containing small metal

FOODS
•Onlycookpopcorninyour
microwaveovenusingaspecial
microwavepopcornaccessory
dish,unless youusepopcorn
labeledforuseinmicrowave
ovens.
•Someproductssuchaswhole
eggs(withshell),sealed
containers,andclosedjarswill
explode and shouldnot be
heatedinthismicrowaveoven.
Heatingtheseproductsinthe
microwaveovencouldresultin
injury.
•Donot boil eggsina
microwaveoven.Pressurewill
buildup insideegg yolkandwill
causeit toburst, possibly
resultingininjury.
•Operating the microwave
withnofood insideformore
than aminuteortwomay
causedamagetothe oven

boiling point.
Theycanactuallyget
superheatedand not
bubbleatall.
Superheatedliquidcan
bubbleup whenitismoved
or when somethinglikea
spoonor teabag isputinto
it.
Topreventthisfrom
happeningand causing
injury,donotheatany
liquidformore than2
minutespercup.After
heating,letthecup stand in
the microwavefor 30
secondsbefore moving itor
putting anythingintoit.
•Avoidheatingbabyfoodin
glass
jars, even withthelidoff.Make
sureallinfant foodisthoroughly
cooked. Stirfoodtodistributethe
heat evenly.Becarefultoprevent
scalding whenwarmingformula.
The containermayfeelcooler
than the milkreallyis.
Alwaystestthemilkbefore
feedingthebaby.
•Spontaneousboiling-Under
certaincircumstances,liquids
maystarttoboil duringorshortly
afterremovalfromthemicrowave
oven.Topreventburnsfrom
splashing liquid, werecommend
thefollowing: beforeremoving
the
containerfromthe
oven,allowthe
containertostandintheoven for
30to40 secondsaftertheoven
hasshutoff. Donot boil liquidsin
narrow-neckedcontainerssuch
assoftdrinkbottles,wineflasks
andespeciallynarrow-necked
coffee cups.Even ifthecontainer
is opened,excessive steamcan
buildup and causeittoburstor
overflow.
•Don tdefrost frozen
beveragesinnarrow-necked
bottles(especiallycarbonated
beverages). Even ifthe
containeris opened,pressure
can buildup.Thiscancause
thecontainertoburst, possibly
resultingininjury.
•Hotfoodsandsteamcan
causeburns.Becarefulwhen
openinganycontainersofhot
food,includingpopcornbags,
cooking
pouchesandboxes.To
prevent possibleinjury,direct
steamawayfromhandsand
face.
•Donot overcookpotatoes.
Theycoulddehydrateand
catchfire, causingdamage to
youroven.
•Cookmeatandpoultry
thoroughly-meattoatleast an
INTERNALtemperatureof160
F(71.1C).andpoultry
toatleast
anINTERNALtemperatureof
180F(82.2C).Cookingto
thesetemperaturesusually
protectsagainstfoodborne
illness.

glasscasseroles,cooking
dishes, measuringcups,

Somecookwareislabeled
“suitableformicrowaving.”
•Ifyouuseameat
thermometerwhilecooking,
makesureit issafeforusein
microwaveovens.
•Donot userecycled paper
products.Recycledpaper
towels,napkinsand waxed
papercancontainmetalflecks
whichmaycausearcingor
ignite.Paperproducts
containing nylonornylon
filamentshouldbeavoided, as
theymayalsoignite.
•Notallplasticwrapissuitable
foruseinmicrowaveovens.
Checkthe packageforproper
use.
•Somestyrofoamtrays(like
thosethat meat ispackaged
on)haveathinstripofmetal
embeddedinthebottom.
When microwaved,themetal
can burnthefloorofthe oven
origniteapapertowel.
•Cookwaremaybecomehot
becauseofheat transferred
fromthe heated food.Pot
holdersmaybeneeded to
handlethecookware.
•“Boilable”cooking pouches
andtightlyclosedplastic
bags
shouldbeslit, pierced or
ventedasdirectedby
package.Iftheyarenot,
plasticcouldburst duringor
immediatelyaftercooking,
possiblyresulting ininjury.
Also,plasticstorage
containersshouldbe at least
partiallyuncoveredbecause
theyformatight seal.When
cookingwithcontainers
tightlycoveredwithplastic
wrap,remove covering
carefullyanddirect steam
awayfromhandsand face.
•Papertowels,waxedpaper
andplasticwrapcanbe used
to
coverdishesinordertoretain
moistureandprevent
spattering.Besuretovent
plasticwrapsosteamcan
escape.
