SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

• Alwaysuseextracautionwhentowingwithamachinecapableofmaking
tightturns(e.g.“zero-turn”ride-onmower).Makewideturnstoavoid
jack-knifing.
• Travelslowlyandallowextradistancetostop.
• Donotcoastdownhill.
SERVICE
Safe Handling of Gasoline:
To avoid personal injury or property damage use extreme care in handling
gasoline. Gasoline is extremely flammable and the vapors are explosive.
Serious personal injury can occur when gasoline is spilled on yourself or your
clothes which can ignite. Wash your skin and change clothes immediately.
• Useonlyanapprovedgasolinecontainer.
• Neverfillcontainersinsideavehicleoronatruckortrailerbedwithaplastic
liner.Alwaysplacecontainersonthegroundawayfromyourvehiclebefore
filling.
• Whenpractical,removegas-poweredequipmentfromthetruckor
trailerandrefuelitontheground.Ifthisisnotpossible,thenrefuelsuch
equipmentonatrailerwithaportablecontainer,ratherthanfromagasoline
dispensernozzle.
• Keepthenozzleincontactwiththerimofthefueltankorcontaineropening
atalltimesuntilfuelingiscomplete.Donotuseanozzlelock-opendevice.
• Extinguishallcigarettes,cigars,pipesandothersourcesofignition.
• Neverfuelmachineindoors.
• Neverremovegascaporaddfuelwhiletheengineishotorrunning.Allow
enginetocoolatleasttwominutesbeforerefueling.
• Neveroverfillfueltank.Filltanktonomorethan½inchbelowbottomof
fillernecktoallowspaceforfuelexpansion.
• Replacegasolinecapandtightensecurely.
• Ifgasolineisspilled,wipeitofftheengineandequipment.Movemachineto
anotherarea.Wait5minutesbeforestartingtheengine.
• Toreducefirehazards,keepmachinefreeofgrass,leaves,orotherdebris
build-up.Cleanupoilorfuelspillageandremoveanyfuelsoakeddebris.
• Neverstorethemachineorfuelcontainerinsidewherethereisanopen
flame,sparkorpilotlightasonawaterheater,spaceheater,furnace,clothes
dryerorothergasappliances.
• Allowamachinetocoolatleastfiveminutesbeforestoring.
General Service
• Neverrunanengineindoorsorinapoorlyventilatedarea.Engineexhaust
containscarbonmonoxide,anodorless,anddeadlygas.
• Beforecleaning,repairing,orinspecting,makecertaintheblade(s)andall
movingpartshavestopped.Disconnectthesparkplugwireandgroundagainst
theenginetopreventunintendedstarting.
• Periodicallychecktomakesurethebladescometocompletestopwithin
approximately(5)fivesecondsafteroperatingthebladedisengagement
control.Ifthebladesdonotstopwithinthethistimeframe,yourmachine
shouldbeservicedprofessionallybyaSearsorotherqualifiedservicedealer.
• Checkbrakeoperationfrequentlyasitissubjectedtowearduringnormal
operation.Adjustandserviceasrequired.
• Checktheblade(s)andenginemountingboltsatfrequentintervalsfor
propertightness.Also,visuallyinspectblade(s)fordamage(e.g.,excessive
wear,bent,cracked).Replacetheblade(s)withtheoriginalequipment
manufacturer’s(O.E.M.)blade(s)only,listedinthismanual.Useofparts
whichdonotmeettheoriginalequipmentspecificationsmayleadto
improperperformanceandcompromisesafety!
• Mowerbladesaresharp.Wrapthebladeorweargloves,anduseextra
cautionwhenservicingthem.
• Keepallnuts,bolts,andscrewstighttobesuretheequipmentisinsafe
workingcondition.
• Nevertamperwiththesafetyinterlocksystemorothersafetydevices.Check
theirproperoperationregularly.
• Afterstrikingaforeignobject,stoptheengine,disconnectthesparkplug
wire(s)andgroundagainsttheengine.Thoroughlyinspectthemachinefor
anydamage.Repairthedamagebeforestartingandoperating.
• Neverattempttomakeadjustmentsorrepairstothemachinewhilethe
engineisrunning.
• Grasscatchercomponentsandthedischargecoveraresubjecttowear
anddamagewhichcouldexposemovingpartsorallowobjectstobe
thrown.Forsafetyprotection,frequentlycheckcomponentsandreplace
immediatelywithoriginalequipmentmanufacturer’s(O.E.M.)partsonly,
listedinthismanual.Useofpartswhichdonotmeettheoriginalequipment
specificationsmayleadtoimproperperformanceandcompromisesafety!
• Donotchangetheenginegovernorsettingsorover-speedtheengine.The
governorcontrolsthemaximumsafeoperatingspeedoftheengine.
• Maintainorreplacesafetyandinstructionlabels,asnecessary.
• Observeproperdisposallawsandregulationsforgas,oil,etc.toprotectthe
environment.
• AccordingtotheConsumerProductsSafetyCommission(CPSC)andtheU.S.
EnvironmentalProtectionAgency(EPA),thisproducthasanAverageUseful
Lifeofseven(7)years,or270hoursofoperation.AttheendoftheAverage
UsefulLife,buyanewmachineorhavethemachineinspectedannuallyby
aSearsorotherqualifiedservicedealertoensurethatallmechanicaland
safetysystemsareworkingproperlyandnotwornexcessively.Failuretodo
socanresultinaccidents,injuriesordeath.
DO NOT MODIFY ENGINE
To avoid serious injury or death, do not modify engine in any way. Tampering
with the governor setting can lead to a runaway engine and cause it to
operate at unsafe speeds. Never tamper with factory setting of engine
governor.
