CONNECTION AND SETUP
Connecting a LAN-XI Module to a Network
Using DHCP
LAN-XI modules are configured to use a DHCP server by default.
When the front end is a DHCP client, simply connect it to the network
and network settings will be supplied by the DHCP server.
If the module has been set to a static IP address via the module’s
home page, you must reset the module to be a DHCP client:
1) Press and release the Control button on the front of the module
to display the menu
2) Scroll down the menu by pressing the button once for each menu
item.
3) Press and hold the Control button for 5 seconds while the cursor
is on ‘LAN reset’ in the display menu.
Using a Static IP
To assign the module a static IP, first connect the module directly to
the computer or through a DHCP network as explained above. Open
the LAN-XI module’s web page, by typing the IP address from the
front of the module into your web browser, and follow these steps:
1) Click Network.
2) Select Static.
3) Enter an IP address, and, if necessary, a mask and gateway.
4) Click Save changes.
The module now has a static IP.
Alternatively, use the Front-End Setup program, which works also if the
current IP address is not with your existing address range.

7
Connecting a LAN-XI Module Directly to a PC
This method only works when both the module and the computer are
configured to be DHCP clients. To reconfigure the module to be a
DHCP client, follow the instructions in “Connecting a LAN-XI Module
to a Network” on page 6.
To connect a LAN-XI module directly to a PC:
1) Connect the PC and LAN-XI module with a standard LAN cable and
wait until an IP address is obtained. The message that the PC may
give about having limited or no connectivity is an indication that
the connection is working.
An IP address in the default range 169.254.*.*, will be assigned to
the module and shown on its display.
2) Open a browser on your PC and enter the IP address to open the
front end’s web page (will also work on smartphones, tablets,
etc.).
Alternatively both the PC and the LAN-XI module may have static
addresses in the same subnet.
Setup of LAN-XI Notar
If your LAN-XI Notar was ordered at the same time as the LAN-XI module, then the LAN-XI Notar firmware and license will have been
installed and tested at Brüel & Kjær. Go to “Using LAN-XI Notar” on page 13.
If your LAN-XI Notar was ordered separately, go to “Installing a LAN-XI Notar License” on page 12.

8
LAN-XI FIRMWARE UPDATE
Brüel & Kjær continually updates LAN-XI firmware. To download a
firmware update to your LAN-XI modules, follow the directions in
“Connecting to a Front end with Front-end Setup” on page 10 or:
1) Go to www.bksv.com and select Service, User Support, Downloads
or
Connect to the module’s home page by typing the IP address from
the front of the module into your web browser and click
Downloads.
2) Select LAN-XI under Step 1 and LAN-XI Software Updates under
Step 2.
3) Click on the latest firmware link to download the firmware to any
location on your PC.

9
4) On your module’s home page, click Firmware.
5) Click Browse... and navigate to the file.
6) Click Start update.

10
CONNECTING TO A FRONT END WITH FRONT-END SETUP
To connect to one or more front ends:

2) If your firewall program tells you that the program is being
blocked, click Unblock – preferably in all types of domain (Home,
Work, Public).
3) Click Browse Devices.
4) Select one or more front ends.

6) Go to the Synchronisation tab and click Synch Setup….
7) Press <F1> or click Help and follow the help given there.
To save the configuration so that it can be used by PULSE:
8) Click Apply and Save Configuration.
If it is not possible to download the latest firmware from the front
end’s home page (see “LAN-XI Firmware Update” on page 8), use the
following procedure to install the firmware version that was included
in your PULSE installation:
9) Click Firmware.
10)If the New Version and the Current Version do not match
(indicated by a yellow background in the Current Version Column),
click Start Update.
HINT: When downloading firmware to multiple modules, it is a lot faster to use the Front-end Setup program. This uses the firmware from the following
folder (can vary with language): C:\Program Files (x86)\Bruel and Kjaer\PULSE\IdaSW\PromUpdate or C:\Program Files\Bruel and Kjaer\PULSE
Reflex\idasw\PromUpdate

USING POWER OVER ETHERNET (POE)
LAN-XI modules can receive power over their ethernet cables from
PoE switches, such as PULSE Measurement System Switch UA-0265
(8-port LAN-switch with PoE and PTPv2 Support), or from PoE
injectors, such as the ZyXEL® PoE-12 Power over Ethernet injector
shown.
Powering a module in this way is easy – simply connect the ethernet
cable.
