Brother 1034D Serger Quick Reference Guide
Threading
You will thread one spool at a time. You must thread the machine in the correct order.
Brother 1034D Serger Quick Reference Guide
Remember, some stitches use all 4 spools, but some use
only three spools. Refer to the Serger Techniques
booklet for detailed information on stitches.
1. Pull the grey thread tree up to its highest position.
2. Place spools of thread on the spool pins, and place
thread spool caps on top of spools. If you are using
very fine or silky thread, cover your spools of thread
with the nets in the supply compartment.
3. Turn thread tension knobs on the front of the machine
to “0”.
4. Open the front cover by pulling right then down.

right-most hole in the thread tree, from back to front.
2. Pull thread through the metal guide next to the
number “2” and then through the groove to the left of
the blue tension knob.
3. Continue down through the groove past the “4”.
4. Follow the blue line to the hook next to the blue
number “5”. Pull left from the hook through the two
metal prongs marked with blue dots. Then pull thread
through the hook marked “8”.

5. Next, pull the white lever with blue arrows all the way
to the right. Hook the thread around the prong on the
left side of this lever.
6. Once thread is wrapped around prong, push the white
lever in all the way back to the left until it clicks.

Removing/Replacing the Needles
1. Using the hexagonal wrench from the supplies bag,
loosen the small screw directly above the needles.
2. Grab the needles between your thumb and forefinger
and pull down and out.
3. To replace needles, hold the same way (both at the
same time) and insert the needles into the slot as far
as they will go.
4. Tighten the screw until snug.
5. To use only one needle, use the same method but
insert only one needle. Different stitches require the
