GENERAL INFORMATION
The Chemetron FireSystems Gamma Series Systems are
automatic suppression systems using the FM-200 chemi-
calagent and consisting of four basic components and
their associated accessories.
FM-200 Components
Control Panels
Detection and Alarm Devices
Completer Kits
Features
The FM-200 components consist of agent containers,
1
container supports (racks), and discharge nozzles.
The control panel is the brains of the system and is
2
used tomonitor the detection and accessories.
The detection, alarm devices, and accessories arethe
3
external devices that actas the eyes and voiceof the
system as they giveaudible or visual signals.
The completer kits consist of warning signs, hoses,
4
connection fittings,pressuregauges or solenoid
valves, and the actuator required to operatethe
cylinder valve.
The system and its components areagencytested for total
flooding applications and should be used in accordance
with the guidelines contained in National FireProtection
Association 2001. Atotal flooding application can be de-
fined as injecting FM-200 intoan enclosureor volume
having the structural integritytoretain the agent during
and after discharge. The design of such asystem requires
that theFM-200 chemical agent be discharged from its
container within 10 seconds and be thoroughly mixed
throughout the protected volume,reaching aminimum
concentration level of 7%, but not exceeding 9% in
normally occupied spaces.
GAMMA SERIES SYSTEM EQUIPMENT
DESCRIPTION
The Gamma System permits higher discharge rates and is
particularly adaptable toareas requiring larger quantities
of FM-200. Adescription of the various equipment com-
ponents unique tothe Gamma System follows.
Cylinder and ValveAssembly
Gamma Series cylinders areavailable in
four different capacities and are
charged with FM-200 toafilling densi-
tyup to70 lb/ft(1121 kg/m )of cylin-
3 3
der volume.All cylinders aresuper-
pressurized with drynitrogen toa
pressureof 360 psig (2482 kPa), at
70°F (21°C). Each cylinder is equipped
with an identification nameplateindi-
cating the quantityof FM-200.
Thestandardcylinder assembly,hav-
ing arigid dip tube,is designed for
mounting in avertical position only.
The cylinder assembly is composed of
acylinder,dip tube,and cylinder
valve.

outlet fitting can be removed for replacement if
necessary.
COMPLETER KIT
Either aprimaryor slavecompleter kit is required to
completethe installation of each FM-200 cylinder. The
components included in the primaryand slavecompleter
kits aredetailed in the following chart.

Solenoid Pilot ValveAssembly
The system utilizes asolenoid pilot valveassembly topro-
vide pilot pressurefor actuation. The solenoid must be
electrically supervised byarecognized firesuppression
system control panel.
The solenoid pilot valveassembly includes apressure
gauge and adapter with swivel nut, elbow, and O-ring seal
that is attached tothe pressuregauge connection of the
cylinder valve.
Manual-Pneumatic Actuator -S/N 10610729
This deviceis required for the manual actuation of acylin-
der and is attached toacheck valveconnection port. This
is adual purpose device, having an actuating piston con-
nected toapin toupset the fill check valvewhen pilot
pressureis applied tothe piston. With the check valve
open, cylinder pressureis applied through the pilot con-
nectiontothe piston of the pneumatic actuator, thereby
opening the cylinder todischarge its contents.
Pneumatic Actuator -S/N 10630022
The pneumatic actuator has apis-
ton connected toaprobe toupset
the connection check valve
when pilot pressureis applied
tothe piston. With the check
valveopen, pressureabovethe
piston of the cylinder valve
is rapidly vented to atmo-
sphere,therebycausing
the cylinder valvetoopen.

PHYSICAL/CHEMICAL PROPERTIES
FM-200 (CF CHFCF -heptafluoropropane) is acompound that
3 3
consistsof carbon, fluorine and hydrogen. Itis colorless,
odorless,electrically non-conductive,and suppresses fire by
interrupting the combustion processand affecting the available
oxygen content in the area of the discharge.
FM-200is clean, efficient,environmentally acceptable,and
leaves no residue, thus minimizing anydowntime after afire.
If exposed to temperatures greater than 1300°F,toxic products
of decomposition (hydrogen fluoride) are formed. The system is
designed to discharge in 10 seconds or less to minimizethe
amount of toxic byproductformed during extinguishment of
flames. Most materials contained in areas protected byFM-200,
such as aluminum, brass, rubber, plastics, steel, and electronic
components, are unaffected when exposed to FM-200.
FM-200 isstored as aliquid in steel containers and super-
pressurized with nitrogen to 360 psig (2482 kPa) to increase its
discharge flowcharacteristics.When discharged,FM-200 will
vaporizeat the discharge nozzles and effectively mixwith the air
throughout the protected area.
SAFETYCONSIDERATIONS
In accordance with NFPA Standard 2001 and the EPA Significant
New AlternativeProgram (SNAP), personnel exposure to FM-200
total flooding system concentrations shall be limited to the
following:
The discharge of FM-200 into ahazard maycause areduction in
visibilityfor abrief period.Anydirectcontactwith the agentcan
cause frostbite.
Acylinder containing FM-200 should be carefully handled. All
anti-recoil devices must be in place atall times when the
cylinder is not restrained.
The Material SafetyData Sheet (MSDS) covering FM-200 should
be read and understood prior to working with the agent.
