Garden Hutch
(GH50 Unassembled Kit)
Tools Required:
You will need a #2 Philips or Robertson screwdriver, a straight edge, a measuring tape and a pencil.
(silicone caulking for roof is optional and not supplied) A helper is advised in the assembly of this product.
NOTE: Construction of this product uses "shiplap" joinery for its superior strength and moisture shedding
design.
To properly use this type of joinery in the steps below it is important that the lip on one board overlaps the lip
on the next board and that all boards are fitted snuggly together. You will find some boards only have 1 lip -
these outer boards ensure a proper fit and finish along corners and edges.
Before proceeding lay out all parts as in diagram above

STEP 1. Build Side Walls
•Lay out side boards (A-F) good face down and make angled tops uniform as shown in
diagram.
•Place a side cleat (O) across top of boards and make cleat flush or even with angled
tops. Attach cleat using 1 ¼ inch screws. (Note – when cleats are properly centered
across boards the cleat should be about 1 inch short on both ends.)
•Measure 3 inches up from bottom of longest side boards (A & F). Set side cleat (O) at
3 inch mark and make flush with bottom of shorter wall boards. Attach using 1 ¼”
screws.
•Now measure 40 inches up on longest side boards (A & F). and attach another side
cleat (O) across wall boards using 1 ¼ inch screws. ( repeat for opposite wall)
STEP 2. Build Back Wall
•Lay out back boards (G,H) good face down and make tops of boards even
and edges square as shown in diagram.
•Set the “beveled” back cleat (R) across top of boards.
•Position cleat with the bevel face up and have sharp edge of bevel flush with
top of boards. Attach cleat using 1 ¼ inch inch screws.
•Measure 3 inches up from the 2 longest outside boards.
•Set back straight cleat (S) at 3 inch mark and make flush with bottom of
shorter wall boards. Attach using 1 ¼ inch inch screws.
•Now measure 40 inches up from bottom of the 2 longest outside boards and
attach another straight cleat (S) across wall boards using 1 ¼ inch screws.
•Attach foot to bottom of cleat using 1 ¾ inch screws.
STEP 3. Build Doors (2)
•Lay out door boards (J) and (J1) good face down and make tops of board’s even and edges square.
•Set a door cleat (P) across ends and place cross cleat (V) diagonally between them.
•Measure 4 inches from top of boards and attach door cleat (P) with 1 ¼ inch screws.
•Line up cross cleat (V) with end of door cleat and attach using 1 ¼ inch screws.
•Set another door cleat (P) across the bottom and attach with 1 ¼ inch screws.
•On outside face of door attach door hinges to line up with end of cleat as shown.
•Note: hinges must be placed as per diagram to avoid door sag.

STEP 4. Build Roof
•Lay out roof boards (K) finished side down with roof caps (L) on ends.
•Take care to keep all boards tight and even along edges.
•Center a roof cleat (Q) across roof boards and approx. 3
inches in from ends of boards.
•Attach cleats using 1 ¼ inch screws.
•OPTIONAL: To keep your roof water-tight run a thin bead
of silicone along each lip of roof boards.
STEP 5. Assemble Walls
•Raise the back wall and 1 of the side walls into an
upright position.
•Arrange so that tallest edge of side wall butts up to
inside edge of back wall.
•Keep all edges flush to back wall and attach back to
sides using 1 ¾ inch screws.
•Repeat for other side wall.
STEP 6. Attach Front Stiles and Rails
•Place front stiles (I) along front edge of sides, make flush with side and bottom and attach with 1 ¾ inch
screws.
•IMPORTANT: Measure and adjust front of hutch to be the same width on the outside as back of hutch
before attaching front rails in the step below.
•Position front bevel rail (T) along inside top lip of stiles and attach from inside
using 1 ¼ inch screws.
•Now attach front straight rail (U) (to bottom inside lip of front stiles) using 1 ¼ inch
screws. (keep in alignment with bottom side cleats)
STEP 7. Install Floor
•Layout and center floor boards (M, N), and attach using 1 ¼ inch screws.

STEP 8. Attach Roof
•Set roof assembly (step 4) on top of hutch walls, make roof boards flush with back of hutch.
•Allow roof boards to overhang at front.
•Set roof end caps (L) on top of hutch and attach to outside walls using 1 ¾ inch screws.
•Secure roof from inside using 1 ¾ inch screws along the underside of front bevel rail and back wall cleat.
•(silicone around outer lip is optional)
STEP 9. Install Corner Braces
•Lay hutch onto its back.
•On top corners of hutch attach 2 corner braces to front bevel rail and then to
each wall with 1 ¾" screws.
•On underside bottom corners of floor attach 4
corner braces to cleats using 1 ¾" screws.
STEP 10. Install Doors
•Lay hutch onto its back.
•Set doors into opening leaving an even space on both sides.
•Make doors flush with bottom rail and attach hinges to front wall.
•Attach foot to bottom of front rail with 1-3/4 inch screws.
STEP 11. Attach Handle and Latch
•Screw the 2 pieces of door handles together using 1 ¼ inch screws.
•Position door handle on front of hutch door and attach from back-side of
door using 1 ¾" screws. ( no pilot holes have been drilled)
•Set door latch above door handle and attach to door with 1 ¼ inch screw.
•On inside of door set spacer block on top of door cleat and flush with end
and attach using 1 ¼ inch screws. ( this is used for your inside latch)
•Now place a door latch directly on the spacer block and attach to block
using 1 ¼ inch screws.
STEP 12. Install Shelves
•Set 3 pieces of frame (W) and 1 piece of frame (X) on edge to make ‘box’ shape.
•Take care to keep edges flush and square. Fasten together with 1 ¼ inch screws.
•Note: frame (X) is the front of shelves. Repeat for 2
nd
shelf frame.
•Evenly space shelf lath (Y) across top of frames and attach using supplied nails.
•Rest shelf on middle wall cleats and attach shelf to walls using 1 ¼ inch screws.
•Attach 2nd shelf to the walls about 12 inches higher than the 1st.
•Line up shelf strut (Z) with pre-drilled holes on side of shelf frames (angled end up)
•Attach angled end of strut (Z) first to the roof using a 1 ¾ inch screw then attach the
strut to both shelves using 1 ¼ inch screws.
