Chainsaw warnings
• Keep all body parts away from thechainsaw when thechain is moving.
• Make sure that thesaw chain is not in contact with anything when thechainsaw is started.
• A moment’s carelessness whilst using thechainsaw can lead to thechain snagging on your clothing
or a part of your body.
• Always hold therear handle of thechainsaw in your right hand and thefront handle in your left hand.
Holding thechainsaw with thewrong hands increases therisk of injury and should be avoided.
• Use protective eyewear and hearing protection. In addition, it is recommended that personal protection
equipment for thehead, hands, legs and feet are also worn. Wearing thecorrect protective equipment
reduces therisk of injury from flying objects and accidental contact with thesaw chain.
• Do not use thechainsaw whilst up in atree. Using achainsaw whilst in atree can lead to personal injury.
• Make sure that you are steady and well-balanced and only use thechainsaw when standing on firm, level
ground, not steep gradients. Slippery or unstable working positions such as ladders can lead to loss of
balance and loss of control over thechainsaw.
• When felling trees or lopping off thick branches that are under tension or compression, you should always
be prepared for movement. The sudden release of tension in thefibres of thetree can spring back towards
thechainsaw and cause theuser to lose control.
• Be very careful when sawing shrubs and shoots. Thin twigs can get caught in thesawchain and be
projected towards you or cause you to lose your balance.
• Always carry thechainsaw by thefront handle with themotor switched off and theguide bar pointing away
from your body. Always fit thecover over theguide bar when transporting thechainsaw. Correct use and
handling of thechainsaw will minimize your chances of coming into contact with therotating sawchain.
• Always follow themanual’s recommendations regarding lubrication, chain tensioning and replacement of
accessories. An incorrectly tensioned or lubricated sawchain can snap or increase therisk of kickbacks.
• Always keep thehandles dry, clean and free of oil and grease. Oily and greasy handles are slippery and can
cause you to lose control of thechainsaw.
• Saw only wood. Do not use thechainsaw for any purpose other than that for which it was intended.
For example: Never saw plastic, brick or other building material not made of wood. Using thechainsaw
for another purpose than that for which it was intended can be dangerous.
Kickback – causes and preventive measures
• Kickback happens when theguide bar or its nose comes into contact with anobject or when thewood
being sawed closes together and pinches thechain.
• When theguide bar nose hits anobject it can cause sudden uncontrolled movement of theguide bar
upwards and backwards towards theuser.
• If thesawchain is pinched it can also cause theguide bar to kick back towards theuser.
• Any of theabove occurances can cause theuser to lose control and result in serious injury. Never rely
entirely on thesaw’s built-in safety features. As theuser of thechainsaw you are always responsible for
taking all possible precautionary measures to prevent accidents.
• Kickback is aresult of misuse and/or incorrect technique or poor working environment. It can be prevented
by taking thefollowing precations:
• Hold thehandles of thechainsaw firmly with both hands using all your fingers and thumbs. Keep your body
and arms in such aposition that you can keep your balance if akickback should occur. The force of akickback
can be controlled by theuser if theproper precautions have been taken. Do not let go off the handles.
• Do not over-reach and always keep thesaw below chest height. This helps prevent thenose of theguide bar
from coming into contact with obstructions unintentionally and gives you better control over thechainsaw if
anything untoward should happen.
• Use only replacement guide bars and chains of thetypes specified by themanufacturer. Use of incorrect
guide bars and/or chains can result in thechain coming off or kickback.
• Follow themanufacturer’s instructions regarding sharpening and maintenance. Grinding therakers too much
increases therisk of kickback.
