Getting Started
Loading batteries
Open the cover at the back of the remote
control unit, as pictured on the right. Insert two
AAA size batteries following the polarity (+ / -)
markings. Slide the cover back into position.
Precautions when using batteries
• CAUTION: Danger of explosion! Ensure to insert batteries according to the
polarity markings inside the battery compartment.
• Replace all batteries at the same time with fresh batteries of the same size
and type. Clean the battery and device contacts prior to installation.
• Do not mix old and new batteries, different types of battery (alkaline,
carbon-zinc or rechargeable), or rechargeable batteries of different
capacities. Mixing different types of battery could cause leakage or rupture.
• Note that there are chargeable and nonchargeable batteries. Do not
attempt to charge nonchargeable batteries.
• Remove the batteries when the unit is not in use for a long time to avoid
leakage. Batteries can leak chemicals that can damage electronic parts.
• Dispose of batteries promptly and properly, observing any local hazardous
waste regulations. Do not burn or bury them.
• Keep batteries away from children. If you suspect a battery may have been
swallowed, seek immediate medical assistance.
Using the remote control
• When using the remote control, aim it within
a 30º window at the remote control sensor, as
illustrated on the right. Make sure there are no
large obstacles between the remote control and
the unit.
• Do not drop the remote control unit; do not
subject it to physical shocks.
• The remote control may display erratic operation
or interference when it is exposed to bright
sunlight, lightning or fluorescent lighting. In such a case, move the unit
away from the cause of the interference.
• Keep the remote control dry. Wetting it may cause malfunction.
• Replace the batteries when remote control operation deteriorates.
• Do not use other remote equipment when operating this remote control.

Connecting the speakers
• Each speaker connection on the HTE-400 comprises a positive (+) and
negative (-) terminal. Make sure to match these up with the terminals on
the speakers themselves.
• Each speaker cable has two wires, and one of these will have a marking
to differentiate it from the other. Make sure to match the marking on the
wire with the positive (+) or negative (-) terminal on the HTE-400 and the
speakers.
1. Twist the exposed wire strands together.
2. Loosen the terminal at the back of the HTE-400 and insert the exposed wire.
3. Tighten the terminal.
4. Loosen the terminal at the back of the speakers by pressing down on the
clip and insert the exposed wire.

Connecting your TV and playback devices
Connecting to an HDTV
NOTE:
• The HDMI connection transfers uncompressed digital video as well as
almost every kind of digital audio.
• Most HDTVs are able to receive multichannel audio through an HDMI
connection. However, if you want to listen to the sound of the TV over the
A/V Receiver, you need to make a separate audio connection.
• The Audio Return Channel (ARC) feature in HDMI 1.4 specification enables
a TV, via a single HDMI cable, to send audio to an A/V Receiver thus
eliminating the need for any separate audio connection.
• In order to utilise the ARC feature, your TV must support ARC. Typically,
ARC compatible HDMI ports are labelled as ‘HDMI (ARC)’.

and the TV with either a digital optical, digital coaxial or an analog L/R RCA
audio cable.
3. Select the audio input source using the remote to match the type of audio
connection you have made:
a. Press the button on the remote or press the button on the front panel
repeatedly and select OPTICAL.

2.0CH (Stereo) sound mode by pressing the CH MODE button on the
remote.
• While the input source is HDMI, Optical or Coaxial and the input signal
