INSTRUCTIONSforoperatingth<
Youhavejustpurchasedoneoftheworld'sfinest heaters.Itis
manufacturedinaccordancewithBritishStandard3300:1963,the
highestheatingappliancestandardintheworld.Usedinthe
rightwayitwillbeabsolutelysafeandodourless,but,evenif
youhaveusedanoilheaterbefore,pleaseREADtheseinstruc-
tionsbeforeyoulightft.

ALADDINBLUEFLAMEH
Beforeusingtheheateryoushouldremoveail
cardboardpackingpieces,etc.whichhavebeen
usedtoprotecttheheaterduringtransit.Release
springclip(H.208)sothatthewholeofthetopof
theheatercanbeloweredtoexposetheburner.
Removethepacking.Closethetopqftheheater
andmakesurethatthespringclipengagesfully
withthecatchbeforecarrying.
Unscrewfiller cap(H.216)whichwillbefoundon
thetopofthetank(H.213)exactlyoppositethe
wickwinder'W'andfill thetank,whichwillhold
onegallon(4.5litres),withbestqualityKERO-
SINE(PARAFFIN).WerecommendALADDIN
PINKparaffin(availableinU.K.andEire).Don't
usevaporisingoilorpower kerosine.NEVER
USEMotorFuel(Gasolene,Benzine,Essence,
etc.)orotherdangerousfuels.Replacefillercap
andwipethetopofthetankclean.Whenlighting
forthefirst time,orwhena newwick(H.210)has
beenfitted, leavetheheaterunlitfor anhourso
thatthewickcanbecomethoroughlysoaked.
Thisheaterwillrunforatleast16hoursona
filling. Donotburntheheaterdry;Theoil
gauge(H.217)willshowwhenthetankisap-
proximately(a)full,(b)| full,(c)\ full,(d){-
full,(e)empty(seefig. 2).

Releasespringclipandlowertopofheater.
Makesureflamespreader(H.2I2)isinposition
thecorrectwayupandpushedfullyhome.Turn
wickwinder'W'clockwiseuntilabout£ inchof
wickisvisibleabovethebumerbasketflange 'A'
andlightwick.Closetopofheaterandmakesure
thatthespringclipisproperlyfastened.The
flame cannowbeadjusted,withinthelimitsof
theburner,togivetheheatrequired.
Atnotimeshouldforcebeusedonthewick
winder.If difficulty isexperiencedinraisingthe
wicktheburnerbasket(H.209)shouldberemoved
andthetroublecorrected.(See"Tofîtnew
wick").Thecolouroftheflame willtellyouwhen
itissetwithinthesafe
limitsoftheburnerand
itshouldALWAYSbe

istoolowitwillbewhollyorpartly
yellowasinfig. 5.Ifitistoohighdis-
tinctyellowspikeswilldevelopasinfig.
6.Operatingtheburnerwitliinthese
limitsisoftheutnlostimportancesince,
althoughthereisnoimmediatedanger,
thepresenceofyellowflamemeansthat
theheaterisnotbeingusedcorrectlyand
smokingoroverheatingoftheburner
mayresuit.Whenusingtheheaterfor
thefirst timeturnthewickrightupand
rightdowna fewtimesandcomparethe
flame withtheillustrationsuntilyoucan
immediatelyrecognisea goodorbad
flame. Ifmaximumheatisrequiredit
willbefoundconvenienttoturnthe
wickupuntiltheyellowspikesappear
andthenturnitdownagainuntila
completelyblueflame isobtained.Once
theheaterhasbeensetwitha completely
blueflame itcanbeleftwithabsolute
confidencewithoutanyattentionwhat-
everuntilrefillingisrequired,provided
thatadequateventilationisallowed.If
itisimpossibletoobtaina completely
blueflame either(a)thewickneeds
cleaningorreplacingor(b)somepartof
theburnerhasbeenleftofforincorrectly
replacedor(c)somepartoftheburneris
damagedor(d)tankcontainswateror
othercontaminant.

