI IMPLEMENTATION CHART at the back of this
manual.

INTERNAL AMPLIFICATION
HYMNUSIVissuppliedwithinternalamplificationspeciallystudiedtoenhancethetonalresources
and vast sound channelling possibilities.
The presence of two small diffusers (Top Tweeters) pointing upwards permits an improved
expansion of the acoustic sounds in the environment, offering the organist maximum sound
definition, such as could be obtained by playing, for example, in the vicinity of the pipes.
Bymeans oftheremote control(Interactive Programmer)it ispossible tochoosetwo specialeffects
that broaden the sound front (Panoramic 1 and 2), as well as all the normal perspective sound
configurations (central peak, wing, lateral wing etc.), or else the complete exclusion of the “Top
Tweeters”,if required. Referto theINTERACTIVE PROGRAMMEROwner'smanual, SECTION
C/WINDCHEST LAYOUT, page 26.
Following the description relating to the 10 types of sound channelling, the section HOW TO
OPERATE should be modified as follows:
A) SECTION CHANNELLING.
HOW TO OPERATE
1) Press for approx. 3 seconds the WINDCHEST LAYOUT button: the display will show the
following information:

2) Press the §DECR. or ©INCR. buttons to select the section which requires the sound
channelling.
The sections will appear in the following order:
SWELL
GREAT
PEDAL FLUES
3) Press ENTER: the values or the configurations of the left or right channels (see previous
indications) will flash.
4) Press the §DECR. or ©INCR. buttons to select the required value.
5) Press the EXIT button once to proceed with the adjustment of another section, repeating the
operations at points 2-3-4.
Or: press the EXIT buttons twice to escape from the WINDCHEST LAYOUT control.
NB: the free selection of the section channelling is possible only when Panoramic = off.
B) USE OF THE “PANORAMIC 1 & 2” CONFIGURATION
These two positions create the effect of widening the general sound front within the instrument's
internal amplification.
Note that the position “Panoramic 1” retains the left/right (C /C sharp) sound channelling.

HOW TO OPERATE
1) Select the position “Panoramic = off” as already indicated.
2) Press ENTER: the word “off” will start to flash.
3) Press the §DECR. or ©INCR. buttons to select the positions “Panoramic = 1” or
“Panoramic = 2”.
NB: in cases where Panoramic 1 or 2 are selected, the possibility of regulating the section
channelling is excluded. Therefore, the display will NOT show the information as indicated
in paragraph A).
C) TO SWITCH THE TOP TWEETERS ON OR OFF
HOW TO OPERATE

Naturally, the instrument can also be connected to external amplifiers and acoustic speakers, as
described in the following paragraph.
1) With the position “Panoramic = off”, the external amplification will conform to the section
channelling selected by remote control.
2) Withtheposition“Panoramic=1”,theexternalamplificationwillbeautomaticallyconfigured
to left/right (c/c sharp).
3) Withtheposition“Panoramic=2”,theexternalamplificationwillbeautomatically configured
to mono (50% - 50%).

1) REMOTE BOX POWER SWITCH
(Remote control switch-on command for amplified speakers or speaker
amplifiers).
This generates a 12 V D.C. - 1A output signal which automatically switches
on all the speaker cabinets connected together simultaneously with the
switching on of the instrument. In the case of a short circuit, the connection
will be automatically interrupted. After eliminating the cause, normal opera-
tion will be restored when the instrument is switched on.
2) OUTPUTS (+6 dB/600 Ohms)

IMPORTANT WARNINGS
When positioning the speaker cabinets, it is not advisable to place the left and right
section too far away from each other (suggested distance: 2 to 4 metres).
The C/C sharp effect must be related to the windchests of a pipe organ.
It is not advisable to locate the speaker cabinets too far away from the HYMNUS IV
console: an excessive distance can cause an irritating time lag.
