TRAINING:
• Readthisoperator’smanualcarefully. Becomefamiliar
withthecontrolsandknowhowtooperateyourmower
properly. Learn how to quickly stop mower.
• Do not allow children to use your mower. Never allow
adults to use mower without proper instructions.
• Keeptheareaofoperationclearofallpersons,especially
small children and pets.
• Use mower only as the manufacturer intended and as
described in this manual.
• Donotoperatemowerifithasbeendroppedordamaged
in any manner. Always have damage repaired before
usingyourmower.
• Do not use accessory attachments that are not
recommended by the manufacturer. Use of such
attachments may be hazardous.
• Theblade turnswhen theengine isrunning.
PREPARATION:
• Always thoroughly check the area to be mowed and
clear it of all stones, sticks, wires, bones, and other
foreign objects. These objects will be thrown by the
blade and can cause severe injury.
• Alwayswearsafetyglassesoreyeshieldswhenstarting
andwhileusingyourmower.
• Dressproperly. Donotoperatemowerwhenbarefootor
wearingopensandals. Wearonlysolidshoeswithgood
tractionwhenmowing.
• Check fuel tank before starting engine. Do not fill gas
tank indoors, when the engine is running or when the
engine is hot. Allow the engine to cool for several
minutesbeforefillingthegastank. Cleanoffanyspilled
gasolinebeforestartingtheengine.
• Alwaysmakewheelheightadjustmentsbeforestarting
yourmower. Neverattempt to dothis while theengine
isrunning.
• Mow only in daylight or good artificial light.
OPERATION:
• Keepyour eyes and mind on your mowerand the area
being cut. Do not let other interests distract you.
• Do not mow wet or slippery grass. Never run while
operatingyourmower. Alwaysbesureofyourfooting-
keep a firm hold on the handles and walk.
• Do not put hands or feet near or under rotating parts.
Keep clear of the discharge opening at all times.
• Always stop the engine whenever you leave or are not
using yourmower,orbeforecrossingdriveways,walks,
roads,andanygravel-coveredareas.
• Never direct discharge of material toward bystanders
norallowanyonenearthemowerwhileyouareoperating
it.
• Before cleaning, inspecting, or repairing your mower,
stoptheengineandmakeabsolutelysurethebladeand
all moving parts have stopped. Then disconnect the
sparkplugwireandkeepitawayfromthesparkplugto
preventaccidental starting.
• Do not continue to run your mower if you hit a foreign
object. Followtheprocedureoutlinedabove,thenrepair
anydamagebeforerestartingandoperatingyoumower.
• Donotchangethegovernorsettingsoroverspeedthe
engine. Enginedamageorpersonalinjurymayresult.
• Do not operate your mower if it vibrates abnormally.
Excessive vibration is an indication of damage; stop
theengine,safelycheckfor the cause ofvibrationand
repairasrequired.
• Do not run the engine indoors. Exhaust fumes are
dangerous.
• Nevercutgrassbypullingthemowertowardsyou. Mow
across the face of slopes, never up and down or you
mightloseyourfooting. Donotmowexcessivelysteep
slopes. Use caution when operating the mower on
uneventerrainorwhenchangingdirections- maintain
goodfooting.
• Neveroperateyourmowerwithoutproperguards,plates,
grass catcher or other safety devices in place.
MAINTENANCEANDSTORAGE:
• Checkthebladeandtheenginemountingboltsoftento
besuretheyaretightenedproperly.
• Check all bolts, nuts and screws at frequent intervals
forpropertightnesstobesuremowerisinsafeworking
condition.
• Keep all safety devices in place and working.
• To reduce fire hazard, keep the engine free of grass,
leaves or excessive grease and oil.
• Check grass catcher often for deterioration and wear
andreplacewornbags. Useonlyreplacementbagsthat
arerecommendedbyandcomplywithspecificationsof
themanufacturerofyourmower.
• Always keep a sharp blade on your mower.
• Allow engine to cool before storing in any enclosure.
• Neverstoremowerwithfuelinthetankinsideabuilding
where fumes may reach an open flame or an ignition
source such as a hot water heater, space heater,
clothes dryer, etc.