Turnwickdown,lowertopofheaterandblow
out.Turnwickupagainandmakesureitisout.
Itisvitaltoensurethattheflame isout—alow
yellowflame willoverheattheburnerandcould
causesmoking.
Thefrequencyofwickcleaningwillvarywiththe
qualityofoilandtheheightofflame used.
Cleaningisnecessarywhenevertheflame de-
terioratesandatleastoncea weekwhenthe
heaterisusedcontinuously.Lowertopofheater
andremoveflame spreader.Turnwickdown
belowtheburnerbasketflange. Placethewick
cleaner(H.211 ) ontheburnerinplaceoftheflame
spreaderwhereitwillrestontheburnerbasket
flange. Withonehandturnthewickcleanerina
clockwisedirectionKEEPINGITPRESSED
DOWNONTOTHEBURNERBASKET
FLANGEandwiththeotherhandturnthewick
upslowly.Assoonasthewicktouchesthe

cleaner,blackcarbonwillappearthroughthe
gaps.Continueturningthecleanerandturning
thewickupGENTLYuntilnomorecarbon
cornesthroughthegapsand,providedthecleaner
hasbeenkeptpressedontotheburnerbasket
flange, a perfectlycleanedandshapedwickwill
resuit.Turnwickdownandremovecleaner.Take
outburnerbasketbyturninganti-clockwiseand
lifting.Cleanburnerbasketwitha cloth,particu-
larlytheflange atthetop.Whenreplacingmake
sureitiscorrectlyinposition.Alwayscleanwick
withthewickcleanerprovidedNEVERUSE
SCISSORS,RAZORBLADES,ETC.
Havingcleanedthewick,checkthatthereisno
fluff ordirtintheburnerbasket,theflame
spreader,orinthegapatthebottomofthe
chimney.Cleanthesepartswhennecessary; if
theholesbecomeblockedtheburnermaynot
functionproperly.Aswithailoilburnersitmust
bekeptCLEAN.Theflame spreaderandburner
basketarerustproofandmaybewashedinwarm
soapywater,bothbeingremovedforthispur-
pose.Neitherthewicknorthetankmustbe
washedwithwater;thetankshouldberinsedout
occasionallywithCLEANkerosine(parafïin).
Afterwashing,makesuretheburnerisdrybefore
replacing.Avoidcontactwithdirectheat.

Thisisonlynecessaryifthewickhasbecomevery
unevenduetopartialstarvationresultingfrom
abadlyfitted wick(see"Tofit newwick")or
incorrectorinfrequentwickcleaningorbyallow-
ingthetanktorundry.Emptytankasfaras
possible.Lowertopofheaterandadjustwick
sothattheLOWESTpartoftheburningedgeiL
islevelwiththeburnerbasketflange. LighttheRE-fHAR
wick,closethetopoftheheaterandallowittoIXt'vnHIi
burndry.Donotblowitout.Thewickmust^ WICK
nowbereshapedexactlyasincleaning.After
thisopérationthetankmustbefilled andthe
wickallowedtosoakforatleastanhourbefore
lighting.Anunpleasantsmellwillbegivenoff
duringre-charring.

Whenthewickcannotberaisedanyfurther
WITHOUTUSINGFORCEthewickneeds
replacing.Thewickisnotintendedtoburn
downtotheyellowbandwhichisusedtomaintain
theshapeofthewickonly.Ifforceisexerted
onthewickwinderitisliabletodamagethe
mechanism.
Toavoidhandlinga wickfullysoakedwith
kerosine(paraffin)itisbetter,thoughnotessen-
tial,toallowtheheatertoburndry,butasthe
wickitselfwillburnitisnotadvisabletoleave
theheaterina roomwherethisodourwouldbe
unpleasant.Byallowingtheheatertoburndry
onnormalflame thewickwillbedamaged,but
sinceinthiscaseitistobethrownawayitwill
notmatter.
Lowertopofheaterandremoveflame spreader
andburnerbasket.Raisethewicktoitsfullestex-
tent.Detachthetwowickcarrierarms'C\which

willnowbevisible,fromthebrassstudsonthe
wickbyspringingthemoutwardsandthenpulling
onetowardsyouandpushingtheotheraway
fromyouandremoveoldwick.Replacethe
flamespreader.Thiswillavoidtheyellowtape
ontheinsideofthewickcatchingonthetopof
thewicktube.Fitthenewwickovertheinner
wicktubesothatwhenloweredthebrassstuds
'B'willengagewiththewickcarrierarms.
Handlingthewickwelldowntoavoiddamag-
ingthetopsurface,easegentlydownuntil
thebrassstudsarelevelwiththewickcarrier
arms.Makesurethatbothtailsreachthe
bottomofthetank;thisnécessitâtespushingone
ofthetailsthroughthestirrup-likecarrierarms.
Failuretodosowillcausethatsideofthewick
tobestarvedresultingina poorflameandvery
unevenburningofthewick.Engagethewick
carrierarmswiththebrassstuds'B'onthewick
andreplacetheburnerbasket.Allowthewickto
soakforatleastonehourbeforelighting.
Removethetopcover(H.201)byturninganti-
clockwiseandlifting.

allowsfreemovementintheframe.Thismove-
mentmustnotbemistakenfora defectandno
