Panel, manufactured
by Ameri -King Corporation, California,
U.S.A.
DESCRIPTION
The
AK-950
is a self-contained GPS 1
NAV
Switching
and .
Annunciator
Panel.
lt
combines ali the necessary
functions
required
for
switching
HSI 1 CDI data
inputs
between a
conventional
NA
V (VOR) receiver and the approach-certified
GPS
receiver.
ln
addition, the
AK-950
contains severa!
GPS
status annunciations used
to
indicate modes selected
by
the
front
panel
switches
and various
inputs
from
the GPS receiver.
Features include Incandescent lamps
with
16,000
hours
average lite,
built
in
Automatic
Dimming and Test
for
Annunciator
Panel.

Depending
upon
the
installation
and
approving
agency, you
may
be required
to
provide
additional
NA
V Source Select external
annunciators
near
the
HSI 1 CDI. Spare relay
contacts
on the
AK-950
connector
may
be used
for
this
purpose.
ADDITIONAL
RELAYS
The
AK-950
contains
3 relay pales. Some installations
may
require
more
than
24
pales
due
to
data lines, superflags, etc.
If
this
should
occur,
you
may
use one spare relay pole
ta
switch
additional relays. ln cases
where
it
may
be more desirable
to
have ali
the
relay
switching
done
at
a rem
ote
location, (i.e.:
remote
mounted
equipment),
one relay pole on the
AK-950
may
be used
for
switching
this
bank
of
relays. Please
note
that
the
maximum
relay
contact
rating
for
the
AK-950
is 2 amps
OC.
ROUTING
OF
CABLES
Care
must
be
taken
not
ta
bundle
the
AK-950
logic
and
law
level signal lines
with
any
high energy sources. Examples
of
these sources include
400
Hz AC,
Comm,
DME, HF and
transponder
transmitter
coax.
Always
use shielded
wire
when
shawn
on
the
installation
print.
A
void
sharp bends in cabling
and
routing
near
aircraft
control
cables.

EQUIPMENT
LIMITATIONS
The AK-950 series control units contain specifie dash numbers to be
used with various GPS receivers. The installer must match the correct
controller part number with the GPS receiver being installed.
This equipment GPSINAV switching & Annunciator Panel is approved
for installation with the following mode! number only:
GPS madel GNS 400 1500 1GNC 420 1520
Garmin Internationallnc.
Installation
of
this equipment to any other GPS is disapproved.
The condition and tests required for TSO approval
of
this article are
minimum performance standards.
lt
is
the responsibility
ofthose
desiring
to install this article either on or within a specifie type or class
of
aircraft
to determine that the aircraft installation conditions are within the TSO
standards. The article may be installed only
iffurther
evaluation by the
applicant documents an acceptable installation and is approved by the
Administrator.
NOTE: Anytime the AK-950 is disconnected or removed from the
aircraft, the HSI 1CDI will be inoperative in both
NA
V (VOR) and GPS.

when
unpacking
the
equipment.
Visual
inspection
of
the
equipment
for
evidence
of
damage
incurred
during
shipment.
Any
claim
should
be
promtly
filed
with
the
transportation
company.
Save
the
shipping
container
to
subtantiate
the
daim.
Retain
the
container
and
packaging
material
for
possible
future
use.
MECHANICAL
INSTALLATION
The
AK-950
is
designed
with
the
installer
in
mind.
Ali
accessories
which
are required
for
completing
system
installation
are
provided,
including
Pre-fabricated
Wiring
Cable
Assembly.
EOUIPMENT
LOCATION
The
AK-950
must
be
mounted
as close
to
the
pilot's
field
of
view
as
possible.
The
preferable
location
is near
the
HSI 1CDI
that
will
be
displaying
the
FPS
information.
The
unit
depth,
with
connector
atttached,
must
also be
taken
into
consideration.
Avoid
mounting
close
to
heater
vents
or
other
high
heat
sources.
The
indicator
is
secured
in place
behind
the
panel since
it
is
designed
for
rear
mount
only.
Make
a panel
cutout
as
shown
in Figure
2-1.
Secure
the
indicator
in place
with
four
4-40
x
3/8
to
1.0"
flat
head·
phillips
screws.
COOLING
No
direct
cooling
is required.
As
with
any
electronic
equipment.
overall
reliability
may
be increased
if
the
AK-950
is
not
located
near
any
high
heat
source
or
crowded
next
to
other
equipment.
Means
of
providing
a
gentle
air
flow
will be a plus.

switch

connect

mating
connector

the
AK-950.

switch

the
AK-950

come
on

AUTO
DIMMING
TEST:
A Photocell
provides
the
Auto
Dimming
function.
This
can be
tested
by
covering
the Photocell
by
hand and
observing
the
change in
brightness.
NOTE: 1. There is an
Adjustment
Potentiometer
located on
the side
of
the
unit.
Adjustment
should be made
when
the
unit
is installed in
aircraft,
and
with
night
time
lighting
conditions.
2. Rotate the
Potentiometer
clockwise
to
dim
the
annunciators. Rotate
the
Potentiometer
counter-clockwise
to
make
the
annunciators
brighter.
3. Do
not
use excessive
inward
force
on the
alignment
tool,
and
do
not
use excessive
rotational
force.

information

displayed
on the panel-mounted HSI or CDI

executing
an approach utilizing

This
Optional
Glide Slope 1ILS Override
Feature
will
force
the
AK-950
automatically
switch

NA
V
mode,
regardless

the
position

V/GPS
switch,

manufactured

Ameri-King
Corp. are guaranteed
against
defective
materials
and
workmanship
for
a period
of
two
years.
Any
equipment
found
to
be
defective
due
to
material and
workmanship
during
this
limited
warranty
will
be repaired and
put
in original
manufactured
operating
condition.
An
option
of
extended
third
and
fourth
year
limited
warranty
become
valid at
the
end
of
this
second year,
which
will
warrant
to
the original
owner.
This
Ameri-King
Corp.
warranty
is
void
unless
the
Warranty
Registration Card is filled
out
and
returned
to
Amer-King
Corp.
within
15
days
after
original
installation.
Ameri-King
Corp.'s
liability
under
this
warranty
is limited
to
servicing, repairing, replacing or
adjusting
any
equipment
returned prepaid
to
the
factory
by
express
written
or oral
authorization
for
that
purpose
and
to
repair or replace
defective
parts
thereof.
Repaired
equipment
will
be
returned
to
the
equipment
user
freight
pre-paid. Shipping charge
will
be paid one
way
only
by
Ameri-King
Corp.
Upon
discovery
of
a
condition
believed
to
be caused
by
a
defect
in
manufacturing,
Amer-King
Corp.
must
be
notified.
No
equipment
to
be
shipped
to
Ameri-King
Corp.
without
prior
authorization.
Any
equipment
returned
to
Ameri-King
Corp.
should
be
accompanied
by
a failure report, in
writing,
giving
full
particulars
in
support
of
the
claim.

limited
warranty

to

of

misuse

installation

or
negligent