For Two (2) years from date of purchase Sears Canada, Inc. will repair or replace at Sears option free of charge parts which
are defective as a result of material or workmanship.
COMMERCIAL OR RENTAL USE:
Warranty on Power Mower (Gas) will be ninety (90) days from date of purchase if used for commercial or rental purposes.
This Warranty does NOT cover:
1. Pre-delivery set-up.
2. Expendable items which become worn during normal use, such as rotary mower blades, blade adapters, belts,
filters and spark plugs.
3. Repairs necessary because of operator abuse or negligence, including bent crankshafts and the failure to
operate and maintain the equipment according to the instructions contained in the Owner’s Manual.
Warranty service is available by returning the Craftsman Power Mower to the nearest Sears Service Centre/Department in
Canada. This warranty applies only while this product is in use in Canada.
This warranty is in addition to any statutory warranty and does not exclude or limit legal rights you may have but shall run
concurrently with applicable provincial legislation. Furthermore, some provinces do NOT allow limitation on how long an
implied warranty will last so the above limitations may not apply to you.

Your new lawn mower has been assembled at the factory
with the exception of those parts left unassembled for
shippingpurposes. Toensuresafeandproperoperationof
yourlawnmower,allpartsandhardwareyouassemblemust
be tightened securely. Use the correct tools as necessary
toensurepropertightness. Allpartssuchasnuts,washers,
bolts,etc.,necessarytocompletetheassemblyhavebeen
placed in the parts bag.
TO REMOVE LAWN MOWER FROM
CARTON
• Removeloosepartsincludedwith mower.
• Cutdowntwoendcornersof cartonandlayendpanel
down flat.
• Removeallpackingmaterialsexceptpaddingbetween
upperandlower handleandpadding holdingoperator
presencecontrolbartoupperhandle.
• Roll lawn mower out of carton and check carton
thoroughlyforadditionallooseparts.
HOWTOSET UPYOUR LAWN MOWER
TO UNFOLD HANDLE (See Figs. 1A & 1B)
IMPORTANT: UNFOLD HANDLE CAREFULLY SO AS
NOT TO PINCH OR DAMAGE CONTROL CABLES.
• Raise lower handle section to operating position and
squeezethebottomendsof lowerhandletowardseach
otheruntilthepinin handle can beinsertedintooneof
thethree heightadjustment holes.
• Removeprotectivepadding,raiseupperhandlesection
tooperatingpositionandtightenhandleknobssecurely.
• Removeanypackingmaterialfromaroundcontrolbar.
• Yourhandlesmaybeadjustedforyourmowingcomfort.

• Putgrasscatcherframeintograssbagwithrigidpartof
bag on the bottom. Make sure the frame handle is
outside of the bag top.
• Slip vinyl bindings over frame.
NOTE: Ifvinylbindingsaretoostiff,holdtheminwarmwater
for a few minutes. If bag gets wet, let it dry before using.
• Close the lift top lid. Lift top lid must be closed while
operatinglawnmower.
• Lifttherear onthemowerandplacethegrasscatcher
frame hooks into the slots of the rear door.
• Thegrasscatcherissecuredtothelawnmowerhousing
when the rear door is lowered onto the grass catcher
frame.

Theoperationofanylawnmowercan result in foreign objectsthrownintotheeyes,whichcan
resultin severe eye damage. Always wearsafety glasses or eye shields while operating your
lawnmowerorperforminganyadjustmentsorrepairs. Werecommendwidevisionsafetymask
over spectacles or standard safety glasses.

ENGINE SPEED
The engine speed was set at the factory for optimum
performance. Speed is not adjustable.
ENGINE ZONE CONTROL
CAUTION: Federalregulationsrequire
anenginecontroltobeinstalledonthis
lawn mower in order to minimize the
riskofbladecontactinjury.Donotunder
anycircumstancesattempttodefeatthe
function of the operator control. The
bladeturnswhentheengineisrunning.

plug in a safe place.
• You can now install grass catcher.
• Toconverttomulchingordischargingoperation,install
mulcherplugintoreardischargeopeningofmower.
SIDE DISCHARGING (See Fig. 5B) -
• Mulcher plug must be installed into rear discharge
openingofmower(see above instructions).
• Openmulcherdoor andinstalldischargedeflectorunder
guardasshown.
• Mowerisnowreadyfordischargingoperation.
• Toconverttomulchingorbaggingoperation,discharge
deflector must be removed and mulcher door must be
closed.
BEFORE STARTING ENGINE
OIL (See Fig. 7)
Your lawn mower is shipped without oil in the engine.
• Besuremowerislevelandareaaroundoilfillisclean.
• Remove engine oil cap and fill to the full line on the
dipstick.

TO START ENGINE
• To start a cold engine, push primer five (5) times before
trying to start. Use a firm push. This step is not usually
necessarywhenstartinganenginewhichhasalreadyrun
for a few minutes..
• Holdoperatorpresencecontrolbardowntothehandleand
pull starter handle quickly. Do not allow starter rope to
snap back.
• Tostopengine,releaseoperatorpresencecontrolbar.
NOTE: Incoolerweatheritmaybenecessarytorepeatpriming
steps. Inwarmerweatheroverprimingmaycausefloodingand
enginewillnotstart. Ifyoudofloodengine,waitafewminutes
before attempting to start and do not repeat priming steps.
MULCHINGMOWINGTIPS
IMPORTANT: FORBESTPERFORMANCE,KEEPMOWER
HOUSING FREE OF BUILT-UP GRASS AND TRASH. SEE
"CLEANING" IN MAINTENANCE SECTION OF THIS
MANUAL.
• Thespecialmulchingbladewillrecutthegrassclippings
manytimesandreducetheminsizesothatastheyfall
onto the lawn they will disperse into the grass and not
be noticed. Also, the mulched grass will biodegrade
quicklytoprovidenutrientsforthelawn. Alwaysmulch
with your highest engine (blade) speed as this will
provide the best recutting action of the blades.
• Avoidcuttingyourlawnwhenitiswet. Wetgrasstends
toformclumpsandinterfereswiththemulchingaction.
Thebesttimetomowyourlawnistheearly afternoon.
Atthistimethegrass has dried andthenewlycutarea
will not be exposed to the direct sun.
• For best results, adjust the lawn mower cutting height
sothatthelawnmowercutsoffonlythetopone-thirdof
thegrassblades (SeeFig.8). Ifthelawnisovergrown
it will be necessary to raise the height of cut to reduce
pushingeffortandtokeepfromoverloadingtheengine
and leaving clumps of mulched grass. For extremely
heavymulching,reduceyourwidthofcutbyoverlapping
previously cut path and mow slowly.
• Certaintypesofgrassandgrassconditionsmayrequire
that an area be mulched a second time to completely
hide the clippings. When doing a second cut, mow
across or perpendicular to the first cut path.
• Changeyourcuttingpattern from weektoweek. Mow
northtosouthoneweekthenchangetoeasttowestthe
nextweek. Thiswillhelppreventmattingandgraining
of the lawn.

MOWING TIPS
• Formostcuttingconditionsandbetterbaggingperformance,
the engine speed should be set in the fast position.
• Undercertainconditions,suchaswhenmowingverytall
grass, raise the mower height on the first cut to reduce
pushing effort, to avoid overheating the engine, and to
avoidleavingclumpsofgrassclippings. Makethesecond
cut to the desired height.
• For extremely heavy cutting, reduce the width of cut.
• Forsidedischargelawnmowers,cutinacounterclockwise
direction, starting at the outside of the area to be cut, in
ordertospreadgrassclippingsmoreevenlyandtoputless
load on the engine. To keep clippings off of walkways,
flower beds, etc., make the first cuts in a clockwise
direction.
• Pores in cloth grass catchers can become filled with dirt
anddust with use and thecatcher will collect less grass.
Topreventthis,regularlyhosecatcheroffwithwaterand
letdry beforeuse.

OPERATION
NOTE: Allow oil to settle down into engine for accurate
dipstickreading.
• Engine holds 20 ozs. of oil. For type and grade of oil
to use, see "ENGINE" in Customer Responsibilities
section of this manual.
• Pour oil slowly. Do not over fill.

TO REPLACE BLADE (See Fig. 9)
• Positionthebladeadapterontheenginecrankshaft. Be
surekeyinadapterandcrankshaft keywayarealigned.
• Positionbladeonthebladeadapteraligningthetwo(2)
holes in the blade with the raised lugs on the adapter.
• Besurethetrailingedgeofblade(oppositesharpedge)
isup towardthe engine.
• Installthebladeboltwiththelockwasherandhardened
washerintobladeadapterandcrankshaft.
• Use block of wood between blade and lawn mower
housing and tighten the blade bolt, turning clockwise.
• Therecommended tightening torqueis 35-40 ft. lbs.
IMPORTANT: BLADEBOLTISGRADE8HEATTREATED.
TOSHARPEN BLADE
NOTE: Wedonotrecommendsharpeningblade-butifyou
do, be sure the blade is balanced.
Care should be taken to keep the blade balanced. An
unbalancedbladewillcauseeventualdamagetolawnmower
orengine.
• Thebladecanbesharpenedwithafileoronagrinding
wheel. Donotattempttosharpenwhileonthemower.
• Tocheckbladebalance,driveanailintoabeamorwall.
Leave about one inch of the straight nail exposed.
Place center hole of blade over the head of the nail. If
blade is balanced, it should remain in a horizontal
position. If either end of the blade moves downward,
sharpen the heavy end until the blade is balanced.
GRASSCATCHER
• The grass catcher may be hosed with water, but must
bedry whenused.
• Check your grass catcher often for damage or
deterioration. Through normal use it will wear. If
catcher needs replacing, replace only with a
manufacturerapprovedreplacementcatcher. Givethe
lawnmowermodelnumberwhenordering.

ENGINE
LUBRICATION
Use only high quality detergent oil rated with API service
classificationSForSG. Selecttheoil'sSAEviscositygrade
accordingtoyourexpectedoperatingtemperature.
NOTE: Although multi-viscosity oils (5W30, 10W30 etc.)
improve starting in cold weather, these multi-viscosity oils
will result in increased oil consumption when used above
32°F. Checkyour engineoil levelmore frequentlyto avoid
possibleenginedamagefromrunninglowonoil.
Change the oil after every 25 hours of operation or at least
onceayearifthelawnmowerisnotusedfor25hoursinone
year.
Checkthecrankcaseoillevelbeforestartingtheengineand
aftereachfive(5)hours of continuous use.Tightenoilplug
securely each time you check the oil level.
TO CHANGE ENGINE OIL (See Fig. 11)
NOTE: Beforetippinglawnmowertodrainoil,drainfueltank
by running engine until fuel tank is empty.
• Disconnectspark plug wire from sparkplug and place
wire where it cannot come in contact with spark plug.
• Remove engine oil cap; lay aside on a clean surface.
• Tiplawn mower on its side and drainoil into a suitable
container. Rocklawnmowerbackandforthtoremove
any oil trapped inside of engine.
• Wipe off any spilled oil on lawn mower and on side of
engine.
• Fill engine with oil. Fill only to the "FULL" line on the
dipstick. DO NOT OVER FILL.
• Replaceengineoilcap.
• Reconnect spark plug wire to spark plug.

DRIVE WHEELS (See Fig. 10)
Checkreardrivewheelseachtimeyoumowtobesurethey
move freely. The wheels not turning freely means trash,
grasscuttings,etc.,maybeinsidethedrivewheelanddust
cover area and must be cleaned out to free drive wheels.
If necessary to clean the drive wheels, check both rear
wheels.
• Remove hubcaps and locknuts.
• Removewheels from wheel adjuster axles.
• Removeanytrashorgrasscuttingsfrominsidethedust
cover,pinionand/or drive wheelgear teeth.
• Ifyouremovethedrivepinions,cleanandlubricatewith
spraylubricantordrypowderedgraphitetypelubricant
before reinstalling. Do not use oil or grease.
• The pinion gear, on both sides of the mower, are the
same, however, they must be installed correctly. If
installed incorrectly, the drive system will not work.
• Therearearrowsembossedonbothsidesofthepinion
gear. Withthearrowatthetopofthepinion, thearrow
mustpoint towards front of mower. Ifthe arrow points
to the rear, turn the pinion around and assemble to
mower.
• Place wheels back on adjuster axles.
• Replacelocknuts andhubcaps.

Replace the air filter every year, more often if you mow in
very dusty, dirty conditions. Do not wash air filter.
TO CHANGE AIR FILTER (See Fig. 12)
• Remove the air filter by turning clockwise to the stop
and pull away from collar.
• Remove filter from inside of cover.
• Clean the inside of the cover and the collar to remove
anydirt accumulation.
• Insert new filter into cover.
• Put air filter cover and filter into collar aligning the tab
with the slot.
• Pushinoncoverandturncounterclockwisetotighten.

REARDEFLECTOR
Thereardeflector,attachedbetweentherearwheelsofyour
lawn mower, is provided to minimize the possibility that
objectswillbethrownouttherearofthelawnmowerintothe
operator's mowing position. If the rear deflector becomes
damaged,itshouldbereplaced.
CAUTION: BEFOREPERFORMINGANYSERVICEORADJUSTMENTS:
• Release control bar and stop engine.
• Make sure the blade and all moving parts have completely stopped.
• Disconnect spark plug wire from spark plug and place where it cannot come in contact with plug.

you believe that the engine is running too fast or too slow,
take your lawn mower to an authorized service center for

CARBURETOR
Your carburetor has a non-adjustable fixed main jet for
mixturecontrol. Ifyourenginedoesnotoperateproperlydue
tosuspectedcarburetorproblems,takeyourlawnmowerto
anauthorizedservicecenterforrepairand/oradjustment.
IMPORTANT: NEVER TAMPER WITH THE ENGINE
GOVERNOR, WHICH IS FACTORY SET FOR PROPER

STORAGE
CAUTION: Neverstorethelawnmower

storing in any enclosure.
Immediatelyprepareyourlawnmowerforstorageattheend
of the season or if the unit will not be used for 30 days or
more.
LAWN MOWER
Whenlawnmoweristobestoredforaperiodoftime,clean
it thoroughly, remove all dirt, grease, leaves, etc. Store in
a clean, dry area.
• Clean entire lawn mower (See "CLEANING" in the
Customer Responsibilities section of this manual).
• Lubricate as shown in the Customer Responsibilities
section of this manual.
• Be sure that all nuts, bolts, screws, and pins are
securelyfastened. Inspect movingpartsfordamage,
breakage and wear. Replace if necessary.
• Touch up all rusted or chipped paint surfaces; sand
lightlybeforepainting.
ENGINE
FUEL SYSTEM
IMPORTANT: IT IS IMPORTANT TO PREVENT GUM
DEPOSITSFROMFORMINGINESSENTIALFUELSYSTEM
PARTS SUCH AS CARBURETOR, FUEL FILTER, FUEL
HOSE, OR TANK DURING STORAGE. ALSO,
EXPERIENCE INDICATES THAT ALCOHOL BLENDED
FUELS (CALLED GASOHOL OR USING ETHANOL OR
METHANOL) CAN ATTRACT MOISTURE WHICH LEADS
TO SEPARATION AND FORMATION OF ACIDS DURING
STORAGE. ACIDIC GAS CAN DAMAGE THE FUEL
SYSTEM OF AN ENGINE WHILE IN STORAGE.
• Drain the fuel tank.
• Start the engine and let it run until the fuel lines and
carburetorareempty.
• Neveruseengineorcarburetorcleanerproductsinthe
fuel tank or permanent damage may occur.
• Use fresh fuel next season.
NOTE: Fuel stabilizer is an acceptable alternative in
minimizingtheformationoffuelgumdepositsduringstorage.
Add stabilizer to gasoline in fuel tank or storage container.
Always follow the mix ratio found on stabilizer container.
Runengineatleast10minutesafteraddingstabilizertoallow
the stabilizer to reach the carburetor. Do not drain the gas
tank and carburetor if using fuel stabilizer.
ENGINEOIL
Drainoil(withenginewarm)andreplacewithcleanengineoil.
(See"ENGINE" intheCustomerResponsibilitiessectionof
thismanual).
CYLINDER
• Removesparkplug.
• Pour one ounce (29 ml) of oil through spark plug hole
into cylinder.
• Pull starter handle slowly a few times to distribute oil.
• Replacewith newspark plug.
OTHER
• Do not store gasoline from one season to another.
• Replace your gasoline can if your can starts to rust.
Rust and/or dirt in your gasoline will cause problems.
• If possible, store your unit indoors and cover it to give
protection from dust and dirt.
• Cover your unit with a suitable protective cover that
does not retain moisture. Do not use plastic. Plastic
cannotbreathewhichallowscondensationtoformand
will cause your unit to rust.
IMPORTANT: NEVER COVER MOWER WHILE ENGINE
AND EXHAUST AREAS ARE STILL WARM.
